I bought the M9 after a year with the M8, im really happy with my decision and definately wouldn't go back on it.
Battery Life is the same for me
Screen is also pretty much the same, no better and no worse
Speed is Fast! but then again the M8 is also fast!
Camera is better, but saying "it couldn't be worse" is opening the floodgates for everyone who bashes the M9 in these parts. Check out the M9 photos thread there are some fantastic images in there, especially from Hamdir!
Bear in mind my reason for upgrading was because i always want the latest, greatest thing. That said the upgrade was totally worth it either way for me - Adam

The M9 is not a massive gulf in difference over the M8 at first glance.
However the feel and yes looks are different, not massively again but enough that you sense a nice injection of refinement.
The Screen well there are differences and its subjective as to what one is for the better, I like both and let's just say you won't be dissapointed, the M9 is crisp and clear.
The Audio is fantastic both through the boomsound speakers and headphones especially with my recent purchase of the Rha's T10 wow its nice.
Battery has been on the better side of average.
So your call but the M9 is nice, it all depends on you and how you perceive the upgrade.
I also like the Camera & base storage of 32gb & expandable.

I upgraded after a year with my M8. I like the feel of the M9 better. It has similar battery performance, but the OS menus are way smoother. I like the camera - the M8 was really only best in low light.
Personally for me, the M8 is smoother and quicker (whilst cooler).
The camera on the M9 is slightly better but not worth using in low light, especially pubs/home/parties, the M8 whilst capturing pics in low light has a useable focus time and a much brighter flash.
The battery life on the M8 gave me an hour to two better screen on time.
The M9 screen looks nicer to me.
On a side note, the gold looks more like copper, and it most definitely is not scratch resistant.
Personally if you have an M8, I don't think you'll be too impressed.

Those of you who have switched from a Nexus 5 to the GPE M8, have you noticed any issues with the sound? I had the GPE M8 and returned it since some notifications would distort sometimes and you could hear distortion when turning up the volume. I returned it to see if this could get ironed out and went back to the Nexus 5, but miss the build quality and battery life of the M8.
What about camera quality? Do you notice a big difference between the two. One of the reasons I went back was for the camera, but now I can't decide if that was worth it or not.
Seriously? All the notifications are very low quality files. Horrible way to judge the sound output of the device. If that's your criteria than the M8 isn't for you since that's a problem that you will face with all the M8s. As for the camera I don't miss it at all honestly. M8s camera has been great so far for me.

I was just wondering if that was an issue with the phone or the notifications itself. I had never experienced that before. It wasn't constantly, so I thought it might have been an issue. But thank you for chiming in on that.
And the GPE M8 camera isn't as good as the Sense M8, from what I have heard as it's basically just a stock 4mp camera. So I was wondering other people's experiences with switching from the 8mp camera of the N5 (which I have found to be pretty solid) to the 4mp camera of the GPE M8.
I've used the GPE conversion and noticed no noticeable difference and photo quality. Plus all the features you get with the stock M8 camera are still available to you.

TBH I do notice a difference in camera quality... it doesn't seem as "sharp". Appears more soft than when using Sense camera.

That's kind of what I thought. The quality of pics coming from the Nexus 5 seem to be quite a bit better than the GPE M8. That's the only thing holding me back.

In terms of detail the nexus 5 is probably better on both sense and GPE M8, but at least you get more camera features and tweaks. By no means is it a bad camera, just don't zoom in and it looks amazing, better than my girlfriends note 2. Only when zooming in it becomes clear. And low light performance is only second to high end nokia lumias.

Are you referring to the quality of pics on the GPE M8 or stock M8 when comparing it to the Note 2?
Another thing I noticed was shutter speed. The Nexus is definitely much faster there. Which is important when taking pictures of speedy toddlers.

Yeah the GPE M8 I had was much slower than the Nexus 5. I even tried them side by side and it was obvious which one was faster. Unless you had the flash or HDR on.

I'd assume that's probably from the bad file quality of the notifications like the first responder said.
I guess it's more an issue with the files themselves and not a problem with the phone.

Battery life on the Nexus is just OK. It gets through most days as long as you aren't hard core about using it. But it isn't the best.
The M8 was great. I didn't have a single issue with it. Made it through every day with ease. And that was with a lot of accounts syncing and a decent amount of use.

This was due to the old "stock" camera app available on the GPE at launch. It has since been updated with the release of the Google camera update in the play store. It has zero lag to speak of now.

Well I did try them side by side with the new camera and the Nexus 5 was still faster. Pics are definitely better on the Nexus 5, but they aren't terrible on the M8. They just seem to lack detail and color depth. Even on non zoomed in pics.

Everyone knows camera is weakest link on M8. If you bought M8, you know its limitations. It has been well documented that your daylight pics wont look as good as most other flagship devices which includes Nexus 5. Nexus 5 after the camera updates take brilliant HDR images which are comparable to even Samsung or LG flagships. Better at times.
The images on M8 are flatter. Those who want to defend the M8 Ultra Pixel camera say that it does not matter if you are watching pictures on phone or monitor, but it is clearly visible on most high resolution good quality monitors. Specially if you compare it side by side to images taken by say S4, s5 or even Nexus 5. Even when they are not zoomed in, you can see more detail and sharpness. So nothing out of ordinary here.
As far as Android experience is concerned, GPE is not any faster than Nexus 5 in terms of how it feels while navigating Android UI. The 2 things where M8 kills Nexus 5 is the feel of the phone in hands and battery life. Even on GPE battery life is phenomenal.
If you moved to M8 GPE hoping you will feel the increased performance while using phone, you will be disappointed. There is virtually no difference in performance. You are paying for the hardware quality and materials used. Not for performance.

Opinions are like saying blue looks better than red. When you can actually clearly see and know there is no way in hell a 4MP camera will capture more details than a good 8 or 13MP camera in daylight, it is not a opinion. It is a fact. M8 camera is good at certain things, but definitely not best thing to have to take images with good details. Especially in scenes where there are lot of details outdoors.
I bought M8 knowing what to expect. I had original One. With couple of tricks added thanks to Duo camera, the level of details were simply not going to improve dramatically. Resolution shows its limitations in cases like these.
It is not a ****ty camera by any means, but what OP described is very well documented and known. People expect a $650 phone to blow $350 phone out of water in everything. That is simply not going to happen with phones like M8. It is designed knowing they are compromising something to get gains in other areas. They stuck to it. Whether people like it or not is different matter.
Hello everyone
I am planning to buy htc desire 816. I loved its specs and looks.
But i have checked some reviews that were complainng about camera and lock button.
So,please can someone suggest me is it good handset to buy or is there any better phn in same range.
Guys guys suggest me.
Its pretty great for pay as you go. The only thing I hate is the battery. Mine is horrible for whatever reason and always has been. This device would be a no contest with more Dev support and a better battery.

How much battery backup is there right now...Moreover,I have read reviews regarding sluggish camera.
Is it true?????
What do you mean by battery backup? And I wouldn't call the camera sluggish. It doesent do to well in low light like other HTC phones do and often doesent feel like it's really 13mp and is upsetting but on other occasions its great. Used it to take pictures of my newborn in the hospital and the pictures are awesome and very clear. There's def way worse cameras on phones in this range.
I am very happy with the desire 816. It's fast - much faster than I thought it would be for the price. I came from a Moto X which is a great phone that had much worse battery life and a camera that failed (the phone was quickly replaced by Motorola). If you want/need to do a lot of changes to the lock screen (something I don't care about), you might want to read the comments in this forum about what can be done with Xposed, xtended settings and Sense 6 toolbox. I'm not a gamer, so this big, "midrange" phone is perfect for me, especially after unlocking, rooting, and Xposing.
Hi All
I used to own an M9, youve probably seen me post on here before, however, I sold the M9 on as I was so dissappointed by the camera(I know its not an SLR, but the M9 camera wasnt even decent in low light and while I have my trusty Canon, as a candid photographer, Ii do like to have a "snapper" with me to catch those moments), but i do love the speakers and Im a huge fan of sense UI.
My local store have both the M8 for £350 and the M9 for £500, BNIB and both unbranded and I do know the M8 is getting sense 7 plus alot oif the M9 features
So as they are pretty much the same phone, Has the M9 phone and camera improved to warrant the £150 extra.. or should i Just grab the M8 and wait for the M10 next year.
Thanks
In my opinion (And the specs of course), the M9 is better than the M8 in every way.
The biggest issue people have is that the M9 didn't really bring any new features but there is doubt the M9 is the better phone which is a great achievement as the M8 really was the best phone released last year.

Thanks
I don't really use it to be honest, but in the thread at the top of this section there have been a great number of updates all around the device and that definitely includes camera updates.
I like the camera I use the fv-5 camera. I'M not a big picture taker. I had to Play with it to form my own opinion

The M9 is an amazing phone... But the M8 is also an amazing phone. I think if you are going "on contract" or an installment plan, you might as well get the M9. If you are buying outside of a contract with the idea of upgrading in a year, I'd go with the M8 (if it's a lot cheaper).
As mentioned above, the M9 is a great phone and worth it if going the new to the "ONE" series of phones. The camera is better in almost every way, except in darker settings. I play in a band and spend a lot of time in dimly lit places (aka: night clubs). I like to take pictures of the crowd, my band and my gear while at a show...The M8 takes better pictures in this setting. I also spend a lot of time with the family camping and doing outdoors stuff and the M9 does an AMAZING job with outdoor/daytime shots, but as I mentioned already it does pretty bad with darker shots, whereas the M8 does much better. The M8 also does a decent job at day shots, but you can't really zoom in any while taking the picture or afterwards (crop in too much) without it being really grainy.
Everything else is pretty identical and I'd be hard-pressed to tell a difference in speed between the two while running programs and playing games. The M9 has a 64bit processor, but not sure that means a whole lot right now?
So basically.......You can't go wrong either way, just depends on how much you want to spend? Do you want a great phone (M8) or a greater phone (M9)?
Honestly.... As much as I like my M9, I wish I could go back and keep my M8 until the M10 came out.
One last thing to mention: If you're into custom ROMs, the M8 has MANY more custom ROMs available.....Sense, GPe, AOSP, CM, ect... But the one's available for the M9 seem much more stable.
Hi guys, I'm using HTC M8 and I'm thinking about upgrading to M9 (I have a good deal). I've heard that M9 had a lot of issues when it was released, so I'm looking for someone who's been using it from the day it was released to ask a few questions:
- Did updates fix anything?
- Is camera better now?
- Is rear camera better than M8's camera, if you ignore the resolution?
- Is camera at night better, or is it completely useless?
- Does it overheat like before?
- Is battery life better than before?
Thank you a lot. Sorry for my english.
The updates fixed nothing.
Camera is no better or worse.
M8 camera is more fluid on the screen, better framerate?, no noticable differences as the rear camera is 4k yet the screen is 1080p, you'd need a 4k device for playback to get the full experience.
The flash has an orange led component so the light is more in the red spectrum which makes it duller than the dual whites on the m8.
Yes it overheats but it has never shutdown or had any detriment at the 51c I personally recorded.
Battery life is really no better nor worse than the m8 as it totally depends how you use the phone.
Summary.. If you can get the m8 at an amazing price it'd probably be best opting for that rather than forking out for the m9 which is overall a monsterous device but there is no software requirement for such powerful devices.
That being said if you really really have your heart set on the m9 and have the opportunity at a good deal it surely won't disappoint but make sure you have a decent case for it from day one as my screen is already scratched and I don't know how it happened.
I wish I stole my HTC M9. It's a pile of ****.
At this point six months on, you should wait for the M10 or whatever is coming next. Most people with M8s feel the M9 is an incremental update. I came from the M7 and love it, but many people with M8s were disappointed.

For me the m7 to m9 is a worthy upgrade but I don't know if I could say the same about the m8 to the m9.
The m9 is a great phone with a good camera (once tweaked) just need a a bit of nurturing.
For me it's the best phone out at the moment and I've had most of them.
I came from the M8 and it does feel like an incremental upgrade... But this is what I was expecting because the M8 was already a superior device.
The firmware updates addressed the heating, battery life, fast charging and camera.
Honestly though with the Aero set to release shortly or even the Nexus 5, I say wait and see what they have to offer.
The M9 is a beast of a device no doubt but with a deca-core processor on the horizon, I would wait!

The camera isn't that bad to be honest, it just doesn't reach the level of some other flagships such as the Galaxy S6 and the G4 (especially in low-light conditions). For the battery life, most of the m9 owners have noticed an improvement after the 6.0 update. I'm currently running a custom rom (ViperOne 4.2.1) and you can see my battery stats in the attached screen cap.
You can also check this thread for more details: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/battery-sot-t3067585/page140
The heat issues still exist. Regardless of what people say, they just don't use, or should i say "abuse", the device enough.
That said, my phone has never overheated and switched off.
The camera leaves a bit to be desired. Choppy framerate and noise are the norm in picture mode but video is smooth and clear.
Boomsound is what sells this phone. It hasn't been beaten to this day for quality.

The only thing that bothers me about the camera is the lack of OIS.
Easiest way to put it if you want sense get a M8 if you don't get a 6P..

Would you recommend the M8 over the M9 even when they are att the same price level? I have a M8 myself today but I'm thinking about upgrading a family member from One S to a M9. At least here in my area they are about the same price (M8 16 GB vs M9 32 GB).

M8 is an amazing device, but M9 sucks period it's my biggest regret in life won't buy a HTC device after this if you want an expensive heater and device with no support for months then go for it 401 variant didn't get an update since July last year... we just got the MM update and it still had it's issues, I've had lots of build quality issues, saw other people with the same issues and even people on xda who're on their 3rd+ M9 camera software sucks the sensor is great but you just can't get a good picture from it, I replaced my M9 with an Nexus 6 and never looked back now just got a nexus 6P and it blew me away how great is it if that device is an option for you go for that you won't be disappointed To me the M9 feels like a mid-range with flagship pricing
Another +1 for the 6P honestly don't bother with the M9, I'm an HTC guy through and through, look at my signature for device history. The M8 was my favourite device to date, fantastic battery life, blazing performance, decent cameras (especially in low light). The M7 was also pretty amazing but the M9 in my opinion is a downgrade from the M8, camera in any low light situations is absolutely awful, battery life is poor, got far less SOT with the M9 than I did with the M8. I really hope the M10 is decent because HTC can't afford another release like the M9. The software support has gone down hill with the M9 too, they updated the M8 quite consistently but the M9 took forever to get marshmallow! I had the nexus 4 a few years ago and went straight back to HTC because I missed sense, I missed the features, (stock android wasn't as polished back then). Absolutely love my 6P, first non HTC phone I've owned in years and it's slowly becoming my favourite all time device, camera is fantastic, low light performance is incredible! Battery life is also very impressive, the device is obviously a lot bigger so consider if a phablet is going to be a comfortable size for you but if size isn't an issue I'd chose the 6P anyday of the week. Had the M9 from launch up until November so in that time I put it through its paces! Although a small feature, the finger print sensor is a fantastic little piece of hardware, it's so much faster than unlocking with a code or pattern. The thing is, the M9 isn't a bad phone, but considering the fact its a HTC & was released in 2015 I was expecting so much more!
Thanks I own now two devices and i will pick M9 anytime. 6p microphone sound so so weak comparing to M9 and stereo speakers more clear on M9 HANDS DOWN!
