Hi! Its been awhile since i rooted my last android phone (Original Droid). So i forgot how to do everything and it seems like so much has changed.
I currently have Verizon LG G3 and i am planning on giving this phone to my mom who lives in S. Korea and use it under SK telecom (CDMA). But they use Band 5 as their LTE. And from what i know the only way i can make the G3 to use band 5 is through rooting the phone and going under commands.
So my question is, If I root my phone through stump or any other method, would she be able to receive ota updates and apply the updates without the phone going through boot loop?
Or would I be able to root install most stable custom rom that blocks the ota updates but pushes the update for the rom.
Thank you =]
Just dont install TWRP and you wont have bootloop after OTA. Root will be removed
And you need to plug in a Verizon Sim Card for OTA to show up unless you can find a captured OTA package and manually update it yourself using adb
would this phone only be able to get ota through Verizon? Im thinking if the phone is registered under Sk Telecom then it should receive Ota that is being pushed by them. And what is the best method that doesnt install TWRP?
Thank you for the reply.

Yes it only gets OTA through Verizon Sim. If you plug in a SK Telecom sim you will never get the verizon OTA
Root using the rooting tools such as ioroot, stumproot, towelroot, purpledrake
Okay thanks for the clarification

Cant seem to get a concrete answer anywhere. I Sim unlocked my tmobile note 3 and I'm currently running it on the ATT network. Will I get OTA updates from Tmobile still or just nothing at all?

If you're running a completely stock rom (no root or recovery) you will get updates still.

If you are rooted, your phone will attempt to download OTA updates but most likely they wont install and you will lose root. This happens on the S3 and S4... so N3 shoulnt be any different.

If your phone is NOT rooted and if you have the stock firmware in the phone then:
You will only get updates for AT&T if you have an AT&T activated sim card in the phone.
Without a activated Tmobile sim card in the phonoe you will never get tmobile updates.
Good luck!
Thats what I figured, if it is Tmobile, you will get the ATT update, and that might be an issue. I am watching the forums for any post of an OTA, then will swap cards back.
There is no way that tmo phone will accept att ota even with active att sim on it. Ota checks phone model and att ota wont show at all on tmobile phone. You can always download latest update from samsung website
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
So is the simple solution just to use Samsung Kies? I bought a 2nd hand Galaxy S5 and it had been on O2 but unlocked. I'm now using it on EE (I'm in the UK). Will Kies let me do an in place upgrade without having to wipe?
so would my unlocked Verizon Google Pixel phone get the Android 9.0 PIE update when i'm using a MetroPCS sim ?
I've got a Verizon HTC one M8 and I don't live in the U.S., nor do I have a Verizon SIM. Everything about the phone works great, except that i cannot update my phone because I don't have Verizon SIM card.
My question is, If I root the international STOCK ROM on my M8, will I be able to get OTA updates without any problem?
OTAs will not install on a rooted/modded phone. Also, its my strong opinion that once you've unlocked the bootloader, installed custom recovery, rooted, etc. that OTAs don't belong on your phone anyway. At that point, you've enabled your phone to flash anything, why would you want to go backwards and install a stock OTA?
I got this phone off ebay for a deal 330$. My plan was to root and install an aosp rom.
I have rooted the phone but cannot find anyway to install twrp. Seems like all the twrp recoveries and custom roms are for tmobile and international versions
i was not aware when i bought this phone that it would be a us cellular version the ad did not say
anyways what are my options? Is it possible to get an aosp rom on this version of the phone any advice would greatly be
appreciated
Unfortunately there are no options as of now. The bootloader is locked and there hasn't been a workaround discovered for it yet like for other devices.
At best you can root and flash xposed on the phone as long as it has Lollipop, but as it looks now, you won't be able to keep root if you upgrade to Marshmallow.

thanks for the reply, i can stop searching like a fool lol
will i even get the marshmallow update, i have a us cellular version running on att network
The US Cellular model will most likely get MM soon, but if you're on the AT&T network, you won't get the OTA. I'm not sure if you would have to put a US Cellular SIM back in temporarily to get the OTA download, or if you could just remove the AT&T SIM and download it over WiFi. Otherwise, you could just get the kdz when it comes out, plug into your computer and force the update that way.

US991 Marshmellow
Hi Guys,
I am having a real issue here after reading this tread. I recently upgraded to marshmellow but my data stopped working. I cannot get the H+ anymore. I need to go back to lillipop. I am looking all over the internet trying to find out how i can roll back. i even factory reset the phone but is goes back to marshmellow. do you have a clue how i can do it?
I asked around and they directed me to http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/lgup-install-kdz-mm-lp-t3249803
My software version is US99120c.
Can I get help rooting the 10a? Every tutorial I see is 10c and I can''t update mine.

Your rom is not official. As you can see in build number shows. Some weird company name not the samsung build number like "N910PUV2DPK4" etc it should show ike this so it means it was rooted before to make some modifications such as sim unlocking.
If you still want to make sure that your rom is official or custom just go to odin download mode and check binary status and system status if it shows custom then its modified.
Until your rom system is modified you can never apply official ota updates from samsung.
Best way to make your phone fully official is just flash stock rom via odin but your phone may end up sim locked if you are not using sprint sim card and you must activate it via sprint network to unlock it.
so my best suggestions will be just postpone updates and use as the way it is if you are not on sprint network.

Thank you very much for replying.
So if I flash stock rom and I get sim locked, so there is no way to unlock it to work with other sim outside USA?
Second question can I root my phone. Because using root checker it says "sorry root access is not properly installed on this device ". Means my phone is not rooted.
I will appreciate all help. Thank you all in advance
Ok before I start I just want to say I'm a complete noob at android and how it works (got my first android a month ago) so don't get too angry if I say something stupid :/
So I bought an unlocked sprint g8 off of ebay but switched to another carrier called mint (uses t-mobile network) so I'm not sure how the software updates work. I'm aware I won't be getting updates from sprint, but I know that I have gotten 1 or 2 updates from lg since I got it. I'm a little confused as to if the updates from lg are all I need or if they are just security patches, and if there is a way to install sprint updates anyway.
I know I can solve this by unlocking the bootloader and installing custom roms once they start coming out, and on sprint I can enable oem unlock, but there is no way to access fast boot. If I do adb reboot-bootloader (or whatever the command is) it just does a normal restart. If I'm not wrong I should be able to do the bootloader unlock after lg adds the g8 to their supported devices, but I don't know how I'll be able to do this without accessing the fastboot. Recovery mode seems to be incomplete too (I can't use adb in recovery I think the drivers are not installed yet), so I think part of the sprint firmware is still kind of in a beta. So if the not being able to access fastboot and an incomplete recovery mode is a problem with the sprint firmware, will the lg updates themselves be able to solve this? Or is there anything else I'm completely missing?
Sorry if that was a little confusing but any answers would be great!
You will still get software updates. I have a sprint lg g8 unlocked on cricket and yesturday i just recieved the August 1 security software update.
I don't have an answer to your question, but does your Sprint model get VoLTE on Mint/T Mobile? Thinking about buying one.

There is almost a 0% chance LG will let US variants be unlocked. And with the impl lock we cant even crossflash the G8, so yea you are stuck with the sprint rom.
Your phone will update. Received August Security patch yesterday. Use ADB to remove Sprint bloat.
Any way to get WiFi calling to work on mint mobile using an unlocked Sprint G8?
I just received Android 10 update on LG G8. I'm on Total Wireless. The biggest thing is RCS is working now. It's a great update btw.
