Hey guys,
So I'm trying to figure out why my HTC One is having camera issues all of the sudden. It seems to take video fine, but it has major issues focusing on anything more then a foot away. So this is making it very hard to take pictures of anything. I'm going to attach a picture of my car, and I can tell you that I clicked all over the screen trying to get it to focus on anything at all.
Some important info, I'm on the latest official firmware and on a ported version of Sense 7 (see my sig). I am starting to wonder if the issue started with the first 5.0.1 Lollipop build I tried, because I don't recall the issue when I was on the last KitKat build. Could it be possible the new lollipop software is not playing nice with the older M7 hardware? I asked in the ROM thread to see if anyone else was having the issue, but it did not seem to be an issue with other users.
So that leads me to my next idea, could the hardware have gone bad? But then why would the video camera be taking clear and focused video? It does not have any crazy colors like the known issue is with our cameras, but it just will not focus.
Let me know if you have any ideas for me to try, I would really appreciate it.
@Ahowe125
Have you tried going back to KitKat?
Typically when you try something that has been ported over, there will be at least one broken feature. For me, its always the camera. For someone else, its always the bluetooth. Everything else works fine for me.

As of right now, No I have not. I didn't make a backup of my old kitkat rom when switching to 5.0.1 so I'll have to go re-download and install it. Maybe It may not be a bad idea to try that, and then if the camera works try and install a fresh version of lollipop again.
Thanks for the idea, I'll try that later tonight.

I personally don't think flashing KitKat and going back to Lollipop is going to fix your issue, at least in my experience it has not. It's just this modified port. Once HTC put the official Sense 7 code out there, then maybe it'll fix it. But that's still going to be a m9 port. If there was an official Sense 7 lollipop for m7 then I can almost guarantee it'll work.

Thanks for the idea, I just tried this today and still no luck. Its like the focus is broken. I have not had time to switch back to KitKat. Hopefully I can hold out until April until LP firmware is slated to be released for our M7.
Also, just for the sake of trying, I downloaded the Google Camera from the play store, and it also is having issues with focusing on just about anything. More then a foot away it will not make a clear focus on.
So just a quick update, I tried all the different camera settings and it still won't focus.
Also, I finally had time to install a kitkat rom that I had previously used and knew the camera worked on. My phone has the latest stock kitkat firmware and my camera will still not focus.
It seems like its trying, as it will adjust for distance and I can see the mechanism moving inside the camera, but I for the life of me don't understand why it won't focus like it use to.
After that test I flashed the newest version of my favorite ROM and I'm not sure what to do/try now. Should I try to contact HTC? Would it even be something they would warranty or fix on this old of a phone?
Thanks for your ideas.
Well... I think this phone just might be showing its age or something. In the year or better I have had it, its been perfect. Now this week the top speaker decided to crap out on me. Its more then likely blown, as it makes a horrible rattling noise when any loud sounds are played. I tried cleaning it out and blowing with compressed air with no luck.
I guess maybe its time to upgrade to an M9. But this phone has been so awesome... decisions decisions.

I was hoping you had a fix for this since my mothers phone just starting doing this as well. I have no idea whats causing it.
For the camera, I have tried reflashing the firmware, installed new versions of both lollipop and kitkat OS and even tried different camera applications. I'm almost sure it has to be hardware related.
As far as the speaker goes, its almost always hardware as I've blown car audio speakers that had the same horrible noise. Not much I can do there. I did try the cleaning method with a toothbrush and compressed air with no change.
I also wish I had a fix because I bought this phone brand new and it's been amazing. I can't upgrade right now and don't want to foot the price for an M9. So I bought what looked like a very clean m8 from @tonyb81 on swappa. Should be here tomorrow and then I have to figure out what to do with this broken m7.

Yea I understand and i meant to say that she only has the camera problem and not the speaker problem. I have the same phone but have neither problem. I am thinking it is hardware problem as well since she uses her camera a lot more than I do.

It's really strange too, because it just stopped working one day. It wasn't intermittent or anything. One day it just wouldn't focus and I thought maybe I was doing something wrong or a setting was messed up. But nothing I tried worked.
I wondered if I should contact HTC about it and still might. But it doesn't help its been s-off and unlocked since before my activation. Once I get the M8 I think I'm going to try a few more things and maybe put it all back to totally stock.
If nothing else I might sell it as a parts phone or keep as a backup.

I googled the problem and it seems a few other have had the problem as well. So far they all seem to had to get new phones.
Sent from my only One.
The camera and speaker problems are both hardware related. The camera is known for having the issues that both of you have run into and the only fix is getting the phone replaced. I had heard that HTC extended the warranty for phones with the camera issue but I don't know if this is true.

I have an issue: I've noticed that there is the odd popping sound on every video I take. It isn't a constant pop-pop-pop, but just every so often at random. But it is present on every video I've taken so far.
Wondering if anyone else has the same issue? Any suggestions?
I am running stock with the Perseus kernel.
Thanks!
I had this happen once. I thought the wind was blowing on the mic.
Do you happen to have a case on your phone? There might be something that taps the case and might be picked up by the speaker as a pop.
Rings, long nails, keys, I don't know the list could go on.

Yes, I do have a soft-shell case. I thought it might be that too, but I took it off and did some test filming and got the same result. This is really starting to tick me off now; I've had the phone for 5 or 6 weeks now and have only noticed this. What a pain!
I have also done voice recording using a voice recorder app, and no problems with that.
I tried a different camera app and the videos still have the popping.
No other suggestions?
Ok, just linking a video so you can hear what I'm talking about, in case it triggers something in someone's brain....
Again, this has happened on stock, as well as CleanRom. Different camera apps used. I've tried with data off. I've tried with SD card out. I've lowered system volume to zero. I've removed the case. There is no such issue when speaking on the phone, nor is it present when using a voice recorder app.
Everything else about the phone is perfect, but I'm ready to smash it to bits over this, I'm so pissed off. :silly:

Nope. Hold the phone by the side. But just to be sure, I've let it sit on its own on the table and same thing.
Mine made that same sound only one time. It was during the inning when my son(5yrs) got 3 unassisted outs. Pissed me off

To narrow down a software VS hardware issue, the first thing you'll want to do is restore to stock. No root, no kernel, no nuffin. If the issue persists, that is usually a purdy good indicator of a hardware issue. Should that be the case, a warranty replacement may be your best option. If the issue persists after a replacement, I'd say its a good bet its something in your environment/situation that is causing the popping.

Thanks for that. Yes, at this point I've tried everything I can think of. I don't believe it has anything to do with environment or anything, as it happens all the time. It has been driving me batty for the last week; I've done nothing but obsess over it. I hadn't noticed it before, but once I had, I started looking at every video I've taken since I bought it and found that it has been going on the whole time. I got the phone at the end of January. One of the first vids I took was a cpl of days later, which I put on youtube. I checked that vid out and sure enough the issue is there.
I called Samsung yesterday and got a UPS shipping label from them to send it in. I'm not keen on having to do all the work to unroot and make like I never rooted it, lose it for up to 3 weeks, and (if they send a replacement back), lose the $30 I spent on my Zagg screen protector.
I guess I will try what you've said; restore to pure stock and pray to God. Thanks!
I've installed CM10 and the camera with it is flawless. Why do you think that is?
Sorry for bumping this up, but I've done all kinds of experimenting and have pretty much determined that it is solely a TW based issue.
But what I'd like to ask now is: using Snap Camera, I get the same result (popping noise). However, Snap Camera has a setting for "Use Alternate Mic", which, when I choose that, there is no popping. So the question is: does anyone know how I can make the stock camcorder use the 'alternate mic' like Snap Camera does?
I have no idea where that would be edited.
Please! Thanks!

Hello everyone! I have been having literally the worst two weeks trying to get the proximity sensor on my Note II to behave consistently. The sensor does not provide any feedback to the system. Using Android Sensor Box just returns the "No change detected yet" message. I am seriously at wit's end with this. I tried starting over and flashing stock using Odin but it doesn't seem like the kernel is at all affected through that and does not provide reliable results. Sometimes I can flash a stock kernel and the sensor works, but as soon as I either flash a different ROM or flash a different kernel, I am not able to use the sensor. I do not believe it to be the hardware because I have tried two different assemblies with the sensor on it to no avail. Is there anyone that could help? (And yes, I have searched high and low for any kind of guidance on this) I really like this phone, but this is definitely a deal breaker.
Firstly what are you trying to do with the proximity sensor, that is not working for you? Auto brightness, or one of the samsung touchless features?
Thank you for replying. What queued me into the fact that it wasn't working was that my screen does not turn off when I put the phone up to my face during a call. But it doesn't work for any purpose. If it's of any help, the light sensor also does not work, so I'm not able to use things like auto-brightness either.

What type of Rom/kernels are you flashing that makes it stop working? AOSP or touchwiz?
Have you tried several, all with the same result?
You're saying that it does work when you run stock as well?

Both, I've tried using Perseus, Neak, SOAPKernel and of course stock. The ROM does not matter either, I really intend to use PAC-man RC1 Milestone, but right now I am using the Stock ROM and it is still not working.

I have definitely flipped the flash counter, but there's always Triangle Away right? I'm actually totally screwed because I busted my screen a while back and replaced it and the one I got was for an International phone. I guess I could try a third sensor? This is bad news

You may have damaged it during the screen swap, or it could maybe just be loose or shorting, which is why occasionally it will work.

Okay so my mind is officially blown. Replaced the sensor with a new one and still not getting any feedback from either sensor. I really still do think it's something about the kernel, but because I have limited knowledge of these things, I am probably not the best person to diagnose the issue
The issue is definitely that the sensor just does not turn on, which is odd because the camera works. I found a thread with some proximity sensor calibration stuff but it is a bit over my head.

I find that strange though if you have tried several, all with the same issue
i am having the same issue, except tha also notification led will not work on stock roms but it will work on cm roms.
So, just a conclusion on this issue. I decided to just transplant the sticker from the original screen I had and exchange this phone using its warranty. When I was preparing the phone to return to the device support center, when I flashed back to stock and had already Triangle Away'd, the sensor did turn on and was recognized in the *#0*# diagnostic screen, but it still did not turn the screen off during calls and Motions were still not functioning. So, ultimately, no real solution in my case.
:good:
Easy FIX!!!!!
I took a can of compressed air and blew it through the top earpiece grill a few times and Voila, it works great now!!
I actually used a Old perfume can which perfume was over and it was only pressing Gas OFF!! :good::good::good:
Anyone have any ideas. Used to work no problem. Now if I rename or delete the one files nothing seems to happen.

Well mostly because I've never had to root a phone to fix software issues, mostly pissed with LG support about the issue on the camera.
And the fact that it's opened a few times from slight tugs on my headphones(case cracked open), it is the smallest phone on the market while being huge, it resets my options, and not lately (nougat issue not a phone issue) it's locked me out of having volume above 60%.
And though I'm generally happy with a lot of things having this many issues with a new phone isn't fun.

Hi guy,
Not sure if anyone else has had this (can't find anything here, or with search engine, so starting to worry it's not software problem), but just the other night, was surfing then all of a sudden, I get this loud horn type noise from my phone... Certainly woke me up! Then stopped... Then no sooner did it stop, again it happened. I check, but my volume is almost at mute. So I close Chrome, and re-open, and haven't heard it since, but now I have noticed my speakers crackle and distort on certain frequencies.
I'm hoping this is just some software issue, that hopefully I can just update, or re-set, but I haven't come across anyone else having this problem.
Please help
Thankyou, O.

Do you have any mods (audio) installed ?
Are you rooted? Running a custom ROM ?
We need a little more information..
If you're completely stock then no it's not normal and I'd put my money on a hardware defect..
If you are rooted with a custom ROM and perhaps some mods installed it still doesn't sound normal and I'd try to go back to a custom but stock type ROM.
Least then you can see; if it replicates, then it's more than likely a hardware issue.
Did u push the speakers a little too much with a mod? Over amplify them or similar? Any water damage? Drops?
From the outset it doesn't look good but until you / we can answer the above we won't know more.
Hopefully it's just a mod gone wrong.
If not then it'll be a defect covered by warranty anyway..So a return to stock and RMA will get it sorted, so a hindrance but not then end of the world.
Let us know.

Hi Dladz,
Sorry I didn't put more info in before.
I'm totally stock (running 7.0). Not running away mods, or audio changes.
I suspect that it is just that, a hardware issue, I was just hoping not. I've never had an issue with any of my HTCs' before, nor have any of my friends. The build quality has always been the best you can get.
I guess it's back to the supplier it goes :/
Thanks for the response,

Ah that is a shame and no worries, I've skipped info before as i'm sure others have and will
I wouldn't let it put you off HTC they do make some rugged devices and I swear by them, speak to a rep and see what RMA would take then get it done mate
All will be well, this wasn't your fault, I'm just thinking what could've caused it if anything?
Playing at loud volume constantly, music or audio with frequencies which put stress on the speaker??? Nah I dunno mate, either way it's not your fault so get yourself a nice replacement

Thanks Dladz,
I've loved HTC from the start, and still do. I recommend them to everyone I know and meet. This is just one fault in the entire history of mine and everyone I know who has or had one! I think that is a pretty good fault rate.
I'm already hankering for the HTC Ocean ? Can't wait ?

I had this problem too on my HTC 10 one month and a half ago . I was on leedroid with nebula kernel and no other sound mod and all of the sudden the bottom speaker started to crackle and make many distortioned sounds . I suspected to be the kernel so I asked the developer , but he said that he hasn't touched anything sound related . No one , but only me, had this problem reported on kernel thread . I asked on ROM thread but the same.
Now I see that someone on purely stock had this problem. Only thing I can say is that where I live 2 months ago was a really cold winter and that affected the speaker.
I had send it back to repair services and now it's all good

I just hope they don't put the home button on the back!
It is this same issue that´s making me want to upgrade from my otherwise still great HTC One M8. A distorting top speaker that the repair shop couldn't fix (they tried 3 new speakers, to no avail). It´s very annoying and I am waiting to see if the HTC 11 ticks everything I want in a smartphone:
- Full Metal Chassis
- Stereo Front Speakers
- 64GB of UFS 2.1 Storage
- 4GG of RAM
- Support to Micro SD cards
- Snapdragon 835
- Great low light camera with IOS (like the Pixel)
- Preferably with water resistance
Otherwise, I am buying the HTC 10, which is much cheaper now since it´s been almost a year since it was launched.
I dont understand why we dont even have a Evan Blass rumor about the supposed upcoming HTC 11, that is making me a bit worried...
Cheers
I have the same problem.
Now if anyone know what is the certain solution for this problem?

I'm facing occasional lags on my Pixel. Every now and then the launcher and UI overall become unresponsive. It happens with the stock rom and LineageOS. I think it could be caused by an app or something but I haven't had any luck finding the culprit.
I tried disabling Digital Wellbeing, and even though it seems to work at first the lag comes back time after.
How are your Pixels standing up? Do you have any lag on yours?
I have a Verizon Pixel XL with the bootloader unlocked, do you think unlocking the bootloader may cause this issue?
Hope to heard from you, my experienced comrades.
I suppose a fresh flash is needed. However, as you said you are on LOS, so you have already done a fresh installation. In that case I am not sure. Maybe something hardware breaking as the device is old or something? I certainly wish not.

Hmm, this is my 2nd Pixel. I recently purchased 2 for some friends, I also had a 32gb version before, all of them have the same issue. I just happen to think is caused by Android P.

I happen to have a stuck-for-few-seconds problem way back when the phone was new, on Nougat. It drove me crazy. Sold the first pixel for that reason alone and moved to the dark side. But then when I came back to another Marlin after couple of months I found that the problem was gone! Sometimes this type of problem happens on some specific Pixel devices I suppose, its not reported as it happens to a very few Pixels I guess! Either wait for an upcoming update to see whether it fixes stuffs, or maybe move to some other device. But I feel you, I remember quite well how that problem made me go total bonkers, probably you will find my threads on it as well. Good luck.
