Sync between watch and phone seem to be working pretty well, however, it is a huge battery drain on my phone.
Correct me if i'm wrong but it seems that you have to have location reporting on in order to enable activity detection.
Is there no way to benefit from the watch stepcounting and disable the battery hungry location reporting on the phone?
Thanks,

I normally leave "Google's Location Service" off unless I am using GPS to save battery. To use the Gnow cards, I have to turn it on. Is there a way (an app or setting) to have the setting turn on when Gnow opens? Or is the battery drain from having this setting on at all times not that big of a deal?
Don't think there is - perhaps tasker can open both the Google's Location Services and Google Now at the same time but you would have to manually turn it off. However, the battery drain from the location services shouldn't have a huge effect (at least not that I noticed).
Location services are a massive drain causing numerous wakelocks and keeping your phone in a wake state with the sevices poling. I've found this out with the various battery apps (GSam, better battery, etc). This coupled with maps are a killer on battery. But to have some of the newest features there have to be sacrifices somewhere.
You could toggle 3g/2g data if your ROM supports it. That way it's only using 2g data instead of hogging 3g data (read: battery drain) when using location services.
Also try CPU sleeper which disables CPUs when your screen isn't on and makes your phone run at 384mhz instead of the normal 1k range.
I've not noticed much additional drain with Google's Location Services. It uses public wifi location data to rougly estimate your location. Not as accurate as GPS for sure, but much less harder on your battery.
I leave Google's Location Services on and have not found any issues.
The battery drain being a big deal (or not) may be subjective. If you are truly concerned with it eating power, run a few tests with it on/off, no?
Or you can leave the location setting always on and just turn your data on/off when not using the phone. That's what I do and my battery has good life. About 16 hrs
Hi,
I tried to search the whole wide web for identification on this particular wakelock, but the search came out negative. I have rooted Nexus 7 (2013) with stock rom and this wakelock is getting over a thousand alarm wakelocks per discharging cycle. I know it has something to do with scheduled tasks, but have you guys had this same issue with your Nexus? Can't say how much this effects the batterylife, but it would be nice to know what causes this and is it avoidable
Here is a pic from my BetterBatteryStats so you can see the wakelock in question:
So it is called ALARM_WAKEUP_ACTIVITY_DETECTION.
Thanks!
Figured it out, at least i pinpointed the cause of this wakelock. It has something to do with Googles location services. I turned all the location services off and the wakelock disappeared. Why does Google want to wakeup my device every 3 minutes even though i have device management off, google now off, everything else that relates to location, off?

Turning Google Now off usually does it. Did you have location history and/or reporting on?

I had Google Now off as well for a few days without any effect. I also disabled the history and reporting and no effect. The only thing that ended those wakelocks was to permanently shut down location services. But it's not a burden to me, only a few clicks and i can have them on when i need them.
Since the Lollipop update I noticed my battery was draining very quickly. One thing I noticed was that my GPS would keep looking for a location. So I turned off my GPS and the battery drain stopped. So I have kept my GPS off just to keep the battery from draining. I didn't have to do that before. Anyone having this issue? What could be causing the GPS to continuously be searching for a location? Any thoughts on how to fix it? Thank you.

I ran into the same issue when I first upgraded. Did a factory reset and that seemed to fix all the slowness but GPS was still on like all the time. Switched to power saving so I still have most location features and it seems to have fixed the drain too. I haven't been able to get it to lock though - but it shows where I am with great accuracy. Tried multiple GPS fix apps and none will lock onto the last satellite... even though there's 12 already! Ridiculous!
That's why most Note 3's get hot too. That GPS not getting a solid lock and running while people are charging and so on.
i am having the same exact issues since lollipop too. My battery life was one of the things i loved about my note too! I am trying the powersaving now as a temp fix, but this is not an acceptable solution for me at all
I looked through my location information in settings and found that the "Unified Daemon" is listed as high usage on the battery. So I clicked on "force stop" and the constant search for GPS went away as did the battery drain. Any ideas if it would be okay to actually hit "disable' on this? I have read that it is for your weather widgets which I don't use so I guess I would be okay with disabling it although I want to make sure. So any thoughts on this would be helpful.

You can disable it without consequence if you don't use any of the accuweather widgets or a Gear watch. It will save you much battery.
Try the nv rebuild. I was having this too, that fixed it for me. Still works on Lollipop.

Right? I did that a couple hours ago but I actually had to recharge during this day... So now I'm testing it out.

I actually do have a Gear 2 Neo that I use with my phone. What would it affect on the Gear Watch? I have noticed that when I do "Force Stop" the Unified Daemon it does save my batter quite a bit. Just don't want to disable it if it will cause a problem on the watch. I don't use the weather on the watch, so if that is the only thing it will have an issue with then I am okay with it. Thanks.

According to other smart watch users, including the Gear 2 Neo, there are no ill effects on the watch from disabling the daemon. Clear the cache from the application itself once it's been disabled and reboot. Users here report at least 20-30% battery life improvements.

" A daemon (pronounced DEE-muhn) is a program that runs continuously and exists for the purpose of handling periodic service requests that a computer system expects to receive. The daemon program forwards the requests to other programs (or processes) as appropriate. Each server of pages on the Web has an HTTPD or Hypertext Transfer Protocol daemon that continually waits for requests to come in from Web clients and their users."
I think it's just Samsung's way of playing "nice" with Web based providers so they can track your likes, dislikes, locations and activities all for the sole purpose of putting adds in your face.
I have disabled this and have no issues whatsoever using my gear watch.
Pp.
My phones GPS really takes a long time to make fix... and keeps losing it regularly after the update.
Tried nv rebuild as well.. wipe cache partition as well. .. no improvement. ..
Any other tips?

i cant decide if i should keep my GPS on or off, if i keep it off apps like lookout will not work in case i need to locate my phone if lost, how do you keep your gps on or off?
On. Always.
on, all you are doing is allowing gps to run when needed. the only time it is on is when you see the location notification.

Depending on your other apps, GPS can either be a light nuisance (getting location takes an awfully long time) or a complete battery destroyer (apps which use the location feature too often.)
Definitely off, if you care about your sanity or battery life. "Battery saving" location option is more than adequate for most everyday tasks.

I always have my GPS off unless I need it.
I can't tell the difference on my battery life weather gps is on or off so mines always on
Keep your GPS on and in battery saving network towers option. If you have apps that look for location like a weather widget, they will actually use more battery trying to find location with GPS off than leaving it on.
Hello everyone,
I have a Nexus 5x with android Marshmallow 6.0.1, and for a long time now I'm having problems with Doze feature overnight. On a regular basis when I'm going to sleep - I turn off wifi and mobile data. Some mornings I wake up to see that battery was drain by almost 10% even though doze was active some of the time.
I attached the graphs of "Battery Historian" for last night. Though the battery drain is not horrible in this case, there are two things that I don't understand why they occur:
1. between doze periods, GPS is turned on. On my device "Location" is off and also "WiFi scanning". When I checked which app used GPS during this log, it says "com.waze", which is the domain of the Waze navigation app. However, even if one of its services does come to life between dozes, I don't understand how it is able to turn on GPS location without my active permission. I should say that some night another app will do that, like Tinder.
2. One wakelock that governs the wakelock charts is RILJ, which I understand is connected to location approximation using cellular networks. While the first problem I mentioned happens to me for several months now, this wakelock appears in the logs only recently. I think it relates to an app I recently installed called "Smart Wifi Toggler" which is supposed to automatically turn WiFi on/off depending on approximated location triggers. I uninstalled the app the same day I installed it, however since then RILJ wakelock always appears in the logs.
Last, I wonder if I should upgrade to Nougat. I understand Doze is better utilized with it, but I heard many users desire to downgrade back to marshmallow. In the case I do upgrade, I will perform cache and memory wipe so I don't know what will happen to these bugs. And the researcher in me still wants to know the sources of these errors.
Any help with these matters will be greatly appreciated.
