Hi all,
I've kind of backed myself into a corner here after a bit of "experimenting"
I just purchased an S4 SGH-M919, came with stock 4.2.2 Jellybean.
- Opened it up and rooted it via auto-root + Odin.
No issues.
Then instead of manually flashing a rom, I downloaded a play store app called 'Recovery Tools', and tried to flash TWRP onto the phone.
-Stuck at Samsung screen with blue 'booting recovery...' forever.
I then (stupidly?) tried to flash 4.4.2 onto the phone. *not sure if this is stupid because I read T-Mobile has an unlocked bootloader?
So flashing 4.4 T-Mobile Galaxy S4 Stock Firmware (4.4.2 - M919UVUFNB4) PASSES with odin, but the phone is still 'messed up'.
I can access recovery mode, but the phone will not boot past the 'Samsung' logo, and even after a factory data reset and deleting users.
I've also tried flashing back to 4.2.2, and odin fails.
Please help I can't afford another device and I'm now phoneless. Not sure where to go from here and could really use some direction..
Just adding that I think this happened because I accidentally flashed the most recent version of TWRP which doesn't work on the s4.
At this point I can't get any stock ROM to load.
Any idea folks? Any guidance greatly appreciated here..
You might want to try installing one of the cm or aosp based jflte roms. they seem to load easier. After that you can try another rom if you need to. Make sure you are giving it enough time to boot up the first time after a flash. It can commonly take 10 minutes for a stock touchwiz rom to load first time around. Edit: or just odin the stock nk2 firmware from here and start over. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile/general/firmwares-official-mdl-mk2-nb4-t2816508

Screen just goes black, IF it gets past 'Samsung' logo, depending on what build I'm flashing. I was once able to get all the way into setup, then the phone completely went black again. Pretty sure it's not a hw issue because the phone was working fine until I started all of this.
Can I just load a jflte rom via Odin? That's about all I'm able to do currently.
At this point I would odin nk2 firmware. after that odin twrp.

Okay Ultra, appreciate your advice - I'll try this now.
To confirm - after flashing nk2, should the phone be able to fully boot? Or will I have to twrp first before I can expect it to fully boot?
Thanks again
It will boot without twrp

Make sure you are using a very good condition usb cable. I've had some serious odin frustrations due to a poor usb cable

That worked. Thanks so much!
Now I've already rooted with cf-auto once again, I shouldn't have any problem loading TWRP now right?
Right. Should be good to go
Stay away from twerp, use CWM it's more reliable and it won't brick phones. Those extras cooked into twrp make it flaky.
Pp.

Would anyone confirm if to flash via Odin from 4.4.X to 4.2.2 would require the OP to first flash the bootloader from a 4.4.X bootloader to a 4.2.2 bootloader?

Read the first post. He odined 442 to it. You cant go backwards. After that point it is best to just update to the latest complete firmware bootloader and all, just as he did and succeeded.

Everthing over 4.3 has knox bootloader. and prevents downgrading. However i don't know why anyone would want to run 422 these days. The phones run smoothest with the latest nk2. And everyone overreacts about the m919 knox bootloader.

Indeed, however if someone strongly preferred to downgrade from 4.4.2 (M919UVUFNB4) to 4.2.2 (M919UVUAMDL) would they need to first flash the 4.4.2 bootloader with the 4.2.2 bootloader, thereby replacing the 4.4.2 bootloader with the 4.2.2. bootloader, in order to then allow Odin to successfully flash from 4.4.2 (M919UVUFNB4) to 4.2.2 (M919UVUAMDL) - is that correct?

Could some one answer a few questions I have on how to go from rooted 4.1.1 to latest build. I have read and DL'd the zip from the "[LEAK] AT&T 4.3 UCUEMJ2 (Root & Knox versions)" thread and was wondering if the the rom can be loaded directly from CM recovery. Is the new bootloader required or optional?

Have you checked to see if you can get OTA update or update via the latest version of Kies? I was able to update from 4.1.1 to 4.3 with 2 different pre-rooted i747s - one officially via OTA and the other by flashing the same zips you refer to via cm recovery so maybe that answers your question. Before taking the one-way trip to 4.3, however, be sure you are done messing with your phone at the older firmware including unlocking, if required, as you may not be able to go back.

I'm not aware there is any Odin flashable file for 4.3 yet. You may follow the steps in the link below for manual update via CM...
http://www.smartphonejam.com/2013/1...fficial-android43-i747ucuemjb-ota-update.html
You didn't say if you tried the OTA update? If you want to remain on stock, this is always the safest bet. If you are currently on official 4.1.1 you should be able to get this via WiFi with a valid AT&T sim card in your phone.
Me personally would avoid the official OTA update unless you're absolutely sure you want to keep it. Once you take the bootloader MJB you cannot flash any stock rom anymore unless you have an I747M then you can only flash the official 4.3.
I am on the MJ2 leak bootloader and have no issues, running S3Rx with the MJB modem phone runs great, if something happens I can simply flash anything I want to with Odin.

Exactly. I have also stayed away from the official 4.3. I have no idea why so many people around here just insist that their phone be on the latest update. Ok, the ones that had some major issues previously I could see, and yes you're going to have your exceptions whose phones will work just fine on 4.3. But all this 4.3 has done is create even more issues, with no flash-able firmware to go back to when something goes wrong. Some say there is no major reason not to update, but I say that there is no major reason to update, as most never give a reason to why they want to update. I just don't get it, other than these updates have become like new toys, just something new to play with.

shortydoggg thanks for your post and you actually hit the nail on the head. I can't think of reason I NEED to update, I just get bored and like to play. My warranty is up so voiding that isn't an issue and my 4.1.1 runs just fine, but by playing I learn so I like to play. 4.3 has a few nice features but if prevents the phone from being re-flashed then the risks most-likely aren't worth the benefits. I am just doing my due diligence, researching and asking questions. I really appreciate all the input and advice I get from forums such as this so I can make an intelligent decision.

If you really want to try and want it to be reversible you can use the 4.3 leaked MJ2 bootloader if you decide you don't like the 4.3 stuff you can simply Odin back to stock. But if you use the MJB bootloader you cannot.

Thanks. It does get into download mode. Is there an Odin flashable file for the MJ2 and, if so, where can I find this? I'm wary about flashing an older ROM (e.g. 4.1.1) to avoid any further conflicts as I still have the official MJB modem or can this be done safely?
I've tried clearing the system and reflashing but it was the same result or perhaps I wasn't doing this the right way?

I have been told by very reliable sources that you can Odin to an older version safely regardless of modem as long as the bootloader isn't MJB or MK5 so I am pretty confident it is safe. At this point there isn't too much to loose.

Odining to an older ROM is apparently not an option as this is isn't working. Thankfully, the phone is still booting into both download and recovery modes without difficulty so there is hope. I flashed CWM recovery via Odin thinking the problem may perhaps be with TWRP. However, the result was the same and the phone kept booting back into recovery mode rather than to the system. I also tried to see if was the bootloader so I flashed the MJB bootloader as well as reflashed the MJ2 system zip. The flashings were successful so, at least, it's unlikely to be a bootloader conflict but still the system will not boot.
Will greatly appreciate steers from the community on how to get the thing back working. n Thanks

Finally got it back up and running today. Cant be sure what really led to the soft brick but I simply wiped out everything in TWRP mode and then re-flashed the (MJ2) system, modem and kernel zips. This time it worked, I'd tried the same thing before but without the kernel. Now I'm back to the same configuration as before.

If you flash 4.3, you cannot use Odin to go back to a previous version, that's what will brick it. You should flash 4.1.2. It does not have the Knox bootloader.

So, I'm not a complete noob to flashing roms/rooting devices. I flashed cm 11 to my s3, and decided I wanted to go back to stock via Odin. For some reason when I tried to turn on my device it was still showing the cm 11 splash screen and wouldn't proceed any further. It isn't technically bricked. I guess this would be classified as a boot loop to the nth degree. I tired to boot in recovery mode and wipe the cache partition and all user data to the same cm 11 robot taunting me. When I tried the process (flashing stock vi Odin) again to possibly fix whatever might have been a miss, I got the error message on the download screen "secure check fail: sb12." On the download mode screen it also says I am running the official system rom. I don't know what steps I need to take from here to get my phone to actually boot via the stock rom. Has anybody else had this issue or similar? Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.
Is your phone a i747? If you are you running a stock 4.3 bootloader on your i747, you can't use Odin to flash back to stock unless the ROM was specifically designed to be flashed in Odin.
What is shown on the screen in download mode?

I was under the impression the rom I was attempting to flash was indeed intended for Odin. It is the SGH-I747.
The download screen states,
Product Name: SGH-I747
Custom Binary: Custom
System Status: Official
Qualcom Secure Boot: Enable
Warranty Bit: 1
Bootloader AP SWERV: 2
Here is an added bit of fun, in the midst of the process I accidentally checked "Nand erase all," in Odin at one point.
Based on the information provided, your phone is running a stock ATT 4.3 bootloader. The CM11 splash screen is still showing up because the flash did not actually happen. You're lucky your phone was not bricked in the process of using Odin. I recommend not using Odin to flash a ROM that tries to alter the bootloader.
I recommend flashing a custom recovery such as Philz Touch in Odin and flashing a different KK ROM such as Valudis.

I did. It said the the device couldn't be updated, or something to that effect.
Kies will not work without a stock recovery or a rooted phone from my experience.
I would be surprised if kies can restore your phone as ATT never released a full 4.3 stock ROM. ATT only made 4.3 available via an OTA update.

I think i Have bricked my phone I was on the new 4.4 I flashed back to [ROM][RESTORE][5-12-13]Back to UNROOTED Stock with Auto Flash Count Reset .. And then was taking the OTA back to 4.3. I can't get intoo any kind of recovery it brings up the connect to kies screen that says Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue connect to kies. I have tried flashing recovery again with odin to no avail I have also tried flashing the unbrick.tar file that is floating aroung here. I cant get anything to flash everything fails. Looks like your having the same issue I was having. Check the 4.4 update thread about rwilco's modified restore. The one with the sboot or boot.ini in it works. Trust me It works I just got my phone back to 4.3 then back up to 4.4. If u have any questions pm me.

If it's the Samsung screen u need to go into factory recovery and do a factory reset. If u stuck at the note 2 screen u need to use odin and use the modified restore that was posted on the 4.4 update discussion thread. i think i used odin 3.4 or something. Ill turn my computer on to see.

ok to make things short as possible. i dont want this discussion to get out of hand and i will be as helpful as possible. I was stuck on the samsung note 2 screen. i couldnt get past it. tried everything for like 2 days and then rwilco12 posted his modified 4.3 restore on page 50 of the Note II - the 4.4.2 update - discussion thread. all i did was flash that through Odin3 v3.04. just reboot checked on PDA. nothing else. when it rebooted it took a while but it booted to the samsung screen that changes colors. it stuck there so what i did was reboot into recovery mode and did a factory reset. after that it booted into 4.3 no problems.

Honestly I'm not quite sure. What u could do is use billards mc2 then ota to 4.3 and when u reboot if u soft brick again just use the modified restore again. If u want to try it go ahead no harm in trying. i might try it later but chances are its going to fail anyways. Since downgrading from 4.4 is what caused the problem in the first place.

Puffyjello,
I simply flashed the OTA 4.4.2 in stock recovery and rebooted to the update no problem. No new Odin's of MK4 or anything, just flashed the OTA after i used your method to unbrick.
I then Odin'd Philz, flashed SuperSu and now im rooted and on 4.4.2, no problems.
Again, thanks for the help with the 'unbricking'!

Np. And what I thought u meant was going back to mc2 from 4.4 then ota to 4.3 and see if it bricks again. I wasnt sure if it would. Ne ways I'm glad everything's fixed. And I hope anybody that has this problem follows what fixed our phones. you guys take care. Running stock deodexed ne2 and loving it. Can't wait to try out their s5feat rom when they release it.
Does the LJC_Stock_With_Count_Reset[FINAL].zip still work after ota 4.4.2 ?
This to me is the best back to unrooted stock. It resores the LJC PIT, kernel, and modem. Compared to all the other stock roms; I find this one read and writes easier with QPST & CDMA-ws.
Im currently running stock rooted MC2 with stock LJ1 baseband.
In my opinion so far this is the recipe for this phone. Oldest basebands seem to have better battery life. I'm not really sure if the newer modems are actually faster causing the battery to drain faster, or generate more compression and share more detailed information with big brother which would also cause it to slow down.
I have this theory the manufacturers purposely slow peoples equipment down with the OTA after the first couple years to motivate them to buy the newer model flagships that supports the same software more efficiently. maybe I'm just crazy but can someone please try the back to LJC stock unrooted. and let me know if it works better than the back to stock MC2.
plus it could possibly be better doing all the OTA to 4.4.2 from an older stock rom.
i have the s3 att on a 4.4.4 CROM. the baseband says ...LK3. can i use any guide using odin to go back to 4.1.1 stock unrooted and then use OTA updates to get the latest baseband/bootloader/modem? just want to make sure before i do it. i hear this is the safest way and i want to make sure i have met the requirements before i do it so i dont end up having a brick! (not sure if it matters but i have never used OTA updates before)
thanks in advance.
Is your bootloader also the lk3? If the modem and bootloader are lk3, you can use Odin to flash back to stock using firmware from sammobile.com.
Ok, I'm on a similar boat. I tried several AOSP based ROMs, and while I like most of them a lot more than stock touchwiz, they all present the same problems:
- Camera stops working sometimes and I have to reboot device;
- Camera won't record videos in 1080p, even when it's selected in the settings;
- Cannot make video calls on Skype longer than 5 seconds before the call drops;
- Disconnecting a bluetooth media device while music is streaming causes sounds to stop working;
- Tap to pay doesn't work at all;
So because of these problems, I want to go back to stock . My phone is the AT&T version. Currently I'm running Carbon Rom with KitKat 444. The baseband version is I747UCUFNJ1. The latest version of the stock ROM available on sammobile is:
Version: Android 4.1.1
PDA: I747UCDLK3
CSC: I747ATTDLK3
MODEM: I747UCDLK3
Would I be able to revert my phone back to stock with Odin? If not, what would I have to do to revert? Am I stuck with custom ROMs?
I'm pretty new to this so I'd appreciate anybody's help.
If your bootloader and modem is the lk3, you should be able to Odin back to stock 4.1.1.
Ok, how do I find out if they are? And if they are not, do I have any other options?
Download and install the Samsung Info App from the Playstore. Report back here with your bootloader and modem.

Baseband Version:
I747UCUFNJ1
Bootloader Version:

There was no other modem info reported besides this
Modem Board:

someone correct me if i'm wrong.you cannot downgrade bootloader or it will brick. there is no stock rom for NJ1. this link will take you to a stock based 4.4.2 ROM which is safe to flash with the NJ1 bootloader/modem.

Well, that's a bummer if I can't restore stock rom to the phone. So there is absolutely no way of safely downgrading the booatloader?
nope. it will brick your phone if you try to downgrade your bootloader.

Have you tried CM-11-based or TW-based ROMs?

I tried to push that ROM the phone using adb to flash it with ClockWorkMod, but the file is 1.7 GB and the phone always shuts itself down during the push process... So I wasn't able to try that. Also, the instructions say you're supposed to be on UCUFNE4. Are you sure it's safe to flash it on I747UCUFNJ1?

I have tried CM11 and Carbon ROM, which is CM based, both have all the same problems. I haven't tried TW-based ROMS. Do you have any suggestions?
What do you mean by the phone shuts down? Did you try copying the ROM to a microSD card?
Did you notice any bootloader or modem files in the S3Rx 4.0 (11-9-14) ROM? It may not include a modem or bootloader. In step 1 of the flash process, it says "AT&T I747 users should update bootloaders and modem to NE4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...pdate-t2808654 I747M and T999 users need to be on 4.3 firmware or ROM will not boot. "
the link i posted is TW. post #1306 claims is o.k. to flash with UFNJ1.
did not see any mention of bootloader or modem in changelog or in list of 'extra' features.

I reboot the phone in ClockWorkMod recovery. Then I go to the command prompt and type:
Code:
adb push S3Rx_UCUFNE4_AROMA_11-9-14.zip /sdcard/
It starts pushing the file to the phone, but after a while, the phone screen goes black, and I get a "Protocol failure" on the command prompt. After this the power button no longer works, I have to do a battery pull for the phone to work again. The phone has 10 GB of storage left so it didn't run out of space. The USB chord is brand new so I don't think it's that either. It worked fine before when I pushed other smaller roms.
In another question, would this process allow me to downgrade the modem and restore stock rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898
i am pretty sure that since youre on MJ1 , your bootloader and modem have to match.

Did you try flashing the card from an external microSD card?
AT&T never released a stock ROM for the i747 beyond 4.1.1 afaik; therefore, you cannot get back to stock unless you flash an OTA ROM that has been compiled for flashing in Odin.
I do not recommend mixing and matching bootloaders and modems as a mismatch may result in a hard brick.
Downgrading only the modem will not allow you to flash back to stock.

I haven't tried flashing from external microSD card as I don't have one.

So you're basically telling me I'm stuck with custom roms unless I find a 4.4.2 OTA ROM I can flash with Odin (which doesn't appear to exist)?
---------- Post added at 05:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:01 PM ----------
Would it be safe to try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788357
Even though I'm on I747UCUFNJ1 and not on I747UCUFNE4?
Once you upgrade to the 4.3 or newer bootloader on the i747, you are stuck with either custom ROMs or OTA ROMs that have been compiled for flashing in Odin or CWM/TWRP.
You can try flashing the NE4 ROM because it doesn't appear to include a bootloader or modem. The first post says "Prerequisites include a minimum of a 4.3 bootloader and modem.
If you are not on the official 4.4.2 bootloaders and modem then you will need to flash ktoonsez kernel."
Thanks audit13 and mrrocketdog for all the help. I was able to get the AROMA rom installed on the phone. All functionalities lost with AOSP ROMs are back working so that's a plus. Still can't get updates OTA updates but this phone is probably not gonna have any new ones. Still hopeful that lolipop based AOSP ROMs fix the problems I had, but I'm not holding my breath.
