Does anyone have experience with profiles in KitKat? I have an VK810 (Verizon) and would like to allow my kids to use it (rarely) without access to my work information. I have tried two ways so far:
- Add Restricted Profile: this lets me allow access to apps I have installed and it sort of inherits some information from my Google accounts. However, I have been unable to get Play Music or Play Movies to work - it doesn't appear able to authenticate or get proper access to the base Google accounts. There are errors that seem to indicated that Google Play Services and not available to the restricted account. Am I doing something wrong? Why allow access to Play Music, if you can't get access to the music in any accounts?
- Add a new User: this will work for what I want to do, but I will need to re-setup everything, as it inherits nothing from my account. I will need to re-add the Google accounts, re-install any apps that are wanted, etc.
Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? Or other options? I need to be able to keep the hotspot running in the background as well, to feed the other devices in the car.
Thanks.

A slightly lengthy attempt to summarise the (often contradictory) advice on this issue.
The problem: Google is allowing UK users to change from @googlemail addresses to @gmail. Many users report persistent messages that google talk authentication has failed and downloads from the market are freezing.
How to make the change (READ the rest of this before you do!): Login to your Google mail account and go to settings/account. You will see a small link offering the option. Some users report a need to do this twice before it 'sticks'. (Baed on my experience, I suspect the change takes some time to propagate - see final note here). You can reverse this change in the same way.
Solutions (or not!)
1. There is no 100% reliable way to change the gmail account details on your phone without a factory reset.
Some users recommend clearing the Google Apps data from within Apps Manager which then prompts you to set up the account details again. This option is grayed out for many
Some have recommended changing your account password. For me this did not allow me to change all the account details on the phone
2. You can set up a second gmail account on the phone with the @gmail details. However this may not allow you to delete the @googlemail account although some have suggested it does. You will recieve copies of all emails on both accounts!
3. Do a factory reset. Back up all your data, take a deep breath and go for it! Seriously, this did not actually result in a lot of work for me as I don't have a truckload of apps on the phone. You have the choice of reverting to the @googlemail account (which is what I did) or setting up with the new @gmail details. From what I can gather the latter approach does not result in problems with re-installing paid for apps - but no promises!
NOTE: You will receive email sent to either @googlemail or @gmail on your old @googlemail account so you could just start using @gmail as your address and forget about the problem!
...and finally. Having gone through all of the work associated with a factory reset to @googlemail, I discover that Google has reset my account to @gmail anyway and everything seems to be working OK! I do wonder if changes to accounts are propagating very slowly. (I also wonder if Google knows what it is doing, but that's another story)
Hope this is some help
I had this problem and corrected it by reverting back to @googlemail.
But what gets me is that considering how widespread this problem is, is the overwhelming silence from Google.

Probably because most UK Desire owners have phones from Orange, and they've removed Google Talk (although they've handily left the service running!), so this isn't going to be a problem for them. Also, a lot of people have always known that you could always ignore the `googlemail` thing and use gmail.
Why bother?
Any email sent to [email protected] is received by [email protected] anyway..

Why bother? Because, as the OP says, if, in the UK, you change you address from googlemail to gmail, you won't be able to download anything from the App Market.
is there anywhere we can ask google to provide android switchover instructions?
You know you don't have to put the @ when setting up an account.
When I set up both my G1 and my Desire I just signed in with the Google user name.
Just to add my bit, I'm a Google apps account owner, my domain is not gmail or googlemail its simply hosted by Google and even though I've done nothing its stopped working for me also on my desire. I get the same googletalk auth error and can't download anything from the apps store either.
Interestingly, even from my pc, if I goto googletalk it won't let me in either, yet email and other Google apps like docs and calendar work no bother. Selecting Google talk gives a 404 unauthorized.
Plus side:
Picasa web albums now sync

I got exactly the same as this, after everything working brilliantly for 3 days!! I have now setup a gmail account to sign the phone up with and the turn all sync off for it, thrn setup my Google for domains and setup the calendar through exchange and everything is working fine...its a big faff, but it will works well: )
I did do a lot of reading and apparently Google for domains doesn't work with Google talk full stop... BUT why work for days with no problems!! Stupid!!

Hi All
The main account on my Desire Z is the account I use for my business, which was setup as a google apps account, it works fine for email etc but was never able to be used for Picasa or other google applications.
However, they have just recently transitioned google apps accounts and now they can access all the google applications, however to get them working on your phone, the google website says I'd need to backup my phone, remove the account, factory reset and then readd the account...
I'm not sure I like the sound of this as potentiall I could lose things if I've not backed everything up etc...
Is there anyway I can do this without having to do a full reset? So I can use the newly accessible apps likes picasa etc
Thanks
I am having the same issue - my calendar no longer sync's correctly as it's still attached to the me%[email protected] address, even though it displays the 'merged' account [email protected] Very frustrating!

If you're worried about losing things because you haven't backed everything up then back everything up, it's pretty simple.
Download Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro and back up your apps and data; after you reset your phone, restore your apps and data

I realise that but was just wondering if a reset was actually necessary or not?

I’m running a gingerbread build and I can just go to Accounts & Sync and add a new gmail account and remove the old one.
I don’t know if that’s what you mean though.
Before Google All Access came to the UK I used a proxy to set up a US subscription. I now want to change to a UK account but I keep getting charged in dollars and can't use my UK cards. Any ideas?
I have the exact same problem in Portugal. What I was able to do was sign up for All Access with a different gmail account and upload all the music again. It's fine on the phone, but in Chrome I'm forced to switch between the two accounts, which is far from ideal... Wish Google would allow users to reset their Google Music accounts, doesn't seem possible at the moment.
I have purchased many apps and games on my Google account. The games I purchase for my kids to play on their tablet.
I can add my account on the tablet and get all the games to work, the problem is that it is very easy to access the rest of my accounts (email, contacts, messaging, etc...). I know I can go into the settings and disable sync on everything but the play store, but it is very easy to go back in and re-enable them.
I worry because my kids spend most of their time with their mother (my ex-wife). I really don't want her to have access to all my accounts.
My current solution is to use an app lock app to password protected access to the settings. The problem is that all of the settings are restricted. They can't even log into a new wifi access point.
I'm wondering if there is a better way.
Can I transfer ownership of the apps to another account? Maybe I can setup a new "family" account that we can all share.
Is there a way to restrict access to only the sync settings? Or maybe require a password to login to specific accounts (e.g. No password for the play store, but a password for gmail, hangouts, etc..)
Any other ideas?
Open new Google account and transfer all data to it. Leave the old account only for the purchased apps.
You can use the app lock feature of this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.toolbox.full to lock certain apps from prying eyes. You'll also have to install the plugin. Then lock the uninstall apps section to prevent being able to uninstall things.
Here is a video if anyone is interested in having dual accounts active on nvidia shield tv... Insrtuctions are in the description... I did this along time ago but realized alot of people didnt know how to do it... Enjoy my video!!

No I've had this way since the shield console first came out it's great for games you can switch google plus profiles to keep saves seperate... But you cant switch some games like doom and battle of sol because only the account that bought it is associated with that game... In shield hub you can log in and out of profiles with google plus now and use different profiles to purchase games
I can confirm that sideloading the GMail apk allows additional google accounts to be added to the ShieldTV. The Google Play Music app is only associated with the 'first' (or primary) account though. I have an account that is signed up for Google Play Music All Access, but use a different account for general purchases on the Play Store. So far as I can tell, I can select software to install via the web Play Store using my 'Play Store' account and have my 'Play Music' account as my primary account, and it seems to be working ok.
Hey, thanks for the tip. I can see cases that this can be useful. But I wonder the reasoning why by default they limited to a single account?
Yes, a TV is a shared object. But still, there are many ways I can use the shield having personal preferences.
Just to confirm in 2019 on a sony android TV that sideloading Gmail does indeed add another google account which can be switched to on the youtube app. I've got three accounts set up now so we don't spoil each others recommendations
I sideloaded the Gmail apk through esexplorer. Then using a mouse and keyboard I signed in with two further google accounts on the gmail by selecting "other account". When I signed out of youtube app and went to sign back in, all three accounts were available to choose from!
This info isn't easy to find on the web so just updating in case anyone else is looking for the solution
