Is there a way through Themes or elsewhere to reduce the wasted padding space the at exists around apps and widget icons on the home screen? It seems like they could have fit an entirely additional row in there if the padding would be reduced to something more reasonable.
Easiest way would be to use another launcher. On the other hand, you could decompile the sense launcher and give it a go.

has anyone looked into this? why does android only allow icons to be placed in grids? why not allow free positioning?
burp......
Does it really matter honestly?

you can get adw launcher, and change the settings so each screen is 8x8 instead of 4x4.
But 4x4 or 5x5 is about optimal, because the icons are a standard size any more than this and icons will begin to overlap and it is difficult to touch a specific icon and not accidentally click the wrong one (which is why I think they made it 4x4, to avoid clutter, easier to keep track of coordinates, etc)
guys, how to change icons in GN?
i tried with desktop visualizer and it worked somewhat but not perfectly. Dock icons are smaller than normal. I can only choose Desktop Visualizer ShortCut for dock. Bigger icons cant be put in dock. Using shortcut with custom icons make the icons pretty small than the normal icons.
But in the screenshot thread i have seen people using custom icons which are bigger.
So, is there anything wrong that i am doing here? is there any other way to make a shortcut and change the icon?
cheers
I suggest you use another Launcher rather than the stock one, Try GO LauncherEX or ADW LauncherEX. These launchers will allow you to customize much more.

I've had the same problems with custom icons turning out small. right now I am running a launcher but seems overkill to run a whole launcher just to change a couple icons.
I miss the lack of possibilities for sorting/arranging the size, numbers and sorting of the icons on the homescreen of JB 4.1.1
Of course the beautifully layouted homescreen looks nice, but there is a lot of unused space, not enough space for all icons and no possibilities for sorting the icons. In fact on the newer larger screen, there is till the same amount of icons as with the older smaller screens.
I would like:
- to sort the apps on the menu and homescreen, p.ex. alphabeticaly and not having to wade constantly thru the screens to search thru the topsy turvy order.
- to add comfortably more icons than allowed by the standard 4x4-structure.
There is the Multicon-app, but its not working anymore on 4.1.x
- to clear the bottom line with the four standard shortcuts (that is 3 and the
Menu) and to use this space as well for icons, shortcuts and widgets.
Any ideas on how to achieve this?
Nova Launcher!
For those of you guys with CyanogenMod 11, I'm having a little issue with the settings pulldown menu. The icons are cut off when the phone is on landscape mode... Here's a screenshot. I know it's a very minor issue but it seems to bother me quite a bit, any fix for this?

set your launcher to NOT DISPLAY ICON TEXT. You KNOW what the functions you set up by looking at the icons, so you won't need the text, right? That will give you more display area without cutting off the icons. Also, you might use smaller icons and closer together (all configurable in your launcher's software.)

I'm using Nova Launcher and there are no settings that change anything from the pulldown menu.
My previous phone is a Sony Z5 compact with a lower resolution and smaller screen. On my home screen and other panels I can get 5 rows of 4 icons (not including the app bar along the bottom) i.e. 20 icons + the shortcuts along the bottom.
However, on my HTC 10 I cannot find a way of increasing the number of icons - I can only get 4 x 4 and they are really widely spaced out.
I am missing something really obvious? I tried using a smaller font size - but that does not help.
I know I can increase grid size on the apps pages - but that does not affect the home screen etc
I know there is a FreeStyle theme but that looks too wacky for me...
Any help welcome. Thanks.
You can't on stock.Different launcher or custom rom.
ok - thanks.
Will check out alternative launchers....
Tried Google Now Launcher which seemed to be good enough - but you can set the Home Page panel position - I like one panel on each side.
Tried Nova Launcher and that does it.
Thanks.
