[Q] help pulling files from a backup without the device - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a backup from my old s3 through twrp recovery that I need to pull files from. specifically a thread of text messages. I no longer have the s3 or access to one. this is extremely important as it will be used as evidence in a custody battle for my youngest son. I'm thinking there is a way to emulate the s3 on my windows computer from there I can save the xml file and send it to myself somehow. any and all help would be much appreciated.

[Q] Deleted pictures/videos recovery

Unrooted LTE Galaxy Nexus here - thought I was deleting a picture from my gallery, turned out it was a folder. Lost a bunch of videos and pics I would love to get back. Tried a bunch of recovery programs, but they all need a mapped drive letter to work. Google+ backed up some of the pics/and videos but most are not there (also have no idea how to get them back into the phone...) Anyone have any suggestions? I would rather not root, and it this stage its probably too late any way. Thanks!
I dont know how easy data recovery is on flash memory.. For physical disks I have always used Ontrack EasyRecovery Pro. It isnt cheap, but it has restored stuff that I did full pass wipes on.
Thanks for the response - there are a ton of recovery software out there, that will work great on the flash memory. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, they rely on the attached storage to be mapped as drive in Win 7, and the retarded MTA usb connection doesn't allow that for Galaxy Nexus...
You can use dd to create an image of the Galaxy Nexus Flash memory (just the sdcard folder), and use that image as input to a recovery program that supports it. There is a very good and powerful one for linux, its name is foremost. I know it might be difficult if you dont use linux but I sure recommend it.
Here is a tutorial on foremost on Ubuntu linux.

EDIT: I dont know if you have to be rooted to use the dd command to create an image.
Interesting idea, thanks! There are Windows image creating software like Daemon Tools that seems to do same job. I wonder though if the image will carry over the deleted files if they are not seen by the Android OS...

Recover your lost files??is a dream for GN?

Hello there,
it is one of the best phone and the easiest to recover or update in my opinion but,
the issue of no memory card is really something bad for your files in case if something happened to the phone!
i know backup is so important but what if you phone crashed all of the sudden because of an application update and you will enter in the repeated boot loops and you have to reset the phone or flash new software!!
OH! Then your will loose everything in the mobile !
it is really sad it happened to me twice in2 weeks i lost allot of good pictures.
i am sure most of the phone users tried to recover the lost files and no one could do it because the phone is identified as MTP, no logical letter drive can be assigned to the phone!!!
All recover software’s couldn’t find the phone and even when i tried hexcomp from the market to recover the pictures, couldn’t do it.
my question for our developers is there any scripts can make the phone work as usb when it is switched off ??
or ,
is there any way to assign a logical drive to the phone instead of MTP so we can recover the lost files?
I don’t know why Goggle didn’t think of such problem because it happened to allot of people and I am not used to back up my files before because there were in memory card.
I really hope the developers will work on such issue because this is the worst thing I found it in the phone.
I might be wrong but I think you can pull everything off the phone using adb whilst in recovery mode?
Dropbox.
It can sync pictures as soon as you take them.
You can sync files between multiple devices, including uploading and downloading to your phone.
Titanium Backup can be synced to drop box.
Check it out,

Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus.
i tried Pull before it took long time without doing nothing
i know dropbox and i know what it do
i am asking the DEVELOPERS:
1-is there any scripts can make the phone work as usb when it is switched off ??
2-is there any way to assign a logical drive to the phone instead of MTP so we can recover the lost files?
Thanks

Theoretically you probably could write a CWM script to create a virtual folder and mount that as USB media via CWM. But it would require loading the script to the phone via ADB anyways.

[Q] File Recovery (Pictures) - MTP

Hi guys,
I really need your help on this one.
I have searched the forums and the web for a full day now and it seems that I am not alone with my problem here:
Last night I used Solid Explorer to create a subfolder with pictures within the Camera folder. I then tried to move that folder somewhere else on the "SD Card".
But when the process was finished, the subfolder was empty and all the pictures were gone. I could still see the thumbnails in the Camera folder, but when I tried to open one of them, they also all just disappeared!
Now I have read several threads here on xda about the problems of file recovery on a MTP device... Seems like normal file recovery programs will not be of any help in this case.
However I was hoping, that by now someone came up with a solution to this problem, since it affects all users of the GNex.
Some more infos on my side:
The phone runs 4.0.4, is not rooted and not unlocked - everything is stock.
Data back up via Google Plus and Dropbox was not possible, since I am on holidays in Asia with no data plan or WiFi available.
I have switched the phone to flight mode and (hopefully) not written any new data on the storage.
So my questions would be the following:
1) Has anybody yet found a way to asign a physical drive letter to the GNex, making it possible to be recognized by regular file recovery software?
Or is anybody currrently looking into that matter, trying to find a solution?
2) In case that I will not be able to recover the pictures myself through some pc software off the net, will I be able to let some professional have my files restored for me? If I understand correctly, all it takes is a software, that is able to recognize a ext3 or ext4 storage system???
I would really appreciate any help on this matter, because these pictures mean a lot to me and I really hope that I will be able to get them back somehow.
Thanks in advance,
Patrick.
Edit: Argh! First post and I got it wrong already! Sorry, I meant to post this in the Q/A section but ended up posting it in General :-/
I had to format my sd card losing 13GB of information yesterday. This was also due to stupid mtp. Sorry i doubt you can recover.
Sorry to hear that! Until now I could never understand the objections many people seemed to have concerning MTP, as it handled pretty much the same as an USB device when using a Windows PC. But now that I gained some insight in the matter, it's probably the ONE thing I don't like about this phone.
It just sucks to find that out the hard way...
But maybe somebody else still has an idea and can point me in the right direction?
I've had the same problem, and I'm blaming MTP as well. I finally gave up, formatted my drive and replaced MTP with cloud services or transferring files via adb.

[Q] Can I copy old phone app info to a new phone?

Here is the deal, my daughter broke the screen on her s3 including the digitizer. I am able to to a copy and paste of the entire phone contents to my computer as a backup. When we pick up a new phone for her as we are up for a new contract on one of our phones can I copy the saved app progress to her new phone? Replacing the phone with a new one is cheaper than the 180.00 they want to replace the digitizer. Any help appreciated.

yes, you can. If your phone is rooted, use Titanium backup to backup those apps, and of course your new phone needs to be rooted in order to restore those apps
secondly, if your phone is not rooted, and if the apps is automatically backed up by google or facebook, just sync it on your old phone and then restore them on your new phones by syncing it, other than that, no you can't backup those apps
Summary:
1. Rooted phones, you can literally backup almost everything
2. non-rooted phones, unless google or facebook back those apps up, other than that, nothing can be done. Note that some apps only work for certain phone.
3. for both rooted and non-rooted, you can copy contents such as documents, pictures, apk, video, etc.. from old phones to new phones

I have titanium backup on the old phone as it is rooted. But without being able to actually see the screen I am at a loss. I was able to get past her lockscreen to be able to back up whats on her phone but thats about it.
The only possibility I can think of is to copy the db file to the correct folder on the new device. It may not be readable though, depending on what device you get. You could copy it to another S3 though and then export to a vCard file.
Did she have everything automatically backup to her Google account though? If so, when she signs in on the new device it should restore from there.

Her account is the same as mine on Play. If she downloads the apps again I'm assuming she'll have to start from scratch. My best hope is to be able to copy and paste into a new phone.
This is where the files are located if you decide to try. The best chance of it working would be on another Samsung device. No idea if it'll be able to be read on anything else though.
But if all else fails, you can try to manually copy the data out of the .db file.

Problem solved. spent $145 to get glass and digitizer replaced. Daughter happy all is good:cyclops:
And in the end, that is all that really matters!

[Q] Phone 'reset'

I know this is a forum for professional developers, but I can't seem to get straight answers or help elsewhere.
My phone 'reset' itself. By that I mean the battery went dead, I plugged into a charger and turned it on and it acted as if I had just gotten the phone. I had to resign in through google, etc...
Of course, all my apps where gone, as well as, files - including my contacts. These were not backed up to google - please don't bother chastising me for it - I get it. I had thought they were backed up to my laptop via the Samsung Kies app, but apparently not.
Having said all that, the device memory is full with the bulk (10.46GB) in Miscellaneous files. I assume these are all my from before the reset. However, I cannot get access to these files. I have tried to download the TWRP from apps store and there is not enough memory on the device.
Am I to assume that I have to Root the device to be able to manipulate the files, either by messing with the internal clock and/or moving the files to the SD card, doing a hard reset, then restoring the files to the phone?
Is rooting the device something a newbie like me can do?
I'm pretty desperate and would prefer to be pointed in the right direction, rather than scold for being an idiot and not backing up the phone and/or any of the plethora of things I should have done to keep me from this situation.
I found a video seems somewhat helpful (forum rules prevent me from posting link, apparently), but I cannot find all the files I'm supposed to have to complete the process.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
