So I am baltimore based and before i updated my EVO 4g to CyanogenMod 7 RC4 the Wimax GeoLocation information would show i was in baltimore. But now since i updated to CyanogenMod7 RC4 the Wimax connection runs up to NYC first then connects out. So now the geolocation services on website when i'm using the hotspot mode thing i'm in New York City. Do a google search for coffee and IP geolocation gives me cafes in Midtown Manhattan.
I have a feeling this is something to deal with what server its connecting to but i have no idea how to fix this. Any ideas? I really want my Geolocation to go back to being based in the city i am located.
Everything else works fine and well, 3g, Wifi, GPS, Wimax speeds are decent 2.1 MegaByte ps and 0.25 MegaByte up, ping time though is now 180ms or upwards of 400ms if i'm moving. Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?
This guide is solely at your own risk. In particular, in the DATA settings under ##3282#, if you go messing around and changing things willy-nilly there is a potential to majorly screw up your phone. However, even if you follow this guide perfectly, I am providing no guarantee this will not screw up your phone or your service, this is merely a documentation of how I did it for the community's benefit.
What are proxies?
A proxy is a server that acts as an intermediary for network traffic. This can be done for a variety of reasons, including to save on bandwidth. For example, Sprint's proxy rewrites all outbound requests from our phones to request the smaller, mobile version of pages, even if the browser user-agent is set to desktop, and does who knows what else.
Why would I want to disable Sprint's proxies?
Faster speeds: Removing the proxy removes a link in between you and the server you're trying to connect to. There may be more to it than that, but it has been widely reported (though without reliable statistics) that disabling the proxy speeds up your connection. In my case, I found that my 3G speeds went from 450/300 kbps right before disabling proxies to 800/300 kbps right after. 4G speeds did not seem affected.
Fix certain apps: Many apps, particularly streaming apps such as Rdio and Rhapsody don't play well with Sprint's proxies.
Access local websites: If you're trying to access a website hosted on your local network, for example, an intranet, Sprint's proxies will break this.
User agent: You can take back control of your browser user agent and view desktop versions of webpages if you want to.
Is it safe?
People have been doing this for years now, including on the Epic 4G and the Evo original, with no ill effects. Even with proxies disabled, historically you have been able to continue to receive all official Sprint updates.
Great, so how do I disable Sprint's proxies?
Install a terminal application, such as ConnectBot
Use it to open a local terminal window
On the command prompt, type (case-sensitive): getprop ril.MSL
The 6-digit number that is spit out is your phone's MSL, make a note of it
Open up your phone dialer, and type on the keypad ##3282#, which will open up the DATA settings
Choose: Edit
Enter your MSL
Choose: Others
Choose: Multimedia
Observe RTSP Proxy Address and HTTPPD Proxy Address, and confirm they are respectively the Sprint proxies rtsp.vog.sprintpcs.com and pd.vog.sprintpcs.com (If they are not that is interesting, and post it here, and also make a note of it in case you want to go back for some reason)
Replace RTSP Proxy Address and HTTPPD Proxy Address with: 0.0.0.0
Observe RTSP Proxy Port and HTTP PD Proxy Port, and confirm they are respectively 554 and 8085 (Same thing as above if they are not)
Replace RTSP Proxy Port and HTTP PD Proxy Port with 0
Back out of the DATA settings, reboot, and your proxies should now be disabled, try it out and post back any feedback on how it works for your now
Gave it a shot, no joy. Not sure what it was, but sending and receiving data was showing though no progress being made. As soon as I put the settings back, all pages were up and speedtest worked.
It may just be me because we still have a tower down in the area (from tornadoes back in April). Thanks for the writeup.
Speedtest.net app hasn't worked for me at all since I got the phone. But it works on other devices in my house (and theyeasily pull 2,000 kbps+ on 3G). I tried before removing proxies and it just says "Network Communicatoin issues" and it still says it after. I did do this on my Epic and it worked great, so I imagine it'd work great for us here, too! Thanks for posting this, regardless if this fixed my speedtest issue or not.
Does anyone else have a weird issue with Terminal Emulator where when you type in getprop ril.MSL it keeps capitalizing it to getprop rIl.MSL? I can't seem to get around this... so I just used ADB.
Maybe it's the Swype keyboard?

It's exactly that. I'd install the swype beta.

Try using a different keyboard instead of swype, it IS a swype issue. I would suggest gingerbread keyboard from the market.
Also speedtest 2.0.5 doesn't work well if it works at all. Try 2.0.3 (click here)

You have to uninstall normal swype before installing the beta correct?
In Terminal Emulator:
Menu-> More-> Preferences-> Input method-> Change from "Word-based" to "Character-based".
Problem should be fixed with no need to change Swype.
Edit: Also, click the swype preferences in the lower left of the soft-keyboard and uncheck auto-capitalization.
It's only your problem..... Don't use swype use samsung keyboard and it will work.... Swype is the problem

Ran some speedtest benchmarks before and after.
No appreciable changes in speed for 4g up or down. IN FACT my best 4g run was prior to making any changes and was:
13893kbps down and 1517 kbps up and those 3 consecutive runs were all about the same so I just had an unusually good connection. Otherwise pre change and post change speeds are consistent for 4g
in 3G mode however my speeds prior to proxy change was about 800kbps down and 300kbps up. After proxy changes my 3G speeds are about 1200kbps down (with a high of 1500kbs) and 300kbps up. So no change in upload speeds and a fair change in 3g download speeds.
Working now. Needed a reboot to take hold. 3G seems slightly faster, 4G seems unaffected. No telling for sure, because I get horrid reception in my office.
Seems to work well. I have been getting better speeds since I did this. Thanks
I did this change in the middle of the night almost a week ago. Before I was getting average download speeds of about 500 kbps. After it shot up to 1.2mbps. It also improved the speed of my OGEvo. But, I realized that it only helped during offpeak hours. Once the world wakes up and start to jumble up my bandwidth, my average speeds lower to about 200kbps.
Will this affect ability to receive OTA updates from Sprint? Specifically, PRL, Profile, or firmware updates?
im going to do a few speed tests of before and after, ill post my results
I did this tweak and I saw a huge improvement on 3G speeds! I opened up my Miren browser and went to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest (HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SITE) and I got 1.3mbps/300kbps speeds. HUGE improvement over my previous on average speeds of 300-500kbps/100kbps.
Thanks for this, OP!
mmmm ok i just got my results and it didnt help me any.
my speeds went way down actually...
here are the results
i went from an average of 1000 kbps dl before to 650 kbps dl after the proxy edit
and
an average of 300 kbps ul before to 50 kbps ul after the edit.
dowant work for me...
I went from 600k to 1400k dl 700k ul after edit!! Amazing thanks

Oh yeah... going to give it a shot then! 3G speeds have been the suck here for a couple months now.
I've got the speedtest.net broadband app on my SGS2. When I had my 10mb virgin media connection on my PC, I was getting 9.5mb wi-fi download speed on the phone's speedtest app when the phone is right next to my PC. VM have now switched me over to 60mb on my PC and the phone is now giving me 15.9mb wi-fi with speedtest. Is that the maximum the phone can do via wi-fi or should it be capable of closer to 60mb? Or am I meant to switch off wi-fi and go to wi-fi direct?
I've had close to 40 on mine are you using their superhub by anychance?

Hi matey, yes I am, it was just installed this morning. Took a while for my 10mb speed to actually switchover to 60mb.
Are you using normal wi-fi or wi-fi direct?
Lots of problems with those superhubs squire.. it's recommended if possible to set it up in modem mode and use your own router. Im just on normal wifi at the moment nothing special hub is on modem mode got my router set up pretty standard after much research on the virgin forums mind! It's worth having a look there for configurations but beware there is hundreds of posters complaining Also i did notice that various s2 modems determine the speed of your broadband through your wifi and i use the kh3 as i find it the quickest of all the ones i've tested.

Hmm, interesting. How do I switch it to modem mode? I can setup my router again like I did with my previous VM cable modem and use the wi-fi from my own router if the superhub wi-fi is not up to the job. Having said that, I just did some wi-fi speed tests between my PC and laptop. Downloads speeds vary between 49 and 60mb, and one site reported my upload speed, but all the others couldn't read the upload speed.
What is the kh3 exactly?
Wow. In my country, 10Mbps is only by fibre... Average 3g connection is only 2Mbps

Apologies for late reply squire. If your speedtests are reporting good speeds at your laptop then your hub sounds like its working ok so good news there However if you wanted to boot into modem mode you can access the hub by typing http://192.168.0.1 into your ie search bar and logging in with the standard username - admin and pass wich is set at -changeme these can be changed from within.. once switched to modem mode the address changes to http://192.168.0.100.
The KH3 is a modem for the S2 which seems to work very well for me you can read a bit more about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656005 page 3 has a direct download. It is worth trying a few different ones though as whats great for one maybe not so for another! Hope this helps.
Thanks Juan, great info. Yes, download speeds to laptop are great, but all but one of the speed test sites are not able to report my upload speed. They report them fine on my desktop though, and that's connected via ethernet cable. I suppose it might be the superhub or possibly my laptop causing the error. But anyway, since this a phone forum, I'm probably going too much off topic.
I've yet to see anything on my N2 register more than 10mbps down or 4mbps up when using wifi as the data path. It doesn't matter if the speed test is using an internet-based speed testing server, or if I transfer a file to one of my wired LAN PC's.
Oddly enough, I sometimes get faster speeds with HSPA (25+ mbps). It doesn't matter what router I connect to (I have several AP's on my network) - whether at home, neighbors, work, or family. Both my N2 and my wife's show the same type of speed limit.
Not only is it slow, but it's very erratic. I've tried all the standard suggestions (turning of power save mode, always on during sleep, etc), but none of these matter. Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz have the same speed caps.
With all that being said, I'm curious:
What are your maximum DOWNLOAD speeds you've experienced using a WIFI connection?
I consistently get 20mbps+. On 5Ghz, Brighthouse networks, Orlando area, with Roadrunner lightning service.
I get the same as on my home wired computer... 30MB

Sure does make me wonder what's so special about my two N2's. Im running a stock deoxed, rooted rom. In fact, it's this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091214
I wish I could say with confidence that the original unrooted rom was just as slow, but I didn't have it on my phone long enough to even test it...
What rom are you guys running?
I have gotten as high as 27-30 mbps down and 10.5 up. The down was on my home wifi. The up was in the wifi at work.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
I'm on stock everything. Only thing I've done is rooted and added the xposed framework to add apps to the multi Window.
I have comcast 50Mb down and 10Mb up I can ever exceed 20Mb down but somehow my upload goes over my 10Mb up
S20 Unlocked from Samsung.com
Carrier: AT&T
Issue:
When on home WiFi network, the S20 does not load images in apps such as Facebook, Instagram, etc. Slows to a complete crawl.
If I test on fast.com, I receive normal home speeds on mobile of 200-400mbps
If I turn off WiFi, performance immediately returns to as expected.
Any ideas?
Router is Netgear XR500
Quality of Service is off.
Did you try a reset of network settings under settings?

Just tried that.
Fast.com reported download speed of 500mbps
I was able to download an app at an appropriate speed
It seems to be only Facebook and Instagram that are still showing the issue -- extremely slow load times.
Both work as expected on LTE.
Found this old thread.

Android System Web Viewer did take forever to update while we set the phone up. I'll see if I can roll that back.
I don't have any issues with any of my other android devices on my router - but I'll also check IPV6 settings.

No luck trying this.
Tried turning IPV6 on - in router settings. No difference. Turned it back off.
System web Viewer had an update. Updated. No difference. Disabled it. No difference.
Those two apps still wildly underperforming on wifi.
Try it on a different wifi connection outside of home? Same results?

I tried it on another phone's hot spot and could not replicate the issue.
I guess that means it's a problem with the router settings. Not sure how.

Hope you sort it out sir, I normally don't get unlocked on ATT due to losing WiFi calling but I get a better signal now and you can just call to get visual voicemail fixed if yours doesn't work right away so I'm loving it....
I'm sure you'll love it too once you get it sorted...

Was a fix found?
My 20+ is having problems with wifi slowing to a crawl after just a few minutes.
Just bought a new router TP-Link AX11000 and it started so I thought it was the router but everything else on wifi in the house gets expected speeds my two 20+'s not so. I think it has to do with WIFI 6. If I stay within 10ft of the router everything is fine after that... I go in my bedroom 30ft away and have -63dbm signal strength and I can run a speed test and get 500mbps down try again and it will start at 500 and slow to around 45 try a 3rd time and and I barely get 4mbps 4th time and it's 0 with signal strength still at -63 on all of the test in the bedroom my upload will be 45mbps.
after a lot of testing with battery settings and things on the phone found out that my slow wifi was due to 2 settings on the router.
first in your router disable WMM, this made my s20+ use like 30mbps max in my case. now list my wifi 5ghz as +800mbps
seconds, disable ipv6 on the router. this made my phone ultra slow to everything. like play store hang on app updates, google drive take forever to load every single photo, like is taking forever to get the first reply from the server.
with that changed now the phone works at full speed on wifi. play store updates are shocking fast.
so lame that a flagship that cost nearly 1 thousand dollars have to disable things externally to work properly. no other phone or device works bad with the previous config of WMM or IPv6. I have a Linksys WRT1900ACS.
Hope they fix it with a software upgrade.
