But will it wipe my data? I'm using the official sony site instructions to unblock it. I haven't done it yet because I can't risk losing my data.
If it will wipe my data, is there a quick way to back all the data up to my PC and then put it back into my phone?
Additionally, will it wipe my sd card data too? In that case, is it enough to just remove the sd card from my phone and then put it back later?
Thank you for your help. I'm very new to this.

Once it's gone, it's gone.
If you have a backup, restore it
If you don't, why the heck not? YOU'RE SCREWED.
Yeah unfortunately it's gone. Get Titanium Backup from the market and perform a backup. you can set it up to automatically backup any changes, i think.....I haven't tried that option yet. RomManager will backup your current rom if that interests you.
If you can find a way to mount mass storage (which as far as I know isn't possible yet) you can use any number of data recovery utilities to get your data back.
No removable SD card + no USB mass storage is kind of a major fail and my only regret about owning this device...

Caps isn't necessary friend, if they are on your virtual SD card they should still be there. If you've wiped the SD card you can't recover them.

Good job replying to a 22 month old thread.
you can recover data from android phone with android data recovery software, here's a good one: recover files from android phone
hope this helps.
Android Data Recovery can solve your problem of Samsung internal memory data loss easily and effectively. It allows you scan and preview your lost data from internal memory, as well as deleted files from SD card. Contacts, messages, pictures, and videos can be got back without any difficulties, just following the simple steps below. Now, read on and follow us, know how to recover lost data form Samsung internal memory with this magic program.
Coming from my EVO, I am used to wiping my data and caches and whatnot and not having to worry about losing backups because they are in my SD card. Now, I plan to buy this phone which does not have an SD card, but I read that it has a partition that acts like an SD card. Is this true? Also if.this is true will it be wiped when I do a factory restore and data wipe in.recovery, or no? I.plan to back up things like apps and sms through third party apps, and photos .to remain there through multiple roms. What I heard is that all your stuff will sync to.Google, then sync back after factory restore, is this true? Thanks for all the help.
CWM recovery doesn't wipe your virtual SDcard when you do a data wipe to switch ROMs.
How big is the virtual SD card?

Well, as big as the stuff in it lol. Its virtual, it doesn't have to have an arbitrary partition limit to it.

Hello guys,
Soon I want to sell my HOX!
And I want to delete everything on my phone for ever ( So, no body can get my data back by using some applications!) cuz I have very private data and pictures on my phone!
Any ideas!!!
full factory reset and format the sd card
Since you are worried about restoring the data through some app..then you can do one thing fill the sd card again with some random crap and format it.
This should do the job.

I encrypted my TMO S3, thought the extra layer of precaution was great. Now, when I enter my recovery I can't read my SD card, I can only see my 64 gig external. Additional, when I install apps, it says i have insufficient space. I would like to undo this. I have ODIN and I hope the solution isn't "ODIN to stock". Please advise and thank you - hoping for a quick solution that doesn't involve me doing my root all over. Thank you very much.
I wish I had better news for you... Due to the nature of encryption, the only way to undo it - is to wipe everything. You need to format your SD card and do a factory reset. The good news? No ODIN required. Just plug your phone into the computer and back up your SD card, format it while its connected and go into TWRP and factory reset. Encryption is gone and your data is safe.

Hey guy's,
I've wanted to activate root access on my HTC 10 and followed the instructions until to "unlock bootloader".
After I've unlocked the bootloader and restarted my phone it said that android is booting the apps....
after that, i've got an reseted phone, with cleared internal memory + (and thats the main question) my SD Card, which i had formatted as internal storage before with tons of data on it, could not be read anymore.
My phone says, i have to format it again...? But then i'll lose all my data on the formatted sd card?
So before I do that, I've inserted the SD Card into my PC and there two partitions on this card.
So i think all my data is still on the formatted card but the phone won't accept it.
Why it's telling me to format it again (and lose all my data)?
And is there a way to restore my files from the formatted SD card?
Thank you very much!
Chris
Unlocking bootloader always gives you a factory reset for safety reasons. The encryption key used to encrypt the internally formatted SD card is also cleared by doing so.
The reason you get a factory reset is to prevent someone from unlocking your bootloader, rooting it and gaining access to your phone's data.
As far as I know there's no way to retrieve the data from the SD unless you have a complete system backup of your phone.
I'm also pretty sure the phone (and probably the tutorial) warned you that the phone will be factory reset.
Sorry Chris, nothing anyone can do for you.
This is also one of the reasons why I unlock my bootloader when I start using a new phone. That way I can always make a full backup if I want to do something else, say flash a custom rom at some point.

Maybe not the tutorial but i am pretty sure that when you submit for your unlock token on the HTC website there is a warning that the phone will be factory reset.
I just installed a new rom and allowed google to place back some data, settings and apps.
Google kept the encryption key it seems because I can place back my sd card and it works.
I didn't know Google did that, but hey, if you still haven't formatted and backed up at Google, you could try that
