Running SGH-I927RUXKJ5_STOCK_ROOTED. Phone reboots when plugging in a Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter. Upon reboot phone operates normally but no display on the external monitor. Anybody have MHL adapter working on Captivate Glide? Thanks for any help.
I ordered mine on ebay.
Phone doesn't reboot when connecting MHL cable.
But no video output to HDMI ...
I'm running Rogers ROM + Cranium kernel.
Edit :
it works !
You just need to connect the adapter to the power supply.
Just tested it with a HDMI videoprojector.
Powerpoint presentation displayed full screen.
Video file as well.
No lag at all.
Didn't check if audio was routed through HDMI (the videoprojector I used doesn't support it).

I can confirm that audio works. Anything you can see or hear on the phone goes to the TV.
I get video but no audio but that might be because of my audio setup.
I have tried it as well with a MHL adapter I bought at Monoprice and you do get audio. I have noticed sometimes it does not work though when I plug it in. I do not know why. I am wondering if the MHL adapter I bought is flaky or if Our phone is sometimes picky.
i checked the connection, video and sound work great.
No connection loss.
Connection works everytime I connect the cable.

Have you any issues with the length of your HDMI cable I found 3 feet works but 10 feet does not did not try a 6 foot as did not have 1 at the time. I think it can not be to long as it needs power from the micro USB and too long may not have enough power. Just curious on the length of your HDMI?

The cable I used was 6 feet long.
It worked great. It had no impact on video quality or sound quality.

Are you asking where to download SGH-I927UCLG9, or are you asking whether SGH-I927UCLG9 is compatible with hdmi, or what are you asking?
What makes it work?
Is the MHL functionality connected to the ROM you use, or the device? or both? I have a kitkat rom and was hoping that would make it work, but it doesn't, and didn't with the official Ice Cream Sandwich version either.
I don't have an MHL adapter, but I'd try cleaning the USB connector on the phone. The reason I say this is that my i927 would sometimes have trouble connecting to the PC by USB and often, when receiving a phone call, it'd switch to car mode, as if I had a car accessory connected.
I cleaned the connector on my phone by rubbing the contacts first with an x-acto blade, then with a piece of paper with WD40 backed by the blade and finally with another piece of paper with ethyl alcohol. Don't forget to remove the battery before trying this and be very gentle to avoid breaking the connector.
so, anyone taken apart an MHL adapter yet?
i have a sneaking suspicion, that the move to an 11 pin is what will allow BOTH OTG, and MHL at the same time, but i could be wrong.
look inside your USB port on the bottom of the S3...
whatya see?
the normal 5 pins on the USB part.. but what is that in back wall? THE OTHER 6 PINS!
yep, that is why you cannot plug the MHL adapter into a hub or anything.. there is 6 pins are missing.
Now, i am wondering:
has anyone taken it apart to see if the 6 pins are used alone, or if it uses the the USB also?
if it uses only the 6 pins for MHL-ness, then it should more than possible to make an OTG/MHL adapter/dock.
more thought says, if my theory is right, an 11 pin to 5 pin conveter may be the key.. and an otg can be spliced in to give 2 outputs: MHL in one (using an s2 MHL adapter) and OTG in the other.....
anyone wanna tear their adapter up? or are you guys gonna make me spend some money?
I ran across this post looking to see if anyone has done this yet. I am going to try to grab the 5 to 11 tomorrow and tear it apart (since it's the cheaper adapter). My plan was to rip it apart and if the original 5 pins are available, splice just as you mentioned.
I can't find a decent picture of the microUSB plug to see if all pins are there.
Also I found this:
http://homixtech.en.alibaba.com/pro...Galaxy_S3_11pin_To_Micro_USB_5pin_Gender.html
Which makes me think 11 pin microUSB plugs that work are available out there somewhere.

So, did you do this experiment? Has anybody found a way to get access to all of the pins and make OTG work with MHL?
I've been waiting for two months for an answer about this. I'm glad someone started a thread. I kind of have this hesitation to start new threads.
I would love it if this could be integrated with the seidio active dock.

meh, I think that is wrong. many people have done exactly what it says you can do, and it doesn't work.
Makes me wonder if the boys at Samsung made a press mistake. If indeed you can't use both with the correct cable, then why make a port with 11 pins? Seems a waste of resources to me.

I have never seen anything from samsung saying that MHL and OTG was possible.. just speculation in websites.
It better be possible because if not all Samsung's managed to do is make us buy hugely overpriced new MHL cables when they could have kept the old type, but I guess Samsung's made some decent money giving people no option but to buy £30 MHL cables.
I hope Monoprice really is working on a cable. 35-40 USD is more than I want to pay, especially if I get a couple and/or an HDMI dock.

Someone needs to find the resistor values first so the phone can use both simultaneously if it's even possible that is.

that would be key. I have sent out messages to people that may know, or may be able to find out, but i have not had success.
heck, If it can be done in the terminal (turning on items) i can make a shortcut that would do it.. but i have had no success with that either.
It's not possible I think.
You can use an MHL enabled tv wich powers MHL, (so you don't need the adapter) but how do you want to split that?
You can split the cables from the samsung adapter, so you have the MHL ones(6) and the usb ones(5).
But what then?
You need to connect the MHL ones to an hdmi cable, and connect it with an MHL enabled tv. And the usb ones to an usb port for OTG.
But will that even work with this S3?, because it is designed to get power from your charger via the extra usb port on the adapter.
Maybe it only works with the adapter, and not even with an MHl enabled tv...
I think somebody needs to connect the S3 to an MHL enabled tv, if that works you can modify the adapter and use the usb as OTG.

I found (and shared) the MHL value, and we already know the OTG value.. but it only seems logical there is ANOTHER value to activate both at the same time. we are postulating, the the reasoning behind the 11 pin, is to allow both. If adding just an OTG cable turned on MHL too, it would cause issues without an MHL connection. and the same with MHL activating OTG, without an OTG device connected. like i said, this is postulation at the moment, but there SHOULD be a thrid value to enable both at the same time. that value would be used by a future peice of hardware that does a whole "PC MODE".
and if it does not exist, it CAN be done, we just need more "stuff" a way to enable a special switch if you will.
some people are saying you can connect straight to an MHL enabled TV, but that has not been done yet (and since there are no 11 pin MHL cables, that are not adapters, it seem unlikell that anyone will until said cable exists. the S3 cannot send MHL signal over the usb part, it has to be either the extra 6 pins, or with the 11 to 5 pin adapter.)
essentially, the pins are there, and with some special software, or a hidden resistor value as to yet, unfound, and some custom hardware (as of now NOTHING 11 pin, has 11 pins in it) it SHOULD be possible.
but there is nothing that has been found (hardware wise) that is even modifyable to work.... yet.
What I don't understand, why does MHL only work with the power connected?
They could easily make an MHL cable with the 11 pin, and hdmi. That should work for only MHL.
Only no go I can think is that MHL drains your battery because of always having your screen on, and the MHL output.
So they decided to use the adapter with power, otherwise you can't use MHL feature very long before your battery is empty
I think inside the adapter they only use the pins for giving power, and not the full 5 pin support for OTG, and therefore OTG doesn't work when you want to connect something.
Inside the ROM they have maybe build in something that MHL will only work when power is connected.
Maybe the solution is very simple, modify the adapter so full 5 pins are connected.

The note 2 and the s3 have different hml adapters. You will also need a converter.
On the monoprice link you posted, youll notice ab asterisk next to the s3. Same applies to the note 2.

I just got a Samsung HDTV Adapter Tip (5 to 11 Pin) Model EPL-FU10BEBSTD, which has micro-USB female to male; it enabled my TMobile "HDMI connection kit" that had worked with Galaxy S2 Hercules to work now with my Galaxy Note II. The connection kit was expensive, but has a 10' cable from the MHL adapter body to the male micro-usb plug, as well as a 5' cable to the TV HDMI, and a wall charger to power the adapter body. So the arrangement is quite flexible once installed.
I was hoping someone could help me with this problem also. I have a hdmi capable monitor that I would like to hook my note2 up to but for whatever reason the monitor will not detect the signal. i have tried rebooting and connecting it various ways but no dice.
the only thing i can think of is that its the rom im using which is myrom's latest version
Do you have 5pin or 11pin mhl cable? Note2 requires 11pin one.

I was told you need an S3 cable. Here's the one I use.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/310491287097?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648
Yea you guys are right you need 11 pin for the note 2. the sgs2 used 5 pin so if you have one for your older phone you need a new one or I think they make a converter too. I would suggest getting right from samsung. it may cost more but you get what you pay for usually and samsung makes the best stuff when it comes to that. Also another thing to consider while you are on samsungs website they have a multimedia dock that is on backorder right now but for a 100 dollars it turns your note2 into a pc basically. It has 3 full size usb ports so you can hook up a mouse keyboard and external hard drive and it has the hdmi port and an auido port so you can hook it up to a hdmi tv/ monitor and multimedia speaker system. I was going to get a new computer but I found this thing. So basically I can have an android desktop. It dont get better than that. Now wit dropbox and mobile odin and this exynos exploit we really dont need to hook up to a pc to root so there is no real reason for it. Just something to think about.
This is really helpful. My question is will this charge your phone while you are connected to the tv? Also, I see some of the description on ebay says it might not work if you are rooted.

I am rooted; The MHL/HDMI system works well, if that is your concern. The charger that I use for the MHL adapter is much lower amperage than the one that came with the Galaxy Note 2, so I would guess that charging might be slow if you are watching a movie that way, or maybe not even keep up, but I don't have the patience to do the test (or watch movies that way).
Hmmmm!!!!
I just got the Samsung dock and can't connect with HDMI on rooted stock.
The phone detects the dock and charges up, but no signal to the screen. Also tried hooking it up with the TV and projector using two different custom rom and separate HDMI cables and no dice.
Guess the dock is defective.
Just curious if anyone has gotten the keyboard and mouse working on a lapdock with the Note 2. The HDMI works perfectly, but the keyboard and mouse don't work. I don't know if it is possible, but it would be great if someone knows how to make this happen.
Here's a picture of my set up. Everything is connected so it *should* work. I'm thinking that it is a driver issue.
(The lapdock keyboard & mouse work great with Ubuntu 12.04, & Windows 7, & Raspberry Pi (Raspian), so I know that my connections are fine.)
Thanks!
Hmm, guess I'll be able to answer my own question after a bit of research. It seems that the Note 2 (like the S3) can't provide MHL & OTG at the same time.
Not sure if there is a way around this. I wonder if Samsung's SmartDock works, but I don't want to spend $100 to find out.
I'm increasingly interested in trying just this, smart dock + lapdock. Hard to imagine that it wouldn't work, but I wouldn't mind confirmation if anyone has tried it. The impressive low prices on lapdocks in the secondary market kinda offsets (and also kinda shames) the ridiculously overpriced smart dock.
I wonder if the lapdock's battery can provide as much power as the smart dock needs or if I'd have to have an external battery too.

the lap dock should provide 1 amp which is what the atrix needed and the chargers it came with. the s3 has a smart dock and it too only has 1 amp chargers...
plus I don't see the smart dock pulling more than 200mA it has to provide the s3 with at least 750 mA for the charge to survive mhl.
regardless amp drain in android devices is adaptive. even if the dock needs a full 800mA the phone will try to survive with the rest draining battery of course but working none the less just like trying to charge our 2A monster with a Bluetooth 150mA charger. it will try but at best slow down the discharge

Hi I have got an S3 MHL(11pin) HDMI cable. I have tested HDMI & OTG simultaneously.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061&page=7
It is working perfectly with my 24inch LED monitor and a USB hub containing 2 pen drives and one wireless keyboard & mouse
Now the next move i got atrix lapdock and try to connect the HDMI out from mobile to Lapdock (with necessary adopters) but i am getting only green screen.
Lapdock is working with other HDMI sources....
Any idea on how to get my note 2 HDMI working in my lapdock?...

I've never gotten a green screen so I have no idea. And, you already did the basic troubleshooting. Are you using the Smartdock or something different? If you aren't using the Smartdock, maybe pick one up to see if it works. If it doesn't fix the problem, you can always return the Smartdock.

Based on what you are saying, it sounds like the issue is between your lapdock & MHL cable. Like I said in my previous post, I'd pick up a Samsung SmartDock and see if it works. Just make sure that yo buy from somewhere that you can easily return it in case it doesn't work.

Do you use the original samsung MHL cable?...
I am using Chinese version of MHL.
HDMI troubleshooting guide says the below....
The green screen problem could be due to HDCP non compliance or syncing problem..

I've already got a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I'm gonna order a MicroUSB to HDMI adapter and go that route. It'll be cheaper and less to carry. When I travel I'll just be able to plug into the hotel TV and go wild!
There's a YouTube video of someone demonstrating it, just search YouTube for "Samsung Note 2 Mobile Desktop with a Bluetooth keyboard mouse"

i had a similar problem, its was a shotty solder job on the "Budget adapter" (HDMI PINS). i took it apart and cleaned it, works perfectly now.
Plug your phone in, WAIT 5 SECONDS, Then lift up.....If you still have a problem, push F11 on the Lapdock... that manual cycles the resolution modes...at least thats what the manual says....
As far as the USB key board goes, im currently working a solution.... you have to power the MHL THROUGH THE DOCKS usb port using a donated USB cable with the end cut, solder it in directly on the board of the adapter itself, then make a micro usb extension that has the power wires cut and D- D+ reversed... I have a motorola ATRIX and im looking at the board, it looks like they have been reversed....ill post up some pics if i find this to be true.

Also, sorry to bring up and old post, but I have a reason to believe that the ZOOM bluetooth keyboard uses the same 30 pin connector thats inside the lapdock (connects everything together) all the connectors are the same, except on the ZOOM the other end is a BLUETOOTH module...this would solve the whole issue... im about to get one on ebay. Ill report back in a few days.
I WILL NOT LET THIS THING BEAT ME
after searching a little bit about 11 pin port in galaxy s3 and take apart an 11pin to 5 pin adapter i am thinking about make DIY smart dock for galaxy s3
i ordered mhl adapter and waiting for it mean while i tried to connect usb otg and extra micro usb connector together so i can use otg and charge the phone at the same time. but the problem is when i short ground and seance pin for otg ; charging doesn't work.
so any suggestion about the project?
i attached a plan of my project here
edited:after failing my 1st attempt i succeeded to make it work on my 2nd try!
this time i opened a 11 pin to 5 pin adapter. it has a small resistor which is connected ground to sense pin for hdmi out put. i removed that resistor and i connected 5 extra wire in the adapter 1. vcc 2. data+ 3. data - 4. sense 5. ground ( i showed in picture) . then i connected sense and ground with a 40.2k resistor.
then the 4 wire, which i i connected in 11 to 5 pin adapter (vcc, data+,data-, and ground) , goes to a femele usb where you will connect usb devices or usb hub.
and thats it!! hope you can try it too. if if have any other question just ask me

AW: diy smardock for galaxy s3
You forgot the vcc at the otg side, but anyway it can't work.
While charging you send 5v through the micro usb to the phone.
But in otg mode the phone will send 5v to the usb connector to supply power for the connected device.
I think your only chance is to use the inductive connectors to charge your phone while in otg mode.

There seems no way like you want it. I told you the problem.
You have to use the Pins for the wireless charger (QI-charger) under the battery cover.

charging via the back pins while in OTG mode with throw a message popup that says over current protection and shuts down the S3
at least it does on mine.
I have the smart dock and after opening, it does contain quite a bit of electronics

I have a suspicion that the IC to the left of the Realtek one is the brains of the board. The RT chip does the hdmi out conversion and the other two longer IC's are usb host and usb audio. Can't make out the printed data on the unknown chip, but my best bet is if we can get a dump of whats on there then we might have a good chance of DIY hdmi/otg capabilities. i'm no expert by far, but just throwing ideas out there.

i got otg and charging work together.
as in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061 i just connect ground and sense pin with a 40.2 k ohm resistor.
i ordered 40.2 k ohm resistor which i just got tonight. the hdmi adapter i have is a cheap and old one. its not mirroring the screen. i ordered a new Rocketfish MHL HDTV Adapter . hope that will work!! waiting for that to arrive!!!!
here i am giving 2 screen shot
mess lol
and here what i did so far....

Great work, necomer. I've also been trying that for two months now, but haven't been able to make it work. I have the 40,2 KOhm resistor between sense and GND, and am able to launch smart dock mode on some ROMs I have tried. So, which ROM are you running? My only idea here is that maybe you having a US S3 is what does the difference (well, I'm assuming that, maybe you have an international one).
Thanks in advance, and once again, great work :good:
Hi. Thanks for reviewing I am using us galaxy s3 and just the stock touch wiz rom android 4.1.1.

I'm pretty sure your buying the wrong MHL adapter. The Note II and the s3 have a different micro usb than any other phone and require the samsung
MHL adapter.
Not sure what you are trying to do?
Amazon sells a combo cable so you can use OTG and charge the device at the same time. I use it to connect a 1TB portable drive to my S3 and Tab 2 10.1.
I bought the official Samsung HDMI adapters for both devices. They are powered and stream over HDMI to my TV just fine. Works with just about everything I've tried although some services require some workarounds. Copy protection crap.
What you are trying to do sounds risky. You might fry the phone.
I apologize if I haven't grasped your intentions but I'm kind of slow.
Edit: I think I may get it now. Are you trying to power, feed external data through OTG and then stream out to an HDMI display?
Dumb question as I said I'm slow but, how about the official Samsung HDMI adapter and use the power in port with a powered OTG combo cable?

what i am trying to do is, use otg , charge the phone and use hdmi at the same time. i thought it would be easy bcz samsung made new 11 pin connector in Galaxy s3 . so apparently its supposed to work ,as they are not using same pin for transferring data. But i dont have any idea about internal proses. while charging and otg at the same time is possible, dont you think we can connect hdmi with it in any way?
well all this is just guessing from my little knowledge. i want some suggestion from those who worked on this and correct my mistakes

Maybe... it's a HDCP problem...
If your TV don't support HDCP function(or authentication failed), then MHL chipset will show a black screen
(HDCP : High-definition Digital Content Protection)
I was going to this topic, being all hopeful that I finally might get my S3 in OTG+Charge mode. And then it turned out it only worked on a phone still running 4.1.1. I have 4.1.2, and OTG+charge did work for me before, but it seems Samsung broke it in 4.1.2. It is probably the fault of the kernel that came with the XXELLC (a stock 4.1.2 ROM) update, but how to fix it is beyond me.
Are you serious! I won't update mine then. I need to use that together! !!
Thanks for the information
