So recently I found out about flashing ROM's and custom recoveries, so I tried a few things out. I wasn't super ready to flash a new ROM, but I did a new recovery.
But now I have a few questions:
1: Concerning the bootloader, is there any way to Modify it? I've been having a bit of trouble (I explain this in more detail here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gen...sue-screen-off-powered-off-t3054749?nocache=1)
2: Is there any benefit to flashing custom ROM's to such an old device (The LG optimus G)?
3: Now I've had my G for about 2 years now, should I keep this or switch to some of the newer devices? I haven't seen any reason too, but this is an old(ish) phone now.
4: I feel like the stock ROM on any device is the one to use, Keeping this in mind I would like to know what kind of things I can do to the stock ROM to make it better.

Hello everyone. I'm a recent android convert from iOS, and loving it.
I've rooted and gotten CWM onto my Telus GS3 and made a back-up of the stock samsung rom
I would like to try out some of the other roms and have been pouring over the threads. Unfortunately, i'm still confused about a few things and hoping someone can clarify or point me in the right direction:
Flashing a new rom seems easy enough. I'd like to try out CM10/aristodemos JB. What i'm confused about is the following:
1. according to this thread, i might run into issues w/ build.prop

what is it? and do i need to be following what they say in that thread w/ all of the AT&T roms i try to flash?
2. do i need to be re-flashing my telus modem from the Modem List after i flash these roms?
I guess i just haven't found the one thread that summarizes for us Telus users, what we need to do Differently when flashing say the CM10 or any other of the AOSP roms?

Hi! I've a Telus S III myself and ran into absolutely no problems rooting and reflashing it (with CM10) - no build.prop tinkering and no modem reflashing (third party ROM images normally don't include modems, and those that do will note this).
I rooted through flashing - with Odin - the rooted Telus image available over in the sticky in the dev forum, which also includes instructions for flashing a CWM (make sure it is new enough to avoid the error 7 described in the other thread).
Basically, there's nothing really Telus-specific unless you choose the pre-rooted image route for rooting, and that only applies to the root process.

I think this screenshot should have all of the relevant information. I would tried this sooner, but it was end of college, I got my first full time job, etc etc.
My main issue with this phone is that it does random "soft" resets where everything just comes down and it reboots to the lock screen. This is especially fun when I'm driving and using this as a GPS :laugh:. I'm pretty sure the kernel is involved somehow, but I honestly don't know.
I want to know:
1. What do you guys think would be the most efficient way for me to update both the ROM and Kernel?
2. Is there any way to do this without having to re-root?
3. Would I be better off just choosing a non-stock ROM in order to get to the latest version of the android OS more easily?
That's about it, pretty simple. Just some directions would be nice as I'm quite out of the loop. Thanks.
If you don't want to do the research or take the time to go through the trouble of reading through these forums, then the most efficient way will be to remain stock unrooted and update via the approved methods from your carrier and/or Samsung (OTA and/or Kies usually). All software versions from ICS on up (non international S3s are now officially on KitKat) have been covered extensively by now so I doubt anyone is going to entertain your direct request for information. There are many things you need to be aware of, such as but not limited to how the new bootloaders and KNOX, as well as how custom roms and kernels, are working together in the big picture of things.
NOTE: Regardless of which route you take, no one in this forum, including myself, is responsible should anything happen to your phone. Anything you do to your phone is at your own risk, including official updates from your carrier and Samsung.

As for having to re-root, you won't if you flash a custom ROM. Getting the OTA (or Kies) update will require a re-root which can be easily done with Towelroot.
As for the "most efficient", just follow the ROM's OP instructions to a T - it''s usually straight forward and easy to follow.

Okay so basically the most (time) efficient way for me to update is to get some custom ROM. That's fine, all I need to work on my phone is a few programs nowadays. Namely Google maps and the phone (well and the browser). Is Kernel updating the same? What's one of the good kernels and roms these days for the purposes battery life?
The main reason I'm making this topic is I'm fine with just going out and following directions, but I'm updating from such an old version that I'm wondering if there are any "gotchas". Like I update it to this with my old kernel and the thing is suddenly bricked. That's really what I'm worried about.

Kernel will be overwritten in the flashing process. All you gotta do is make sure you recovery is up to date if you go the custom ROM way.
We don't make suggestions as for what ROM/kernel to use to avoid flaming and it also comes down to user preference. Although, I do suggest starting to look at some custom ROMs (most of them come with their own kernel but can also flash another one). It will most likely come down to AOSP vs TW (stock) base.
The closest to a suggestion I can make is to look at the top threads in the Dev section, those are the most "popular" ROMs/kernels.
Alright, looking around at the various threads in the development section I see that most of them look pretty simple to install. Just download the zip, reboot into clockwork and install after doing some resets.
I notice that some of these require a new bootloader/modem, though... I haven't seen those terms when I last did this. What are the general installation instructions for those; the same as custom roms? Can they brick your device (assuming that I even pick the one for my device)? I'll probably just install something that doesn't need me to update the bootloader/modem to make things simple.
For the most part, if you've updated to 4.3 you will be able to flash any available roms. The catch is once on 4.3, you cannot downgrade your firmware.
Firmware is updated either by ota or flashing with Odin.
I went ahead and got the Slimkat because the instructions for it were pretty easy. There are some unpleasant changes about it that I would like some assistance on, but I suppose that would go in the dev thread to ask about those. Thanks for the info, it helped give me some confidence about just trying it out. Like I said a little iffy about some of the things but overall I like. At least it hasn't randomly crashed on me yet, and getting all of my apps back was as easy as having TitaniumBackup extract them from my Nandroid backup.
Since, Koodo has started carrying G3 (model D852) i bought one and i want to start using custom ROMs (coming from Nexus 5)
but, before i start the process of root and recovery, etc i want to make sure that i have a backup plan i.e. stock koodo factory image for G3
i have been searching all over xda and could not find one, could someone please help me with this.
Also, i am use to installing custom roms, it seems the procedure for LG G3 is much different from Nexus phones ( i owned all of them except N6). So, if i understand it correctly
First, i need to root my device
second, i need to install custom recovery using BUMP
third, i can only install ROM that have been built with BUMP

So...
I got the tablet coming up on a year ago, and I rooted and installed TWRP immediately.
I'm currently running a stock ROM, and would like to continue to run stock based roms, but I've had issues with the custom kernel I'm running. The skyhigh thread is meager when it comes to details, but it also includes a few cryptic warnings about base and source and boot loader. Because I have no idea which one I'm running, or what to flash in TWRP, I'm in a terrible spot.
Searches, P.M.s and thread posts haven't gotten me anywhere.
Even if I could use Odin, the stock firmware thread, and the TW-Based ROM threads don't include the requirements, how you can test to see if you meet them, and if you don't, how you'd go about letting the requirements for base, etc.
Because of the introduction of threads like the stock firmware thread early on, root and odin methods used obscure FW, and now when selecting a few to download you have to choose between FW from France....from no country at all, or from the made up country of Us Cellular. So again, even if I wanted to broach the idea of Odin back to some semblance of stock, I couldn't.
But I ****desperately need a reflash/wipe/update***
Id like to run ironrom and kernel....
So how would I get there....from here? And preferably with TWRP?

Picked up my OP3 on Monday (Contract with o2 in the UK) and itching to flash a new ROM. Just has a few questions.
Does the all in one toolkit still work? Comfortable with adb and fast boot but toolkit is obviously easier and quicker.
Currently running latest firmware is there any precautions to take when flashing ROMs etc? On previous devices it's been a simple boot into TWRP/CWM, wipe, flash ROM/gapps and happy days. Are all ROMs compatible?
Noticed OnePlus don't consider unlocking a bootloader and flashing etc worthy of voiding a warranty- does this mean if anything did happen at some point and I was running custom ROMs that o2 will still repair it or do they not follow OP's after care? Whilst im on this topic; Can you relock the bootloader with ease if anything was to happen?
Finally which 7.X ROM is the most stable with good battery life and plenty of features? Personal favourite has always been PACman but haven't had a chance to scroll through the current ROMs for this device yet. On my G3 many custom ROMs which weren't based on stock had terrible camera quality, is this common on the OP3 too?

1. Yes the toolkit should still work
2. Flashing roms is the same as all other devices
3. If the problem was not caused because of the custom rom the they will repair it for you i guess.
4. And as far as battery life is concerned it is determined more by the kernel than the rom. I would recommend exkernel and official cm14.1

Another question haha, can I just unlock bootloader, load up TWRP, boot into recovery, wipe, install any ROM and I'm golden? Saw a few threads say firmware X.X.X aren't compatible and you need to jump to X.X.X for it to work as well as some fingerprint problems occurring if not using a certain build?
Just wondering if the above is all old stuff that has been ironed out haha

If your flashing cm14.1 based ROMs then you would need to flash correct firmware which would be in installation instructions or help threads but oos stock based ROMs will have everything included
