[Q] Problem with SD card - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to you all
First, I own this nice tablet s and bought a class 4 Kingston so card and didn't have much trouble until 4 days ago. Nearly every day since, the SD card stop working, and it needs to be formated in order to get it working again. I have copied several music a day videos and played them without any loss or error in them, but then from nowhere, it stops working.
Any ideas of how it can be fixed? I'm desperate cause I need to format it like once or twice everyday.
Thanks for reading.

I had a similar problem with my 32 Gig Sandisk Class 10 card, mine would just not read the card and would need a reboot to fix then it would be good for a few days and happen again. I have since replaced the 32 Gig card with a 64 Gig Samsung class 10 card, so far that card has not had any problems but I have only had it a week. I think the Tab S seems to be picky with certain cards. The 32 Gig card I have in a ASUS MeMo Pad 7 and it is working with no issues.

depends on who/where you bought the sd card from. I have gotten knock off sd cards from ebay before that work like crap causing the issues you have described, so always buy from an official retailer. it may be that the sd card has gotten corrupted in a way that is not repairable as well

When it comes to sd cards (uSD) I have found using this to be the best tool for prepping/formatting and otherwise "fixing" cards. Now keep in mind, if a card is physically corrupted you're SOL but this utility has worked like a champ for me over the years.

[Q] SD card unexpectedly removed

Using the pre-installed stock Samsung Class 2 micro SDHC 8gb
Constantly getting this error from the DHD:
"SD card unexpectedly removed"
Symptoms:
1) Usually happens after installing / removing apps.
2) Tends to re-boot by itself after "hang" after about 10 seconds
Note the following items:
1) USB Debugging = ON
2) SIM card is fully inserted
3) SDHC card is fully inserted
4) Using stock ROM
5) PC Error Checking (bad sector) = No error
6) Have tried to format the SDHC. Result = same error
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot tis ?
Is the pre-installed SDHC card at fault ?
Thanks
Another thing you can try is to check with another card (New or Old)
If it still does it....then there shud be some problem with the card holder unit or something...get it replaced mate
Had the same issue. Think your SD card is broken. Mine was. Couldn't even get it to work on a pc. Tried a new SD card and the problem was gone. Just got out of the Vodafone store. They replaced the SD card under warranty.

I've got EXACTLY the same problem. It's bloody crazy!
I read that the phone may not be able to cope, as it's only a class 2 card - but I don't think that is correct, is it?
I've contacted HTC, and they just told me to take it back to the store and ask them to check it out. I'll probably do that in a week or so.
it just happened to me!! randomly. everything was fine and then suddenly it just failed on me. any clue why?

Bundled Samsung SD cards with the latest OTA update are known to fail, search for more info in other threads here to see if you'd qualify for a warranty replacement.

Been happening to me on the stock Samsung class 2 8gb... anyone encountered any problems changing to a class 4 card?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
when I woke up this morning I couldn't access any of the programs on my sd card (SanDisk 16GB Class 2 SDHC), when I rebooted my desire HD the same thing happened. I tried manually mounting it, rebooting like ten times, inserting, ejecting the card etc, nothing would work.
Can't be the phone just smashed a 16GB card over night :/
YES....!! Gggrrrrr! it just happened to me last night. I rebooted my phone after installing some different Apps throughout the day (as is usual in my Android daily life). then after the phone rebooted about 30-45 seconds later i saw the "SD Card unexpectedly removed", thats strange i thought. Couldn't get past that after about another 4 reboots i removed the SD Card and tried it in a card reader on my PC. similar thing, I could ready the file structure on the WIN PC but then about 30 seconds later the drive disappeared and was no longer available. I then re formatted the card (started the process withing the first 30 seconds) and thought that would fix it. Now neither my WIN PC or Desire can read the card. also tried in Lynx Puppy environment but no go.
I think my 16GB Class 2 card is TOASTED. Was it because it used an Ext4 Partition on the card for the past 7 weeks? I heard some people in the site saying that Ext4 can damage your SD Card...?
Had the same problem - lost all my unbacked-up data. Quite disappointing. Bought a new micro SDHC and hasn't had a problem since.
So it's the SD-Card then?
It's happening to me most of the time and it's really anoying!
Yep time to buy a new one.if your luck and still able to access your old card then get it backed up quick.......before it goes tits up.
Sent with Desire.
Just visited the HTC customer center last week to check on this issue. Seems like its got to do with a bad batch of cards.
They replaced an identical Samsung microsd class 2 8gb card to let me use for a couple of days. Told me that If I was to still encounter the same problem, it could be problems with the card reader chasis, and I'd have to leave the phone with them for a couple of days.
I'm happy to report that I have not had 1 single "SD card removed unexpectedly" since I got the new replacement card.
I highly suggest for people facing the same problem to get their cards replaced by the seller or HTC.

I just have the same problem like yours.
I tried many way and methods, It just can't working fine!!
so I buying another sdhc as sandisk 8G class 4
now I have no problem for two months so far.
I am reasonably to Suspected...
that the problem happends cuz this garbage samsung SDHC!!
Change it now! you'll feel like:[what a wonderful world~]
The "telus" version comes with an 8gig class 4 card but upgraded to a 16gig class 10. No problems either way.
Guess Canada nipped it in the bud
I was going fine with the stock 8Gb card and then I replaced it with a class 10 16Gb card and after about a week it started randomly ejecting. The card worked fine in other devices and can always be read in Windows but I guess it's only time - I have had another card go in the past and it's a real downer.
I'm not convinced it's the card. I've tried uninstalling any suspect apps but it hasn't made much difference.
Formatting the card and replacing all the files kind of works but I have still had one random 'eject' in the last 48hrs since I last formatted.
Actually the problem seems to have started when I re-flashed my current rom - Android_Revolution_HD-4G_4.0_beta4
Wish we could find out what is going on here.
Having the exact sample problem, but with a 16g card that I bought several month ago. I have another 16g card, will swap and see if the problem go.
I had this problem as well
So I formatted the SD Card and had the problem since...
however sometimes, it cant seem to recognise some pictures in the card, so i use SD rescanning app...
Heard someone saying this was caused by an OTA, well I had a warning around 2 days before the SD-Card Un-Mounted saying that the Card was in Read-Me format... anyway 2 days later my SD-Card became un-mounted and then became comepletely useless. I was unable to mount it or anything, going to get my dad to ring up HTC, as we rung my carrier and they said the problem 'had never been reported' which is bull**** as theres enough people here with the problem...

Question about SD-Memory

Hi guys, just a couple of questions about SD Cards.
First off, I've been having issues with mine lately. It's a 16GB Sandisk and I recently found out it was only class 2. When I first bought it, it worked well, never had any problems. But after a few months of installing apps onto it, loading/deleting/reloading large (8 or 9GB) volumes of music it started giving me problems. Now and again I get a Damaged SD card message in CM7 and sometimes while listening to music it will just stop playing and say the card has been ejected. I thought it was the ROM (Wildpuzzle at the time) so I changed, but it didn't help.
Could it be that the card is damaged, or that the data transfer rates have dropped with age to a point where it won't work?
Also, what class would you recommend I buy. Class 10 would be nice but for a 16GB card I might as well buy an mp3 player.
Thanks in advance
Try formatting the card and reusing it before writing it off. It may just work.
As for a new card, Class 4 is good and should fit all needs adequately.10 is definitely overkill.
I had a similar problem recently with a cheap unbranded class 6 4gb card. I was getting random errors and occasionally couldn't transfer data to or from it. It eventually completely died. Worst about it was I was using Darktremor's a2sd. I lost everything and had to start again from scratch. I didn't even have a nandroid backup outside of my SD card. Lesson well and truely learned. Make sure you have a backup of everything you need
Yeah I backed mine up, formatted it but I still get the problems. When they first started I was using DT's Apps2ext, that maybe did some of the damage with formatting and stuff, plus the large volumes of files I kept transferring.
I'm trying to work out if I want another card or if I should just save up and wait for that Samsung Galaxy S Wifi PMP. Need to see the price first. Or a tablet, but I think the Galaxy is all I can afford for now.

sd card suddenly removed ?

Hi guys, I just encountered this problem twice tonight. First, it said "the card is damaged" or something like that then all my photos disappeared (I managed to recover all of them using a recovery software). I formatted and check the card with command promt in windows. Everything was fixed then I put it back to the phone. After a while playing around with it, it said "sd card suddenly/unexpected removed" and again, photos disappeared. I've had this phone for 4 months and never had this problem before. no idea what was going on. I looked this up and it turns out many people used to have this issue with their S3. My card is 32Gb sandisk class 4. Any ideas? right now it's working fine but Im scared that it might corrupt again.
I'm not sure why you formatted it when you put it into your computer, unless it didn't give you an option but i had the same problem happen to me last week and what fixed my problem was I would have my phone's backcover off while tuning the phone on with the microsd card not inserted and after the phone fully boots up then insert your microSD card and it should fix the problem or it did for me atleast, give it a shot.
My s3 still recognized the card. The card was not dead, only the file were corrupted. I formatted it since I thought that would make it "new" again... I also checked bad sectors with windows. Right now it's working fine, I'm just afraid it might happen again and corrupt my photos.
Is class 4 too slow? I have a class 10 SanDisk 32gb but I figured testing it would be a waste of time since I had 4 straight months without problem with this class 4.

When you first put the SD card into your phone months ago, did you format with the phone or the computer? It's always recommended that you format from the phone, before you use it; because it can cause weird bugs down the line. Also, are you running any customs roms or is this happening on stock?
Well I don't remember if I formatted it. I'm on rooted stock JB. I've had this card for 5 months and it has stayed in my s3 since august. There were a couple of times I took it out without un mounting (I didn't know there was an option to unmount it), but that was like months ago. I've done a little search and actually, this is a pretty common thing.

I had the same problem. It would let me view pictures and play mp3's fine, but when I tried playing a flac or video, I would get the same error. I reformatted with android and haven't had a problem since.

It has worked fine since last night. I just reformatted it again by the phone. Hopefully this won't happen again.
Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying (the card brand is Team Group), this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the “Media” scanning process and significantly draining the battery.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card (made in Korea), and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdcardmonitor
I had the same problem with a 32gb SanDisk class 10. Files would corrupt, it would occasionally not mount correctly, and I'd frequently get the SD card is Damaged message.
For me, it seems like it was simply a faulty card, as I have an 8GB and 16GB card that both have worked without issue. I sent the 32gb into SanDisk for warranty replacement.

[Q] Is my SD card slot damaged?

Hello everyone.
I have had this tablet for almost a month and so far, I have loved it. Last week, the micro sd card that I ordered arrived. It's a Toshiba Class 10, 32 Gb. I inserted it, and nothing happened... then I tried again and a message appeared, telling me that the card was being prepared.
After a while, another message told me that the card had been "unexpectedly removed". I tried it on my PC and it worked, but started looking out for a solution and found out a program to format it on these forums. I used it to format the card with FAT and tried again.
This time, the card worked for a couple of hours, then the tablet told me that it had been unexpectedly removed again.
I took it out, used my pc to reformat it, put some files and tried it on an Android based media center. It worked and still works.
So, I went to the store and bought several other cards, and so far, either they work for a couple hours before getting the "unexpectedly removed" error... or they don't work at all.
Here's the list of all the cards I have tried:
SanDisk Class 4, 16Gb
Kingston Class 4, 32Gb

I know, the SD Slot is unusually deep and it takes some time to get the card into. However, I have inserted it until it "clicks" into place, but nothing works.

HTC 10 damaged micro SD card

HTC 10 damaged my micro SD card. Did happen to anyone else?
I listened music form my phone on my way to work in the morning and then, on way back home firstly music didn't play, so I found that card is not recognized by the system even after restart. I have checked it later on two computers with 2 different adapters and no appliance can recognize the card. Branded 64 GB Lexar fast card. HTC wasn't restarted or so, wasn't even hot I kept in whole day in the pocket. I'm not sure what to do, I mean don't want to lose another memory card which I probably buy.
And maybe, by any chance, someone have any idea how to check memory card whether is completely dead?

It's more likely a short life span micro sd card, and this kind of suck always happen once a while.
Don't blame your phone unless other one or two micro sd cards also die in the first two weeks.
Hi, The reason I'm asking is to avoid the risk in the future. If it happens to anybody else I will rather buy some cheaper card.
That memory card was bought for GoPro so I use it for many other apliances without any problem and suddenly it broke with HTC 10. At least I noted it here for statistics.

Cards fail. Cheap cards fail often.
Lesson, buy more than one card and don't recycle them from device to deice.
Another lesson, don't ever buy cheap cards.

lexar isn't usually horrible, but yeah sd cards fail. On the notes of sd cards dying my t3i must have killed my sandisk ultra 2, it couldn't have been the card that died.

The HTC 10 does appear to be finicky with microSD cards. My 128GB Sandisk that worked totally fine on a Galaxy S5 kept giving me problems on the HTC 10. I wonder if the phone is stressing the cards too much somehow (for instance if it is scanning the card too often for media files and you happen to have tons of media content on the card like in my case).
Thank guys for the reply,
I never broke before any memory card and that one was not cheap. Happily I can buy now double capacity and double speed for half of the price which I spend for the last one. I'm planning to buy Lexar 128GB. That card did work perfectly but only few days.
I'm having issues with my card as well. I purchased the SanDisk Ultra 200GB Micro SD from amazon. I put it straight into the phone and ran diagnostics on it to confirm it was a true SanDisk card and its read/write speeds which were in line with manufacturer's specs (88 read/ 14 write). Within the day it was having issues pulling images off the card. All the images saved directly to the card had a grey area or "box" over some portion of the photo that would correct after a few seconds leaving the full picture to view. The images could be sent with no problem but eventually they seemed to become corrupted. I figured it was the slow write speed causing the issue so I replaced it with a new Samsung ProPlus 128GB card (95 read/ 90 write) and the issue still persists. Not sure if anyone else is seeing anything similar.
if your looking for a new one, this one is great. very fast speeds 90mb write 95mb read. bit on the spendy side so hopefuly it was just the card failing and not the HTC 10 eating them
I haven't had any issues with 1000s of files on mine so far, crossing fingers
Same here, Kingston 128 GB micro SD worked fine on my s7 edge. Inserted the same card in my HTC 10 and it was readable for the first hour, after that the card was not recognised by the device. The card wasn't even recognised by my Mac and PC. I'm glad I had my photos backed up on google photos.
My 64gb kingston kicked the bucket in my HTC 10. Last weekend I woke my phone up and it said sd card unexpectedly removed. Card was not readable in any other device.
Got a Sandisk as a replacement as never had an issue with their cards in the past. The kingston only lasted 4 weeks, but I'm putting it down to just a faulty card.
If the sandisk dies too, then I'll be a bit concerned it could be the phone...
Im Using Lexar Pro SDCARD 128gb and havent had issues using it. The card was also formatted as adaptive.

So, there is two of us. There is one only connection - 64gb.
Where is Sherlock?
by [email protected]
You're made me worry. I use SanDisk 200 Gb, it's kinda expensive one.
Worry for what?
I don't have any issues with my HTC10, but I broke a 64gb Sandsik in my Sony X10i, phone just got hot. Shut down, Card didn't work anymore. And another one SanDisk 128gb was in my Sony Z2 when I replaced the back plate somehow the MicroSD got broken.
The 64gb Card had a Lifetime Warranty and the 128gb a 10 year. Not sure how long my 200gb card is now. Think they reduced it to 3years or 5.
But yeah, went to their Homepage, registered the cards. Requested replacement, they sent someone here to pick them up, 5-9days later I got the new Cards via Mail
So yeah, always back Up your important stuff somewhere else and who cares if they fail. It's annoying Yes, but **** happens.
SD cards can fail in ANY device. I wouldn't go as far as saying it failed because of the device. Quality of the cards is what really dictates how soon failing can occur. A knockoff SanDisk failed in a few months while the real one has lasted years for me. I highly recommend SanDisk and Samsung SD cards because I have had no issues with their original products.
EBay and some Amazon sellers have tendencies to sell fake cards so beware.

been using this without any problem 128gb and prior to this i tried samsung evo + 128 and that worked fine....
but as the OP stated it is true that many users using diferent sd cards has been facing issues with htc 10.....
some has issues on some firmware, some on custom kernels, some on different formats so its wise to say that there is something beyond a faulty sd card itself.
in all the custom rom threads you could see sd card issues highlighted at one point or other by mutliple users including devs
I have the same issue, and now i remember this is the second one in my htc 10, first one a pny 128gb worked well for more than one year in my previos s5 and after a month in my htc it failed, i blame the sd card that day and decide to buy an 128gb lexar and today after 5 months it failed, or i have a very bad luck now or my htc is damaging my sd cards.
