Just read this below. Soon it will be illegal to root/jailbreak a phone or unlock it. Hope this isn't true.
While the oft-criticized Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) makes it illegal to bypass DRM, when the law was based back in 1998 a provision allowed the Librarian of Congress to grant certain exemptions. As Ars Technica notes, the latest triennial review of DMCA exemptions (pdf) again highlights how arbitrary and bizarre the DMCA can be. Under the latest exemptions, you're allowed to legally jailbreak your smartphone, but you're not allowed to jailbreak your tablet -- and overall, jailbreaking is something that the DMCA will be making illegal for phone bought in 2013 forward:

I interpret that as applying to flashing your phone to work on another carrier's network, not obtaining root, or admin, rights on a Linux-based software platform.
ROM - OdexedBlue
Baseband - LI3
Kernel - Stock LI3
XDA Premium - Support our developers, modders, themers, and other contributors!
Rooting/flashing ROMs will not be illegal. Just unlocking phones so they can be moved to other carriers w/out current carrier's permission.
Hasnt Apple and Google already been found to not be able to do anything if we do so or not?

When they say that jailbreaking tablets will be illegal, does that mean rooting, or unlocking to go to a different carrier?

US Supreme Court ruled that rooting was legal. I think it was a year/two ago.
They've been barking up this tree for a while now and we've always been granted the exception. I don't see this changing, especially not in 2013.

That article did not pertain to rooting in anyway shape or form. It was solely about flashing your phone to a carrier other than which it was purchased on.

Seems rooting/jailbreaking smartphones is ok, not ok for tablets. See below. Thought it's interesting that the user doesn't own the software on the device which can make it illegal in certain cases such as tablets.
Jailbreaking/rooting. Starting January 2013, you can legally jailbreak or root your smartphone, which may include the iPhone or any Android phone. This was the same case as in the 2010 rules. However, this time, the ruling is explicit that the jailbreaking is only legal for “the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of [lawfully obtained] applications with computer programs on the telephone handset.”
Meanwhile, tablets are a different thing altogether. The Librarian of Congress says that “the record lacked a sufficient basis to develop an appropriate definition for the ‘tablet’ category of devices, a necessary predicate to extending the exemption beyond smartphones.” The worry here is that other tablet-like devices may be defined as a tablet, and therefore enjoy the same DRM circumventions. These may include laptops, e-book readers, and even handheld videogame devices.
In short: you can legally root your smartphone but not your tablet.
Users can only arbitrarily unlock phones purchased before January 2013. Phones bought after that date will require the original carrier’s permission before you can legally unlock these.
This change in ruling came from the Librarian’s view that software is not actually owned by the user upon purchase, but you are only granted rights and licenses under the EULA. As such, unlocking a phone (which is essentially software in nature) without the consent of the original carrier is no longer in fair use.
In short: starting 2013, you need to ask explicit permission from your carrier before legally unlocking your phone.

The following are most likely “Original Development”:
Official releases of highly original and upstream custom ROMs (built from the ground up with significant original development within them
Official releases/development of such original ROMs, perhaps posted by the maintainer or their nominated person.
A significant “first” in development for a device. Significant is subjective, but it is likely something which took considerable time/effort, and is generally accepted by developers to be significant and non-trivial.
Kernels which are built with beneficial changes that are not simply pulled from other kernels already available. Some element of original work is expected.
Tools and utilities with a clear purpose, and which are well-made, and useful to users. They should have an element of originality, either in purpose or through significant improvement in the means of operation.
Significant port of a ROM from one device to another, giving enhanced features or functionality to users of the target device. The port should be beneficial (a port from two virtually identical devices isn’t original development, it’s winzipping, and nobody really benefits from this, as it’s not development)
The following are most likely not “Original Development”, and should be posted in the "Development” subforum:
Your own “unofficial” stock build of your favourite original, source-built (or otherwise) ROM, particularly where an official or maintainer-endorsed thread exists already.
Minor derivatives of other ROMs with little or no changes, or ROMs consisting of “placebo” features as a main constituent or claim.
Renames or rebadges of others’ work – these don’t belong on XDA at all! Refer to rule 12 for more information.
Reposts of existing ROMs with small changes (i.e. kitchen work, such as adding a couple of apps). If you could realistically distribute your changes as an “addon pack” above and beyond a ROM, you should do so. In addition, your “ROM” would not be original development as it would be substantially identical to the original ROM.
A thread created with unrealistic goals that are clearly unachievable by those starting the thread. This is not intended to discourage high aspirations, rather to prevent threads porting Windows Phone 8 to the HTC Wallaby. This is pretty much common sense.
A ROM where a main or significant claim/feature is graphical changes to the user interface (ie. Themed ROM)

Chyna Phones Stealth Spying & Stealing Personal Data
Thanks very much.
It's not good, but I assume it's mostly for devices from China running ColorOs. My plan is to restore and convert to OxygenOS and delete any bloat apps.
If you want privacy, go off the internet and live in the woods. There's no phone that doesn't spy on you
They do, which is why they are removing the abilities of users to root / install custom recoveries because they don't want the spyware removed.

Thank you all for all responses.
The point is to avoid the worst of the worst- China seeing and recording everything done on the phone \ dataset for sale on dark web.
Not counting on any government help- Apple now has succumbed to encryption backdoor, law being proposed in UK to ban sale and possession of encrypted phone, etc. ad nauseam.
Not asking for total privacy- for that we can look up Rob Braxman Tech on social media for de-Googled \ de-crapified \ de-Androided \ etc. \ removable battery phones...
Personally, much of tech & moneymaking knowledges learned \ new products \ best pricing has often been thru the big bad Tech corps using personal info for targeted ads...

False. Chinese spy identified folks. (Although for Chinese citizens, agreed the most hostile nation is their own. Family members and friends disappearing to concentration camps for speaking out on social media, etc.)

Here here. 100% the correct frame of mind. Hostile nation that actively wants to harm us. By the way speaking as a OnePlus 11 preorder holder lol. Decided to give OP one last chance since I haven't used a OP phone since the OP5. Maybe I can use some packet sniffing apps to check for Chinese domains.
The best bet is to use ADB to disable or uninstall any OnePlus specific apps. On the OnePlus 8 Pro, it was easy to uninstall any apps that had .cn in the app name.

I've heard in some cases uninstalling system apps can result in OTA's failing system verification phase. Does anyone know if OP does any system partition verification when performing OTA's?
Android phones transmit personal info to China without consent
Even to service providers that don't provide service.
And we know that all Chinese companies but the very small by law have embedded government & military liaisons that vacuum all data.
I'm not convinced that that scoped personal data (& user actions) doesn't also make its way to the dark web for sale to criminals and brokers that allow our agencies & law enforcement to indirectly obtain our whitewashed data otherwise unlawful for them to directly access.
At least I would want to avoid criminals stealing personal identity \ funds. Some of the price quotes on their forums are so low...
Thanks all.

@Mgm2023 you are required to comply with the Rules for Posting In Development and Telegram Policy stickied at the top of this section.
Further, you must comply with the Forum Rules:
12. Sharing
XDA-Developers is based on the principle of sharing to transmit knowledge. This is the cornerstone of our site. Our members and developers freely share their experience, knowledge, and finished works with the rest of the community to promote growth within the developer community, and to encourage those still learning to become better. There are those, however, who take advantage of this model and try to make personal gains from the hard work of others.
In order to preserve the delicate balance between sharing for the good of the community and blatant self-promotion, regular members and developers alike must understand (and agree) to the following:
12.1. Give credits where due - Credits and acknowledgements for using and releasing work which is based on someone else's work are an absolute must. Works reported to have no credits will be taken down until proper acknowledgements are added by the member in question;
12.2. Courtesy - While most of the work released on our site falls under the umbrella of open source, that is not the only license model being used by developers on xda-developers. In order to prevent problems, we ask that if you decide to base your work on someone else's that you check the license model being used (as it might not be as permissive as one may think);
12.3. Re-releasing other's works as your own is forbidden. The code that you release into the wild must have something beyond minor aesthetic changes that makes it better than the last. As this can be subjective, kang reports will be reviewed on a case by case basis. If you feel that your code has been kanged, please contact the Developer Relations Team (DRT) if you cannot solve the issue amicably via PM. Please understand that you will be asked to provide evidence to substantiate your claim;
12.4. Developers can issue take down requests (by contacting the Dev Relations team) under the following circumstances:

This does not appear to be your own project. You must indicate as much, and you must have permission from the developers to share it.
