Backing up stock recovery - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking at installing twrp to achieve root. I've read a lot of threads but am still confused on how to back up the stock recovery. Any help would be appreciated.

Just download it later from XDA, that's not something very unique.. moreover you won't need it - you're going to need RUU though.. happy flashing TWRP beta.

How do I back up my stock recovery?

US Cellular has been promising Froyo for the CDMA Desire since October, and I'm tired of waiting so I'm going to root it and flash a Froyo ROM myself. I read through the unrEVOked documentation, and it mentions that if I want to install official updates in the future I need to restore the recovery image, but it doesn't tell me how to get it. How do I pull the stock recovery image from my phone so that I can flash it back on should I need to?
You can't actually backup a whole rom without rooting first. You need the custom recovery to do a nandroid backup which will back up the whole rom. If anything does go wrong or you need to reinstall then you can just use an RUU to do it. US Cellular doesn't have an RUU yet but you can use other CDMA RUU's.
So am I to understand that there is no way to back up the stock recovery, as I would have to overwrite the existing recovery just to do backups in the first place?
Yep, root access is needed to back the whole ROM up
To be honest, it's better with root anyway and a lot better when you install a custom rom.... from my experience anyway.

[Q] Rooting, OTA, Recovery

Hi everyone,
I have some questions that will help me understand a lot more regarding rooting, unlocking, custom ROM's etc.
I have read a lot of things in the forums, but despite the trove of information, it's still not always easy to piece together what you need to know in order to understand or feel confident about the process. Sometimes I find answers, but they are a couple of years old and no indication they are still currently valid, etc.
- Is there any danger to sticking with the Stock Recovery as opposed to using ClockworkMod or TWRP if I am only going to be rooting, unlocking and using official Android OTA releases? If I remain with Stock Recovery, do I lose any rooting related features, or the ability to perform certain functions using NRT later?
- I want to confirm, if I keep the Stock Recovery and then I use NRT to root, unlock and flash an official stock Android release, should I then be able to get official OTA updates without having to wipe the device as I would with a Custom Recovery? I believe I would just need to unroot before the OTA, then reroot immediately after, correct?
I did read a thread that talked about how to restore stock recovery without losing data... but I'm using NRT and want to stick with that, which I don't think offers that option. I just want to keep it as simple as possible since I'm new to this. I'm afraid that if I mix methods, it will cause issues.
- If I decide to try an alternate ROM such as CyanogenMod, is that when using a Custom Recovery will become absolutely essential?
Under this scenario, would updates to CyanogenMod (or the other popular ROM's) require wiping the device data?
Thanks to anyone who can confirm if I'm understanding this all correctly.

I'll try to answer as many of these as I can.
1. There is no danger in sticking with the stock recovery, but you do lose some features - most notably stuff like backup/restore, and a whole bunch of advanced features that are either not present in, or are hard to get to in the stock recovery. I'd suggest TWRP - works great with mine, even though I use CWM for all my other devices.
2. In theory yes, not sure about this though.
3. Just get TWRP makes life easier.
4. It's still not essential, but VERY useful unless you want to push every zip through ADB instead of just hitting the "install zip" button. As for the updates - if it shows up in the update section it won't wipe your data, if you have to flash through a recovery it MIGHT, but not 100% sure.
There you are - feel free to correct me on any of this
Sorry for asking this in others thread but I just want to know something..
I am currently on aicp which is 4.3.1..if I want to update to kitkat..what method can preserve the data on my sdcard?
Well, I did have TWRP installed, running stock 4.4 and rooted and unlocked... then the 4.4 build got a minor OTA update.. and guess what?
Can't install it without losing all my data, because TWRP is installed. At least, that's what I read.
So, I decided TWRP had to go.
I can't keep wiping the device every time I do an OTA, so that's really the main thing I want to avoid.

You can install the ota with twrp.
You can also replace twrp with stock recovery without wiping the device.
The only process that wipes the device is unlocking the bootloader,. If you leave it unlocked you can switch around as much as you like

AT&T OTA update; stops at Samsung splash screen

I have been reading through many threads last night and today trying to figure out the best way to get rooted stock back on my AT&T S3 i747. I had hoped to figure it out myself, but have come to the realization that I need a little guidance.
In light of that, I'll try to give concise information. First of all, I am simply looking to end up with stock.
Series of events:
*Have had stock since given this phone in August; it was kept up to date with OTA and it was current (4.4.2) as of yesterday morning when att pushed the newest update to the phone.
*I rooted the phone in September using CF root and Supersu to both root and block Knox and it had been working very well until the attempted update yesterday.
*I no longer have a custom recovery backup
*yesterday my phone went through the update (download and install), but when it rebooted, it only made it through the Samsung splash screen and then went black.
*I am able to boot up both stock recovery and into download mode
*Using the stock recovery to reset the phone has not fixed the problem
Having never used Odin or installed a custom ROM, I am hesitant to flash anything to the phone until I verify that the new bootloader (that is now possibly there due to the OTA update) and anything I try to install won't conflict and make my problem worse.
It seems to me that I should use Odin to load a custom recovery, make a backup, and then flash a ROM. If that is correct, would the recovery ROM found in this thread be the correct one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/ucufne4-to-ucufnj1-update-t2941792
If it is not the correct ROM, what would be the correct one?
Thank you,
M
For a custom recovery, flash the most recent tar.md5 file from here using Odin: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
Boot into recovery, create a backup, and flash a custom ROM. I recommend the most recent CM10.2 so you can determine the bootloader currently installed on your phone. Once you determine the bootloader, you can decide how you want to proceed.
Thank you so much for your response.
I did as you suggested and I do indeed have the UCUFNJ1 bootloader. That does help me determine which direction I can take. Although, now having tried out a non-Samsung ROM, I may have changed my mind about keeping stock on the phone. If I decide to go back to stock, I'll just keep my eyes open for a stock ROM that states it requires that bootloader, correct?
Again, thank you so much for your help!

Flashing stock recovery back

Hi, I have a friends HTC One M8 who rooted it and added TWRP recovery and is S-on.
The phone is on the original HTC software version 4.19.61.2 and I have found the stock recovery for this. the phone has never had any other roms installed.
He wants to get the OTA updates and just need to know if it is ok to flash the stock recovery back without any problems.
After flashing the recovery if this is ok, is there anything else we would have to do to get the OTA upates.
Thanks in advance
ugg...
Root causes problems even after the unroot option inside the app.
So he needs a full non rooted stock backup + stock recovery. or a ruu if it's a available to get the phone back to full factory stock
Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
He is on EE, software version 4.19.61.2
Do you have any links for a stock Backup or RUU
Many Thanks
ugg..
Check the general section, there is a dedicated stickied backup thread. And there is one here in the Q&A "how to get back to stock with TWRP backups"
Thank you

[Q&A] Flashing stock ROM using TWRP

does TWRP able to flash a stock rom?
if it possible, will it cause any problem?
my device is rooted and using stock rom (planning to flash CM)
a) if you have twrp installed, then just backup before flashing any other roms, then factory reset and restore to go back to factory if needed.
b) you can flash OTA with twrp, and I ma pretty sure full stock roms too. See this guide. There is a thread on xda too, but I don't have it bookmarked.
I hope that answers your question.
P.S.
Remember that you have to unlock bootloader for TWRP, and if you want to use OTA function on stock rom with TWRP you need to fully unroot first.
@DiGecko
Thank you very much
