Hey guys, I'm just curious as to how come there's no 4ext recovery for the M8
And I'd also like to ask what's the procedure to making or porting a recovery (cause I'm absolutely clueless) A link to it would do fine.
I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge but here's what I gathered so far from owning an HTC Amaze 4g
4ext allows the flashing of a boot partition via SmartFlash, which can be enabled and disabled accordingly.
I think it was extra useful for those who couldn't achieve S-OFF with JuopunutBear
So I'm thinking (More like assuming) the S-OFF function is still the same.
That's basically why I'm asking if having a recovery such as 4ext on the M8 would help those who can't get S-OFF to flash roms that might need it.
I can't speak from experience because I was successful in getting S-OFF on my Amaze4G but there were some people who claimed that it allowed them to flash roms that required S-OFF
You can flash the boot.img without issues, this isn't the old One X issue!!
We also have a different S-OFF method to the old days so TWRP is the custom recovery of choice these days

So I tried a number of different times with different ROMS, and the only successful one was upgrading to CyanogenMod 7.0.3 just to see if flashing works at all on this phone. In the past, I had followed the wiki's instructions to root and then downgrade my phone. So now I have the following on my HTC Vision/Desire Z:
VISION PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.84.2000 (PC1011000)
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M

So, following the Droidzone website has been difficult because I cannot seem to find any of the specific versions of custom recovery mods they recommend. I suppose this is an issue. I have never successfully flashed Amon-Ra; I am not sure what the right version to use would be and the recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img just hangs after successfully flashing with the fastboot method (I am surprised to see it works at all since it appears old Amon-Ra ROMs had their own special flash_image utility, but I could be mistaken). So, downgrading several different CWM roms (3.0.2.4->3.0.0.5->2.5.1.3) because the website says 3.0.0.0+ is buggy, I got the same problem every time as this guy, where I fail to write /tmp/boot.img to boot. This happened after numerous times taking a clean phone and resetting all /data and /cache manually and through the CWM wizard prompts, so I assume I am doing something very wrong if it does not work.
Now, it appears that I *do* need the Amon-Ra recovery to make this happen, if this thread is correct. So, my questions:
Am I missing something trivial?
Is the Amon-Ra recovery *required*?
If so, what is the best version for my Desire Z/Vision given the current customizations?
If not the Amon-Ra issue described (since the plain Desire could be a different issue, what is the best course of action?
Also I will be traveling after a few hours so I might not get back to you guys in a while, but thanks so much in advance for taking the time. I am sure I did not RTFM as I should, but I have spent days on and off outside of work attempting to figure this out. It is driving me fscking nuts!
Um, bump? Does anyone have any experience with the ROM at all? The Droidzone dev did not mention a specific thread on his website for support. All of them are in the Desire Development forum, and stickies explicitly this type of install question did not belong in those types of threads.
Turns out I am a moron: this ROM is meant specifically for the Desire, not any other phone (it is a modded ROM specifically of an official Desire ROM). If it were not for failsafes, I would have bricked my phone. Lesson learned, do not be a moron like me.
Hello!
I flashed my Toshiba Folio a year ago using a guide from this forum and it worked brilliantly, and because my HTC Desire Z was getting slower by the minute, I decided I wanted a custom ROM on my DZ.
I used the HTC Dev Unlock to get root, that went all perfectly.
After that, I installed Clockwork Recovery Mod and tried to flash 2 different Custom Roms (Android Revolution HD™ 7.0.0) and CyanogenMod-7.
What I didn't realize was that I needed S-off to flash a custom Rom, and now I only get a white HTC screen at startup.
It is still possible to get in Hboot/fastboot and into the Clockwork recovery mod, but I can't find a solution to what to do now. ADB isn't working in hboot/fastboot and the ways to get S-off are with ADB. Can I get my DZ back into original state safely, or is there another way to get S-off?
Thank you all in advance!
Ps: I also tried flashing a lower (1.34) ROM or a Stock Rom, but they don't work

I want to thank NIPQER very much for solving my problems on #G2ROOT
I was wondering if it was possible to install e.g. CWM or 4ext Recovery without actually S-OFF'ing the Desire?
AFAIK impossible
Even with htc-dev unlock?
Unrevoked can do it, though you'll be stuck on a really old cwm. So better just s-off and install 4ext after.

I dont know what are you thinking about. Having S-ON is like a pain in the *** tbh.
By doing S-OFF you only gain - this removes every limit HTC imposed on your phone. I know this takes some risk, but if you done this, you will get more control over phone and it will be more secure as you will be able to use your favourite recovery as well as fastboot.
I'm not worried anymore until i have S-OFF'ed my phone. Flashed hboot, radio, recovery, boot partitions many times via fastboot and once it even saved my phone as i couldnt boot into android and i was using broken recovery. Due to S-OFF i could flash new recovery, then copy to sd and flash new android via it.
why do people reply when they don't know or can't help??
Yes you can.
Run unrevoked, in options select custom recovery, then you can use 4ext, amon ra etc. clockwork is fine but a bit usb brick prone. It'll flash the recovery in the process. To be honest you may as well soff.
4ext is the best really.

Thank God... finally one who knows
It might be me who has misunderstood, but isn't it correct that with s-on, it is always possible to recover a brick, while with s-off, in some cases it would be impossible?

When you screw up your phone for some reason, having s-off is more of an advantage in getting it fixed...

Actually thank research, xda, me, maybe even Alan Turing, but thanking a non existent celestial dictator is a wasted thank you. ;-)
Okay, so I now have CWM with S-ON, if I decided I would like S-OFF at a later point, how would I go about doing this?
alpharev. google that.
don't know why you are all so eager for S-OFF.
i use CWM, sandvolds ICS and a 2GB ext4 partition - all with S-ON and i have not a single reason to complain.
until now i have not experienced an error due to S-ON.
it might have some advantages, but for me it's fine that way.
just wanted to let you know it's very possible.

Until you have to flash an ruu that's not for your cid because the correct one isn't available.. Or get an lcd brick, or want to change hboot, etc etc.. being s-off can mean the difference between a phone and a paper weight.
Hence why devs spend so much time and energy seeking exploits to enable it on just about every HTC.
yeah, sure. it has its advantages, but points you just mentioned don't apply to me.
i'm planning to stick with this rom i currently use. it runs perfect in every way.
so i thought like "never change a running system".
i know, that quote is very inappropriate here at xda
but i'm just kind of afraid that i will only make things worse, when i s-off now.
all i've been tryin to say is that s-off is not absolutely neccessary.
Then you will not realize the potential that your phone holds. Being S-OFF is not aBsolutely necessary for the people who don't wish to know their phone.
Hello,
I recently bought an used Desire Z (euorpean version) and it had a Cyagenmod on it, but I don't like that and wanted to install a Stock rom. I've downloaded this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169004 (the second one) started the phone in Bootloader, went into recovery, wiped all caches and data, installed the zip from the zip and restarted it. It loaded but couldn't pass the htc screen, so I thought it could be a good idea to flash the boot.img via fastboot but that also didn't help (I waited about 30minutes but nothing happened).
I already rooted a Samsung S5something, a htc Desire HD and a htc evo 3d but I'm really stuck with this one.
Here are the infos from the bootloader:
Vision PVT ENG S-OFF

Is it bricked? If yes can I repair it or should I trash it?
Is here maybe someone from europe whom I could send this phone to flash the newest stock rom on it? I really love that phone and always wanted to have one (this special one is in nearly perfect condition).
Please help me cause I'm helpless :crying:
I doubt you are bricked, it was probably just a bad flash or a bad download as that ROM should work fine for you. And being you are s-off you don't need to flash the kernel from fastboot
Just do a full wipe/format and flash the ROM again or try another, all links found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348266
Just pick a gingerbread sense ROM and it will be a rooted version of stock. Just be sure to wipe all partitions in either recovery or fastboot
Best of luck!
I tried 3 different Roms now:
Virtuos Sense Gingerbread
WWE_2.42.405.4 Rooted StockROM
T-Mobile G2 Stock (OTA 2.16.531.5) Rooted
This time I didn't flash boot.img via fastboot and none of them will load. The phone is stuck in the htc screen allthough the setup always says that it was completed successfully.
I never had so many problems with a phone before.
If it matters the phones uses ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.1.0
I just realised I have a G2 and not a Z.
Could some please post me a stock Gingerbread Rom that works 100% with the G2 in europe? Cause I'm really really frustrated and desperate (sitting here around 4 hours and nothing works).
Don't worry about G2 vs DZ ROMs, it wont matter just he preference
Grab the latest 4ext recovery and format all partitions in recovery then flash away
I forgot how to do this (i had 4ext touch on my Desire HD and Evo3D) and here I can only find apk files, could you please give me a link to a file that I can flash onto the G2? Or tell me how to install the apk without an OS.
See the thread I linked you prior
There is a section on recoveries and if that wont help see the section on fastboot
THX alot, I figured it out and I managed to get it starting.
Now I've got only one last question.
Where can I get a 2.42.405.5 or at least 2.42.405.4 for my device, I'm asking because mine says all the time that is an update (but updating fails, I know -> S-OFF)? The only things I've found here are 2.42.405.4 (which i cant download for some reason) and 2.42.405.4 (WiFi doesn't work).
I'm not sure really as I couldn't stand the stock ROMs for this phone, especially with so many superior custom ROMs to pick from.
Maybe just grab a stock based ROM, it will be much more stable, better battery life etc and you won't even have to remove any of the bloat. But of course that's your choice
Okay guys, I just have a couple of quick (I hope) questions in regards to rooting an HTC One M7 on Verizon Wireless.
I've done a lot of research and I am genuinely confused about everything and really just need a few questions answered. I've done my research and done my googling but I still need some help.
I haven't rooted a phone in probably well over 2-3 years. The last phone I rooted was a HTC Evo on Sprint which was a breeze. I've had my HTC One for a little over a year now I believe. I'm getting kind of bored of it and I saw that CyanogenMod has come a long way since I last used it. Through my research I have found that the Verizon HTC One M7 is kind of difficult and complicated to root and I apparently need to S-OFF as well, which I have no experience with. My phone has been kept up-to-date (I know that's a bad thing in this case) and I'm running Android 4.4.3, software number 5.28.605.2, baseband version 1.13.41.0702. I'm not sure what out of that information is relevant but there you have it.
What I'm wanting to do is unlock/root/whatever my phone, install CWM recovery, and CM11. Now from the research I have done it appears that if I purchase SunShine S-Off (which looks like my only option) it will s-off, root, and unlock everything that is necessary to install the custom recovery and ROM.
So my questions are this:
I'm terrified of freezing/boot-loops because this is the first phone I'd be rooting without the ability of popping the battery out for a hard restart. Is it safe to modify this phone? Are there usually any issues?
Will SunShine do everything that I need to go from a stock Verizon HTC One to being able to flash CWM and CM11?
Are there any good tutorials on doing this with the latest updated Verizon HTC One M7? A lot of the tutorials I find seem to be outdated.
If the answer to the second question is yes, then all I need to do is purchase SunShine, follow install instructions for CWM, and follow install instructions for CM11, correct?
Thanks for your time and putting up with my stupid questions.
