[Q] First Time Rooting - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My G3 is running on lollipop and I'd like to root it using Towelroot, (never done anything like this before) do I have to return it to kit kat first though, not sure how to do that either lol, the real reason I'd like to root it is because I've got the quick circle case and I've seen some brilliant watch faces on xba forums that I'd like to use, my phone is a D855 and V20H version.

You can't directly root on stock lollipop (yet). You could flash a pre-rooted stock version though.
Also, if you go back to KK and root, flashing lollipop will remove root.
So here are your options:
1. Flash a pre-rooted stock (or custom) lollipop ROM.
2. Go back to KK (stock on custom, there are guides on here on how to do so) and root.
Either way, make sure you have a good backup.

I tried it. There is some problem between img-files and Lollipop. Flashify didn't do it.

[Q] How to root LG G3 D855 on Lollipop.

I was wondering if there was some method for rooting the LG G3 on Android 5.0 (Lollipop). I've searched far and wide on the internet but have found nothing so far. I did see that there were methods for the Nexus devices but nothing for LG.
Would like this as well. I thought I could live a while without root.. Seems like I just can't. :crying:
I think that you can find already rooted lollipop version on the forum.
For now, i nowhere found any root options.
Sent from my LG-D855
now it's impossible to root lollypop via purpledrake, ioroot or other programs but you can flash a rooted bumped rom.
I'll wait for this.
Same situation here.
Planned to use the pre-rooted lollipop but to use it you need twrp on the phone. To get twrp you need first root. So its a dead end, a points on b and b points back on a, both needing the other present first.....
Maybe if you flash an older kdz, root it with any of the previous methods, then get twrp on the phone and then flash the pre-rooted lollipop. Im just gonna wait for a lollipoproot without twrp needed.

I am on 5.0 and tried purpledrake (since i used it with 4.4.2), but it did not work, i also tried Stump and got an error too. With 5.0 the structure has changed and the methods for KK are different to Lollipop. So far, even with Nexus, the only way to root is through bootloader/kernel.
Hopefully soon we will see a method that can bypass this.
This is the method that works on the d855 by skin1980 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-lollipop-rooted-rom-skin1980-t2936022

Yup, thats the reason why i downgraded it to KK. Downgrade, root and you can install rooted L.

Does that work then? I'm on Lollipop 20a on the D855. If i install the KK kdz, will it make the phone rootable again? I read something to do with the boot loader not reverting back to how it was before lollipop

Use this guide to downgrade http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089
(you can flash almost any KK KDZ, v10x of course, but make sure it's for your device)
Root it with your preferred root method (i prefer Purple Drake)
BUMP it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2900614
Now you can flash the bumped roms you'll like. Just make sure, it's for your device.

[Q] Correct way of having stock lollipop + root

Hi,
on tuesday I, will get my G3 (should be d855, as im in germany) and obviuosly I wan't to have root.
As it seems to be a bit tricky on the G3, I want to make sure that I got the correct way of achieving that now.
1. As it will be new, i think it should still have Kitkat, if it won't, i have to downgrade.
2. Use PurpleDrake to root it.
3. Use Flashify! to flash TWRP 2.8.4.0
4. Flash bumped Stock v20F and SuperSu via TWRP
5. Be happy to have stock lollipop + root
Can i do it like that or am I something missing?
Thanks

Step 1, 4 and 5 are impossible to do with Lollipop. Stock Lollipop can Not be rooted. You`ll have to flash a Lollipop custom rom after step 3.

Puuh, alright, so if we replace "stock" with "bumped stock", then everything will work like i wrote in #1?

[Q] Can i still root and flash if I update to 5.0?

Hi I have a stock M8 and I just saw that there's a new OTA update for Lollipop. I've been meaning to root my phone and flash a custom ROM because I've felt that it's been lagging a bit lately.
However, I'd also like to try Lollipop and if it fixes my lag issues, then maybe I won't bother with rooting and flashing (i'm lazy lol).
I just wanted to know if I can still root if I updated to the OTA update or if I should root it and not do the update? I'm just most concerned about battery life and speed...I like Sense UI so I don't need a fancy rom. Is there a big difference between in performance and battery life between stock and custom, especially with the new Lollipop?
I haven't tried it yet, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. HTC will still unlock the bootloader, and you can still flash a new recovery. Shouldn't be an issue.
Yes, you can root. I came from 4.4.4 stock to lollipop stock via OTA, and could still flash TWRP and SuperSU.

Oh great thanks! I was reading this website and I was wondering if rooting on 5.0 vs 4.4.4 was any different in terms of the files used? For example for 4.4.4, you need the SuperSU-v1.65.zip. Does that work for 5.0 or is there a newer version out there? I'm using a Mac. Ugh I wish the all in one kit was on Mac too.

I didn't use a tool. I previously used HTCDev to unlock the bootloader, then flashed TWRP via fastboot. Afterwards, I rebooted into TWRP and installed the SuperSU zip.
Aside from the SuperSU (Thanks! I'm so glad i asked), anything else I should know about rooting and flashing on 5.0? I'll just use that previous guide along with your updated file if there's nothing else.

E98020H issues.

I just got this phone today and it came pre installed with 4.4.2 firmware. Now I can root it which is not the issue. the issue is no matter what I use, I cannot install custom roms. freegee does not work, I can use CWM via g pro kitkat but installing anything always results in an error 7.
what are my options considering this?

Which method did you use to root the phone? It's said that stock 4.4.2 can't be rooted correctly. The best thing to do, if you want to go through the trouble, is to flash back to the stock JB, which is v10g if you're using e980. Follow the guide line giving in the posting below, and you will get the best result.

That's why because towel root and freegee doesn't work on stock 4.4.2. I think you have to use universal root and then flash cwm6.0.47 to give you both recovery and unlock the bootloader. Flash back to JB is much better approach .

I did. I am on 4.1.2 and I used kingroot as opposed to towelroot, and used freegee to install 6.0.47. I grabbed CM11 from the website, went to flash it and was hit with an error 7.
Something may be wrong when you flashed back to JB, is it booting normal? You install busybox too right?

how to root and install a good stable rom

Hi ,
I am new here , I have a lg g3 d852 ( Canadian version ) on rogers network. I am currently on the lolipop 5.0.1 and this sucks. The phone lags and the battery drains quick. I was just wondering if I could get some input on how to install a good rom which is stable , no lag and good battery . I dont want to mess up the phone. I guess i need to back up my data first , then root the phone and then install a new rom. I was thinking just to got back to kitkat 4.4 but is there a better rom right now. any suggestions would be great thanks

Yeah okay... So if you want a new ROM proceed with rooting your device, you have plenty of guides around, since you are on lollipop follow with installing benders autorec (http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/apk-flash-twrp-autorec-thanks-to-t3081396), flash TWRP with it, flash new ROM.
Or solution two without installing bedners autorec: restore to kitkat via kdz, root, flash bumped twrp for your device.
For custom ROMs I would recommend you Blisspop. UI interracition is flawless, the moment you click something, you get it, no lag.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-blisspop-v2-0-ls990-t3022685
For stock based ROMs I would recommend you Cloudy. It has laggs on UI same as the stock one, but it's debloated and pretty much better then stock one in my experience.

Happy flashing and best of luck. DO backups! Always!

What have you tried already?
I suggest this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-lg-firmwares-kitkat-lollipop-t3056951
If you failed with every root method you found here on xda what you could do is revert to older firmware via kdz, which wont be patched and you will be able to root your device.
revert to stock
hi , i dont know what the stock rom was, when i turned on my lg g3 for the first time , just started to update the android software. I was thinking to downgrade to 4.4 kitkat, but dont you have to root the phone to downgrade.
Any links to downgrade from 5.0.1 lollipop to kitkat 4.4 or 4.2. , so from there i would follow the instructions to root the phone . any suggestions would be great thanks
