I would guess you formatted internal storage? Yea, that wipes everything.
Download a ROM onto your PC and transfer it to your extSD. You said you can get into recovery, so I'll skip that step.
Put the SD card into your phone, and flash the ROM.
That should do it.

You could do that as well, but if you are just going to flash a custom ROM after, you could skip that step and just flash the ROM.
If you are planning on going back to stock, then you are taking the correct path.

Firewater was discontinued months ago. Sunshine S-Off is the ONLY method that works now.

If you want to "fully convert" to GPE to get the different partition scheme (free up internal storage) or get official OTA updates, you will need to use sunshine s-off.
But if you just want to use a GPE ROM, no need to "fully convert". Just flash a GPE based custom ROM. No need to s-off, as long as the ROM supports your current firmware (hboot, radio, etc.).

In my opinion, RUU is "better". RUU is a cleaner install, and contains all partitions. OTA leaves user data (although you can always wipe it yourself for a clean install) and needs to be installed in sequence, since sometimes it only contains the partitions that were updated.
If you are interested in CM12, just try it. How a ROM performs is often unique to the user depending on how you use the phone. For instance, I don't game on my M8, so I can't give you an opinion relevant to your usage.

Hi everyone ,
Here is my problem, I bought a french htc one m8 with orange carrier, I unlocked my bootloader and installed phil's touch recovery and then I flashed skydragon rom 4.4.2 with htc sense 6 but now I would like to flash the last skydragon lollipop but here's my problem , I can't go s-off with this rom so I can't update my firmware or change my CID, so I can't install lollipop rom without wifi's problem. I would like to know how can I do to update my firmware to 4.4.4 cause I tried to s-off with firewater but doesn't work too.
Anyone have a solution would be a god to me ^^

Firewater doesn't work anymore. HTC patched the exploit.
You'll have to use SunShine S-Off. It costs $25, but is guaranteed to work or you don't pay.
Having S-Off is totally worth $25 IMO.
Here's a link to their website.

Go to this thread. It has a collection of stock backups you can falsh to get back your stock ROM.
It also has a collection of stock recoveries to flash with ADB if you need that.
All the instructions are there.

The stock recoveries or in that link too. I'm not sure if you need them for sunshine though. Try with custom recovery, if that doesn't work, get a stock recovery.
Or get both ROM and recovery stock, then reflash a custom recovery and ROM.
If you get both to stock, you shouldn't have any issues.

First, I misunderstood your earlier question. Yes the number in front of the backups are for firmware.
To help you more, I'll need some information. Hook up your phone to your computer and start ADB. Then issue these commands:
adb reboot fastboot (wait till your phone boots into fastboot)
fastboot getvar all
Then post what the readout says here, but edit out your serial number (serialno) and IMEI for your own safety.
Then I'll be able to give you a little more guidance.

Your CID is ORANG202 and your firmware is 1.54.73.5, so you will need the backup that corresponds with that.
The backup available was made with TWRP recovery. So you'll need that. (In my opinion, TWRP is a better recovery, less issues)
You could go to their website to download it and get instructions on how to flash it, but there is a much easier way.
Go to the Play Store and install an app called TWRP Manager. Hit the three line menu thingy on the top left, and pick "Install TWRP".
After that go back to the stock backup thread and flash the backup that matches your CID and firmware.

Ok but I'm french so I'm not that good in english but I will try anyway Thanks
I originally had a stock sense M8 (bought it first day) but since October, I changed my phone to GPE (GPE Firmware and everything) and have been using 5.0 eversince using SkyDragon rom. Ran into issues a few weeks ago, and i've been waiting hard to go back to sense and use the newer 5.0 sense version.
However, today I ran into multiple issues, I thought installing the latest Sense Lollipop firmware and installing the latest ARHD 5.0 rom would do the trick, sadly that did not work.
I flashed the latest sense firmware and the ROM only for it to boot saying my Data is corrupt and i have to reset my phone, i say okay(was going to do that anyway) but then I access my recovery (TWRP) and my Internal storage/Cache/Data will not mount. I tried going back to GPE (atleast so my phone would work) but I cant do that either because even with the GPE firmware, the data partition wont mount and my internal storage shows 0 MB in TWRP, now im just stick in a bootloop/bricked device for hours. Any help would really be appreciated...thanks a lot.
Dev Edition RUU is what I would recommend. Partitioning is different on GPE versus Sense. So I'm guessing running the firmware only, since its not a complete image, did not change the partitioning back to the Sense partition scheme.
Converting from GPE back to Sense is not trivial, and not to be taken lightly. It seems like you tried to make up your own process instead of following any definitive guide or advice, which I do not recommend.

Thanks for your reply, to get this clear:
I should flash the Dev Edition RUU from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/ruu-m8-developer-edition-sense-1-54-t2884777) (3.28.1540.5) and then update the firmware to 4.16.1540.8 by just flashing that separate zip. However, if I flash the RUU wouldn't it relock my bootloader and put me on S-On and lose root and the custom recovery(Im terribly sorry if this sounds dumb, but my phone is soft bricked and I really need to get everything right this time), Is that the case if I flash the dev edition RUU? Thanks again.

No, RUU will not relock the bootloader. The only way the bootloader gets locked/unlocked is if you do so yourself.
Same with s-off, there is nothing that can change that aside from you making it s-on yourself.
Yes, you will lose custom recovery, as RUU will install stock recovery. So just flash stock recovery by fastboot after RUU. Then flash the ROM you want, which should already be rooted (so losing root is a moot point).
Official firmware.zip will also write stock recovery. So doing so would have caused the loss of TWRP anyway (unless it was a user modified firmware zip).

So I downloaded the RUU from (http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/news/) but its an .exe which requires me to plug my phone in which my computer cannot recognize because the phone won't boot at all, is there anyway I can install the RUU by not really needing to connect the phone to the computer? (Put the file in the external SD and install it via the bootloader maybe?) Any tips on that? Thanks

The phone doesn't need to boot into OS to run the RUU. It just needs to be able to get into bootloader/fastboot mode, which it can if the screen comes on.
If the device doesn't show on your PC, its a different issue. USB connectivity issue is almost always a driver issue. Install HTC Sync and HTC drivers, if you haven't already. Or uninstall and install them again.
I have a similiar issue. I had a tombile ruu.zip that a flashed as a 0P6Bimg.zip a kitkiat sense version for tmobile. Everything is cool and it runs fine. When I change cid and mid then flashed the sense lollipop firmware I lost my internal memory and twrp read storage as 0mb.
So idk

I already had HTC Sync installed, had to boot into Fastboot USB for the thing to get recognized.
I got the bootloader unlocked. I flashed TWRP. I installed SuperSu. Now after wiping and installing a new ROM, I can no longer get passed the HTC logo at all. I have tried multiple ROMs including Eragon ROM, Skydragon, and Viper. I really have no idea what to do at this point. Please help. If you need more info just ask. I am able to get into bootloader and TWRP but nothing I have tried has worked. This is the AT&T variant.
Edit: I've also just tried using a different recovery as well (Philz).. no luck.
the only time i had this happening with the M8 was when i forgot to do a full wipe before flashing, then got stuck with the logo. Are you absolutely sure you're performing a full wipe prior to flashing (daft Q i know).
Maybe it's something to do with TWRP? I'm using PhilZ Touch (simply because that it was recommended on the skydragon thread).
Can you restore the original ROM from a backup?

Yes I am doing a full wipe before install. This is incredibly stupid of me and you can all make fun of me for it but I didn't have a backup. I am coming off of an M7 and never had issues with it so I figured it was fine. Guess I was wrong. . I thought it came with a backup stock but there is not one.

I'm not familiar with AT&T variant. The last info that I know they have RUU for 4.4.4, not sure about lollipop.
If you have plan to S-Off your device, with hboot 3.16.0000 you have better chance to do it with SunShine.
Once you updated your firmware, the chance to S-Off is slimmer.
Either you browse thru AT&T forum for info or maybe @redpoint73 can assist you here.

Depending on the ROM, most of them require a particular firmware (which contains hboot, radio, WiFI, media moduels and others), not just the hboot.
You can update to 4.4.4 firmware by RUU (relock bootloader since you are s-on). Backup any personal data first, as RUU will wipe the phone.
Once updated to 4.4.4 firmware, you can run any ROM that supports that firmware. If you want a ROM that requires 5.0 firmware, you currently need s-off to manually (by "unofficial" means) update the firmware; until AT&T releases official 5.0.
Yes, its confusing and you can blame HTC for the firmware complications.
RUUs are linked in my (AT&T specific) index thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432

Hello Guys,
Today I decided to install CyanogenMod 13 on my HTC One M8. Here is what I did:
- Unlocked the bootloader;
- Flashed TWRP Recovery;
- In recovery, I wiped everything I could;
- Installed CM13 and Gapps.
Now, the phone works good, but in case I want to go back to stock, what should I do? I still have S-ON.
Thanks for the help!
(also, info about where to download the stock ROM is welcome)
You should have made a nandroid backup right after flashing TWRP.
Oh and there are 2 threads with backups. 1 here in the Q&A and 1 in the general. Can't be missed !

Because they are incorrect.
You can go back to stock by flashing a stock TWRP backup and stock recovery, but you can't set the flag to "locked" from "unlocked" without S-Off. You can only set it to "relocked".
But you can go back to the stock ROM and recovery easily.

You don't need S-Off to install custom ROMs. You do need it to convert to GPE, if that's what you mean. The M8 and M8 GPe are different models with different partition locations and sizes.
You do need to be on a stock or close to stock ROM to gain S-Off.
ViperOneM8 works, and has been suggested by the developers of Sunshine S-Off.
MaximusHD is also known to work, and is what I usually suggest even though I work with Team Venom.
It's always worked because it is very near stock.
I imagine that it works with ViperOneM8 on a fresh install, before flashing the modifications that are available, or going through the Tweaks.

Great info, thanks a lot.
Any idea if Android Revolution HD by Mike will do?
Anyway, if the Official CM recovery will be able to install CM13+ updates when they release them, I am totally fine with how the phone is right now.
