Has anyone setup snesx emulator yet? I can get it side loaded but I'm trying to connect it to xbmc with advanced launcher or the rom loader without luck so far.
Yes i have run snes emulator
just push roms with ADB.
i have a video on youtube of it running.
I got retroarch working. I used the arm7 v1.0.0.2-r34. The Amazon Fire game controller did not work with it but it worked great with the XboX 360 controller. Retorarch detect the amazon game remote and you can use the D pad but the buttons don't work. I got it directly from libretro.com
I put my roms on my google drive account and linked my google drive to es file explorer cloud and moved them to the fire tv that way.
Hmmm I'm trying to avoid copying the files to the firetv, not a lot of space so was hoping to do it within xbmc so it can access the files over the network.
probably a long shot but has anyone tried the dolphin emulator on this?

I tried dolphin emulator but it forcequit immediately. I can upload the logcat if you're interested.
also you can use ES file explorer to associate the emulators with the rom file types, and browse to a network share and run the roms from there. this worked with emulators with roms below a certain threshold size (N64 largest that worked) but the Wii rom and dolphin wouldn't work
Loading ROMs ?????

Can you explain more what you did here with the google drive? I have NESoid and SuperGNES and MAME4droid all loaded, and they launch... But I have not figured out how to copy the ROMS onto the Fire TV.

If you have ROMs on a network share drive on you LAN you should be able to use ES File Explorer to copy them. Or - how about dropbox?

With the limited space on the firetv you don't want to copy the roms to the device until they add the ability to use the USB port for extending the storage.

As MrMichaelJames says space is limited, but if you aren't copying more than a couple of GBs worth then you should be fine. That's what I've done for now. As to how to get ROMs to the Fire TV, you can use push via ADB, but that is tedious IMO. I just side loaded an FTP server and fire that up when I want to add or remove files. Then you can connect from your PC with an FTP client and just drag and drop files.

In ES File Explorer under like network you will see a cloud option. Choose that and tell it to add your google drive. I put the apps on my google drive account and then they show up in ES File Explorer so i can transfer them to the Fire TV.

This one here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rapfox.ftpsvr
Nothing fancy, but it works well. I tried a some others, but many wouldn't recognize the Ethernet connection and kept looking for a cell/wifi connection. And in case you do not know already, you can aquire the APK for any free app on Google Play using this website:
http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/
Just enter the package name, in this case "com.rapfox.ftpsvr", and then click generate download link.
Reicast works, but for some reason, it will not start any game, although they are listed.
Snes9x works great, unless image effects are selected.
ppsspp works. Most 3d games are not playable (Tekken 6, GT), but some are (Patapon 3, Ridge Racer 2).
SuperN64 works, but framerate is not rock stable.

I got Nostalgia.NES (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nostalgiaemulators.neslite) working great!
I'm using the Nyko Playpad Pro and initially, couldnt get buttons working as I wanted with the default input, I then configured the PS3 input, remapped some keys and BOOM!
Old skool SMB, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Galaga etc..
They claim that Wifi control may work (using your phone as a controller for multiplayer) but have yet to try it!
Emulator Parameters
I have RetroArch, and all my roms installed on my media server (Windows 7), but have not been able to get it to launch successfully on my FireTV.
So far I have been attempting to use ROM Collection Browser (RCB) to manage and launch my roms, but have reached a point where I am now stuck.
If I use the autoconfig setup in RBC it defaults my application path to /usr/bin/retroarch. As you might guess, RetroArch is not installed there.
It currently is at smb://XXX.XXX.X.X/EMU/RetroArch (where XXX is my IP address). I am able to set the path to the exe file, but the arguments
for the parameters are killing me.
In the documentation for RetroArch, it says the arguments should read:
-f -L /usr/lib/liberto/core_library "%rom" (where core_library is the approriate value for the system to be emulated)
So I tried :
-f -L /smb://XXX.XXX.X.X/EMU/ROMS "%ROM%" in order to point it towards my rom directory. Needless to say, this didn't work, and I really have no
idea what I am doing when it comes to arguments.
If someone could help square me away on setting the arguents to have RCB launch RetroArch from a remote location and have it load roms correctly,
you would be my hero. I have tried searching, but most of the help I find is directed at either running RetroArch directly from Windows, or through
Android, which I know the FTV is, but a very limited version of it.

Unfortunately dude, i've tried this many times and it doesnt work because the firetv cant launch files on LAN even though RCB is fully able to find the files. The furthest i've gotten was being able to import the roms and scrape the artwork but then after that you get a message saying that the fire tv cant launch the rom because it can't see the path
the only way it could is if somehow firetv got modded to mount network drives. otherwise your either going to have to go 1 of 2 routes
1) if your firetv is rooted, put the roms on a flashdrive and mount it onto the firetv - but doing that means u have to plug out the controller
2) ADB Push the ROMs or use cloud storage to download the ROMs to local storage
3) Use an addon to download the rom+scrape directly to the device, either advanced launcher or freeroms downloader
with that being said, if someone somehow figured out a way to mount network drives - this would be some nice information to share
EDIT: I suppose this could work as well https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lysesoft.andsmb&hl=en
I've found that all the .emu emulators work the best for the systems they're made for.
Snes9x ex is the same dev
The dev for fpse is sending me a test version to get triggers on the 360 working

I suppose if I went this route, I could install RetroArch directly to the FTV and hopefully avoid all these configuration issues. Do you know if sideloading RA for Android would work in this case, as it seems to be the easiest and best soultion. Plus I would gain an addition 64GB of storage from my thumb drive on the back, which would be awesome. Then I could keep all those games the I keep downloading, and move the XBMC thumbs to a remote location, freeing up additional space.

it would work for sure..
only reason why i havent done this is because it would sacrifice the use of a bluetooth keyboard/mouse (unless there was one that could natively pair with the firetv without needing a dongle)
I found out, of the amazing power of XBMC and I found out it's been ported to multiple platforms such as Android, OUYA and recently the Fire TV. I want a box that I can use XBMC on my TV to use apps for streaming like (identities of apps have been changed) SmashDown, FireFilms,MovieY2K, SportsDemon (LIVE Streaming) and that one that has XBMC in the name that you can use for torrents and more.
My question is...if I want to use this box for internet streaming and such..which would be the best?
what's your thoughts about XBMC on OUYA? I only want an OUYA for XBMC and sideloading apk's. Also, OUYA doesn't mind rooting....right..? Which begs the question of the Fire TV. IF I bought a Fire TV would it come with the unrootable update? (I don't want a Fire TV if I can't root it)
Which one would be more powerful in streaming? or are they equally matched? any lag or incompatibilities?
any feedback would be appreciated
bump? I'm going to do this just once....the Fire TV community has been active in giving me advice but nothing from OUYA?... = /

Ouyaforum.com is much more active than here. Personally I use sideloaded spmc and have no problems streaming from the internet, network drives, or either computer. Works great for me. There's a one click app for rooting. Usually it has to be clicked twice but works great as well as being able to add the play store very easily. Also amazon appstore.
With the last update OUYA added the ability to connect to your OUYA with a computer wirelessly and install apks with drag and drop. Personally I use es file explorer with a browsable Google drive to transfer files from any device to my OUYA.

From what info that's online its standard android OS and that runs XBMC no problem. I was running XBMC on an android stick (imoto) and it ran well.
I'm using an ouya happily enough. Runs XBMC admirably plays 10 bit mkv, which is something of a gold standard to me. If you get the fire, please report if it will as well.
Plus I see to Fire is amazon prime. If your a prime user that may sway you, I'd expect it to show up on stock android shortly anyway.
Spec wise either will work well Fire looks slightly better. If i were upgrading, I'd want esata, more usb and ideally gigabit lan, Which neither devise supplies.
I really feel both devices are more limited by i/o then anything else.
Cubox looks good but I've no personal experience.
Got the fire Tv, and rooted it and Kodi'd it a while ago... Good decision I made

I apologize if this subject has been beat to death, but I need to have some questions answered before I purchase the firetv. I currently have an old zotac mag ion htpc that I have been running xbmc on for at least 3 years. Works great for all my movies/music (I have a synology server). I am contemplating 'upgrading' to a fire tv because I'm getting sick of not being able to easily use watchespn, primetv, etc apps 'through xbmc'. And the ion htpc does not like streaming through windows/browser...
The fire tv will give me a nice option to watch youtube, watchespn, primetv, etc and still have xbmc as an 'app' so I can do what I normally use it for - my local content.
I have read through some of the guides and everything seems pretty easy. However:
1. Will I need to root or use sbmc instead of kodi? I understand the newer versions of fire tv are un-rootable from the factory. I would actually prefer not to root and have to use 'cracked' firmware updates.
2. I understand you cannot load from a usb stick with the newer firmware. Is this an issue with repositories, etc that you might download on your laptop from a browser? Or can you download from a browser, extract all in the firetv? That was one advantage of using my current htpc since it is running windows 7 - also a hassle because I never learned the easy way of getting the bluecop repo and others to work without a lot of fiddling.
3. Follow on with question 2 - Occasionally, I need to download subtitles for my local movies. IIRC I would just download the .srt file and place it in the movie directory (in my synology)...and then I could just pick it up with xbmc. I assume all this works just fine because xbmc is xbmc whether it is running on an android platform (fire tv) or windows/htpc as a program.
4. Will there be any issues connecting to my synology? Both the fire tv and the synology are hard wired with ethernet to my router.
5. Google music. Is this app available and easily accessible without rooting? I very occasionally run it on my current htpc - again since it is a hassle because I'd run it through the browser/windows.
Thanks
1. No, you don't need root to install any version of XBMC/Kodi, and that includes SPMC.
2. To install add-ons/repositories that can't be added from XBMC/Kodi itself all you need to do is download it to a PC/NAS (to a shared folder) then use Install from zip in XBMC/Kodi.
3. Don't know as I don't require subtitles, but any that works on you current setup should work on XBMC/Kodi on the AFTV. With the exception of being able to use an attached USB drive or doing something like HD audio pass-through XBMC/Kodi will be no different than it is on any other system.
4. Shouldn't, you can always have issues when it comes to networked devices, but generally speaking No.
5. No, you can not install Google services without rooting. There may be some work around for that, but I couldn't say. Just switch over to Amazon music service.
Great thanks for the replies! Looks like the only hangup is the Google integration... Which is not something I truly use often now.

My answers based on using a Fire TV Stick....
1. No root needed to install SPMC or XMBC apk's. Just enable the settings for 3rd party apps and side load them. I've loaded both SPMC and XBMC Gotham
2. No Idea. I haven't tired any add-ons. And the FTVS has a micro usb port used for power, so I haven't tired connecting a drive to it.
3. SRT files work fine for me. I've got a Windows Server box with file shares, I've added that to XMBC and SPMC, the MKV of the movie and the SRT are in the same folder. The subtitles show fine.
4. If your Synology is setup to connect to standard windows file shares or SMB file shares, you're fine.
5. I have not tried. I don't use it much, even on my android phones. I use Rhapsody which isn't available on my FTVS, and I haven't tried sideloading it yet.

3. Subtitles work fine, and i own a synbology 1812+ that works great. Make sure you allow full access to the NFS shares since xbmc requires read/write to the shares. If you purchase the fire PM if you need help with the shares.
4. If this is a Must i would get the Nexus Player. Fire gives you Amazon Services, Nexus Player gets you Google services.... which honestly i use google services a ton more.

Thanks. I looked into the nexus player, looks too simple for my uses. No ether net port, weak app support.
With the fire TV maturing over the past few months it definitely seems the way to go. In fact I ordered one yesterday after briefly considering the roku 3. I think the ease of use of the apps, watch espn and others combined with xbmc should fit my needs nicely. I will definitely pm if I run into any sharing issues.

The current stable release can be found in the Kodi Downloads, of which Gotham 13.2 is the current version with Helix on the horizon. You might want to consider using SPMC 13.3.3 as the Kodi developer @Koying maintains this Android specific version which contains fixes not to be found on Gotham 13.2. And it works great on the Fire TV.
Just received my fire tv and will be setting it up when I get a chance.
Just looking at the guide: http://kodi.wiki/view/Amazon_Fire_TV
When they talk about 'host' they just mean the computer or whatever you are using to transfer the 'packages' to the fire tv correct? My host doesn't have to be on 100% of the time, just when installing the android sdk, etc?
Hi all,
I am glad I found this great forum and I hope I am posting on the correct subforum.
I am considering getting a Fire TV. It is currently at a great price on Amazon.de (84 euro), but since I want to replace my WD Live that i currently use, I want to have xbmc on it. On ebay there are many pre-rooted Fire TV with xbmc and add ons. but at an average of about 150 euro, I think it is stupid to buy them now if I can do it myself and if I can avoid rooting even better.
My main needs for the Fire TV (in priority irder) are :
1. SInce I am a Prime User of Amazon, I want to use Instant Video of Amazon
2. Stream HD video from my libraries from NAS drives
3. Other streaming add ons on xbmv like xStream, Navi-X, Sportsdevil
4. Web browsing, emulators, amazon apps
So my questions are ;
1. If I buy right now a new Fire TV, can I install xbmc using one of the guides without rooting it ? Are there sepcific models/versions of Fire TV that won't allow it ?
2. Can I use the streaming and other add ons of xbmc without rooting , or are there specific ones that require root ?
3. Do any of the streaming add ons using Bittorent ? In Germany while you currently have no issues with streaming or download , using torrents will get you quick and easy problems with the law. Feedback of german members is highly appreciated here.
Sorry for a very long first post, I hope the questions are clear and easy to answer. Please feel free to add anything you think it might be helpful in my case.
Many thanks and cheers !

1/ No, you can install without need for root.
2/ No, addons install in XBMC does not require root.
3/ No, streaming protocol is different from bit torrent. You can choose to install an addon that acts as a bit torren client to download files and watch it, but it is your choice. No addons in XBMC will trick you into using bit torrent without your acknowledgment. If you are worry about piracy, you are better off paying for Hulu and such since using primewire or 1channel is the same as illegal torrenting.

Ordered it today, still at the same good price, but I have to wait a week for delivery as the demand was probably high (until 2 days ago it was next day delivery). They also had the Logitech K400 keyboard at a reduced price today so I added this as well, from what I read through the forum it is well supported. I have to search a bit more about game controller though.
I downloaded ADB, xbmc Gotham 13.2, copied all video files from various HDD to the NAS drives, and now we wait....
You are going to love it. I was using a WD Live TV unit previously as well. It did not have support for Amazon Prime and it was very slow when loading directories with a lot of files. The Fire TV with XBMC/Kodi loaded is a great replacement!

I am quite excited to be honest, amazon also send me an email that it will arrive today instead of Monday as originally planned (so now I have to find somewhere to send my wife and the kids until I set everything up , a day pass at theme park probably )
The lack of Amazon Video and the speed was the main reason for me too. Especially after the root on WD to use Movie Sheets for the movies it became slower that death ...
As I am not familiar with xbmc, if I have a movie file , named after the movie (as it appears on imdb), is there an add on that creates a movie sheet (info, thumbnail, etc) or do I have to create them manually ? Any link will also help.
Cheers
Really enjoying it so far !
Everything runs smooth and I found the answer for anything xbmc related in the xbmc forums.
Sideloading apps was extremely easy following one of the guides found, the only issue (if you can call it "issue") was the command :
adb install blahblah.apk
it failed because of multiple devices. I run adb devices and it was an emulator-5554. Did some research you can either kill it or use this command :
adb -s <Fire TV IP: Port> install blahblah.apk instead and it works like a charm.
Hope it helps if someone faces this issue.
Cheers !

Curious how you use this as a replacement local streamer over WD TV Live.
I have WD, it's UI is terrible, BUT. I need full non transcoded blu-ray video(H.264,VC-1), 7.1 DTS-MA and True-HD sound. Am I missing something or is none of this really possible with Fire?
Not trying to be a jerk, but want to make sure I am not missing something about the Fire. If so PLEASE fill me in.

As local streamer, I use xbmc and NAS drives and it works perfectly. I don't have the same needs in sound, so I am more than ok with the formats supported. H.264, VC-1 is supported afaik.
Cheers

Interesting specs say vc1 but ...
according to this http://kodi.wiki/view/Amazon_Fire_TV it dont work nor does dtsma passthrough. Too bad.
The first time that I read about FireTV I was excited, so much power in a tiny box and I was hoping to replace my aging WDTV live for good. I'm one of those guys whom prefers local media and some quality so I'm not into the streaming bandwagon also broadband speed still a little expensive and slow in my country.
So with that in mind, I would like to ask you guys, do you believe that someday soon would be able to homebrew the fireTV for a modified OS which allow real local content (without the need for Plex).
I would like to know the possibilities for this in a near future, near future being before this year end for example.
Regards

You can do that with Kodi no need for Plex unless you really like plex for example : SMB,DLNA (I use my nas server via SMB) plenty of ways
Oh no, no DLNA please. Tried several times with different options and there's always an issue with subtitles. I really like the WDTV but feels like slow to many times.

I don't think we understand what you meant by "a modified OS which allow real local content (without the need for Plex)." Do you wish to connect a USB hard drive and store your files there? You can do that if your Fire TV is rooted. I believe what others were saying is that you don't need plex at all since Kodi (XBMC) can stream files locally or over a network without the need for transcoding. Usually people need plex because the device doesn't support the right codecs or doesn't have the processing speed. (Roku for example.) The Kodi app can handle pretty much any video format you throw at it, so no need for plex. Just point it to a SMB, NFS, or DLNA server and it just works.
Sorry, my bad English as Always. Image that I could be able to load on a FireTV a custom version of Android or something else, which transforms the firetv in a local media server ala WDTV and also support to apps like Netflix
If I understand you correctly, you're going to want to run a variant of XBMC - either kodi or SPMC.
Side load SPMC and see if it works for you.
Do you have the ability to root? You cannot add external USB HDD directly to the fire TV without root. However, you can add a USB HDD to your computer and share it to your fire TV for playback.

I'm thinking you want the fire TV to store local media files via USB HDD and you want it to act as a server as well for your other devices.
The answer is yes, BUT you MUST BE ROOTED. AND rootable fire TVs are getting harder to come by so if you're in the US I'd start looking now at bestbuy and staples.
If you're not in the US you can't get a rootable one in stores. EBay might be your only chance and you will pay a lot more. If craigslist is an option, I've found items to run cheaper there but of course there is less options and more traveling on your part.
Running fire tv as a server is useless it has 8gb of storage.. without root it's even worse.. nas server is best and easiest and most comfortable option. I also have Samsung home sync before I got fire tv it has 1tb drive I also have root on it but it's almost useless no netflix, hulu nothing.
