I heard that the Mango update enabled NFC support. And I know the N9 supports it.
Just wondering if NFC is on board so it can be used when Isis launches this year.

was wondering the same thing. I came across a few sites that said the whole lumia series has hidden NFC and is waiting for a update for it. specifically the lumia 610 was stated but if the lowest ranged phone of the lumia series has hidden nfc why wouldn't the highest range not?
since Nokia has accessories that use NFC it would be dumb for them to not put a NFC chip in these phones.
So I've been trying to compile a well rounded list of places that sell NFC tags, for people that want to purchase tags online and locally. Here is what I have found so far, if you know of a place (especially locally) please post it in this thread and I'll try to keep the OP updated. Keep in mind that I havent ordered from all of these places, therefore I remind you that this is not an endorsement of the quality of service of any of the places listed. Buy at your own risk – as always.
GENRAL INFO:
[Q] Does my phone need NFC built-in in order to use NFC tags?
[A] Yes, at the moment, with the exception of some UK services like Barclays (afaik)
[Q] What formatting should I buy when looking for an NFC tag?
[A] As long as you are on Android 4.0.3 and above (you can use NXP Tag Writer to format on 4.0.2, thx krohnjw) you shouldn't have an issue with unformatted or NDEF formatted tags. With NFC Task Launcher and others on the Google Play Store you should be able to format your own. Pre 4.0.3 look for NDEF formatted tags, as there may be an issue formatting your own.

Nope. It needs to be built into the phone currently...
Just a quick note: unless touchatag has changed what they are shipping, their tags are write locked and written for use with their web service.

It's not necessary to buy the tags pre-formatted, the One X got no problem writing to the tags

Just for accuracy, the bug is present in 4.0.2, fixed in 4.0.3. If you are on 4.0-4.0.2 you can't format blank tags using Android's libraries. However NXP's Tag Writer will do manual formatting.
Sparkfun Electronics (www.sparkfun.com) also sells them! Great website also.
I wish I had known about NXP tagwriter earlier. For several months I kept telling people to either wait for 4.0.3 or install a mod. A friend just tested it and it works perfectly, format with NXP and then use NFC Task Launcher with no problem in 4.0.0-4.0.2.

it also work like a charm in my Xperia S stock 2.3.X … Task launcher is quite good the only weak point it’s he use large memory tags for is instruction instead of (for example) the couple : Liveware , SmartTags from Sony witch can use Ultralight Mifare
Thanks for nice list!
Great list. Thanks!

As far as I know, there aren't any "specs" on NFC-chips.
It uses the BCM20793 http://www.broadcom.com/products/NFC/NFC-Solutions/BCM2079x-Family
This is somewhat worrying/interesting - pretty much every other NFC-enabled Android phone uses NXP's chips. What if this guarantees that network SIM-based payments won't be compatible?

Broadcom nfc chips support multiple Secure Elements in one device. (competition for ISIS and Google?)
Devices with a broadcom nfc chip probably can't read/write Mifare Classic tags. Other (mifare) nfc tags wil be no problem.
Yeah, since they didn't use an NXP chip, the Nexus 4 (and Nexus 10) will not read/write Mifare Classic 1K NFC Tags (because technically they don't adhere to the NFC Forum specifications). The bummer on that is the next best option is the NTAG 203 which has about 1/5 the memory but cost more. The good news is the memory is enough for most task launching NFC apps to do most things you'd want. The bad news is it's often not enough to create a Vcard. The other next best option are the Topaz 512byte chips, but they are significantly more expensive.
I just found this out the hard way when one of my customers contacted me about his Mifare 1K tags that weren't working with his Nexus 4. I'm having new tags manufactured in the NTAG format but the Mifare 1K are still best for most people since there's no such thing as too much memory if the cost is the same or less.

Hello, MIFARE 1K is work on my Nexus 4, read/write, use NFC Tack Launcher.
Does anyone know if they can read / write basic ISO 14443 A and B Cards / Tags?

You can't actually write to the NFC, but the task launcher remembers the tag and assigns a function to it
I want to write a tag, that can be read by both the galaxy s3 and the nexus 4 to check in on Facebook. Can I write one with the n4, and is the n203 capable enough? Seems a little low memory for a check in data string.

Does anyone know what NFC standards the BCM20793 in the Nexus 4 supports? Broadcom doesn't actually post the datasheets for their products online.

I think the Broadcom chip is NFC Forum type 1-4 compliant, which means it's able to use all NFC tag types Topaz, Mifare Ultralight C, Mifare S50 and the UPM Ntag. What it is NOT compatible with are the Mifare Classic NFC tags.
The NXP PN65 chip which is on most devices OTHER than Nexus 4 and 10 is able to use 1 additional NFC type which is Mifare Classic. Mifare Classic is actually the thing that's NOT NFC Forum compliant.
The new Samsung S4 also ships with a Broadcom chip so it's likely it's also not compatible with Mifare Classic tags.

Hello. Does anybody knows the Moto Z Play NFC manufacturer?
My problem is: the local (where I live) transportation companies use a card ticketing system, based on Mifare Classic tag. They provided an application that allows to read, buy credits and recharge it, since the mobile device is equipped with compatible NFC chip.
Considering Mifare Classic is a standard defined by NXP, it's reasonable that a mobile device that uses a NFC chip manufactured by NFC would work with the card from the transporation companies.
Does anybody have this information?
Thanks in advance!
Do all A50 model variants have NFC or just the devices with "N" in the model No?
Trying to piece together the info on which A50 models with which firmware variants support Google Pay and Samsung Pay. For instance there's a SM-A505G and a SM-A505GN, a SM-A505F and a SM-A505FN. I was under the impression that the "N" in the model number meant the device has NFC and devices without the "N" do not?

Is there any definitive way to know which firmwares on which models support samsung pay, or which LTE bands are supported on which models? There's SAMMOBILE, but it doesn't have all A50 models listed and not sure if the LTE info is correct on there or not.
A505W supports NFC
The Canadian version A505W does support NFC. I am using one right now.

No dual SIM on that one though right? Does Samsung Pay and Visual Voicemail work on your A50?
I don't think the N in the model numbers corresponds with having NFC or not. The last 5 characters of the model have something to do with the region and country.
Any mid range phone that doesn't have NFC these days should be a crime

No dual sim, Samsung pay works.
My service provider doesn't use visual voicemail so I can't comment on that.
Just learned that my new A505-F / DS does NOT have NFC. I was setting up GPay and says it does not support it. Doing a search, seems that the FN does.
Also FM model have an NFC (+MTP for magnetic stripe card emulation).

There is a NFC chip in Samsung A50. The part number is GH42-06264A . So, even though the model number is same, they may manufacture with or without the hardware. If the hardware is there, they may have disabled it. For ex: All Non-US Mobile phone manufacturers were asked to disable NFC chip by the US government.
Also, You need DRM keys to enable the hardware. As far as I know, there are no such keys released by Samsung
