I know there are several threads about this already, but I could not find any solution in them. Here's what I've done, or at least as much as I can remember right now. All of these tests were done after wiping data/system/cache/dalvik/nose/cat/etc
Started off with LiquidSmooth LS-KK-v3.2-2014-10-27-d2lte. Just selecting the front camera would crash the phone and reboot.
Flashed different kernels. Ones I can remember are BMS_34_d2_20150203 (tried some older versions too) and lk_s3aosp_kitkat-v9.19, though I know I tried a couple others. I think BMS was the best one for it, I could select the front camera without a crash, but it would still crash if I tried to actually take a picture. However, this combo worked fine in 3rd party apps like Snapchat, front camera was usable and undistorted.
Then I tried different roms, such as:
Cyanogenmod, (maybe still latest, don't remember version)
Quantum 5.2
CARBON-KK-UNOFFICIAL-20141001-1825-d2lte
Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.9.0-OFFICIAL-8262
Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.0-OFFICIAL-5979
I tried stock, Lean and BMS kernel on most of those roms as well, with varying degrees or results. Pretty much all of those work fine for the front camera in the regular camera app, though with some issues. Right now I've got Slim build 9 and LeanKernel 9.19, which works for both cameras, but if I use the front camera and then switch to the back camera it will lock up. However, none of these work with 3rd party apps like Snapchat, the front camera is stretched.
So basically there was LiquidSmooth, which worked great overall and was just fine in 3rd party apps, but couldn't use the front camera in the regular camera app, or other roms that fix the regular camera app and break 3rd party ones. I prefer LiquidSmooth and would love to just have the regular camera app working properly there, but I'll take whatever gives me a functional phone with both cameras working in all apps. I've seen various "fixes", such as renaming the vendor camera .so file in /system/hw/ (not actual location, but I forgot and it was something like that), or flashing the google_camera_compatibility fix, or various "fixed" camera or gallery apks. I've been using CWM v6.0.4.5 on all of this, though I've heard mention of Philz recovery and wonder if that would make any difference.
Is there an actual fix for this? I've seen people say it works for them, seen people say they've fixed it and seen people say there is no fix yet.

I made a thread before concerning my camera when I thought my camera just completely crapped out for no apparent reason, but after installing a few 3rd party camera apps, I found that MY camera ISN'T as dead as I thought. This is where things just get weird: the stock camera app constantly force closes when I open it. I tried reinstalling, a battery pull , clearing the gallery data, everything logical, but to no avail.
Now, when I use the camera up lg camera, the rear camera works like a dream, but it doesnt recognize my front facing shooter. Ita the same thing qith the paper camera app. Ive had this issue aince 4.0.4 to 4.1 to 4.1.1 & now Im running a 4.2 rom.
At first i swore it was a hardware problem, but now i have no clue WTF it actually is... Please help! Im fed up!
By chance, you haven't frozen or removed the stock gallery apk have you? I believe those two (camera and gallery) are married to one another and need to both be installed to work correctly.
I've tried almost every camera app. The two best ones I've tried are the plain Google camera and this one called camera awesome, it's really good too here is the link

Anyone else have any suggestions for a camera app you like?
Stock TW cameras is one of the better cameras Ive ever used. Google camera, essentially AOSP camera produces crap quality compared to stock when viewed on anything bigger than a phone
My experience with Google Camera has been all positive.
Not to say others have not had bad experiences with GC.
Yes the stock Camera is very good as well. Sometimes, I do get better pics with the other cameras depending on the situation.
Especially speed-wise, the GC is great for me.
To each his own, which is why I try them before I give an opinion.

I've used GC several times since it's come out. Iv had various issues. Last time I tried I would take a pic, swipe over to see it, wouldn't be there. Yet when I open gallery there it is. Odd. On top of the quality issues I gave up on it. Just never worked right for me.

Anyone else have an issue with GC and the front camera. First time i use gc after installing it works correctly. If I close gc with the front camera in use then when opening gc from that point forward the icon to swap cameras always shows the front camera is engaged but the rear camera is engaged. To switch to the front camera i have to press the camera switch button twice to get the front camera to start.
I've been using this Lenovo Super Camera and Gallery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665714
Quick to pull up and take pics and has lots of options to mess with.
I searched and couldn't find mind help with this. I also searched the cyanogenmod bug system. It has been mentioned in the bug system but it was basically brushed off.
Anyhow, in the stock camera app the front facing camera is fine. But in some third party apps, for example: snapchat, it's distorted. Only with the front facing camera. (took a picture of a coin which is a perfect circle and it comes out as an oval.)
This is on the most current cm11 snapshot and was also in the previous snapshot. Any known fixes would be greatly appreciated.
Really? No one has a clue about this???
I installed the latest snapshot awhile ago and recently i noticed that HDR was taking really dark pics no matter what in the stock app, and then I noticed that the front facing camera doesn't work in 3rd party apps, and hdr doesnt work at all in 3rd party apps. They either take blank pics or crash the app I've been searching for days and i cant find a single fix nothing. I'm sorry i can't be of help, just wanted to let you know I've been looking and can't find anything
I have the exact problem OP is describing for a while now. I would love if someone had an answer.
I used a version of CM12 Snap Camera which essentially looks like stock Google camera but with quite a bit more features like storage location, OIS etc. Does anyone know of a location to download a version for CM13 because I can't seem to find it. I have tried installing the CM12 compatible version as a system app, and installing Cyanogen Camera app but both force close immediately. Just want a camera with a bit more options.
Found it and posted in Themes & Apps
Hey guys,
I got this tab for 2 days now. I don't want to root it since it's not necessary for my use cases. The last versions of arnova and co should be working fine without root. I've tested about 10 modded versions and found out that the latest ones are working fine, some only FC, some others with only video working and others with also working picture and portrait mode, I think arnovas 7.99 or 8 were fine, I'm not sure which versions exactly. But there is another problem with them. You can take pictures with the volume button but there are no elements at the bottom (4 circles for switching front cam, take picture, take video, gallery). Is it a resolution problem ? I mean, I don't think that this cam was made for 3:4 or is compatible with such resolutions... Anybody has tried to get gcammod for our tab? And also got it working with all ui Elements?
i was wondering where the capture button was too
