[Q] How to edit ROM ? - HTC Desire 300

Hello!
I want to make custom ROM for Desire 300 and right now I have I think it's original ROM. (I downloaded it from Google Drive).
Now when I enter that ROM I can see this: http://prntscr.com/6swvgq
Now I want to edit system file, but when I try this pops up: http://prntscr.com/6swwiz
How to enter system file ?

You are opening it with DAEMON Tools. One question. Why you need to open system file? Well, you can extract it, and view what's inside

When I open it with Windows default program (Windows Explorer) this pops up: http://prntscr.com/6sxqzr
I need to open it to modify system apks, build.prop (or something like that).

Changing the Start Button Icon

I've seen a lot of people asking how folks have changed the Windows logo to the HTC one and so on. I am one of those people!
There's a thread over in the Diamond Forum here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437307, that discusses altering the taskbar icons.
I've had a read of that but it doesn't appear to discuss the start button. I've currently got a cab installed that gave me coloured icons on the taskbar but also the 3d MS Office style start button. I like the icons but not that start button.
Is there anyway someone could provide an idiot/noob style guide for altering that icon. I'd love to have the Vista start button on my HD (attached image) but have no idea how to go about it aside from I think it has something to with .dll files.
Can anyone explain this? Anyone? I know there would be a lot of people grateful for it! I've Googled and used the search but just cannot seem to find anything!
I've attached a mock-up of my ideal; I've got the coloured icons, just the start button to go!
I think....
the explanation is to edit the shellres.192.dll file here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2791169&postcount=3
using the process here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2791165&postcount=1
No?
EDIT: I am going to try myself this evening with your very nice icon...will let you know how it goes, if you don't beat me to it!
I believe you can do it with Wisbar.
Wisbar is not free.

you had a chance at it yet? did it work?
...........
This is the thread I used to alter the Windows logo to a HTC logo among other things in this thread. It's dead easy,
1) Unsign the file using Unsigner linked to in the thread further up (on page 2 of the Unsigner thread there's a .bat file that I found gave a better idea of whether it had worked or not).
2) Open the file in Reshacker and go to Icon on the left hand side and click it to expand it. Go to number 292, click it and it will expand to show 1033. Click 1033 and it should be the start menu icon. Right click on 1033 and select Replace Resource. Select Open File With New Icon and find your new (resized) icon. Double click it and it will show a preview of new and old. Click Replace in the bottom right corner.
3) Save the newly modified file.
4) Sign the modified file using Ssigner linked to in the thread above. CHECK THE TEXT FILE IT CREATES TO MAKE SURE IT SIGNED OK. Don't forget this bit as it will mean a hard reset if you do (as I learnt).
5) If you've not installed SDKCert.cab some time in the past. download it from here, copy it to the phone and install it.
6) Copy the file to the Windows directory on the phone using Resco Explorer or Total Commander.
7) Reboot the phone.
how did you copy shellres.192.dll? it says "Acces denied" even with resco. No chance to renaming also
To get the file in the first place you need a program called ROM Extractor on the phone to get the file from ROM. There are also different varients of the ROM for different locales. There's a description in the link above.
thanks for your efforts but seems a little complicated TotalCommander did the trick, resco seems to have some security check problems
anyway, unsigner doesn't work so i'm stuck

Try the .bat file in the second page of the Unsigner thread. Copy Unsigner, the .bat file and the file you want to unlock to the same directory and double click the .bat file. Also, because the file is from ROM make sure it's not marked as Read Only when you get it to your PC before unsigning it. If it's from ROM they're usually Read Only for a start.

Not yet. Just got back from work. I need a different job...
I will try tomorrow. I have been meaning to give this s shot for a while now, and the icon you posted is what I have been looking for.
the bat only automize the process... It doesn't work anyway as it still use UnSigner
Do you have the cab to change the other icons? I had a quick look on the diamond thread but couldn't find the exact ones you have! Thanks.

True, but when I tried Unsigner on it's own it didn't give any feedback as to what it was doing (or if it did I missed it) so I changed 150+ icons only to find it hadn't been unsigned and therefore couldn't be resigned. At least with the batch file I can check it's been properly unsigned before making changes.
Does it give you any error messages when you try Unsigner?

that's the point: no errors from unsigner, but resourcehacker can't open my file (not valid bla bla bla)
In which case I'd say the file hasn't copied across properly from the phone. Reshacker should be able to open the file and allow editing even if it's still signed. I'd try ROM Extractor to copy the file from ROM to elsewhere on the phone and then copy that across to the PC.

uhm seems reasonable
but I don't want to extract all my whole rom for a stupid dll... I extracted with total commander, isn't supposed to work this way?
Nope, certain ROM files can't be copied using normal file copy programs. I've found that they try and copy, then say the "File already exists, do you wish to replace?" and then whatever you select you're left with a 0k file with nothing in it. The ROM extractor doesn't copy the whole ROM. When you launch it you get a list of all the ROM files. Double click the one you want to extract, give it a location (\ usually for the root directory of the phone) and a name and click Extract.
Ok, I will try. But how to replace when modified? If I can't even read it, how will I replace it?

1) Download the following file: http://xeno.bemaniso.ws/Launcher2.apk
2) Place file on the root of your SD Card.
3) Reboot into recovery, same method that you use to flash roms.
4) Under Clockwork, select Partitions.
5) Mount System through Clockwork
6) Unplug and Re-Plug in USB Cord to device or else you won't be able to continue.
7) Open a command prompt or whatever you use to use ADB, type adb shell
8) cd /system/app
9) rm ADWLauncher.apk
10) cp /sdcard/Launcher2.apk /system/app/
11) exit
12) Reboot phone normally.
Next time you flash a rom use winrar or 7zip to open the zip (do not unzip or extract it!!!). Go to system/app/adwlauncher.apk and delete it. Then drag and drop whatever launcher you want to use. Flash the new rom and you're done.

I thought stuff like that never works. ROM's and any other files such as apk's are usually signed. Therefore any modifications won't work and the package is corrupt unless you re-sign it. At least in my experience.

Clockwork let us flash unsingned .zip files, there is an option and you choose if you want clockwork to check if the files are singed or not, and as long as you dont screw and move stuff where is not supposed to be your not gonna get an "installaion aborted" message.... i always do that to remove apps i dont use from system/app before i flash the rom and i've never had a problem
but back on topic... yeah you can do what the second post says, or if you dont want launcher2 just install the launcher you want to use from the market or sdcard if you have the apk, set it to deafult home app then go to recovery and do steps 4 to 9 and reboot, adw should be gone.
Once you get everything set up, resigning is simple. Since you don't have to resign with this method though, that task it pointless.

I've never signed any of my rooms, ever. If you modify everything without unzipping it, using 7zip or the default package manager in ubuntu, there's no need to, regardless of what it is that you're replacing/modifying.

[Q] how to push bootanimation.zip into oxygen rom?

oxygen has second boot screen until "update-oxygen-1.0.1-signed",so i want to push bootanimation.zip into oxygen rom,i did like this..i built a file under data\local ,then i put the "bootanimation.zip" into the file ,then signed it,but i have always failed,i need somebody's help.......
i am a rookie and i does not know many english words, please forgive me,
What I always do is to open up the .rar (not unzipping it, but really just double click it), and poke around until I find the folder where the bootanimation.zip is.
Then I delete that .zip, and then using WinRar, click "Add" on the top left, and selected your desired bootanimation.zip, all of this WHILE still in the same folder where the original bootanimation was in.
When done, just sign it, then flash it as you would a normal Rom.

thank you for replying my post~
i have another question ,that is , i did not find "bootanimation.zip " in the oxygen rom ,maybe i did not find it in the right place, but oxygen rom did not have a folder called data/local...
Right, Oxygen seems to be a new breed of ROMs (hence, the no data/local), which I honestly haven't have the luxury of time to try yet (damn, lol).
Anyway, if you searched the oxygen thread, this post would have come up.
Try it and see
It's in /system/media
If you are S-OFF you can just adb push C:\asd\asd\asd.zip /system/media/bootanimation.zip while the phone is running.
Otherwise you need to do it in recovery.
But wm's method is really the easiest way if you want to change your bootanimation before you have flashed an update.
While I'm at it: could you guide me to a thread/site where I can find infos regarding signing zip files? I only found really old threads :S
Thank you.

I cannot remember the creator of the program, but I used this thing called autosign.bat, which I got off the xda forum.
I'm sure you can find it around somewhere in the forum.

actually,i did it in this way, first, you need have the program called java, after you download it ,you have to set a java's environment which you can search it by yourself, attention: if you do not know much java languages ,advice you to install it in the default location. second, you need a Auto-sign tool which you can also find it by searching in xda. Then you should unzip the Auto-sign.rar under anywhere you can find it .
After you have done all of these, you can make your own rom !(all of the work below is in the unzipped folder called Auto-sign)
put the rom you have reformed into the folder called "Auto-sign",then ,you need to rename the rom to "update",after that ,double click it the Sign.bat in the folder, wait for awhile, you will get another rom called "update_signed",it is the rom you can flash into your Desire. English is not my mother tongue, if you can not understand what i have said, please reply me with simple and exact words, then, we can communicate with eachother.

[HOW TO] Extract Rom.zip From RUU

Extracting ROM files from HTC RUU
Official HTC ROM updates are released as RUU (ROM Update Utility), which you run on your (Windows) PC to get the target device updated automatically.
Some of the big brains in the Android community release RUUs re-packaged into signed update files,
which in turn allow for whatever ROM customization you can imagine.
In this how to I will explain how to extract ROM files from a RUU image,
which you can then customize and use to flash your device without the fear of a new bootloader possibly making your device unrootable.
Requirements :
Windows PC,
Microsoft Process Monitor,
File Archiver capable of extracting ZIP files(eg, 7ZIP),
Official HTC RUU for your Android device.
The process of extracting ROM files from a RUU is really straightforward.
The idea behind it is that the self-contained update utility first needs to unpack the update payload into a temporary folder before pushing it onto the device.
This is when we grab the ROM file...
1. download the official RUU
2. start Process Monitor.
3. press CTRL+L
4. change "Architecture" to "Process Name"
5. leave the "is" field as it is
6. in the empty field copy and paste the name of your
RUU file (eg, RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_225512_signed.exe)
7. click "Add"
8. change "Process Name" to "Path"
9. change "is" to "Contains"
10. in the blank field type "rom.zip" (without quotes)
11. click add
Click "OK" to set the filter and then run the RUU file.
Once the utility starts switch back to Process Monitor and look for an entry in the "Path" column that ends with "\rom.zip".
Right click on that line and select "Jump to..."
this will open a Windows Explorer window in the folder which contains the zipped ROM files
Copy the "rom.zip" file to some other folder, outside of the temp RUU folder tree (eg, desktop)
Once copied, close Process Monitor and the RUU utility.
The copied "rom.zip" file contains the following files:
android-info.txt - list of CIDs this RUU will flash to,
boot.img - root file system image,
hboot (followed by a version string) - boot-loader update,
radio.img - radio driver update,
recovery.img - recovery partition image,
splash1_Hero_320x480.nb0 - boot loader splash image,
system_rel.img - system partition image,
userdata.img - data partition image.
You can now, among many other things, root the ROM
and then flash the updated boot.img and all the other image files on to your device using Recovery

rom.zip corrupted
I followed the directions and like another post in here procmon shows a blank screen. I went to task manager and opened processes and saw when it ran then clicked open file location and found it. I did this twice and both zips are corrupt. (used winzip)
error [D:\android apps\EVO root\EVO\rom.zip]: start of central directory not found; Zip file corrupt.
Possible cause: file transfer error
when I close the RUU all the files in that folder disappear so you have to leave the RUU running while you copy the zip file or it's gone.
At least that's what I saw.
update to last post
I found a zip repair tool and was able to repair and extract the 1.10.653.2 RUU rom capture. I will have to try to run it later. If anyone gets corrupted zip error, Zip Repair pro will repair it.
To get the rom zip without any errors just run the ruu.exe file, when the box with a picture of a phone pops up, click start on pc, type in "run" and click on run then in that box that pops up, type in %temp% and click ok. Another window pops up then just scroll down to the most recent folder and rom.zip will be in there, if not it will be in the next folder.
Hi,
when I try to open the rom.zip I get an error message, it just said it cannot open with 7zip and with windows it says its invalid.
I tried downloading the RUU multiple times but still the same error. I rune the RUU as administrator.
Tried copying it over to different locations and then open it.
RUU_ENRC2B_U_JB_45_O2_UK_1.14.206.13_Radio_3.1204.167.31_release_289474_signed
HTC ONE X+
Thank you
Update:
I used Zip Repair Pro.. however there is no boot.img inside the repaired zip -_-
For those which have problem with making Process Monitor detect RUU temp folder, make sure You add whole file name of RUU including .exe at the end.
Jmcclue's steps, work perfectly, Thank you post #7

note path is desktop (last post showed from temp folder) and i still get same results. did some searching and aperantly htc now signs their zip files and they can't be opened anymore. having usb issues that causes fastboot force close errors and need to be able to flash boot.img thru flashify app to return it to stock. ran the htcguru reset rom that uses aroma installer to return to stock that lets me take ota's but i get qualcom location force close and other custom roms give me issues forcing me to reset phone to stock every few days with guru installer. flashing recovery in fastboot is a chore as well. I have s-off and can keep it, but doing fastboot oem lock wont relock the bootloader, even though it shows success in cmd line. i can cid and super cid with fastboot.
it leaves me at a point where i really need to pull everything out of the rom.zip file and it wont open.
pic 1, 7zip wont open archive on desktop
pic 2, how i get recovery to flash
pic 3, results from running RUU
i have to reboot device, set comand to reboot bootloader, set command to flash recovery all faster than phone will do all commands to get it to flash, and RUU doesnt work that fast. i know im on sprint with htc one m7, but google search "extract htc zip" "extract rom.zip" both lead to this thread as top result. no other searches will tell me how to open the archive, except one that resulted in "htc signed zips can no longer be opened"
you're more than welcome to give it a go

Did HTC change the way they create the exe? I don't find it, the biggest file is data1.cab file that I can't extract.
I'm trying to extract the stock rom for an ATT HTC One Mini (m4) because RUU keeps crashing on me and won't install. I am also rooted with S-off.
If anybody can help me get the stock m4 rom so I can go back to stock, I would really appreciate it.

No they didn't change it. Some ruu's use a different format requiring the use of a tool called unruu instead of trying to capture the zip file when using the exe (I just learned this today). I've gone ahead and used unruu and the resulting zips have been put in a single tar file. you can download it from here for about 30 days after which ill have to delete the file. also i dont know which zip has what in it.

[TUTORIAL] Install ROM via sideload

I know most of you already know this, but it may help others because this is very usefull for installing kitkat.
It's a pain to copy an 1,2 GB ROM to internal storage, so sideloading (installing from PC) it's lot easier and faster.
So here's the trick.
Copy the zip you want to install in "adb" folder (archiev attached)
Reboot phone in recovery mode
Optional - do your wipes
If you have CMW
Go to install zip -> install zip from sideload
If you have TWRP
Go to advanced -> ADB sideload
connect the USB cable and run START.cmd
type "adb devices" to check if your phone is recognized and connected (skip if you know everything it's ok)
type "adb sideload kitkat.zip" (replace kitkat with zip's name)
Notes:
Ofc you need USB drivers
Ive tried that a couple times but always i get a "cannot read kitkat.zip" thing, any idea why?

Umm... Did you replace "kitkat.zip" with the actual name of your zip file (or rename your zip to "kitkat.zip")? I know it might be a very stupid question, but I can only read your post, not your mind...

Make a screenshot of what you're doing and error you get, this way will be easier for both.

First, there is no way for a rom to use ".rar" extension. After, error means that the file couldn't be read (missing or corrupted). Also you may try my method which doesn't need android SDK, so there is no complications with wrong paths or such.

Look at the screen I've attached. Are you sure your zip it's not the same have you checked it? I've highlighted the rom itself.

Ok then simply extract "VDT-V20..." from that archieve. That's the zip you have to install via sideload!

It looks to me that your screenshot is showing contents of a ZIP inside a RAR. What @roscatel means, you should extract the ZIP from the RAR that you downloaded -- it's actually an archive packed inside another archive. After that, flash the ZIP you just extracted using any method (sideload, or from recovery as usual). Do NOT rename RAR to ZIP -- it doesn't make sense, and will most definitely NOT work.

hi my pc known my device but when i write adb sideload ...zip foul (stand) 0% and i watting 15 minuts for process but nothing happening . plz help me . my device is xperia tx.. plzzzzzzzzzzzzz
install the last TWRP (flash it via bootloader), same process by opening commande window in the folder (shift+right click: then open command) and tiping command: fastboot flash recovery (name of the file).img (like that: exemple: fastboot flash recovery lastTWRP.img)
it autorize MTP transfer, so you cas access your internal storage and copy the zip file
or retrieve backups from your phone
I'm using and side load on my lge
LM-x210MA an I keep getting these different errors do I need to flash more than a twrp.imf what about sys.img root.img root-boot.img this is all a lot to take in as a first timer go easy I'm not trolling just trying to learn
