Can't use RUU or Update firmware? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, first of all thank you for reading this thread and if you can help I would appreciate it, it is urgent.
I am in a sticky situation with my Sprint One M8. I wan't to install CM12 or any lollipop Rom for that matter. But when I try to update my firmware or use an RUU to take the sprint OTA, it says "The Rom Update Utility cannot update your Android. Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again." I have tried three different RUU's and the Firmware Update Utility and they all say that. I am in Fastboot USB mode when I run them.
Here is my info:
S-On
Stock Recovery 3.30.651.2
HBOOT - 3.19.0.0000
Radio - 1.08.20.0916
I've tried these RUU's:
Sprint_HTC_One_M8_non-HK_4.20.651.10_RUU
Sprint_HTC_One_M8_non-HK_3.31.651.2_RUU

Is S-Off required? Also I just tried the three latest firmwares with the MicroSD method and it just prompted me to reboot.
Also how to I even tell what firmware/image version I am currently on?
Edit: I will try the RUU MicroSD method now.

Makes sure your supercid as well. Everything you need to know is in the sprint forum

[Q] Can't flash the device to stock rom using RUU

Hi,
I'm trying to restore from custom rom to stock rom.
My phone is CID ORANG216 and I'm using xx.xx.65.xx RUU releases.
I have 2 relevant files:
The RUU exe - RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_S_Orange_CH-Generic_2.17.65.2_Radio_2.1204.135.20_release_275590_signed.exe
OTA UPDATE for the device - OTA_ENDEAVOR_U_JB_45_S_Orange_CH-Generic_3.16.65.2-2.17.65.2_release_296426gf2xgpisn8xs0fti
After flashing the stock recovery, boot_signed.img, rebootRUU, the RUU update fails because of version failure, I suspect that the HBOOT version is the trouble maker.
My phone is unlocked with S-ON with HBOOT 1.36 and the HBOOT in the RUU is 1.12 .
Due to S-ON I cant change the hboot.
I can't seem to find a workaround for it and install the RUU.
Any ideas??
I even thought about compiling the latest JB release from htcdev development center and flash it...

You need to relock the bootloader to use install RUU . It has nothing to do with hboot . Just take note that you have to use the RUU that is on the same build or higher .

doesn't work... I'm getting "Error [140]: BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR"
The only RUU exe available is the one i mentioned and its old
I don't know how to use the OTA file without the original stock rom already installed...
if it helps anything the command "fastboot getvar version-main" on my device gives:
version-main: 3.16.65.2

Like I mentioned . You have to look for the version that's the same with yours or higher to use the RUU . I guess you can't go back to stock until you find the RUU of your version or higher . Maybe you could try a stock ROM nand backup ?
Here are stock backups

I don't think your questions relate to the subject here.
Anyway, custom roms are based on the stock rom and most of the times include a file called firmware.zip, look it up in the costum_rom.zip file.
hboot updates are tricky on this device and for upgrading it (from ICS to JB supported hboot) you need a special firmware built for your specific htc one x model (look at the manuals for more instructions).
For the battery saving, I think it depends on the rom you install and not the kernel (or maybe both because they come together?), check out for old posts about that issue, I'm sure its not the first time someone asks about it.
hope it helps

your hboot is old you must be on a custom rom for a long time. Am I correct?
are you on s-off ?

Since you are S-On you will have to go back to stock to take the OTAs to update your firmware (contains hboot). That means stock recovery and ROM, plus an unmodified system partition.
If you were to go S-Off, you could update the firmware manually.
Can you tell me if I need to be S-Off in order to flash back to stock because I don't really understand it in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376

Thanks for reply, but how should it be possible to flash manually the rom with S-ON when I receive the message the I have to update hboot?
Is it possible to download the hboot as a .img?

You don't need to be S-Off to flash the backups. You just need the ones that match your CID and firmware/hboot.
You can find the 3.19 hboot .img files to flash with a simple google search (I just tried). Make sure that is the proper one for your model, and please realize that the hboot is a critical part of your phone and any corruption will brick your device.

Hasn't been updated since it was rooted I see. And that was two years ago. That's a long time.
Hook up to your PC, get into ADB/fastboot, and enter the command fastboot getvar all. Remove your IMEI and serial# first (and MEID if you have one) because that is private info that you should never share on a public forum.
With the information from the getvar, I will be able to direct you on the proper firmware download.
Telling me the hboot version doesn't tell me enough to link you up. It does let me know however, that instructions on how to update aren't enough. You need direction on how to find the firmware for your particular model of M8.
I'll also give you instructions on how to flash the firmware.
You could also go to this thread instead, and learn on your own. It's all in the first couple of posts. It's very informative.
Of course you can post back here after if you have any questions about the process

Reverting back to stock from LeeDroid

Hi,
I recently bought a HTC One M8 and I'm realizing now the phone is running a custom ROM called LeeDroid, upon research I find out it's a pretty awesome ROM.
However, I would love to go back to the stock version that HTC provides.
It's currently running the following:
Android Version: 5.0.2
HTC Sense Version: 7.0
Software Number: LeeDrOiD_One_M8_S7_V7.4.2
I'm kind of a newbie. If anyone could please guide me back to stock which would also allow me to receive OTA updates it would be highly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.

Ok, so this is what I've done so far.
My CID using the CID Getter app off the Play Store was showing: 11111111
I then followed instruction on this site to get my MID: 0P6B12000
Using that MID number on the thread you mentioned, I understood there were two versions of the TWRP Backup, one was 4.16.1540.8 and the other 4.17.1540.9 - I downloaded the later version, is that ok?
I then downloaded the corresponding number under Stock Recovery Collections.
Afterwards I downloaded the relevant TWRP [2.8.7.0 as it says the latest version for the TWRP Backup 4.xx.xxxx.x].
Am I on the right track? Could you dumb down the next steps?
Much appreciated.
If those are your CID & MID, suggest that you get the 4.17.1540.9 RUU instead of going thru nandroids.
4.17.1540.9 backup may not the right one for your device, 4.16.1540.8 is better choice. But 4.17.1540.9 RUU is the best.
Try to search for that RUU or I'll get you the link when I'm home later (in 2 hours)

When you say flash the stock recovery, you mean the 11th step here yes?
Also, why would I update using TWRP? Sorry I'm a little confused.
Thanks
He means that when you perform an official OTA with TWRP it won't work.......bricking the device certainly won't happen. It maybe doesn't boot up that's all (that's certainly NOT a brick) so a reflash of the OS is needed.
You can ONLY perform official OTA with the stock HTC recovery !

HTC 10 Back to Stock

Dears,
I am currently using Viper Rom 3.5 the lastest version but suffering from bad battery life,
I want to return to Stock my CID is HTC__J15
my current base version is 1.95.401.4
any help.
thanks
Easiest way is to ruu
I also returned to stock from Viper, not because of battery issue, but felt tired on cat-and-mouse game for hiding modified bootloader and root when using Android Pay...
You need to do is to search Internet and find the exact OS version RUU (1.95.401.4). If only have earlier version (e.g. 1.50.401.4) then you need to S-Off first, then you can flash earlier version for your variant. (I also purchased Sunshine to s-off before flashing earlier version of RUU).
my CID is HTC__J15 ,
1.95.401.4
i tried the ruu zip but show me an error message (didnt even flash )
any idea. thanks guys
How are you flashing it? SD card in download mode? Or using ruu.exe? If from SD card did you make sure to rename the package to 2ps6img.zip?

Let check carefully what version of your ruu is? From Internet I can only find this one (1.21.401.4):
2PS6IMG_PERFUME_UHL_M60_SENSE80GP_HTC_Europe_1.21.401.4_R_Radio_1.0.U01001360331.4_41.13_F_release_477256_signed_2_4.zip
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24591023225177702
If you are still S-ON, you can't flash earlier version of RUU, the only way is to either find the exact version of RUU (1.95.401.4) or S-OFF first. You can purchase Sunshine to S-OFF, then are able to flash back to stock ROM with version 1.21.401.4. Once back, you can through OTA to update to latest 1.95.401.4.
