Play ripped DVD (video_ts) using Kodi on FTVS? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just discovered Kodi and have it running on my FireTV Stick. .Avi and .Mkv play perfectly, streamed from a shared folder on my Windows PC. I hoped to also share a directory with a few subfolders containing DVD rips. But I cannot see anything in the folder. My guess is that Kodi doesn't know what to do with the contents of each video_ts folder.
Can this be done? Am I overlooking something ovious? Is there an add-on that I need to accomplish this?
Thanks for any guidance.

You should go to the source. Try these: http://kodi.tv/, http://kodi.wiki/, http://forum.kodi.tv/.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked out the Kodi specific forum which led me to try converting the video_ts folders into .isos. Kodi sees and plays them perfectly!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

Kodi has its supported video formats like MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.263, MPEG-4 SP and ASP, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), H.265 (as from Kodi 14) HuffYUV, Indeo, MJPEG, RealVideo, RMVB, Sorenson, WMV, Cinepak, but VIDEO_TS is not one of them. You need transfer to Kodi accepted files like MKV, and then stream movies to play with Kodi via network. BTW, ByteCopy is the tool I used to save all my DVD to MKV.

kodi will play ripped dvd files if you go to video, then select files (not add ons) then locate the video ts folder, then select the first video ts.ifo and the entire dvd will play. you can also play individual vobs also

How do you covert and add ripped dvds to dash?

I have ripped movies from dvds and converted them to mp4 (320 X 240). I then added them to my storage card through windows media player. When I play the movie on my phone using wmp or tcmp, the audio is good but the video is choppy and blurry.
Can anyone please give me advice or point me to a source that may help.

You need DVD wizard............!
I use Clone DVD mobile myself works great. Once you get it installed open it up and click on the + next to other devices. select windows smartphone click next, click the button next to DVD video files and browse to the dvd or Video_TS folder on your hard drive, do any editing there you want or not, click next, click next again, under resolution select 320x240, under enter file name to write click the button and browse to where you want to save the output file, under label put the name of the movie, under letterbox try the 3 settings to see which one you like best and hit go. When its done copy it over to your storage card on your phone with active sync explorer and use TCPMP player or Windows Media Player to watch the movie. The finished file size runs from 400mb to 650mb depending on the movie length. I was very impressed with the quality of the movies on my dash. I'll have to give DVD Wizard a try first I've heard about it. Anyways hope this helps.
Converting ripped DVD's to run on a Dash
Hi,
I tried the trial version of Clone DVD Mobile but got terribly out of sync audio/video also a lot of chunky replay. I wrote to their tech support and got pretty good responses from one of their staff, but the end result was that it didn't work. At first we blamed the retention of the original 29.97fps as too heavy for the Dash's meager processor, but even when I edited the ini file to transcode at 15fps the problem continued.
I have copy of Womble Mpeg Video Wizard DVD on my machine which I generally use for editing TV shows I have recorded to my hard drive before burning to DVD-RW's for watching in the living room.
I poked around with it and it would allow me to transcode the .Vob files to mp4 files for an iPod @ 15fps. That worked like a charm. then just number the files sequentially so they play in the right order.
Basically any video editor or transcoding software that will allow you to convert a .vob file (found by exploring the DVD) to an ipod format will work
Good luck
i havent converted one in a while but i use dvd fab decrypter 4 platinum. which has the option to rip file from dvd to mobile. Then if i want to stetch a widescreen image to it fills the whole screen, i use pocket divx encoder
BTW... there's also a dvd fab mobile edition thats available too!

Have not tried it but here's one
GAOTD is offering a free one today...
Not sure how well it is but worth a try.

Great DVD to movie converter: http://handbrake.fr/ and free!
CorePlayer plays my 368x208 H.264 PSP movies on my Dash. Great.

MX Video player streaming mkv files

I discovered that MX Player will stream H.264 encoded files with AC3 audio from Windows shares I can browse to with ES File Explorer (it will stream most other video files as well).
The only thing is, the device doesn't recognize mkv as a file extension for video, so it won't even let me choose a program to open the file. If I simply rename the extension to mp4, it will stream on MX Player smoothly, without any issues with frame skips or audio. Even with the mp4 extension, the stock video player will not play them. If I copy the files to the device, the stock player plays them without a problem.
On my OG Galaxy Tab, mkv files are considered video. Stock player will not stream them, but MX Plyer will. However, it's so slow and skippy that they're unwatchable.
Is there a way to associate mkv files with video? I don't really want to have to rename the file extension every time I want to watch the video.
ETA: Okay, I figured it out. If you long press on the file in ES File Explorer, you can Open As video. It will not play HDTV .ts files smoothly, however.

It's a really simple thing actually, assuming that you're using windows.
1. Place your MKV's that you want to watch all in the same folder.
2. Right click the folder and click properties.
3. Go over to the sharing tab and click share.
4. Type 'Everyone' in the box at the top and click add. Make sure to set the permissions to read, not read and write and click 'share' at the bottom of the window.
5. Go on your KF and install ES File Explorer.
6. Open the app. In the top left there will be a little box. Click it and select LAN.
7. Hit your menu button and select New Server.
8. Enter the IP address of the computer that you're streaming from. Do not enter a domain name. For the username and password, use what you use on your computer to log in. Tap okay and viola!
Make sure that you have a video app installed that supports MKV. I'd Recommend using Mobo Player if your MKV's are 10-bit and MX Player for everything else. I hope that this helps you

[Q] Is the Fire TV right for me? Will it do what I want/need?

back ground... For years I have used the native file play back capibilities of my LG BD390 and LG BD570 bluray players to connect to windows file shares, and play back video files (AVI, Mp4, MKV, M2TS and others). Basically, I setup a shared folder on my PC, put my media files in it, and used the menu on the BD's to connect to the share and play the file. No DLNA, no transcoding on the fly, etc.
I want to add that ability, along with netflix and amazon instant video, in two other rooms, but all the bluray players I can buy locally use DLNA now. There are some I can get mail order, but they are more expensive too.
If it matters, most of my MKV's were made using BD-Rebuilder or VideoReDo TVSuite. Some do have DTS, others DD5.1. The M2TS files were made using my Sony HDR-SR11 HiDef camcorder and my Hauppauge HD PVR (1212).
Output would be HDMI to a TV. If it works well enough, I'd get one for the basement too (where I'd hook it to a receiver via optical audio).
I know the Fire TV can be setup to do Amazon Instant and Netflix. But can it be setup to replace the BD's (minus bluray/dvd playback of course). To play those files without having to transcode, or use a DLNA server too? Could I possibly use Rhapsody too?

The Fire TV currently does not natively support playing videos of any sort from a shared PC folder. I am not aware of any "official" apps that do it either. By "official" I mean apps you can download from the Amazon appstore which display traditionally in the Fire TV "app" section. That said, there is XBMC (xbmc.org). XBMC runs beautifully on the Fire TV. You have to sideload the app, which is a simple process and does not involve rooting. The biggest disadvantage to XBMC over an "official" app or native solution is how you have to launch XBMC on the Fire TV. Instead of just going to the "Apps" section on the home screen, you have to dig down into a few menus. Specifically, you have to (from the homescreen) navigate to Settings > Applications > XBMC > Launch. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's worth mentioning. There are ways to make launching XBMC easier, but they are a bit of a hack involving other sideloaded android apps.
With XBMC you can do everything your BD players could do. HDMI and Optical audio are available on the Fire TV. Multiple options for getting to your media over the network are available. No transcoding or DLNA necessary. MKV's play fine. DTS and DD5.1 get passed through correctly. I've never tried M2TS files myself, but I would be surprised if XBMC couldn't play them. If you provide me a link to a M2TS file, I'd be happy to try it out for you. There is no official Rhapsody app. You can sideload the Rhapsody app for Android, but you will have to use a mouse & keyboard plugged into the Fire TV to use it. I would expect Rhapsody will make a Fire TV app eventually since they already have a Kindle Fire app.
@fireTVnews.com thank you for the reply. Sorry I got a little side tracked.
it sounds very tempting
Samba player
Another apps are (sideloading only):
Dice Player - very nice, but has no good support of FireTV remote.
File Manager HD + MX Player - 2 apps, that's only minus.

Can I stream Videos from my NAS?

Hello,
I dont know anything about Fire TV, but I am very interested in it!
Can I stream mkv files (x264 codec) and Blu-rays from my NAS to Fire TV?
Have you looked into Plex? Go to plex.tv for more info.
Damn straight YEAH...If you plan to get the AFTV chances are you will install XBMC/Kodi - all you have to do is use Samba (or whatever your share is) and add your NAS disks to your video sources...done.
If you don't want/need XBMC (are you kidding me? ) then use BSPlayer to play videos from the mapped drives...or use ESFile Explorer to map the drive then open the video with...any player you choose.
You have plenty of options, I would not consider Plex if you don't need it for streaming/transcoding. Why would I run a PC if I have a small/quiet Media Center.
