[Q] Do Android graphics, layout have copyright ©? - Design, Prototyping, UI, Graphics

Hey guys, i hope i'm posting in the right category.
I couldn't find an answer anywhere and question on the google play documentation is not specific enough for me to be sure about this. I was asking myself if android applications graphics, I.E, the way the items in the layout are placed, the combinations of colors used. etc are subject to copyright. I am building an application that resembles an already existing application. It's not a 100% same copy but some items are layed out in the same way i want to be sure that my application won't get thrown off google play once i publish. It's probably worth saying that i am not, in one single image using a copied image. I am just talking about layout settings and colors.
Thanks in advance for your time!

Are you coming from iOS development? AFAIK Google Play is not that strict (like App Store) with X-raying the apps before/after publishing.

[IDEA] Structure, Tagging, Better view for apps

Hey
I HATE trying to get applications from this forum, and that's because some apps are in the "Development and Hacking " and some in the phones categories. Which makes it hard finding THAT app you want. A smarter way making this work would have been making a
* "Windows - apps (only portrait)" &/or
* "Windows - apps (portrait and landscape)"
* (and a Andriod - apps category )
Sub-forum/category, and make people post their apps there. THEN tagging each app to their "home device" (probably the device the developer developed it for). The tagging would have done the work easier for the solution I want to propose, which is that each Mobile-category has the "Software" sub-folder, which load up those threads in the e.g: "Windows - apps (portrait and landscape)" which is tagged that specific device.
Like so, here is Raphael as an example:
RAPHAEL:
Raphael
CDMA
ROM development
Software [loads up the tagged treads from the "windows apps" categories]
Tweaks
Accessories
The developers have to make their apps in different versions for the VGA, WVGA ect. But this makes the users only happier. I hate to find my WonderAPP and then realize that its due to screensize not supported good enough.
And since I only have the Idea and can't develop, I'm just saying out loud. Hoping it's possible and doable.
If this method could have been a Daily used service, it would have been much easier to "beat" the " I loooooove the iPhone, its so much better for my daily 15 minutes of joy"-syndrome somebody apparently have (discussed in some sub-forums). Because I feel we don't need, as some people have mentioned, 20 apps doing the same. (And that's because they develop the programs in their "home-treads" and not in the Development and Hacking division. Which again leaves us to more alike apps. Just think if the 20 developers worked together on 1 or 2 apps, what a result we would have got.
And a extra thing would been nice, a category for "IDEAS, [UNDER DEVELOPMENT], ALPHA, BETA"-apps. So developers, who want to help, or need help have a "safe" and ONE "home" to come and visit.
[This category I do want, because I tried getting somebody to help me, with my ideas for some apps, and no responds.]
Best Regards

Why is this a separate forum to the Dream themes?

As far as I know, the only software difference between Dream and Sapphire is kernel and driver stuff, neither of which effect themes at all.
So why not get rid of the Sappire themes forums completely and just provide a link (for convenience) to the Dream ones? The Hero themes might be identical as well?
I'm sure there are a few other discussions that can be shared between the various platforms too.
I only suggest this because this website is fairly slow (at least here) and having to search both the Dream and Sapphire themes topics can be quite frustrating.
All of my Oreo themes work for CM so if you are running that version of CyanogenMod you can use my themes for the G1. The same applies to any theme, they are just built for a specific rom, not hardware.
Thankyou for clarifying that. It's exactly what I'm getting at. Dream? Sapphire? Hero? It doesn't matter regarding themes because they are all interchangeable between these models. The themes forums for all 3 platforms (and any others that are compatible) should be merged so that it's easier to locate them.
Actually some Rom's are not yet for all Sapphire builds yet. Like the Hero's. There getting there just not yet
Because if someone comes here wanting to theme their Sapphire, and theres no dedicated section for it, the average person would probably be confused, then continue their search elsewhere.
I'm sure in this day and age we have the technical capacity to still make it seem like there is a "Sapphire themes and wallpapers" section, can simply link to to the "Dream themes and wallpapers" section transparently. I agree that it would be confusing for users to not find such a section at all.
My problem is that we have parallel discussions happening, which is a waste of time. It's also a waste of time having to search 2 sections in order to prevent parallel discussions happening. Why not simply merge them since we know for a fact that all the content within such a merged forum would apply equally to both for the benefit of all?
I agree. This is confusing. There are a LOT more themes available on here than what you see in this area because themes for Magic and G1 are also compatible.
Why don't we use tags for this?
From the FAQ:
Tags
What are tags?
Tags are a useful way to search for threads with similar subject matter and content. This complements the normal search system, which searches only for certain words or phrases and/or posts by specific users.
To use tags, you add words or phrases to threads to help describe the content. For instance, if the subject matter is 'photography' then you can add the tag 'photography' to the tag list. But you could also add tags like 'digital image', and 'camera' (depending, of course, on the nature of the thread).
This will categorize this thread with all other threads that have matching tags, whether or not they have the word 'photography' in them.
Who adds the tags?
Tags are initially added to threads by the user who started the thread. Other users may also be able to add and remove tags.
How do I use tags?
Tags are displayed in a box near the bottom of a thread page. Clicking on a tag will allow you to view other threads that have the same tag - and which may be related. Clicking on the word 'Tags' in the top of the box will take you to an overview page with a 'tag cloud.'
This cloud allows you to see which tags are the most popular - the larger the word, the more times it has been used on threads within the board. There is also another tag cloud on the advanced search page that shows you the tags that have been searched for (or clicked on) the most.

We could post a sticky listing the tags in use to be consistent. When you post a theme, you tag it. Relevant data would be:
Type (#theme
Theme name (#remix)
OS (#android)
Compatible ROM+build (#cyanogen4.0.4)
Compatible devices (#hero #sapphire #dream)
Then search tags instead of threads.
Vallyn: that's not a bad idea really. I've noticed there's already a convention in place for the title of a thread, which is almost as good as some minor tagging. I'm actually just now transitioning my data over to tags and it's actually a really cool way of doing things.
Convincing everyone to start using the tags can be tricky though. That may or may not be easier than possibly having to modify the layout or even backend of these forums to get a simple link in. /shrug

My First App, Need Serious Help :/

Hey guys, like the title says, I'm attempting to create an app, but with little success at this point.
What I want to do, didn't sound all that complicated in my head. I want to make an episode guide for a TV show I like. Nothing too fancy, but I do want it to look WP7-authentic.
First off, I don't know or really understanding coding in the slightest. I was hoping to be able to design most of the app through the on-screen WP7 display, which it seems I can do a lot on.
From what I've gathered, here's what I'd like to do:
Use the "Pivots" as the different story arcs or "seasons"
Within each pivot, Episode # and Title
But I'd also like to go one further and have each episode be clickable, which would take the user to a page containing info about the respective episode. Synopsis, International Titles, Airdate, etc.
It's a big project, I just need a little help getting it going.
Thanks!
dbG33K
what you're describing can be done one of two ways.
1. just display images after images
2. input text into the program
from what im gathering, it should be fairly easy for you to do as this is the sort of beginner stuff in most windows phone 7 programming books. id suggest you look into programming because even the slightest pivots and transitions require code.
now if you were on android or webos, thats different. they have full on graphics based programming thats a simple matter of drag and drop and choose function.
Download Expression Blend. You can do pretty much everything without having to write any code. It includes a "Pivot" template which has a pivot all ready for you, then you just add PivotItems using your mouse. Then you can use the Sample Data feature to mock up how your episode data will look.
The only thing you would have to write code for would be to pull the episode information from a datasource. Bind it to your controls and Expression will have the rest done for you.

First thing you'll need before you even open Visual Studio or Blend is a data feed.
An rss feed is ideal, And I'm sure theres alot of them out there for TV listings. Without that, theres little you can do (other than screen scraping websites, but people don't look too kindly on that)
If you can find me a Url for the RSS feed you want to use, I'll be more than willing to help you out

What he said
I'd be willing to help you out as well. I'm in the process of writing a feed reader to help me make the move WP7 from WPF/Silverlight. The idea I have for the UI is similar to yours and the feed reader (at least in the basic form) will be open source so I've no problem sharing my code...
I appreciate your willingness to help me out, but it's actually a series that has been over for quite a while.
Hey guys, I've gotten much further on my app and have become a little more well-acquainted with coding in the form of using Expression Blend 4. That said, I do have a few questions:
1. After making a few pages, I decided to make a sort of Welcome page for my app. How do I tell it to show that page first instead of "MainPage.xaml"?
2. On that welcome page, I would like to make a button that pulls up the user's E-mail and have it have my e-mail as the recipient.
Thanks a bunch!
This is in the WMAppManifest.xml file within the Properties folder.
for the email look into the email compose task

That doesn't really help me too much...
What am I supposed to do in the WMAppManifest.xml?
And where do I find the email compose task, and how do I implement it into the app?
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured out both of those questions. A new question, though: How do I take screen shots of the app? I need at least one to submit it to the marketplace, but I don't know how :/

Make sure your emulator is set to 100% size and uncheck the "Show Device" checkbox in the tool. That will give you the necessary 480x800 sized .png
There's a fair lot you can do using the designer panel, but you will definitely need C# code for what happens 'behind the curtains'. Things like pulling the episodes from the internet and such.
I definitely recommend these tutorials:
Windows Phone 7 Development for Absolute Beginners.
It builds up slowly, but definitely gives you the foundation you need to put together basic applications.
Hey guys I found this thread and after reading it I feel I have a lot in common with dbG33K's tasks & questions. I feel I have a lot to offer WP7 apps as I learn more! I started out in January learning and studying as an absolute beginner (even did the 5 day course online). After a lot of studying, I felt confident enough to write my first BIG app.
I'm pretty good at the xaml part and getting real familiar with c# as I go along. Also, I think I have all the pieces I need, just need help putting it all together. I'm using an API for the data source (i have all the dlls and resources in place even all the c# methods for the API).
I have the UI all put together, now working on the c#. I'm just unsure on the binding part. I know my listboxes and other controls should be binded to a method in c#, but what calls that method? When the page loads that listbox, textblock, etc? Also, what kind of coding is generally used inside the {} of the methods that pulls info from the datasource?
As I have learned a lot aver the past couple of months, I find that I've learned it from examples I've found online, but I'm drawing a blank on this one. Any help would be great!
Thanks!
Do any of you can tellme how can I save text from the text box??

NEW 11-17-12 Google Play 3.10.9

Google is pushing out an updated Google Play Store version 3.10.9 that follows the previous versions 3.9.16 and 3.9.17.
What's New
New screen that pops up after you start installing new apps. The screen serves as an interstitial between the last installation step we're all used to and jumping back to the screen with the progress. It does help shine additional spotlight on app discovery thanks to a clickable Users Also Installed block of apps, but it feels more like an annoying filler page that you want to skip when opening an article on something like Forbes.com. The additional screen only increases the amount of clicks needed to install a new app and go back to other parts of the Play Store, so I'm definitely not a fan. To be clear, Keep Shopping returns you to the app you are installing (also shown on the right):
Next up: a Remove icon in My Wishlist similar to the icon that was added to the All tab of My Apps last time around. A small but welcome change for quicker wishlist cleanup.
Update #1: The Play Store now requests two more permissions: ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION and ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION - both location permissions of varying accuracy. It's unclear right now what it uses them for.
Update #2: A large chunk of the additional space (300KB) is taken up by a new library Google has bundled in called keyczar. I don't think there's anything interesting here, as the Wallet APK (and probably other Google apps) bundles it as well, and it's related to cryptography.
Update #3: There is a new Translate button next to app descriptions that shows up if your system language is set to something other than English (or maybe it tries to match the declared app language with your system language - I'm not sure). Either way, it's a great addition for those of you who may need help with translation (thanks, Floris and Marius for spotting this change!):
Update #4: There is now an Improve these recommendations button at the top of Recommended for You (thanks for spotting this one, ZZ!). I'm not too sure exactly how it works, as clicking each name just opens up the Google Voice circles dialog, and clicking Add adds people to the Friends circle. I suppose, adding people to your Google Plus circles will help the recommendation algorithm behind the scenes. I'd like to clear this up right now though: you cannot see other people's apps - this is not a way to share app lists explicitly.
Also, perhaps the new location permissions are related to finding people you may know and determining your area more accurately (some apps are recommended based on popularity in your area).
Thanks, dude!
Doesn't Play Store updates itself? That's silly!
This is for people who want it earlier, or wish to speed up the roll out process

[Q] Is 'Droid working strictly for us (and not for Google) possible?

Hi, guys!
Before I pose my question: I am really in awe of projects in the Open Source community style and this is soooooo good to see and experience (my other hobby is Sat TV "hacking" and so on... )!!!!!!!!!! :good: So, endless thanx and respect(!!!!) to all involved!!!!!!!!!!
Context: recently I managed to S-OFF my HTC Desire with 'Droid 2.2.2, then somehow I rooted it, 4EXT recovery/backup (if memory serves, the "touch" one) is in, in recovery mode I flashed the latest MIUI ROM (sorry if I misspelled it) with JB 4.1.2, improved the "radio" and so on... The one or two things that do not work - that I noticed - was no sending SMSs and poor video recording and reproduction. So, the search is continuing!
My question is - before I attempt the flashing of Paranoid Android ROM (how fitting, regarding my question! ) - is there a ROM that has kicked the living daylights out of Google corporate c*a#, please? As in, there is no stuff, in that would-be ROM, that constantly collects our data and sends it back to corporate and other commercial coders, please?
Because, as a matter of principle, we ought not to have to think of just how much data is going to corporation(s) and individuals coding apps etc. And from then on, to "authorities", of course. Not that I have anything to fear, in that respect - but it is the principle that is at stake here! Similar with Linux v. MacroHard and their "enlightened" attitude towards our privacy etc.
You know, we have a myriad of apps of all sorts, so I suppose we do not need Google's intrusion in all aspects of our interaction. I am perfectly happy, for instance, to use Firefox or Maxthon or Opera browser and get into my emails that way, not having to use the Google app for Gmail! I presume we could also have other apps to replace Google chat (presumably through Firefox in Gmail?) and so on and so forth. Really, I do not need Google's maps, when we have Open Street app and so on and on and on.
So, does this ROM exist, please? No Google/corporate/commercial stuff in it, that is...
And if not, has the time arrived? It is Linux, after all...
Would it be possible to make something like that?
Many thanx, again!
P.S. I recently bought a SuperPad tablet and I wonder if there are custom built ROMs/OSs for those, as well? Anyone knows, please?
Well of course any Rom without the Google apps.
Your principles on data collection went out the window when you first used the internet.
I disagree... respectfully, of course...
For instance, see BBC website for the "right to be forgotten" EU proposal on data collection/storage/handling... However, no such battle can ever be completely lost or won - they keep going on...
As a newby I have a problem with posting links but... let me try:
Code:
bbc co uk / news / technology-16677370
My Q was also re. full functionality without Google stuff - some ROM authors warn that their ROMs can't function properly unless we flash the Google stuff immediately after ROM itself... Any clarification, please?

its not to do with they cant function properly (they can) its just the fact that play store is "google" and u also need a gmail account. correct me if im wrong. Soo like dethrat says,.... its about gapps. (more or less).
It's not a matter of me thinking this is/you're wrong (on this one). I think/hope, that you are also hoping that I am right... Am I right?
You have a point, in a way, since it started in this manner with credit cards (easily done but also easily circumvented) and onwards but...
Look, ever tried Flipboard? I mean, if you are neglecting the examples I already wrote about... Check it and compare with Google Currents, please... Simply flipboard dot com... Need I say more?
On the level of principles: we do not need to be tethered/electronically tagged and under constant "surveillance" by Google or any other corporation or even the state, for that matter... Don't you think this is kinda worth at least trying? No offence intended to anyone(!) but I think this is the adult thing to do...
Well, this is what I am looking forward to nowadays... So, do you think that, for instance, a developer of Paranoid Android could make it all work with "alternative" apps, please? An effective "Ads Blocker" and kinda "No Script" apps included, of course. Maybe even - in this sense - "cleaned up" crucial apps, too... If "Anonymous" were really serious and competent (intellectually, professionally and morally), maybe they should get on it right away, eh?
I mean, if I ever requested anything from anyone on these boards, this would be it - an AIO OS without corporate [email protected]#. And I have a feeling that a fair few of us might keep trying this sort of thing out...:good:
Code:
bbc dot co dot uk / news / science-environment-21923360
Any more info on my question, please? Anyone with some experience?
Cheers!
So, the great WoH tells me that it is possible to use his ROM without the G-stuff, that is "Gapps" - and that everything should work just fine! And I am very grateful for this possibility! I only need to "skip the step with the gapps", he says.
Then, one proceeds with "3rd party app stores" like Amazon, GetJar, Fireplace and Yandex.Store. I presume there is an included browser in the ROM without the Gapps, so I start it and go to one of those sites, get their gadget and simply install from there, the free stuff... hopefully not having to log in with my Gmail account...
My problem, though, lies here in this thread - setting up PDroid. That's for seriously enhanced privacy/security! In the thread's "how to" there seem to be some discrepancies with the newer versions of PDroid... Really not sure how to do it, what exactly must be done, with which files... And I can't post in that section, to ask questions... Like "Where is the apk you mention in the top post?" and "What exactly are the steps?"
So, I must prepare by reading a lot, testing it and then redoing it, from scratch, i.e. flash the ROM again, as WoH described in his thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2131790
My hope would be that he includes the PDroid patch/apps - if at all possible - in the next edition of his awesome ROM!
Also, I would dearly love to see and test a ROM with all the best alternative apps, links to a few of the best 3rd party apps stores, tools etc. - but no G-c#@p (or almost no G-c#@p)... at least as much as humanly possible...
Here is a sketch:
3rd party apps stores,
keyboard and speech apps,
a couple of browsers (Firefox/Opera, maybe),
a few tools to manage the phone and set it up properly (Advanced Task Killer, Android Manager and alike),
best audio-visually capable Gtalk app and Skype for chat,
some non-demanding but good protection (Avast suite?),
Flipboard for news,
Adobe Reader, Kindle and Aldiko for reading,
MX and Meridian players for multimedia stuff,
Flash,
camera and videocam apps(?),
audio, video and photo editing SW,
Sopcast (TV channels) and "1Channel for Google" for audio-video streaming from the net,
...and so on,,, everybody continuing to fill it up according to their preferences, of course... all freeware/gratis!!!
Perhaps call it an "Alternative apps pack"???
So, maybe: when apps2sd card tool has been installed, we flash the "Alternative apps pack"... and it all goes to an SD card?
I think this might be a very cool idea, for many of us...
Go WoH and co.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :good:
