Hey XDA World,
I just bought (3) AT & T Note 4 devices off ebay, stating to be factory unlocked & for use on GSM networks (such as T-Mobile USA)... I have (2) questions.
# 1 - How do I get rid of the AT & T Boot sequence / firmware on the device.. I really want either T-Mobile, or International screen
#2 - How do I get Lollipop updates without locking the phone ? Can I get them via OTA on T-Mobile network ??
Sorry for the newbie questions, but want to make sure I do the right things to avoid an expensive mistake. Thanks in advance for the reply
Thanks,
Rick
Question 1. These phones are unrootable at the moment so know messing with system files and it's possible that they will never be rootable.
Question 2. I doubt you will get lollipop update ever unless you put AT&T Sim in the phone. Updates are carrier specific and AT&T OTA will never complete without there Sim. It will error out every single time.
Good luck

Hi,
I am very new to android and reading lot of posts online but saw mix response, so posting it here for more clarity.
I got LG G2-sprint version rooted phone from one of my frnd in USA. The phone is working good with Vodafone India. I have below mentioned queries
- If I factory reset the phone,
1) will it lose the rooting?
2) will it get locked to sprint and I lose to connect to Vodafone India?
- I see update available notification. If I update the phone, will it get locked to sprint and I lose India operator connectivity?
- I Can not see GSM only mode for 2G only use (just to save battery consumption by 3G at times). Is there any way. I network settings I see only 4 options (Global, LTE/CDMA, CDMA, GSM/UMTS).
Pls help.
first of all, questions dont belong in the the development area.
2nd, factory reset shouldnt cause you to lose root, however it may not place nice. (i remember bricks from lg optimus days)
3rd, i wouldnt take any updates or anything unless you have a backup of everything including apns and all the apn settings. if you factory reset, it will try to go through sprints hands free activation.

If you got it from your friend in US, who might have been unlocked the phone directly through Sprint then you are good to go, you don't need to worry, if he hasn't got it unlocked through Sprint then search Sprint Development section you will find information how to unlock it. But factory reset does brake Root(in other words you will loose root) & secondly, while you are on root DON'T EVER UPDATE LG G2. Otherwise you'll have a soft brick.

Thanks brothers for your response. I again got two different answers
1st one - Factory reset will not break the rooting
2nd one - Factory reset will break the root.
One query is still unanswered

Hi Team.. pls help...on GSM ONLY setting with LG G2 Sprint version. I simply can not see GSM ONLY mode in network/mobile settings
Haven't received a reply, so I'm updating my question with some new information.
I used Sunshine & am now rooted & s-off.
However, I still don't know what ROM I'm supposed to use:
- My HTC One M8 is a branded Verizon phone, but I've been running it successfully on MetroPCS
SO:
- Do I use a T-Mobile ROM (MetroPCS was purchased by TM and I believe my LTE & 4G comes from TM network)?
- Do I use a Verizon ROM?
Thank you in advance,
Hello,
I purchased an unlocked HTC M8 branded Verizon and have successfully been using it on MetroPCS' LTE network.
I'm considering a different ROM in order to:
- Remove all the Verizon bloatware
- Get as close to Android as possible (I'm dependent upon all the Google apps, gmail, hangouts, calendar, etc.)
- Hopefully get a working FM Radio
From all the threads/replies, I still have not been able to figure out which ROM I'm supposed to use:
- Since my phone is Verizon branded HTC M8, do I have to use ROMs developed for Verizon?
- Which ROM would get me closest to my goals?
Thank you,

Answers to my question
Okay, here's what I had to do to get my Verizon M8 which (thanks to Sunshine!) is s-off and unlocked and rooted to run lollipop (5.01).
1. So the good folk at therootninja.com were able to answer my question and they told me that I have to use Verizon ROMs.
2. I used these instructions to upgrade my phone to 5.01: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2727831
3. There are 2 issues I've encountered:
A. My mobile data says "disconnected" and no matter what I've tried, can't get it work.
B. Smart screen security (so my face can unlock my phone) does not work
Does anyone know how to fix "mobile disconnected"? Here's what I've tried so far and doesn't work:
- Used different combinations of APN that I found posted in this forum & via Google searches
- Recovered to my previous version (4.4.4), copied down the APN settings, re-recovered 5.01 and used the settings;
- Factory reset & put in the APN settings
At this point, I'm back to running 4.4.4 because I need my mobile data to work and my next step might be to go back to 5.01 and take the phone to MetroPCS and see if they can get it to work.
I honestly don't know what to do & would appreciate some help from this community.
Thanks in advance,

Some more answers
Okay, so today I restored to my last 5.01 image (twrp backup) and walked into the MetroPCS store.
Here is the APN info the gal, Tiffany, input which worked(!!):
Name: metro pcs
APN: fast.metropcs.com
MMSC: http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
That's it, nothing else. I left the store estatic, drove home and when I clicked the menu, Mobile Data>GSM/UMTS Options, I reviewed the settings, BUT... when I exited the menu an automatic save was done and I lost my mobile data.
After much futzing, to include deleting the APN info & adding a new entry with the same info, I've found that by selecting LTE/legacy 3GPP mode in preferred network, I'm able to get mobile data working again. Go figure! :-?
In any case, the only final two things which are not "perfect" are:
1. Unrecognized SIM error (@DOTT suggested an xml file to edit)
2. Smart lock does not work, facial recognition never appears.
Hopefully someone will read this post & provide a reply. To date, I've submitted many questions and have not received many replies (2).
Getting a Verizon rom to work on another carrier is pretty easy. Since you are s-off you could use qpst to unlock the bands needed to get 3G and 4G working for MetroPCS. If you cannot get data to work, try a Verizon rom from the Verizon section. Verizon phones and Sprint phones have odd mount points,so flashing a rom for a different phone is not recommended. I know from experience on my m7 that a Verizon cannot be Co vetted to another variant. I don't know if the m8 is the same story as I have an AT&T branded converted to T-Mobile for the m8.
---------- Post added at 10:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:59 AM ----------
Long story short: try the Verizon m8 section instead of this one for help please. The people in this section have the T-Mobile branded m8 and yours is different.
I purchased a G4 h815 with hopes of unlocking the bootloader. It turned out to the the giveaway USA variant so LG will not allow bootloader unlock. Since it was still on 5.1 I was able to put a rooted 5.1 stock build on it using Low Effort Root thanks to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/...zw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765/page64. My question is where do I go from here? If I put a non-rooted MM ROM on it will I be able to continue upgrading the ROM or will that be a dead end? Should I put a stock ROM on it that will be able to receive OTAs from LG? If so which one do I need in order to guarantee that I can get OTAs? If it is not possible to retain root, how can I insure that I can at least have tethering available? I am not new to rooting and ROMing but I am new to locked bootloaders and new MM security issues. I am a net10 user (AT&T network) since that is the only good signal in my area. I bought this phone for the superior camera, micro sd slot and general good value in a used phone but I fear that it is at a development dead end. Any insights, suggestions or resources that anyone can point me toward. I have searched extensively in these LG4 forums and elsewhere without seeing these issues directly addressed. My next step would be to give up on LG and go with a phone that allows development like an HTC One M9.
Thanks in advance!
Hello,
I live in Korea and not an AT&T carrier user. So, I have never received AT&T's OTA.
I tried to connect my Galaxy S7 Active to Samsung Smart Switch, but Samsung Smart Switch says my phone's firmware is the newest version.
My phone's baseband version is G891AUCU1APE7, and build number is MMB29M.G891AUCU1APE7.
Am I unable to update my phone forever?
I want to update my phone's firmware.
I desperately need your help...
Thank you.
ATT only updates there phones OTA... you have to be on the att network to get it to update.

Given that they allow unlocking of the device, that is a ridiculous policy. I can only hope that someone will be able to download the image so that we can use odin.
looking on the S6 Active thread, they find the update downloads on AT&T site, not sure how ?? you can easily find out WHAT update is the newest ..
then either flash via Odin, or 'side' load it ...
but i couldnt find out how they were getting the links from AT&T site to download direct ..
Updating outside USA
in order to update this device outside of USA you should get a At&t SIM card (whit active account), put and seek for updates and will work, I made it a couple of hours and I was able to update.....All this thanks to a friend who lives in Usa and came to visit my country and lend his sim card to do the test ...
Do AT&T have such things as pre-paid sim cards? And could I activate one outside of the USA?

It exists and is called GoPhone, only you would have to do it through some friend or trustworthy person who lives in the USA and can buy it and send it to your country ... is what I will do for the next updates
(Was a scam site, sorry)
now we have these phones rooted, could people in the US with a OTA updates, pull /dump the updates
for us people outside US to flash via Odin ? ...
I'm looking into purchasing this device but have second thoughts due to firmware update availability (not to mention custom ROM support).
Anyway, related to the topic above, I have an AT&T prepaid GO Phone SIM but it is already deactivated/expired. Can I use this old prepaid SIM to update the device firmware outside US?
Side question, what is the difference between SM-G891 and SM-G891A? I see it often when looking for this device.
Thanks.

Hi aalam .. did you face any issues with update using Odin .. I want to update my device but I'm afraid that I might brick it in the process .. this is not the first time that I update a device using Odin but normally it's just one file and I never needed to use the pit file.
appreciate if you can tell me the status of the device after the update ..

Hey everyone,
I'm new to flashing phones but have experience flashing other hardware; still, I felt it prudent to ask for some guidance on this being my first attempt:
I have a Straight-Talk phone which is active and working with 4G that I would like to swap the SIM over to use in my Galaxy S10+ from Verizon.
Swapping the SIM without flashing limited the functionality to be contingent on WiFi; 4G would not work correctly.
So I suspect I'll need to flash with unlocked firmware to get it to work properly.
I have downloaded the G975U1_SAU_1.zip which is what I think I'll be needing to pull this off, as well as the latest available download of Odin (3.14.1).
Before I get started, I'd just like to ask some Questions:
Should I leave the intended SIM (Straight-Talk) in the S10+ (Verizon) while I'm flashing, or insert it after the flashing?
Am I using the correct firmware to flash this Verizon phone to work with Strait-Talk? (United States regions)
Also should I back up the intended SIM in some fashion before proceeding with this process (if so what software if any would be advisable for this?)
Is there anything I need to watch out for?
Am I on the right track for what I'm attempting to do?
Thanks in advanced for any help! :highfive:

Insert SIM after flashing. You need the current U1 firmware from sam mobile. You also need the patched version of Odin that's floating around the forums here. No need to backup your SIM, but using Odin will reset your phone to brand new. Nothing that I can think of, you just put the correct Odin file in each slot and hit go. Seems like you're onto it, you need 3 things which are patched Odin, latest firmware, and I think phone drivers so your PC recognizes the phone. Should be able to find these on Samsung website or other parts of the web.
Thanks for the support!
After your encouragement, I rechecked my firmware made sure to acquire the USB Drivers from Samsung.
Successfully flashed the phone and its now working as intended!
:victory:
I used the Frija tool mentioned here to make sure I had the right files.
And the Driver install came from here.
Thanks again for your support! :highfive:

No problem man, glad to help. Good you posted links too so others can do the same if they're having issues.
Absolutely!
Anything I can do to help pay it forward.
I should also mention I got my CSC code from the list posted at
Droid Views dot com /how-to-change-csc-in-samsung-galaxy-phones/
(Won't let me post the outside link given that I'm new)
The code was required to use Frija to download the correct firmware.
(The 4GB download averaged at 2.5MB/s)
Here is the list I saw on the aforementioned page; I used XAA
Code:
[LIST]
[*]ACG – Nextech/C Spire
[*]ATT – AT&T
[*]CCT – Comcast
[*]LRA – Bluegrass Cellular
[*]SPR – Sprint (CDMA)
[*]TFN – Tracfone
[*]TMB – T-Mobile
[*]USC – US Cellular
[*]VMU – Virgin Mobile USA
[*]VZW – Verizon
[*]XAA – USA (unbranded/unlocked/default)
[*]XAS – USA (unbranded/unlocked)
[/LIST]
Random questions:
If you start with a Tmobile GM-S975U that is carrier unlocked (got unlock code from tmobile)
Will it work just fine with straight talk? If not Does changing the CSC code work, and to which code?
Is different firmware required? like U1?

The U1 software for the S-10 plus is strait from Samsung and has no carrier bloat. All US S-10 pluses are the same, no matter who the carrier is. That means you can flash any vendors rom as long as you don't go backwards on the bootloader version. The phone gets set up by the simm card installed on the first boot. The good things about the U1 software is there is no vendor bloat and your updates come straight from Samsung. Don't forget, you have to us the customized Odin to flash with.
Deatailed info and Odin link can be found here. https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/how-to/guide-g975f-flashing-megathread-faqs-t3936704
Thanks for the reply. Should straight talk just work? My friend says data isn’t working on tmo firmware. What firmware and Csc code would work with them?
curious, do mobile Hotspot work, or is carrier still able to block it?
