1) What app is recommended to block them without rooting the phone? "Ad blocker"?

2) What app is recommended to block ads *with* rooting the phone? "adfree"?
i have installed many ad blockers through the years and none of them works, doesnt matter root or not root but apps still show ads. so just dont bother!
only one app seems to actually block ads but its a complicate one and not for anyone, its called LuckyPatcher. it detects ads on an app and actually modifies the app to block them which may result in the app not work properly.
My Galaxy S4 just broke. I had a custom ROM on it that had ad blocking built-in. I didn't realize how nice it was until it was gone!
I have an LG G3 now. Maybe I need to find a custom ROM.
ad free, it needs root

I'm using the first app in OP, works very well and blocks all ads in browser for me

I recently installed cyanogenmod 6.1.2 and for some reason it is blocking ads without any program installed to do that. I used to have have adfree installed on other roms but that's not the case anymore and I'm trying to run an app called audiogalaxy but it wont work without ads. I guess my question is does cyanogen normally block ads and if not, what might be causing this.

This worked perfectly on my Samsung Captivate! I was trying to figure out how to stop the ad blocking and this did the trick. Thanks!

Flame-retardant suit on....
As long as a developer isn't obnoxious with ad placement, and especially if they offer an ad-free version as a choice, I really don't have a problem with ads. And in fact, I could almost consider it a form of piracy to block ads. (Extra flame resistant gel added.) The developer has decided they want to be paid for their work, and there is nothing wrong with that. Whether you download a cracked version or whether you use the ad supported version and block ads, you're preventing them from getting paid. I think ad-supported apps are a reasonable compromise. They get some compensation, and you don't have to shell out a dime.
I do have ads blocked right now, and I did it because I love Angry Birds and they made it nearly unplayable with the new ad placement, and didn't allow us the choice of an ad-free version. That just ticked me off. I actually feel bad about the other developers who aren't getting paid as a result. I'm thinking about turning it off, and/or buying the ad free versions of some of those apps. I wish I could just block ads in specific apps. I have some apps that are useful, but not so useful or frequently used that I feel like paying for an ad free version, and I'd be happy to let them get some revenue from ads when I use it.
I also don't deny that I'm completely hypocritical on this with my Tivo. I'm fast forwarding through the ads of the recorded GB/Philly game as I write this. I'm NOT passing moral judgment on anyone. If you want to block ads, that's fine. As I said, I have done it myself, but as I started to think about it more, I started to question whether it's really that different than downloading a cracked version (which I won't say I've never done either, though I've been making an effort to resist and correct lately). It's just something I thought I'd bring up in case someone hasn't thought about it from that perspective.
I"m trying adfree but there still seems to be ads getting through. Does anyone know of a good way to get rid of those annoying ads?

adfree works perfectly on mine with the latest 4.0.2 rom
None of these work for me anymore. Looks like apps are using there own host servers now

If a hosts file-based ad blocker isn't working for any ads, then it's probably because your SIM is configured to go through a proxy, which under some configurations will ignore the local hosts file. If you know how to use iptables, you can use that to block ads instead of using the hosts file. Firewalls will block ads even with a proxy service.
Hey, I use adaway on a rooted GN and it works perfectly.
I'm on rooted 4.0.1 using adfree and its working great
I'm using xScope and am not sure if ad blocking exists. Are there any browsers that allow you to block ads? It seems like the ads are really slowing me down.

You can use the Adblock plus extension for Firefox.
AdFree works for me, and works for in-app ads as well (banners).
Thanks, I'll give them a try.
I see AdFree is for rooted users only so I guess I'll figure out how to root first. Thanks again.
I used to use Adfree on my Nexus One and loved it. Have not rooted my Galaxy yet or I would be running it.
For those on the unrooted retail edition, do you use an ad blocker? If so which one?
tried adblock plus app, but it only works over wifi and prevented me from sending any mms messages. i'm mostly at the grin and bear it stage, but i sometimes will use firefox with the adblock plus extension installed within the app. it works pretty well but obviously only works in the browser and makes pages load a little slowly. desperately waiting for that root method to be found!

No way to make adblock plus work over cellular networks? I do want root to eliminate all those ads.
I didn't mess around with it much after i couldn't send mms messages with it installed. their website says it will only work over wifi so i'd take their word for it. it may be possible with enough tinkering but the mms thing was a deal breaker to me. maybe there was more i could've done to get around all the issues but i'm too impatient
Need ROOT!
Used adaway for years, and currently without root and no ad blocking, some ads would be bearable,
But Jesus Christ! the amount of mobile ads now is completely out of control and obnoxious.

adblock plus. the apps official help guide mentions you can block ads on non root over WiFi, but you can also block it over cellular as well.
https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install
alternatively you can use Firefox and install an ad block extension.
if you want ads blocked in non web browsing apps, you'll have to rip out the Google ad sense out of each app individually.
for YouTube there's a hacked version of the YouTube app that plays with screen off, has ads removed, supports full hd, and has downloading built in. it's SOMEWHERE here in xda, but for the life of me I can't find the one that sideloads.
you can change the easier one to find's signature tho so it'll sideload tho
I've made a post in general for non root. A app called AdGuard will block ads on Wi-Fi & Cellular by using a VPN
- followup. I see this was already mentioned in a earlier post!
Which works best with fewer hassles adblock plus or adguard?
We obviously dont have root yet, therefore we cannot use adaway. I tried adblock plus but made no difference on my phone, maybe because i didnt edit the settings needed for it to work properly but it said that u shouldnt need to if ure using android 4.0+ (or something like that).
So, what app are u using for ad removal?
you have to edit settings to get adblock plus to work…
I don't like ad block anyway. It blocked whole webpages and slowed down loading times in general.
My girlfriend is using Adguard on her Note 4. In my opinion, it's the best ad blocker for non-rooted phones.
I'm using my ability to ignore things that don't interest me. Not to sound snotty, but advertising is the cost of free. I wish I could get rid of it, but without root there isn't much that can be done about it.
If you tweak the proxy setting for your wifi to
Localhost
Port 2020
ABP will work like a charm.
