Full Factory Reset / Image Restore - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, I recently bought a Tab S 8.4 and want to install a custom ROM. I also own a Nexus 5 and frequently try out new roms, so I'm comfortable with flashing on the N5.
I have successfully rooted the Tab S and I have downloaded CM12 and GApps zips.
I have installed the twrp app but have not yet actually replaced the stock recovery.
Before I do this, I need to know if I will be able to (easily) install the factory firmware and image if I decide I want to go back.
On the N5 its a very simple and fast process.
Anyone else done this?

Yep

I guess I should clarify what I am looking for.
Is the process the same on the Tab S as on the N5 when you use twrp?
Is there anything different that I should be aware of before I begin?

Seeing as you are rooted my advice is to make a backup of the stock recovery with flashify then either flash TWRP recovery with it or flash it via Odin.

[Q] Noob here. Is installing Cyanogenmod 10 on my SGH-i747M with Rogers safe?

Hello.
I have a GS3 SGH-I747M on rogers. The last one I was trying to get Cyanogenmod 10 on kept getting (Status 7) error. Nothing screwed up at all, until I attempted to unlock the boot loader with some stupid app that said it was safe wit my phone. I finally got a new one, found a solution to my issue (I have to use a different version of clockworkmod) and was wondering if it is safe to do. I mean no chance of risk if I follow instructions (no bricks, etc).
TL;DR: I have an SGH-i747M on rogers and want to out cyanogenmod 10 on with no chance of brick. Could you give me instructions on how to, or tell me if it is safe/unsafe?
Thanks a lot,
Edwin
Flash a newer recovery prior to flashing CM10.

I suggest that you take a look at these first before trying to root your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725839
Second, I have Cyanogenmod 10 and I can say that it's playing safe so far - the only disadvantages that you would have are: Samsung's gestures are not functional and CM10 is kinda unstable for games and apps. I also experienced the Status 7 error and from experience, it's caused by using an 'old' version of CWM Recovery. Download the latest one from here (Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T): http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager and download the Cyanogenmod 10 M2 from the CM site.
Assuming that you know how to setup the custom recovery for your phone, delete the current recovery.img on your phone and replace it with the new one that you downloaded. Then just do what you did to setup your custom recovery. I also suggest that you follow the ROM flashing guide on this page: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III:_Full_Update_Guide as it is what I followed to ensure that a brick wouldn't happen on my phone. Just a reminder, also wipe the Dalvik cache just to be sure.
TL;DR Flashing and rooting is safe as long as you're patient and you thoroughly follow guides on rooting/flashing your phone.

Thanks for the response, do you recommend that I flash another ROM before flashing cyanogenmod 10?

I don't really recommend that as that could cause unwanted trouble. From my experience, I just followed the rooting guide that I posted, flash a custom recovery, and flashed the Cyanogenmod 10. Another tip, if you don't want to lose your contacts, make a backup of it before flashing a ROM. Preferrably you write them in a paper so it would be easier. If you have important messages, use an SMS/MMS backup tool to save them. As for applications, make a list of applications that you consider are essential for you so you could just redownload them. Starting out in a custom ROM is really hard at first but you'll get used to it.
Its safety is directly proportional to your ability to follow directions.
Your first mistake was you used the app to unlock the VERIZON S3 bootloader.
All other versions of the GS 3 have unlocked bootloaders.
You should definitely do some more research before you attempt root and custom recovery.

Can you just use ROM Manager after rooting and flashing the stock ROM to download CWM, then CM10? And is the CM10 you're using on your Rogers phone compatible? I don't see a Rogers version on the CM site. Did you use the AT&T one?
Yes for the ROM manager, but the free version doesn't install latest touch recovery. The at&t version is compatible with all Canadian i747m. You can get the latest version here: http://get.cm/?device=d2att

What does touch recovery do? And do I have to use that link to flash it, or can I use ROM Manager? And if I were to use that link, I would DL the zip, boot my phone into download mode, plug in, open Odin, make sure auto reboot and F reset time are checked, load the .tar into the PDA, and click start? What happens to the previous ROM that was there?
And when I first root my phone, and load the stock rom, do all of my apps remain? I haven't rooted yet, for my Rogers phone.
A touch recovery lets you touch the screen as apposed to using the volume rocker.
You will keep all your data.

Thanks for the help! Another question, if I would like to unroot my phone, and decrease the flash counter, is there a thread I should see for the I747MVLLH1? I know about triangle away, but Rogers/my model isn't supported for that.
Triangle away does support Rogers gs3
Thanks! So should I flash CM10 through ROM Manager, or through the link that was posted? I'm not exactly clear on how to flash the ROM through the link though. Does flashing a new ROM erase the previous ROM? And 'wiping cache' doesn't wipe your data/apps right, only 'wipe Data and Cache'? And I don't really need to bother with kernels too right?
If you going from stock to cm10 wipe everything: cash, data, dalvik cash. Don't flash kernels unless you want to overclock and undervolt, cm10 comes with kernel and I get pretty good battery life with it. You can flash from ROM manager, and yes it will erase your previous ROM, so do a backup before flashing.

And when I flash it through ROM Manager, it would give me the option to wipe everything right?
The backup that I would do through ROM Manager, thats just incase anything goes wrong right? It's not to get back my apps once I flash from stock to CM10? Other than manually installing them after flash, is there any way to quickly get back my apps/files?
And does the CM10 flash from ROM Manager include the GAPPS file?
Yes it will ask you if you want to wipe, if you download cm10 ROM from ROM manager it will ask you if you want the latest gapps. You can get ROM toolbox or titanium backup to backup your apps and restore them after flashing rom. Backup is just in case but you can always flash stock ROM later if anything goes wrong.

You should probably flash through your cwm recovery instead of ROM Manager, but yea you can do a backup in recovery or ROM Manager, and I recommend Titanium backup it's easy to use and free.

How exactly would I flash through cwm recovery?

Create Nandroid first!?

So i just got a Galaxy S3 from sprint. What im wondering is if i can first flash a custom recovery BEFORE doing anything else like rooting or flashing custom rom, etc etc. I want to do this so i have the exact stock image of the phone as it came in case anything goes wrong. Is this possible?

Download a stock rooted ROM (tar), ODIN that. Now you're rooted. Flash a custom recovery (TWRP recommended). Do your Nandroid, and carry on.

[Q] How do I update my rooted Nexus 7?

Hey guys I just got the Nexus 7 2013(Wifi) today for Christmas and I just rooted it with Nexus Root Toolkit, and I wanted to know how I can update to Android 5.0 without wiping it. I have Android 4.4.4 with the latest TWRP.
You didn't install a custom ROM? I have the same tablet, I also rooted mine. I updated to Jellybean and everything seems to be working, except I lost root and it's really annoying that I haven't found how to root it again without it being wiped erasing all my apps and data.
You can update it via OTA, but you will lose root.

You can either:
(1) Wait for the OTA: hence no wipe of data
(2) Use the factory image and remove the wipe command (-w) (search for a how to, answered many times here)
(3) Use the OTA zip (not familiar with process, if it wipes or not, as I always use factory images but I guess there is a how-to in here as well somewhere!)
(4) ...
One thing you should take into account though is that for a major android version jump (e.g. 4.4.4 => 5) you should always consider to wipe.
In addition, questions go into Q&A section
You can install multirom. So you can keep the stock rom and install lollipop as well. Just have a look at the multirom thread on how to install it. It's quite easy.
There is zero reason not to do a clean install in your situation.
Flash the factory image, reflash twrp, flash su zip, done.

[Q] Bought used rooted LG G3, how to tell if it has custom recovery?

Hello all,
I recently bought a LG G3 used as a Christmas present to myself. I've just set it up and noticed that SU installed fine from my playstore account, and after verifying I see that it's already rooted. Is there some way to tell if it's also been set up with a custom recovery as well? I have pending system updates and would like to go ahead and install, but not if it's going to soft brick the phone.
Or is there no way to safely install system updates with just root, and I need to completely wipe to stock anyway?

Download an app from Play store that let's you reboot in recovery mode like Quick Boot (Reboot) and check for yourself.
As for the updates you must be completely stock and unrooted if you want to install OTA Official system updates.

Download 4 way reboot app from the playstore and then use it to reboot into recovery. If it goes into TWRP you've got twrp
You might also install "root checker". Then you'll know for sure if its rooted or not.

Thanks everyone for the quick knowledge. Downloaded root checker which confirmed I'm rooted, and downloaded 4 way boot which shows I have stock recovery.
Since I need to be completely stock to install OTA's, what's the recommended way to go back to stock? I would prefer not to have to do a complete wipe, but it’s not the end of the world if it’s needed.

Download your desired firmware and flash with LG Flash Tools 2014.
Follow the guide in this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089
It has options for normal flash without losing data and a CSE Flash for a fresh format. Although I strongly recommend doing the full wipe CSE Flash Option and a factory reset from stock recovery after flash so you won't have any problems - best experience. Good Luck.

TWRP vs stock recovery?

Other than the nice graphical interface, is there any reason to install TWRP if all one needs to do is flash a ROM? The stock recovery allows you to wipe the cache and do a factory reset as well as flash ROMs. I have used both on other devices. I recently bought a Tab S 8.4 and plan to install LineageOS 14.1. Seems like the stock recovery will do what I need without having to use Odin.
Update: I've done a little more reading and it appears that I probably cannot flash a custom ROM from the stock recovery. I had assumed that was possible due to the menu item of "install zip from SD card" item. I this is correct, then clearly I'll need TWRP to flash a custom ROM. If anyone can verify this, then the thread can be closed.
I like TWRP because now and then I can do a full backup of my install. If you tend to mod your ROM with root in any way, this can be handy because you can always revert to the old setup.
