Hi guys,
I have a HTC One M8, CID HTC__002 and I am trying to remove the demo content. The device was previously a retail unit, and so the demo content came pre-installed. I downloaded the RUU found in this thread here and successfully flashed the .exe version of it, however on rebooting despite the phone being factory data reset, the Demo video still plays!
A few months ago I successfully converted one of our other display M8 models to a Google Play Edition, however this was a very lengthy process, and I had to pay to get S-Off. Though I have no issue paying for S-Off, I don't really want to be paying the fee twice, and so I don't want to go down the route of converting this to a Google Play Edition. Converting to Google Play, did however, successfully remove the demo content.
I want the phone to be 100% stock on Sense, with no demo content what-so-ever. Please can somebody point me in the right direction?
Thanks, Mike!
Once S-OFF, always S-OFF. I change from GPe to Sense weekly and it's never been an issue

Hi Eddy,
Good to see you on the HTC section still, you helped me a few times back when I first joined! In regards to S-Off, I'm talking about two different handsets here. To date I have had two demo units of the HTC One M8. I paid for S-Off on one, but I don't really want to pay S-Off for two. Can you use the S-Off tool more than once if you have paid for it?
Ah right, sorry mis-read that bit. Unfortunately you'll need to pay for each device - I don't think Sunshine offer a bulk order as yet

Damn, do you know of any other way I could remove the demo content?
Have you try remove demo.apk in system/etc then do factory reset ?

How would I do this, what is the process?
Root the phone and then use a root file manager to remove it. TBH, I'd just stump up the money for Sunshine, run the 4.16.401.10 RUU and be done with it!
If there is an RUU available, and it otherwise fits the criteria (new or same version), then it should have completely cleaned the phone out completely. That is what RUUs do.
However, the $25 for S-off is easily worth it. All of the crap people put up with to do anything on their phone disappears. You can upgrade/downgrade firmware at will. You can alter your CID/MID all day. You can lock/unlock your bootloader without triggering a factory reset. Tired of lollipop? Downgrade completely (firmware and all) to KitKat. It's almost like having a Nexus device.
Hi Jay
I get demo devices through my employer, every single HTC ROM out there inclues demoflow, the device it's self is essentialy a generic unit with an alternate CID, the demo installation and launch is triggered by CID HTC_002, the most effective way to get rid of demoflo and make the device 100% generic, is to S-Off and supercid! (11111111)
Once you are supercid you can flash any ruu and you will still have a 100% generic device, OTA updates and all... Demo won't even install.
The alternative method would be to simply remove /system/etc/.demoflo and /system/priv-app/DemoFlowInstaller
This will break ota and carrying the 002 cid will bring demoflo back when you flash any HTC ruu.
My M9 came as a demo unit, I modified the supersu installer to do the work for me as S-off isn't yet available... Htc dev unlock - twrp & flash the modified supersu zip.. once again breaking ota but I have an ruu on standby..
Feel free to shout if you need assistance.
Thanks

Hi Lee,
Sorry it's taken me a few days to thank you for this post - but thank you! I have an M9 that is stuffed with demo content on the _002 CID. Could you help me in removing this software? I would really appreciate it.

Check your firmware against your installed rom version - happens when firmware needs update
Htc
Forgot to mention that it wouldnt turn on since it came out the box.
Kernel - 3.4.0 elemental
Baseband - 1.19.21331147a1
Build numb - 3.28.401.9
Htc
Hboot - 3.18.0.0000
Radio- 1.19.21331147a1
Os - doesn't mention anything at all

Yeah, that baseband is wrong against that 3.28.401.9, update firmware, should be 1.22.223.....
So which firmware you suggest, any link to download a zip to flash?
What about the os that is empty?

OS is blank because you got custom recovery, probably TWRP - flash firmware from within fastboot -- http://xda7.androidrevolution.org/db_mirror/Firmware/HTC/HTC_One_M8/401/3.28.401.9.zip

I would really recommend you S-Off your device, if you want to flash firmware
otherwise:
1- flash signed firmware incrementally, signed firmware expects previous updates to already be there, so if you skip directly to the last, you'll end up stuck with a high version firmware, but missing previous updates!!!!!!
2- you need to relock your bootloader, for fastboot oem rebootRUU mode flashes to work
Thanks for the response.
i tryed to s-off with firewater but i think this service has stopped?or does it still work as a method?
Device is s-on with unlocked bootloader. I read that with s-on u cant flash kernels-radios-baseband. Is radio equal to baseband? a guy in earlier post said that to get my wifi working i have to update the firmware. Exactly he said that baseband is wrong against that 3.28.401.9, update firmware, should be 1.22.223.
So how do i get that firmware + how i flash it + in what state should the device be?
thats what im asking

hi, just a quick FYI, you need to quote (ie reply) or mention (for example @ nkk71 <- without the space) someone, for them to get notified ... otherwise it may go unnoticed.
anyway,
1- firewater is discontinued and in either case was not very suited for the M8 anyway, except for some of the very early models it would have failed. sunshine ($25) is the only known software solution for s-off
2- the response earlier about what you see in Settings->About (3.28.401.9) only refers to the version the ROM (not firmware) is based on
3- the firmware you get from a "fastboot getvar all" from version-main; if that's missing (a bug in some twrp versions), you can make an educated guess by looking at hboot version + radio + date in bootloader
4- radio is equal to baseband, but not equal to firmware.... firmware contains a lot more than just hboot and radio
5- with s-on, you can only flash signed firmwares (these are usually extracted from OTA.zips), and have to match your MID and CID... you also need to have bootloader relocked for RUU mode flash to work
^^ plus, since those are updates, they will only contain whatever was changed from the previous OTA update, that's why if you intend on staying s-on, you should flash those incrementally, and not skip a version
(for example, the "latest" signed firmware could just be an update to hboot or something, but missing all the previous radio, touchscreen, etc updates.... because and official update [by definition] implies all the previous updates were already installed)
hope that helps a bit

your hboot+baseband version would indicate you are either on 2.22.401.4 or .5 (minor difference)
you should flash in increasing order:
3.28.401.6.zip
3.28.401.7.zip
3.28.401.9.zip
from here: http://xda7.androidrevolution.org/db_mirror/Firmware/index.php?dir=HTC/HTC_One_M8/401/
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip 3.28.401.6.zip
fastboot flash zip 3.28.401.6.zip <- yes twice, make sure it says successful/finished
fastboot reboot-bootloader
once you are back in bootloader, make sure the OS- line has been updated to the version you flashed, and is not in red (if it is in red, that means the flash didnt complete properly)
then repeat the above commands for the 2 other firmwares
Note: the higher the firmware, the less chances of getting S-OFF, just to let you know
Hi,
Well, as the title said i'm stuck in bootloop after re-locking the bootloader.
Here is the history of what happened:
Unlocked the bootloader
flashed TWERP recovery and rooted.
I saw I can't install OTA updates so I unrooted the phone and flashed back to stock recovery. Still couldn't install OTA updates.
Unlocked the bootloader again and restored system partition back to original "untouched" status (from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-one-m9/general/please-read-rooting-using-twrp-t3069022). Only to realize i'm not on t-mobile, but the phone worked anyway .
Flashed back to stock recovery but still couldn't install the updates (If I remember correctly I got a massage that my software was tampered).
I'm S-on so I thought before trying the sunshine app I'll relock the bootloader. So I did that and that's it.
Here's were I'm now:
software status: modified
RELOCKED
S-ON
I can access stock recovery and download mode.
ADB devices doesn't recognize the phone (all drivers are ok and up to date and I've tried different cables and usb ports)
On the other hand, fasboot devices does work and recognize my phone.
So I come to you with help after going though tons of pages, guides and what not. I'm at it for a week now and no luck.
Help me XDA-Kanobi, you're my only hope
Thanks

What's your current firmware? Is the allow OEM unlock option (or how ever it was called in English) activated in the developer options (only important for firmware versions with a 2 or higher at the beginning)? If yes you can re-unlock with the unlock_token you got from HTCdev.

My current firmware is 5.0.something. To be honest I don't remember and can't check.
I've tired to re-unlock with the unlock_token you got from HTCdev but it didn't work. I've got the token with fastboot but only in download mode an then when I tried to unlock with the file they send you to the mail It gives an error that I can check later when I'm home.

It seems like you're talking about the android version not the firmware version since there is no 5.0.XXX.X firmware for the M9. For now it might be the best solution to wait until you're home.

Yes, that's correct. And with that firmware your problems can be solved without much hassle. Just download either the 1.32.401.15 or the 1.40.401.8 RUU which are both linked in my google sheet (link can be found in my signature). Follow the instructions and your phone should be usable again in no time. If you choose the 1.40.401.8 RUU there's one OTA less you need to install after you recovered your phone.
And a little advice for the future: If you want to install future OTAs then you don't need to relock your bootloader. If your phone isn't completely stock this will always result in a bootloop.

And a little advice for the future: If you want to install future OTAs then you don't need to relock your bootloader. If your phone isn't completely stock this will always result in a bootloop.

Thanks a lot for the answer. Is it possible to flash the RUU if I'm S-ON??

Of course. The only things you cannot do is downgrading or flashing RUUs that have a different SKU (=the three numbers behind the second dot in the firmware version). RUUs with the same version as your phone or higher versions are fine, though.

HI

For your own safety you should delete your IMEI as it can be used for phone scam by others.
Why are you trying to flash one of Sneakyghosts' firmware packs? They can only be used with S-OFF and do not contain a rom. I've already explained earlier that you can find the needed RUUs and instructions in the google sheet in my signature.

Hi thanks for the top about the IMEI I've changed it.
and sorry, I didn't understood the the original comment and got in to the a wrong line in the comment. I'll try again with the correct file (2gb will take some to download). Again, thank you for your answer and patient. It's nice to see people try to help. :good:
THANK YOU so much! everything is working and even updated! thanks!
it seems i have a strange issue after all.
my phone doesn't detect my htc headphones. It recognize other headphone and the HTC headphones works with other devices.
it looks like a software issue.

Op is asking if ota still work with that rom.
yes it is a questiopn, cause my is my system based on non signet RUU firmware. i donmt have a clean RUU and dont get OTA updates. it works very bad and slow + i dont understand really how i can install TWRP on the m9. i found a few options but i need a RUU/OTA to create a bootable 0PJAIMG.zip right ? found something like that in here XDA
"You can make your own zip version. You just need an android-info.txt file from an RUU (or firmware.zip from OTA). Zip it up with the TWRP image (renamed to recovery.img) and place on the root of your FAT32-formatted SD card in download mode."
so all what i m looking for is a fresh clean install, recieve OTA updates and a little stability, thats why i ask. do u know why i dont get OTA updates ? maybe i did a mistake...
thx

yes, works all good. my problem is still to create a working 0PJAIMG.zip with TWRP without brick the phone. it s not my phone, i flash it for a friend and he want to use viper venom.
is it possible to flash it without TWRP on the phone ? maybe with ADB or something. think get the stock OTA files is not really important for him too..
thnx guys, many hrs no sleep brain burns ^^

if you install TWRP and root your phone at all you will not get OTA updates
if you want OTA you cannot install custom recovery and root.
The only way to get OTA is by having untouched system partition and Stock recovery
The links below in my Signature contain all the files and links you need to...
1.convert and update your phone to DevEd Android 6
2.Install TWRP and SuperSU 2.64
3.and the files needed to return to stock later if another OTA is released
Thanks for this! =D just what i needed!!!

its just AT&T or all can flash it?
Hello there!
I have now searched and searched and come upon many great threads in this massive forum however i have yet to find a solution to my current problem. Every time i have went here i have always managed to find something to help me fix my phones over the years but this this time I've hit a wall it seems.
What happened was that my phone started to crash the google apps like gallery etc. No big deal at first but then i decided to do a factory reset thinking that might fix the problem but then my phone just starts up to the HTC logo and throws several different error messages that Google.xxx.xxx could not start/has crashed. IF i click these away they appear after a while again and the phone will be stuck like that.
I can start the phone in fastboot mode to be able to use ADB etc..
The phone is currently bootloader unlocked and with S-on
Now this is what i have done:
First of all the phone wasn't in debugging mode when it crashed so I'm guessing its still not which might complicate the matter further.
* Using a TWRP.img file i managed to get the phone in to the TWRP mode on the phone. (Fastboot boot TWRPfilename.img)
I do not have any TWRP files on my phone nor any apps this was all from the files on the PC. I just mention this because thats the only sign of life the phone has given me so far.
*I tried to go in from the adb shell and enabling it using the following code:
Adb shell
echo "persist.service.adb.enable=1" >>/system/build.prop
echo "persist.service.debuggable=1" >>/system/build.prop
echo "persist.sys.usb.config=mass_storage,adb" >>/system/build.prop"
reboot
I have no idea as to if it worked or not but the phone rebooted again.
* Tried to reflash with the right RUU for my phone with the right CID thanks to guides on this forum -- i get error 159 (this is because the CID is wrong from what ive read in other threads)
* Tried changing the CID to 11111111 but that did not work i got another error doing that:

* Tried flashing from a .zip file with the fastboot commands.
ALL of these things I have tried with the bootloader locked and unlocked. (if this is any important info)
The phone ran the 6.12.401.4 version at the moment of the crash and that's what shows in the RUUs ive tried as well. Also the phone is not rooted.
Now is there a way to completely flush the phone out of any info and just reinstalling it like you can do with windows on a PC for example since whatever i try is met by an error message or a failed flash etc..?

I thank you sooooo much from the bottom of my heart I was sure my phone was unsaveable for a moment.
what was the difference with that RUU and the ones I've tried before? I must have tried like 4 different ones in the end out of desperation.
or was it the fastboot that was the trick?
I'm just curious on how you could spot the problem so that i can learn more about how it works.
Thanks again! Truly great work!

We can't say if the RUUs you tried were correct or not, as you didn't give any specific on those (file names, where you found them, etc.).
But you do need the htc_fastboot to run the RUU.zip with fastboot command, the "generic" fastboot.exe does not work.
And you absolutely need to have a LOCKED or RELOCKED bootloader to RUU with s-on (this requirement is bypassed with s-off). So you were also compounding one wrong thing with another (when trying to flash RUU with bootloader UNLOCKED) making it even less likely you would have the successful combination of variables.
Unlocked bootloader is okay to OTA, so that is where I think some folks get confused on when to have the bootloader locked or not. But OTA and RUU are two very different things (with different requirement), and its important to remember that fact.

I think this is where all else failed since all the ones i tried had either the ADB or a file called only Fastboot.exe not this one that said HTC_fastboot.exe

That still doesn't tell me much about what RUUs you tried. What are the actual file names, version numbers, etc.?
Only if you are still curious why the RUUs didn't work, of course. I understand its somewhat of a moot (or purely academic) point, now that the phone is working.

Somewhat as I figured. All those RUUs failed for good reason.
First and second ones: These RUUs are older (lower version number) than the main version that was on the phone (6.12.401.4), otherwise known as a "downgrade" in version. With s-on, that isn't allowed. You can only flash the same or higher version (later) RUUs; and the only way to bypass that requirement is with s-off.
Third RUU: As you know, this isn't for your phone. You can run it a million times, and it will still fail every time; as its intended to fail since the CID and MID on your device doesn't match what the RUU is looking for. The only way to run this RUU is to s-off and change your phone's CID and MID.
Forth RUU: Again, not for your phone. Plus, the Sprint version, which has partition differences from your M8 version (and most other M8 versions). You absolutely should stay away from any Sprint or Verizon firmware, as if they do manage to flash, will often lead to a radio brick on your device.
This would never flash anyway with s-on, and the safeguards of the CID and MID did their job and saved you, in this case.
So in short, you can only run RUUs that have the "401" in the spot x.xx.401.x as these are for your CID and MID. And you can only run versions equal or greater than 6.12.401.4, of which there is currently the only one (the one that worked - 6.12.401.4).
Hope that clears things up a bit for you.

Yes indeed this cleared up most of my suspicions as well as i said i knew the 3rd and 4th was wrong from the get go it was more of a test..
Thank you for all this good info i feel like im starting to get a good grip on whats good and whats working etc... I really appreciate it! Thumbs up indeed.
I have another question tho.... Why would it not let me change the CID to the supercid 11111111?
IS that due to the phone not being in debug mode or the S-on option perhaps since i know that is a security feature from the get go.

You can only change the CID (and also MID) with s-off.

Right as I thought then Well thanks again for helping out and clearing up my questions.
I shall now retire from this thread in peace
So, like I found in another threads my old phone, has not sound at all. I tried to fix it years ago, with not luck, but I wanna give it another chance since still it's a great phone.
This is my getvar all
Code:

all: Done!
I tried almost everything, it's currently S-ON, I tried a millon times going S-OFF with HTCDev steps, but nothing. It's UNLOCKED.
If anyone would give me a hand with this, would be awesome.. since my actual phone is broke, like my wallet. :crying:
Thanks! :fingers-crossed:

HTCDev is not a process to get s-off. It is a process to unlock the bootloader (but you say it's already UNLOCKED). Sunshine is the only valid method to s-off. You can try anything else a billion times, and it will never work.
You most likely also do not need s-off to get the phone working properly again.
I have a feeling that no sound is due to outdated firmware, possibly in conjunction with a custom ROM (ROM - firmware mismatch).
My suggestion, try to relock the bootloader (command: fastboot oem lock) then the following RUU:
http://gsm-firmware.com/index.php?a=downloads&b=file&id=14070
The RUU will wipe all personal data on the phone.

Hey thanks for replying!
I tried that, I keep getting this error
Code:
target reported max download size of 1826418688 bytes
sending 'zip' (1734001 KB)...
OKAY [ 49.344s]
writing 'zip'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 112.683s
I tried doing a reboot and reinstaling.. but still getting error 12 :/
Any clue?

"Signature verify fail" usually means the bootloader is unlocked. Did you relock the bootloader as I advised (mandatory in order to install the RUU)? Or if you did, can you verify is says RELOCKED near the top of the bootloader screen?

I believe you need to flash 6.13.631.7 firmware first before you can install the RUU
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60218734&postcount=5
Also you need htc_fastboot to fastboot flash RUU zip

Good point, and makes sense, as most of the US M8 variants require firmware to be flashed for Marshmallow RUU. Even though Rogers is Canadian, that version tends to follow the same rules as the US versions!

Sorry I took long time to reply.
I tried flashing the firmware, using htc_fasboot and fastboot. Both will give me this error.
Code:
c:\adb>htc_fastboot flash zip fw.zip
sending 'zip'... (53849 KB) OKAY
sending time = 2.408 secs
writing 'zip'... (bootloader) adopting the signature contained in this image...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILnot allowed
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
Execution time is 5(s)
And still, won't flash RUU.zip
----
I retried a few more times, and it worked! It flashed firmware and ruu
But now is stuck on HTC logo boot. Won't let install a rom over fastboot :/
Code:
sending 'zip'... (360264 KB) OKAY
sending time = 10.763 secs
writing 'zip'... FAILnot allowed
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
Execution time is 11(s)

Hard to tell exactly what you tried to do here, since you didn't include the actual command, name of the file you tried to flash, etc. Always include as much specific info as possible. "install a rom" is not sufficient info.
You tried flashing a custom ROM over fastboot? If so, that isn't the proper way to flash a custom ROM. You need custom recovery (TWRP) to do that. So that is the reason for "not allowed" (since it isn't).
But before doing so, we should look closer at the RUU (why it isn't booting) first. Since installing TWRP requires unlocking the bootloader, etc. Better to eliminate the RUU as a solution first, so we don't have to keep going back and forth unlocking/relocking bootloader.
Did the RUU finish successfully without any errors? If there were errors, what did it say specifically? If you don't know the answers to those questions, you can run the RUU again. Even cut/paste the output so we can look at it.
