OTA lolipop downgrade? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

was liking to try the official lolipop release for the sprint note 2 (sphl900), but incase i dont like it was liking to downgrade back to my rooted rwilco's 4.4.2. as of now i have philz recovery a full nandroid and a TB full back up. i am not worried about warranty or knox. as i bought phone used and have no insurance. just flashed a CW release 5.0.3 or something close to that(latest nightly) and so far like it. its just missing stuff i need (want), so i figure i would try the official. and last question is ext. sd card permission still a issue? renaming file properties? (.p3 .mp4 .ini ect ect) and update prl/profile?
thanX in advance.
(any recommendations?)

[q]remove clockwork recovery

is there a way to remove clockwork recovery? my wife's phone has s-off and recovery, but she wants to keep it stock and use the OTA upgrade.
You should really check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161411
I just flashed this over my stock froyo. Worked flawlessly, didn't lose any apps or anything. Removes all the VZW bloat and runs perfectly.
One thing to note, I believe you'll have to manually update your radio to the newest version but it's no big deal.
You can find the newest radio here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134451
From what I've read the radio that comes with the OTA is 20.27W.30.0811U_1.09.01.0622 unless someone can tell me I'm wrong.
i know all about that. but i still would like to know how to go back to stock recovery if possible.

You'll have to reflash the RUU and overwrite CWM with the stock recovery image once more.
If you don't mind me asking is there a reason why?
The only way I'd even consider doing this is if you're going to return the phone or if there's something wrong with it.
Why not just flash the official OTA that RMK put together and then flash the new radio?
It's EXACTLY the same thing minus the verizon bloat apps, heck it even runs faster than the stock OTA.
Do you flash the new radio like you would a new rom?

No, There's a certain way you have to do it. Pretty easy BUT you have to check the MD5 to make sure it's not corrupt, otherwise you'll brick.
put the P32IMG.zip file onto the root of your sd card. Boot into hboot by holding vol down and power on startup.
It'll search your sd card and then ask to update. press power to update. It'll reboot when finished.

The issue is that if you flash the new OTA you'll lose root for the foreseable future. Currently most are unsure if it will undo the s-off and in the process you may lose the ability to root until a new exploit is found.
Read the first thread that is stickied on this forum about the OTA.

There's an app in the android market called AFV (android file verifier) that allows you to check the md5 sum of files you download directly on your phone. I would suggest you install that app and make sure the md5 matches the radio file you downloaded before flashing the radio as changing radios has much more potential to brick your phone entirely that traditional rom flashing.
this is for my wife's phone. mine is running CM7. my concern is that if i go forward with a rooted gingerbread, i won't be able to return her to full stock recovery and rom later. i don't want to do anything to her phone i can't undo later. is there a path for that after upgrading to the rooted stock rom?

Of course, it can always be undone later on. However, if you do the OTA update then you will not be able to root until a different exploit has been found.
This is why we're trying to get you to go the route of the rooted stock rom.
Just follow the directions in the first 2 posts of that thread and she'll be as stock as she got the phone (Minus having root, it being faster, etc....)
what's the rollback if we want to go full stock. no root, no CWM - stock enough to send to verizon.
I understand about the wife issues. My widest inc2 arrives in a few day. My plan is root and stock debloated Rom for her. She won't even know its not stock. That way when she wants sense 3.0 I can give it to her. If she knows I never hear the end of it.

I figured it had a modem either way. sucks cause now we have to switch roms or go i317m stock until upadetes are out so we dont keep getting updates....or just delete the updater from the system using a root app like titanium backup (I use it to delete everything I dont want with a rom I flash) probly the easiest way right now if we dont wanna switch roms or chance an update bricking.

Do you have titanium backup pro? If not its definitely worth the few bucks to spring for it. Then instead of deleting the updater app you can freeze instead. That its still on your phone in case you ever need it for something yet it freezes it which will stop the the update pop up. I used to delete all my bloat ware to but then if a update comes like this one that is ota only all you need to do is unfreeze those apps and flash the stock recovery. Now if you want the update patch for the kernel without the modem you can find it here on xda and flash just the kernel. Thats what I did instead of fixing my phone back just for that small update. If you want the modem to you can also find it here on xda and flash it separately as I did. Its a way better modem than the first. My signal strength nearly doubled after I flashed it........

[Q] Unable to flash Stock ROM

I bought a T-Mobile Galaxy S 3 LTE with model number SGH-T999L. I used Odin V3 1.85 to flash TWRP recovery and CyanogenMod 10.0.0.
Everything went well but my camera doesn't work. On launching the camera, I get a "Can't connect to camera" error and it quits. The same behavior is observed when using other camera apps. I tried the instructions in this thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239414) but it did not fix my problem. I now want to go back to my stock ROM. I successfully downloaded and flashed stock recovery using Odin. However, Odin fails when I try to flash the stock ROM obtained from the samsung website. It gives me a "write failed" error and stops. Any tips or suggestions to help me out would be appreciated. Thanks
Is it supposed to use T999 firmware?
Only odin flash T999L firmware. I dont see it released yet at samsing-updates.com though.

Why not reflash the stock ODIN flash rom and make sure it all works ok for you, that will tell you exactly what the problem is.
If the stock rom is working properly, then there is only one thing left which is the culprit and that is the CM10/AOKP/AOSP
or PORTED roms which many people seem to like flashing.
The CM10/AOKP/AOSP and ported roms are excellent if you are a developer or if you like to do a lot of experimentation with your phone.
So the thing to do now is reboot your phone to recovery mode, do a "Factory Reset", "Wipe Cache", "Wipe System" and "Wipe Dalvik".
When that's done Open Odin and put the stock rooted T999 Tmobile Jellybean 4.1.2 into Odin's PDA slot, go into download mode
and once you see Odin is connected to the phone start the flash. Have patience for the phone to boot after its done flashing.
Here is the stock rooted Odin flash T999 Tmobile Jellybean 4.1.2 rom that you can download if you like: T999_UVDMD5
Official JB Firmware - Latest JB 4.1.2 Firmware
My suggestion to you is to only flash Samsung T999 Tmobile stock based Jellybean 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 roms in the future.
But who am I to say whats best..... This is just my personal opinion...... Which usually is not worth a dime. LOL

I am a newbie. I thought the T999 was the same as the T999L. That would explain why Odin doesnt flash stock T999 onto my device. Can anyone here post a link to the stock SGH-T999L ROM?
Just did a quick check and I dont see that the firmware has been made available for download yet.
If you want stock I would flash one of the stock based custom roms via recovery for now.
Out of curiosity, what is your current baseband version?

I had the same issue with the same phone. Got it 2 weeks ago haha. Did you happen to make a backup first using CWM Recovery? If so, you can just restore that backup and you'll have your camera functionality back. It's pretty annoying switching back and forth from CM10.1 back to stock just to take pictures but Rom manager makes it pretty quick and effortless.
Actually now that I think of it, they prob wont release the original firmware. Seems like the first build is never available, only when an update is released do we get firmware we csn download.
I am working with another member on getting something going for the T999L, but right now we are stuck until a verified safe method of rooting is found. (Dont want to flash a recovery or cf autoroot w/o knowing it wont screw something up)
Itll happen, but we just gotta be patient.
Just reread the op and see that you say you flashed TWRP. So you were able to initially gain root without any problems?

I used Odin to flash Clockwork Mod recovery first. I did not like Clockwork Mod's interface and reflashed with TWRP. I had no problems to gain root with either of these methods. I also tried Cyanogenmod stable 10.0.0 and then 10.1 RC2 without any problems. As far as I can tell, all apps work except for the camera. One word of caution though. As you can see from my posts, I am new and dont know what I am doing. I might have just gotten lucky since my device is still unbricked. I had only one "scary" moment during the entire process. I used TWRP to wipe my phone clean and was stuck with no OS install file. ADB sideload did not work since it could not recognize the device at that point. Luckily, I had a micro SD card lying around and was able to put in a new OS install file using my laptop and then TWRP was able to handle it.

[Q] Need help upgrading Android if possible?

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 GT-N5110 wifi version using CF-Auto-Root. It is running Android 4.1.2 and now that the new tablets have come out ie; 8.4" tab, note 12.1 2014 edition etc., I don't think there's much hope for Samsung to update the OS as the device has been out for approx 14 months.
So anyway I rooted because I was low on memory and wanted to move some apps to ext SD card. However being on Android 4.1.2 I believe is the reason I still cannot do this. Any apps I have downloaded from the Play Store won't let me do this. I have read online that this feature was added in higher version of Android. From what I have read 4.3 is more stable than 4.2.2.
Wondering if there is any way I can get Android 4.3 on my device? I have read a bit about 'cyanogenMod's' and 'clockwork recovery' and don't really understand much about it yet.
Is there any way for me to re-root my device so that I will have Android 4.3? If so, would I have to un-root it first before rooting again?
This Note 8 tablet is the second device I rooted. The first was my S3 phone which was great after rooting as I just wanted to freeze the bloatware using Titanium Backup Pro which I did. Love it. But with the Note 8, rooting it has not achieved what I need so far. Hoping someone can help this almost newbie!!
There is no 4.3 for our device the only thing that is out there right now is the ported version of 4.3 made available to us by @ykkfive found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2642647 there are some rumors that we might get Kit-Kat 4.4 so IMHO I think they are going to bypass 4.3 all together for our device, but again those are just rumors.
As far as custom recovery goes I would suggest you look into Philz recovery made available to us by @Phil3759 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860
Hoping this help

Unroot and push 4.2.2, all your issues will be solved. I tried custom ROMs and found stock 4.2.2 works just fine, without Google Music Player update or just disable it all together.
PS, use saferoot.zip next time... it does not require flashing, and will not break your device from using OTA or Kies for firmware updates.
Now you need to run triangle away to clear your flash counter before removing root.
Two things:
One: the current version is 4.2.2. If you are running 4.1, there is an update available
Two: Samsung stated that there will be an update to KK for our devices.
There has never been a 4.3 ROM for our device, nor is there a compelling reason to have one. Plenty of KK ROMs in the development section though, although I really didn't care for any of the ones I tried. The only way I know to root this device is with CF Autoroot, and that is also what worked for me. I am not sure why it did not work for you. Once you root, you can do everything you've been able to do with your S3.
Thank you for the helpful replies.
@gooberdude I guess the first thing I need to do from what you're saying is use Triangle Away to reset the counter. Then to unroot. No clue how to do this, but I guess I've got a lot of searching to do to find out. Any help would be appreciated!
You mention to 'push' 4.2.2. It is not available either over the air or through kies. So, how do I do this? Again help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Yes use triangle away to reset counter then if you not already have done so download and install Odin 1.85
Next search the stock firmware for your model here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Get your Note into download mode ( Press and keep holding the Volume Down, Home and Power ) and connect it to your PC, Odin should "see" it the first slot under ID:slot should turn a different color if so you are in good shape, now put the Firmware you download from above mentioned site click PDA*button and select the downloaded .tar.md5 file, Important: In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options are enabled. Also, ensure that the Re-partition checkbox is not enabled and hit start and let Odin do the rest and you should be up and running in no time

So I've been doing a lot of searching and reading online before doing more to my Note 8 tablet. Cause if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have rooted it.
Anyway, I have seen a YouTube video of how you can unroot your phone (tablet - any Android) using Super SU. I assume I should use Triange Away first then do that. Then there are 3 files I need to remove: /system/bin/su + /system/xbin/su + /system/app/Superuser.apk.
Then of course remove any apps that I installed that required root access like Greenify, Busybox Free, Multiwindow Manager etc.
So if I do that it sounds like I will be back to a warrantied fully stock Note 8.
SO MY QUESTION THEN: How do I upgrade my firmware to 4.2.2 and if I do will I be voiding the 2 year warranty I have bearing in mind I will have unrooted my device?

If you download a stock Rom and flash it with Odin from one of those sites I mentioned before you will be on 4.2.2 it will flash a full stock firmware, and therefore you do not have to "upgrade" your firmware, so in short if you use triangle away and flash a stock Rom your Note will be like the day you first broke the seal and took it out of the box.
Now if you decide to get 4.1.2 then you could "update" to 4.2.2 by going to... settings...about device...software update...update and let the device look for an update and let it install.
Hoping this helps

Wha??? If you have stock ROM and it is rooted... run trianagle away, and have it clear out your counter. Once cleared you can verify then do a factory reset after you boot to home screen. Once reset, you will have a clean like new OS load. then you can push an OTA with settings, about device, check for updates. If you flashed
Of course you have to USE triangle away but isn't that what I already had stated above when I said go the Odin way and flash a stock Rom?
And also generally speaking, a factory reset does not always erase data stored on the internal or external sd card. This data must be manually erased by formatting the sd cards.

I rooted using CF-Auto-Root so that I could use apps like app2sd to free up some space on the internal 16gb (9 or 10 gb available to user) by moving apps to ext sd card. I did not add a mod or recovery or anything else after rooting. I am in Canada and there are no OTA updates available for the Note 8. So I am stuck at Android 4.1.2. After I rooted I realized that what I really need is at least Android 4.2.2 in order to move apps to ext SD card.
So, ideally, what I'd really like to do is unroot my device after using Triange Away, delete the 3 leftover files I mentioned earlier, and then delete any apps that require root. I have a warranty until February 2016 and I'd really like to be able to use it if necessary as I've heard that some have had battery issues after several months use. ANYWAY, is there any way I can stay unrooted, and yet upgrade the OS to 4.2.2 (which does not seem to be available here in Canadan-I guess we're stuck at 4.1.2. Even if 4.4.2 KitKat becomes available it will not help me with my low storage issue as KitKat stops apps from writing to ext SD Card. SO, I really prefer to have 4.2.2.
I am assuming all the instructions everyone has offered me above all have me remain rooted? Would I be able to remain rooted, upgrade to 4.2.2 then use Triangle Away and unroot?
Sorry for the long winded post, just wanted to clarify a few things.
The ONLY way for you to get 4.2.2 if you are not able to get an O.T.A..... is too USE triangle away as @gooberdude has stated AND donwload and Flash a 4.2.2 Stock Rom with Odin from one of the site that I gave you above, you will NOT be rooted after you flash the Stock Rom and you should not have any warranty issues at all.
Hoping this will clear things up

@Harjan112 Yes thanks! That answers my question!

Of course you have to USE triangle away but isn't that what I already had stated above when I said go the Odin way and flash a stock Rom?
And also generally speaking, a factory reset does not always erase data stored on the internal or external sd card. This data must be manually erased by formatting the sd cards.

I know a factory reset will not erase SD storage... As for that, really there should not be any thing there the system needs to operate. So what ever is on SD is not important to the OS.
As for getting root without flashing... Saferoot.zip. I have it installed and never had to use Triangle away. the nice thing about it, is that OTA and Kies will allow firmware updates. So, when updates become available, I'll be able to update.
If the OP would backup the important stuff he needs, and just do a factory reset, he should have a near factory untouched OS. This will allow OTA and Kies to function. Then all he needs to do is set USB debug in developer options and run saferoot.zip from a windows pc or laptop. As an option install rootcloak and substrate apps to truly hide root from apps that may detect it. Once done your rooted device will be just as upgradable as a factory device.

So have you tried flashing already? I have the same problem in Brazil, OTA / Kies never detects an update to 4.1.2... And I don't even rooted or anything that could impact the process.
@gooberdude I like your idea of using safe root but I don't understand what 'flashing' means nor what cloakroom is although I am guessing it's an app? Also what are substrate apps? @fmachado2906 as I said I don't know what flashing means.
Why does Samsung send some countries an update but not others? It's frustrating.

@Festivale26 flashing = downloading the firmware, opening Odin, setting up the firmware there and clicking on Start, not necessarily in this same order =)
By the way I'm tired of waiting, just downloading 4.2.2 and will try later.. I'll let you know how it went.

Official KitKat for Canadian GS3 variants out now?

Is this for real??
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=31062
Yes it is. KitKat is now available for the Canadian Note II and S III.
It is real! :victory:
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 upgrade to KitKat now available to download
Now, the real question is : is the bootloader locked ?!
Waiting rooted stock ROM:fingers-crossed:
Telus made their available earlier today, and Bell's is out now.
On a side note, does anyone know how to get the update on a rooted device? I just rooted mine a few weeks ago. Still running stock ROM, but nothing I've tried seems to work.

Forget it, you won't be able to get it through official OTA.
Once you're rooted, your only way to update is to wait for someone to create a flashable zip of the update, flash the entire ROM by downloading from samfirmware or wait for a custom ROM.

Tried updating over KIES - what an ordeal. Had to run through emergency recovery twice but finally got it. I wasn't using root access for a great deal - basically lose out on Greenify automanaging and being able to revoke permissions. I can live with that for a while.
I hear towelroot for the s5 works with the kk update.

KIES doesn't want to recognise my device and Odin is... either stuck on flashing system.img.ext4 or taking really long... heh
EDIT: Changed USB port and Cable and it flashed properly...
Great News!
That's really a great news!!! Anyone planning to make a flashable zipfile for this rom without the bootloader and knox? I preserve 4.1.2 bootloader on my phone since 4.3 came out. So far, is this update good ?? i heard battery life not really good...
Thanks guys!
Has anyone tried installing the firmware using Mobile Odin and using the Everroot option?
I'm not really willing to try it for myself as this is my daily driver phone...
I wouldn't recommend this update. I updated this morning and everything seemed fine until I tried running Waze on the way home from work. My device was plugged into power as it usually is, but now on this new version my battery is actually discharging WHILE connected to power.
Now to look into rolling back. This is a deal breaker.
Edit: And for the record, this drain is confirmed on two different Galaxy S3's in our house.

Dis you update via OTA or odin with data wipe?
Sent from my SGH-I747M using XDA Free mobile app
I just installed update. I was rooted running flashed stock 4.4.3 rom... I used Android Toolkit from skipsoft and it worked..
I tried different ODIN versions with no joy.. Using the Android Toolkit somehow when it loaded ODIN the flash to stock 4.4.3 worked...
UPDATE: I disabled AVG while using toolkit, i had not using odin orginally it may be related to my issu
Be careful using the toolkit. Its been known to brick devices and cause other problems as well.
Yay. Pretty much the same as using any method I suppose. Got lucky I guess.
Is this new bootloader is locked to prevent downgrading to another bootloader ???
Its not "locked" (meaning you can still flash custom recoveries and kernels), but I fully expect it'll be the same as before with regard to downgrading.

Ok. So downgrading from 4.4 bootloader to 4.3 should not work i guess??? . Another question, With 4.4 bootloader, is it possible to flash a 4.3 Rom ???
Correct. Provided its like 4.3, you can only flash the same or newer firmware.
I believe you should still be able to flash older roms like before, but have not seen this confirmed yet.
