Just noticed recently that in some cases there are differences between the permissions that Android Market app lists prior to installation/upgrade and what local application list/manager provides.
For example, I'm looking at the "Display Shot (light)" app by Webxit in Android Market. I have the most recent version currently available installed - 2.2.8. When I check Menu > Security, I get:
Network communication
full Internet access
Hardware controls
control vibrator
Now, if I look at Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Display Shot
I get the same version 2.2.8:
Storage
modify/delete SD card contents
Network communication
full Internet access
Phone calls
read phone state and identity
Hardware controls
control vibrator
I'm just wondering if anyone has seen this, or knows what the problem might be. The big issue of course is - if the locally reported permissions are right, then users could easily be deceived into installing rogue apps with misreported permissions.
Don't have an explanation for you, but I was able to duplicate your issue.
Thanks for taking time. I've noticed there are other apps as well:
Electric Shaver (Webxit), Spark (Diota Soft), SchottGunn, Ruger, Glow Puzzle, Flight Stats, Ethereal Dialpad, Arnold Sounds, etc., etc.
The permissions that seem to be the issue (i.e. missing from Market's security screen) are:
- modify/delete SD card content
- read phone state and identity
It has nothing to do with the ability to move to SD card - the above apps are a mix.
What worries me is that Market may not be displaying all the permissions given to an app; or that there may be a way to hide some of them from the Market app. I posted this question on Google's Android market forum as well, but no answer there either.
Hi,
I'm sorry if this has been answered before, I tried searching but I wasn't really sure what keywords to search for exactly....
Also I don't know if this is an ICS specific thing or not, since the Galaxy Nexus is my first Android device, which is why I'm asking here
Anyway, with that out of the way... When you click on a link in an app, say Gmail, it prompts you which app to use to open it. For example for youtube links I get the option of Browser, Youtube app, etc.
Is it possible to modify what is listed here? For example I have ICS Browser+ installed, so i really don't want to see the stock browser in this list...
Hopefully this is something easy enough to do
(BTW my device is rooted, if that is needed, and running 4.0.1)
Thanks in advance
Sorry no, you can't shorten that list. You can choose one app to always open that specific "action", then there won't be a list at all. But if you don't want that I don't know any other option other than uninstalling/disable the unwanted apps in setting > apps.
As long as you have options, you cant shorten the list. Set up your defaults and change them if you need to.
An easy app to help with setting up defaults: "DEFAULT APP MANAGER LITE" its free!

That's a shame, I dont want to set a default because I will use different apps depending on what I want to do.
Oh well, no big deal I can live with that.
Thanks for the info.
[REQUEST][MOD][ICS/JB] Email.apk bypass "No installed app to open this attachment..."
Is it possible to bypass the default behavior to block unknown or unassociated extensions in the Android exchange mail client ? thoughts, please discuss.
This might be better of in general discussion, but in case I do any app development/modification it goes in here. mods feel free to move it if you don't think this is appropriate.
Perhaps there is a simple option I am overlooking, besides installing an app for the file extension. I just want to be able to download attachments. not always do they have to be "opened" necessarily on the phone. this seems like a major oversight IMO.
how hard is it to offer a download button always? there might be a simple check to see if app installed for this extension ; return true.
Hi Guys
I have noticed since upgrading to the latest firmware (4.4.4 build number 3.28.401.7) that adaway is creating issues with other apps. I frequently get error messages stating "unfortunately google service has closed ,,,,"
I could confirm this by disabling adaway then everything is fine
however I prefer to find a solution to this, maybe someone could recommend a better ad blocking app?
many thanks
Unfortunately adaway is the best but there are other that work well if you have xposed framework look for min min guard it works pretty well

i did that and it didn't block ads on the app i was testing
No issues with Adaway and 4.4.4 for me.
Do you have any other issues with Google services? There is an issue with the US carrier AT&T, where Google services will sometimes fail on LTE with Euro based ROMs. It seems to be a problem with the Euro build.prop not playing well with AT&T's network.
Might have nothing to do with your issue, but might be worth trying another ROM at least.

I noticed it only with latest firmware+ROM, so i cannot be sure if it's the new firmware or the new rom
But Adaway is working fine on most apps, except one or two, where the ads are NOT appearing but the app is crashing
I often get the known message "unfortunately google service has closed..." but i also get a similar message stating the name of the app needs to be closed.
Is there a way to allow ads on certain apps through adaway? Maybe i can still use Adway but allow ads to show for apps that are crashing?
thanks

You might try the Whitelist function in Adaway. Press Menu>Your Lists, and there you will see a tab for whitelists. Never used this myself, just know it exists. But it seems like it might do what you want.

well i can see it but when i want to add (using the + BUTTON) it asks me for a host name rather than an application name
i am not sure how to do that

Ahh, so the white list is for hosts, not apps.
Go to Menu>Open hosts file. You will need a text editor of some sort installed (I have ES File Explorer installed, and the ES Note Editor opened the file fine - I'm guessing any text editor app will do). You'll find a large list of hosts. Try to find Google on there, and cut and paste the host name to your whitelist.
Again, I've never used the whitelist function before. So I'm just guessing how this works, and that it will help your issue.

thanks a lot
it helps me understand how Adaway works but unfortunately nothing with the word GOOGLE in the long list
however i am white listing some french sites which might be the cause of the french app to crash (its an app that lists programme TV)
I used to use AdAway ages ago, but moved onto AdBlock quite a while ago. I don't know if it's intrinsically better than AdBlock, but AdBlock is working fine for me.
AdBlock Plus
It can work without root, but is better with root, which I guess you have.
Adaway simply modifies the local HOSTS file, causing all traffic to ad servers (as defined by the subscription servers) to be redirected to local host. Since there isn't a web server running on the phone by default, the requests just fall on the floor and time out. Some (poorly written) apps get grumbly when they can't contact a web server, so there is an option under preferences for running one on localhost. I'm not clear what it "serves", though.
Personally, unless the app needs network access to function, I find that simply blocking them with iptables (I use Droidwall) is sufficient.

wow i have to admit that this did the job and was properly tested! I run the webserver and the application works, i disable it and the application crashes
The only small issue i have now is that the webserver doesn't run automatically even when i select "start at boot" but that is not a huge problem
I guess i can clear my whitelist now, since the webserver is dealing with this
many thanks Again
I even don't know what keywords to use in search to find what I want.
I'll tell my question in descriptive way.
I have tourist application which shows me point to see.
When I click 'go to it' - I have choice. I can pick up Google maps or navigation.
Problem is that I have two navigations and would like to use the other but it is not on list.
Somehow application knew that I have navigation. Why didn't it pick up both?
Does user has any way to intervene and add extra choice?
This is real life example but this situation occurrs on other areas.
For example I want share a file, picture or something else.
One app allows me select AndSMB to send file, other doesn't have it on list however both use sharing feature and must be able to review phone to know what they have till hands..
It is general question but i preferred to stick to my phone model, just in case if it is significant..
Any ideas?
Choose the apps you mention, open in Settings -> Apps and click on Clear Defaults!
Not sent by me.
Yes but later you still can assign as default only one of suggested.
Question is - how to add one which doesn't appear on screen.
