Hi. I haven't brought the phone yet but was wondering if the camera shutter sound can be turn off? Before, I had to root my device to completely turn off the camera sound. For the S6, is there an option for absolutely no sound when taking a picture?

would need root however there are always apps that accomplish this feat.
But to answer your question. Certain states have laws which require audible cameras. manufacturers typically build it in to avoid legal drama.

Samsung usually has that option in some versions of the software, however it typically is hidden on retail US releases. On my last two Samsung phones, there was no option there unless you were rooted and made an edit to the /system/csc/feature.xml file. I haven't poked around for CSC settings on the S6 yet.
If you have your phone on silent then it is silent but I haven't found a setting to turn it off yet by itself.

Just checked and it is in the CSC feature.xml to enable the shutter sound setting. Fairly certain it should work as it has in past devices. But im not rooted yet so cant say for sure.

/system/csc/ is here but no feature.xml

ok thanks I think the file I have to edit to change the Shutter Sound is in the customer.xml in the RWC carrier subfolder as im with rogers.

IIRC, sometimes there's a carrier subfolder that has the feature.xml file instead.
Eforced_stream_silencer.apk should do the trick. It comes from google I think as well.
I turned it off by renaming the shutter.ogg sound in system/media/ui to shutter. Ogg. Bak

Confirmed this works on my Sprint Galaxy S6 SM-920P
I know this is an old thread but there are 3 or more shutter.ogg files. Renaming/deleting files will prevent the shutter sound on 1x zoom. Go higher and even at max 8 times zoom the shutter sound goes off. I have no idea where the directories are. This is frankly quite stupid.
I have docomo S6 edge upgraded to nougat.

Any chance this can happen? My old Droid Incredible could do this stock or rooted. It really comes in handy when you're trying to take pics discretely in public.
You can turn your media sounds to quiet. That's the only workaround setting at the moment. But yeah +1 to this mod/app/whatever.
if there is no app and you're rooted just move /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg to another folder when you want it silent.
i used to just delete it in my themes for the desire.
Or with tasker set it to mute volume when in the camera app, easiest automated workaround

I just turn the phone main volume down. On the side of the phone. Works for me.

If your phone is rooted, you can replace the audio file.
The original file can be foun in: system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg
adb root
adb remount
adb shell
mv system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg.bak
I just delete the camera_click.ogg file, been doing it that way for quite awhile. Quick and easy. Only issue is that I have to repeat this when I install new ROM.
I may be missing something obvious here, but is there a way to disable the "tap to focus" sound as well? I had no trouble disabling the "click" ogg, but none of the other files in the directory seem to be the one that the camera makes when focusing.

I have Galaxy Nexus. Not rooted. Therefore volume down does not kill the 'click' of the shutter and the file ...ogg cannot be deleted. In simple words, seems no solution to silent camera's click.
This is done to comply with US laws relating to privacy, and imposed by Samsung (or Google) worldwide... Whether we like it or not (I don't like it, btw) - is not a matter to debate in this technical forum

yeah, i thought it was fairly obvious...
rename/move camera_focus.ogg which is in the same location as camera_click.ogg
Deleting them works fine. I have deleted almost all of the sounds in the media folder.
The GNex's camera isn't that great for upskirt pics anyway.

There is a 'phone mods' section in my ToolKit to rename the camera/camcorder sounds. Stock Rom users are covered as the ToolKit can boot an insecure boot image to your phone to give it temporary root access and allow the files to be renamed.

That only works in 4.0.3 Roms. In earlier builds renaming or deleting the file doesnt mute the focus sound although the other sounds can still be muted.

Probably because it set the sounds internally within the app itself and doesnt use the external system sounds. That way they can be enabled/disabled from within the app without needing root to rename the existing files

Hi guys,
Might be a silly questions - but I can't find the option to shut the camera up, for it not to make that annoying shutter sound. Do you have any idea how to disable it?
Thanks.

Yes. This isn't a flashable zip by the way. It contains a file that you replace the original with... The file is default_gain.conf (found in system/etc)
Backup the original first.
Or do what TML1504 suggested. That's what I usually do.

Or, to make it the cleanest possible:
Under /system/csc, there is a feature.xml file.
Edit it, and under the <!-- Camera --> section, add the following line:
Code:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
And you will have an option in the Camera settings to disable the shutter sound.

Same here, awesome!
Unbelievable! My hubby's 6 year old feature phone has a camera that you can't turn off the stupid sound.
I am stunned that on the Note 2, you must first mute your phone, then open the camera app, then hope your subject is still standing there waiting for the shot. Or I have the option of rooting my phone.
I don't know why, but this just pisses me off! :silly:
I tried to disable the camera shutter sound but its not working.
Steps:
- Rooted the device with Odin
- Edited the other.xml <CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
The option is now available in the camera menu but always jumps back to "on"
Any ideas? Thanks :good:

Switch to a custom ROM that makes this simple. That's one sollution.
You can also find that sound file (the CLICK noise is just a sound file like any other sound file) and replace it with a blank sound. I wouldn't delete it outright because it may cause a force close if the camera tries to access the sound file and it's not there.

Do the gestures still work on a custom rom? Can you recommend me a good rom?

Gestures should work on all TouchWiz roms. They will NOT work on any AOSP ROM.
We do not recomend any ROMs on XDA. It's a big no no here. (Because any such discussion inevitably degrades into a fight over what rom is best, and there is no correct answer to that)
But if you like your rom and just want a little more control stick with TouchWiz (it has a slightly better camera than AOSP roms as the software to control the camera is better, but closed source so it can't be ported to AOSP roms). You'll find that custom TouchWiz variants are very similar to what you have now, but with A LOT more control over the UI.
Just delete the files. Obviously you're rooted so that's easy. Look at ALL the sound files in system/media/ui.
The whole build.prop edit thing is mostly a gimik for a lot of things - as you should already be able to tell from this experience. It's a pointless argument, some people will argue on their death bed that build.prop edits aren't a placebo effect for most things.
Anyway, don't do the .bak rename either. What's the point? You plan on using the click sound again? Wasted space honestly. Delete them, enjoy.

I did, yes. my phone was silenced at the time and I figured maybe its supposed to be on loud when its done so I tried that too. Tried unchecking it as well but nothing. and Im on stock as well
I was getting tired of hearing the camera shutter sound when taking photos, so I dug around the file system and found two audio files that are the shutter sound. I renamed these, rebooted, and everything is working great. Let me know if this does or doesn't work for you!
Before you get started, you need to be rooted for this method.
Step 1:
Use a root-capable file browser of your choice (I prefer SolidExplorer) and navigate to /system/media/audio/ui
Step 2:
Locate cam_snap_0.ogg and camera.click.ogg and rename the file extensions to .OLD, as seen below.
Step 3:
Reboot, then test
Alternatively, (non-root) you can set your phone to vibrate or silent mode and it wont make the shutter sound.

Not all of us keep our phone on silent all the time, and most of us don't want to think about turning the volume down every time we take a picture. If we never care to have the shutter sound, why not just disable it completely?

It onyl changes the name. It does not affect the contents of the file in anyway. It will fail a HASH check though so revert it back in order to do an update to another OS if you are stock.

I understand. But xposed has such a negligible impact on battery as I doesn't matter. And the tweaksbox is as simple as it gets; one button disables the sound and can turn it back on.
