[Q] ROM Problem, HELP! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So I was messing around with some ROMs to see which one I liked. But when I installed the SlimLP Rom my phone started acting weird. First it would just shut down and then I couldn't even get into recovery. I finally got into recovery after using ODIN and now I want to get rid of this ROM and im getting an error message that says this phone is an sghi727, MY PHONE IS DEFINATELY A sght989. Help me. Im so confused. This is all new to me.

Did you try going into your recovery and wiping data/factory reset, cache, and dalvick. Then flashing a new rom or did you just dirty flash?

Restore to stock rom is one option.
See this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541783

The reason it might have that model number in build.prop is because most ROMs from the AT&T S2 work just fine on the T-Mobile S2 and the ROM dev doesn't make two ROMs with the only difference being the model number. If you can get into recovery, you can do a full wipe and install another ROM. Make sure you are using the latest recovery. I recommend TWRP, as it is touch screen and very user friendly.

AOSP roms will NOT run! Driving me crazy...

So, first off, just wanna say that I have a RIDICULOUS amount of experience with flashing roms. Literally over 100 different devices and 1000s of different flashes of my own devices on top of it. Quite familiar with this S2 as well and have customized them to all sorts of extents, but this one has me baffled. This phone refuses to run 4.2.2/4.3/4.4.x roms. Using the most up to date radio and the suggested TWRP (2.6.1.0) as well as CWM 6.0.44 and the newer TWRP: 2.6.3.0. Every time the phone will get to the set up screen, refreeze and boot. No issues running stock or stock based 4.1.2 roms. I've tried changing recoveries, wiping everything (/system, /data, /caches) repeatedly, Odin back to stock and redoing everything, switching kernels, wiping caches before rebooting and leaving it be, changing batteries, etc but nothing has worked. So far I've tried BlackLiquid 2.92 (4.2.2 stable), Awesome Audio rom (4.3), official CM11 (whatever the last build up was last night), and BeanStalk 4.4.2 (12/16) and all behave exactly the same - freeze on start up and reboot. This doesn't seem to be much of a widespread issue obviously, so just baffled and getting a bit frustrated as this should have been a 20 minute process that has turned into a few hours already. Since USB Debugging isn't on by default on newer roms, how would I even do a logcat to see if there is anything meaningful there? Any ideas?
Update: I have another S2. Performed same steps, same TWRP, same radio and rom, on same external SD card and that one booted right up like normal confirming that it is the phone itself, but what causes that?? Corrupted partitions?
I have the same problem, just format your internal and external sd card with just ROM file on your storage then try to install, than please inform me

Nope. No luck there (only tried Beanstalk so far, but exact same issue). Thanks for the suggestion though! Only using internal storage, no SD card, though thinking I might try that next...
Edit: Just to be thorough, I formatted internal storage via TWRP and my computer then readded the files and just tried to boot rom only and freezes before I can do anything.
Do you by chance have a refurbished s2?
The screen has been replaced by a friend of mine and he managed to mess up the soft keys with it, but everything else functions. That's actually why he sent it to me, so I could hook him up with Pie and all that kind of thing so the soft keys aren't an issue. What's your thoughts on the refurb side of it?

ok lets stat it with this
1) download both the scripts of infamous wipe cache and infamous super wipe.
2) format your both SD card with PC (FAT32)
2) put both these wipe files and and your rom file ( i prefer try slimbean rom first)
3) Now in twrp 2.6.0.0- follow the steps
i) format your phone with twrp options
ii) again format your phone with infamous super file. (by going in to INSTALL ZIP file option in TWRP)
iii) than format with infamouse cache file (by going in to INSTALL ZIP file option in TWRP)
iv) install your rom and compatiable GAPPS zip file.
v) after installing or somewhere between procedure if twrp says something about supersu birnaries are not correct than click on DO . NOT FIX
vi) again format infamouse cache wipe.
vii) now FINALLY reboot the rom.
it should work, and it worked for me. if u sucessfully run the rom than you can eailsy run all the AOSP roms in this forum. Again If you try this please do tell me what happend.
Followed to a "T" and still in the same boat - freezes after bootup. I used those same steps before with another darkside wipe script (maybe older?) but yea, have already been down that road. I did downgrade to 2.6.0.0 and used Slim 4.3 because 4.4 is supposed to use the newer TWRP, just to be certain, but GRRR. I guess we're just gonna have to settle for a 4.1.2 rom and call it a day. :/
So here are the log output from the wipes:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9903887/INFAMOUS.CACHE.WIPE_recovery.log
I see some stuff at the bottom of those that might indicate something weird, but I am not adept at interpreting these, so just wondering if someone could point me to the right direction about the repair checks and what not listed on these. Thanks!
Edit 2: I did get a AOSP based 4.1.2 rom to boot with no problems! wtf... LoL
Last Edit:
Problem solved! I used basically the same steps I had been doing but once the AOSP 4.1.2 rom booted then now everything works like it should again. Have loaded a 4.3 and 4.4 rom successfully. Thanks for the help!

Interesting, so you're saying it's phone specific?
That begs to ask other questions now:
1. Where did this phone come from? is it a Tmobile version (SGH-T989) or AT&T (i-1900)?
2. You mentioned you got it from a friend; did it come rooted? unlocked? Or did you have to do that process yourself?

Yep, very much phone specific. Used same recovery, same rom zip and gapps off the same external SD card, to be certain. That one updated just like every other S2 I've done. And it's the Tmo version. The At&t models are i777 S2 or i727 S2 Skyrocket. The i9100 is international and has a physical home button. But the phone was not modified at all. No root, custom recovery, etc. I was only able to resolve it by first starting with an AOSP 4.1.2 rom and working my way up to 4.4. One of the weirder issues I've come across.

What did you exactly do? I flashed a 4.1.2 and then flashed a 4.3 based ROM and it didn't work. What recovery version did you use to flash the 4.3 ROM?

Sorry, I don't pay attention to the notifications on XDA very often. I don't usually browse the S2 forums unless needed because I have an N5, but anyway... The 4.1.2 rom you used, was it TW or AOSP type? I used 2.6.0 to wipe everything, then used cache and superwipe zips then 4.1.2 AOSP type rom then cache wipe zip again then after that booted, I was able to go back to 2.6.1 and flash a 4.3 via wiping, wipe zips, installing rom then cache wipe again. After that, repeated with a KK rom and now it loads roms just like it should. If you want more precise help, feel free to hit me up on Hangouts with my username: es0tericcha0s. Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be when it gets a little out of whack like this...
I'm in the same boat
Same here. I just bought a galaxy s2 from my friend (tmobile version) and I too get stuck in a bootloop no matter what rom I use. It boots up freezes then reboots 7 keeps doing that endelessly. I've even wiped using twrp & darkside then reflashed the stock rom in odin, but no luck. strangely it only happens on the cellular network, otherwise it works fine on wifi. But when I turn off the wifi and go to the cellular network I can't even turn on the wifi anymore and still stuck in this boot loop It's wierd and frustrating.

Hmm. That's interesting... This is happening on the stock rom - where you turn on cellular data and it reboots? Definitely a different issue than the one I was having. Which stock rom were you flashing via Odin? Have you tried other versions of the stock rom and had the same problem?

This was happening on any rom I used (Cm 10.2 stable, Cm 11 nightly, AOKP & Super Nexus 3.0 which is Android 4.3) I can't really speak for the stock rom (tmo 4.1.2) since I've never used it for more that 5 minutes, sigh but I'll try it and see if it gives me the same problem :/
Are you guys flashing gapps if the ROM you're installing doesn't have it?

I just started working on a VZW S3 on T-Mobile service that has this issue. Happens on stock VZW 4.1.2, stock T-Mobile 4.1.2 rom, custom 4.1.2 T-Mobile rom, and stable CM 10.2. Weirdest thing... full wipes including /system inbetween each flash. Changed the modem too. Nothing helps. Pretty sure it's a bad board at this stage.
Cool beans, 0! Having this exact problem, will try your method for my s2, btw which aosp 4.1.2 did u use? Can I get a link? Thanks been having the problem for a few months now and just gave up haha, been super thirsty for that beanstalk kk build
One last thing can u also provide a link to the 4.3 that u used? I really want it to work and want to follow what u did to the , megabyte

Need help ASAP -- Bootloop

OK, so I went into TWRP 2.6.0.0 and tried to flash CM 10.2. It came up with an error so I restored using the backup I had made, and after the restore it told me that root permissions had been lost, and asked if I wanted to fix it. I swiped to rix root permissions, and now it doesn't seem to be able to boot up.
It gets through the boot animation fine, bu gets stuck on the final screen where it flashes SAMSUNG across the screen. I can boot back into TWRP and have tried wiping data and starting fresh, installing a different ROM, everything I can to try to get it to start fresh, but the phone always gets stuck at the same screen flashing SAMSUNG.
Any ideas of what I should do to remedy this problem??

Start fresh again but this time in TWRP goto wipe/system that will rid all old rom files which sounds like your issue, worth a shot

Hopefully I can get a fast response here, I did that, but got a warning "No OS installed" before rebooting. Is that just telling me no ROM installed or does that literally mean that there is not an OS on the phone anymore? The second option seems unlikely but I don't want to risk it and mess things up even further.

well after you wipe everything including system you need to install a rom. IF your NOT currently OTA updated to 4.3 use billard's zip:::::
[ROM/RESTORE][!MD4 OTA!](5-10)Quick Return to UNROOTED STOCK WITH FLASH COUNT RESET
Wipe everything :/system
Flash billards zip
Flash root.zip to keep root
Flash recovery zip to keep custom recovery
reboot

It also wipes the system partition for you.

Shouldnt be getting any errors installing/switching roms if your wiping correctly, If native tether is all your after then most if not all custom roms come with it enabled or you can keep stock rom and just flash the hotspot mod [MOD][Deodex][Odex][MB1][MC3][MD4][MK3]Hotspot Mod - Working 4G

I'm just as confused as anyone as to why I'm getting errors. The phone has proper root access and is running on TWRP, the same recovery I use on my One, and I have done at least 50-60 flashes of ROMs on that phone, without issue. I keep getting virtually the same error, something wrong with executing the updater binary in zip.

[Q] Rooted phone accepted KitKat OTA and Bricked Phone

Hey guys, I'm REALLY hoping someone can help me. My phone was rooted on 4.3 and I stupidly accepted the KitKat OTA update without unrooting, and now my phone wont boot pass the AT&T logo. I have tried factory data wipe, doing an emergency firmware recovery on kies, tried flashing a stock rom on odin, and tried putting stock update on sd card and doing it that way, but it either wont flash or STILL wont boot past the at&t logo. Besides the root access, everything on my phone was stock. I just want to be able to use my phone again! Can someone please help me? I NEED my phone lol
I just installed a custom recovery. Now what?
Have you waited a bit for the boot process to go through it took me like 5 minutes after a ota to KK.....IF the little att chime at the att logo by all means it should boot
yeah I let it sit like half an hour...
Did you get the att chime?

Can you boot into your custom recovery? If you can, try flashing a custom KK ROM.
yes I get the AT&T chime. sometimes the chime is real choppy tho. what KK rom should I flash?
Any of your choice
do you recommend any? Im new to custom firmwares on android
Try Carbon or Valudus.
Thanks Guys! I installed a custom ROM and its working like new! I dont think I can ever get stock back, but I dont see much of a difference. Now that my warranty is gone, whats the benefits of having a custom ROM and what one has the best features? I am on hyperdrive ATM, but I would like a good kitkat rom
same issue, only....
I can not get ANY rom to get past the boot screen,.... I have no idea why it is getting stuck...
I have tried CM - various nightlies and screenshots. validus, c-rom, all to no avail.
i am going nuts over here...any one know what I might be doing wrong?
i have tried all the formating, cache, dalvik wipe, format system, reset all user data etc....
could it be a kernel I need?

[Q] HELP! i747 cant recover or flash

So my wifes i747 was running 4.0.4 so I decided to upgrade it for her a bit. Im not new to rooting and flashing roms so I figured why not just put a custom KK rom onto it in order to freshen it up a bit for her. I also have to add that it is a ATT S3 unlocked and being used on Tmobile network.
Came to the forums and downloaded SlimKat rom and installed CWM and flashed the new rom. Everything went fine, but in the end my wife didnt like the feel of it and just wanted a new phone. So I traded her my phone and got hers. Well i wasnt a huge fan of the SlimKat rom either, nothing particularly wrong I was just always a CyanogenMod fan. Im having issues right now because I cannot get it to flash any new ROMs without messing up. Ill either get an error in CWM saying it cant flash the new rom or it will Flash but then never leave the LOGO screen. Ive let it sit for 45mins before.
I was able to always restore to a backup and just keep using SlimKat, but just tonight Im no longer able to restore to the backup. CWM sits at "Restoring data... c7ac6bd9.0..." but never actually finishes the restore.
So am I bricked? or what should I try? and also can someone just tell me what Rom/Kernal/Modem I need to flash in order to get it working. Id really like to use the Cyanide L, with Shift kernal but im not sure which modem I need. Tmobile modem or Att modem and which number.
Any help would be great thanks.
Additional info: I wiped cache, dalvik, and system/data everytime I tried to flash new rom, I made a backup and saved to my external before the flash. It is carrier unlocked and rooted. model number is the i747. CWM is v6.0.1.2
Your CWM is outdated.
Flash the latest Philz tar.md5 file in Odin: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
The latest KK ROMs will also need an updated bootloader and modem to function properly.

[Q] Multiple problems after flashing Stock

Hello everyone,
After a long fight to try and get this phone back to normal, everything seemed good,
except not really
I started on a buggy CM11 version. Sick of it, I downloaded a 4.4.4 stock rom. I had to disable firewall and defender, but I got Odin to flash my md5. I got through everything and it booted successfully. After signing in and all that jazz, I find out that my WiFi isn't working. After a few reboots, My 4G finally works and everything seems to be steady.
Then, after exploring the rest of the phone I find out that all my apps from last ROM are still there. I know that you are supposed to wipe before flashing, but I was told that Odin will take care of that. It obviously didn't.
After THAT, I try to boot into Recovery as the next sensible step is to try to wipe my data and cache. I turn the phone off and press (Vol up + Home + Pwr) and the first boot screen shows for a moment. It says in blue "RECOVERY BOOTING" in the corner. Right after, it disappears and in another second it does the same screen without the "RECOVERY BOOTING". And as presumed, it does a regular boot.
What did I miss? How can I wipe my phone from recovery? How can I fix my problem with Wifi?
Reflash in Odin.
Make sure you have the correct stock rom. If you flash the "md5" you may have flashed the wrong thing. The md5 is not tge firmware, that is just the code that verifies your firmware file is not corrupted.
If your old apps were still there, you flashed the wrong thing. There is no way to flash stock firmware in odin and not wipe the data partition.
You are correct then
Yeah, I flashed a tar.md5 in Odin. It gave me a new ROM but all my apps are there. After all that, I still can't go to recovery. I tried using the terminal and ROM Toolbox to go there, both didn't work. Can I just leave it as it is and find a way to recovery or is the only way to go to bootloader and flash a correct file to get to recovery?
Flash twrp and see if it will reboot into recovery, then factory reset and flash latest firmware with Odin right after. Odin will NOT wipe data. It has to be done manually

It depends on what you ate flashing.
If you are flashing a full stock factory image it will wipe user data. If you are just flashing a system partition it won't.

How do I know whatever I download is deodexed? And I went to a page of ROMs someone gave me and I downloaded the NK2 version, which also gave me a tar.md5. If I want the correct thing to flash, what should I flash?

The first post of any customized stock rom will tell you if its deodexed. If it doesn't say it...its not.
@Essem G:
Any updates for us? I'm following this thread because I have similar problems with my WiFi not working after upgrading from 4.2.2.
Any luck getting TWRP flashed?
Also I believe that the stock firmwares do come as tar.md5's, as in the file: M919UVUFNK2_M919TMBFNK2_M919UVUFNK2_HOME.tar.md5 from ShinySide's stock firmware thread.
As for the WiFi issue, from the hours of reading I've done it looks like this problem occurs when you upgrade your firmware, but it no longer matches the bootloader. Such as bootloader (Baseband) showing MDL, but Build Number showing NH7, NK2, etc. What does your show?
This thread may be of use to you when you get back to a working ROM. Good luck!
@RavenMind1
Everyone has been saying different answers and i've put off fixing my device for a while. I'm just afraid i'll brick it forever and have another nightmare after this current one. So no, there has been no progress. I think i'm gonna try to flash Philz and format my system, then flash a deodexed rom. @g7755725 said that you can flash TWRP, but I usually use Philz. It appears to be that I have lost root access because no root features work and SuperSU won't recognize it. Will everything work or am I setting my self up for disaster?
Edit: Where can I find a deodexed rom? I desperately need one, thanks

@g7755725 I downloaded a deodexed rom from the SkipJacks guy (different page than what you sent me) and it's a little under 9MB... how could this possibly be a ROM?

If you're trying to go back to complete stock then just Odin NK2 firmware. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile/general/firmwares-official-mdl-mk2-nb4-t2816508 I used the NK2 from here about 2 days ago to go back to stock.
