[Q] process com.android.browser

out of no where one day, i went to use my browser and i got process com.android.browser. any time i try to use browser now i get that and i have tried everything. i really DONT want to do a factory reset, or root. is there anyway someone can send me the stock browser.apk? do you think that will work?

Out of nowhere Something had to have happened to cause that, or your phone has a serious issue - browser is a system app(?) and since we don't have rw access on the slide there's no way it could have deleted it especially while it's booted and definitely wouldn't if you're not rooted also.
Do a full reboot, power it off and power it back on, it should be ok. If that doesn't work, think back to the past few days prior to this, what have you done or installed?

its been like this for a month its been restarted many a time =/ the last thing i was doing on it was watching youtube videos on the browser but using the streaming video player rather than the utube app i was listening to white noise music to fall asleep. then when i woke up thats when it stopped working

Well I'm not sure if it's possible (or allowed) but I'll try to pull the browser.apk off my phone and post it on here for you. Hopefully it's not odex(ed), if it is that creates an issue for a non rooted phone.
MODS: If I'm not allowed to post it then just delete it once it's up or let me know before I do.

OK, here's the browser file. Just load it to your sdcard and use a file explorer to install it or an apk installer. I would reboot after you do it, hopefully it will work but it's a shot in the dark since I doubt it will install in the normal ./system/app/ directory. If it even installs, it will probably go to the ./system/data/ directory (just in case you ever need to find it or remove it).
BTW, this is the browser from froyo/Team Fenix 2.0, might not work if there's any difference in the browser. If not, go to this thread download the file, unzip it, and look for 'system' > 'app' and then find the browser.apk. Put it on your sdcard and install it.

ok first way didnt work. second way i unzip the file and its .img files what do i use to open those?

Wow, I just realized that I posted the link for a stock nandroid backup - not at all what you need. I'll post the link to slidemeroot, it's a stock rom (not nandroid backup) and I'll upload the broswer from that in this post.
The browser on the stock rom is odex'ed, there may not be a way to install it without rooting but give it a shot. If all else fails and you don't want to root you'll just have to install a different browser from the market like dolphin or opera.
OK, uploaded the borwser.odex file (unzip it after you download it). Here are the commands to [hopefully] get it to work that you need to run through command prompt. You should just be able to copy and paste the adb commands one at a time. You'll have to get adb to catch your phone in recovery mode in order to do this since you'll be writing to the system so be prepared for a headache since your doing this without rooting and flashing an eng build, but if it works you'll be happy you did it

You'll need to make sure the files are in your android sdk tools directory and you 'cd' to it. If you have no idea what I'm talking about check the slide rom bible thread and look at one of the links about rooting - you'll understand

That won't work. You can't have the same app installed in both /system and /data.

So he would have to get in to recovery and delete the original browser apk from /system/app then re-install it and the odex file? The browser should be in the sysyem/app directory from the factory right? The /data/ dir. is for custom installed apps.
The easier way would be to uninstall the browser apk and odex file from /system/ and just install the first browser apk I posted which will install to the /data/ dir.
Can that even be done through adb without root? Or is the a way to 'sudo' with android like you do with ubuntu?

If you were like me, you rushed right into installing CyanogenMod. Whoops, found out there is no swype installed. What to do?
Hopefully you made a nandroid backup like me. I didn't want to do a full nandroid restore just to extract the files. So I did this...

UPDATED 11/22/2010 - Okay, some people have requested a "newbie friendly" solution. I have created an APK which will help automate this procedure, without the need for ADB. If you have already applied CyanogenMod, then use this APK to select an older Clockwork Backup that has your licensed Swype. It will then extract and install the files for you. I have only tested on the G2.

I'll possibly do some updates to:
a) cache swype for future installs (to make restores super quick)
b) add other extractions of 'your' saved files (i.e. google apps)
c) add more options for handling cache/files/etc.

Did you push libSwypeCore.so to /system/lib yet?

For some reason it still doesn't show up in the keyboard list, any idea why?

Ok, what you're supposed to do is, you actually have to install the swype.apk. its not enough to copy it to the /system/app directory adb install Swype.apk or use root file explorer click on the apk file and choose install.

or you can open up cyanogenmod(unzip) and download a stock g2 rom and then just put the files in the proper places, then zip cm again and flash(i did this all from my phone ast night because i was too lazy to go to the computer)

have you tried to go to swype.com and signing up for there beta testing. Not sure if still open but does not hurt to try. I reinstall from the beta testing website and is working great on CM6.1 on my G2

Hmmm... I saw the swype in the settings after doing adb pushes and a reboot.
In reality, I had unchecked both Android keyboard, and Swype keyboard. Then went to a text field, and got a request for Android input. I then went back into settings and checked Swype, and then it just worked. I didn't need to install the APK. For those not seeing swype as an option, did you confirm that system was remounted and that files were copied? Did you reboot?
As for unyaffs, I was lazy. I just downloaded a binary for OSX from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7931772 . I haven't tried a Windows version of unyaffs.

wilnotdie - You should be able to do this directly on your phone, as well. Of course, you would need to mount your system read/write and cp files versus adb push.
i.e.
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
cp /sdcard/nandtmp/system/lib/libSwypeCore.so /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
cp /sdcard/nandtmp/system/app/Swype.apk /system/app/Swype.apk

Oh mybad, not that way. Was thinking of using the phone as my linux box instead of a pc. In theory it should work, just need to compile for use on the phone?
But Im guessing its not gonna be this ez lol

I didn't do any ADB pushes I just used root explorer to move the libswype file to lib directory then used the installer on the root explorer to install and it loaded right up for me. Only problem I'm getting is the double tap to edit isn't working now for some reason.

Okay here is what I did and it worked. Using SU File manager (found in the market if you search "root explorer") and on the stock ROM, copy the lib and apk files from /system/app and /system/lib. I copied them to the root of my sd card. Wipe everything and install CM and the addon. Grab SU File manager again and find the lib file on your SD card. copy it. There are two little buttons on the top of SU File manager with an S and a D. I pressed both of them to mount system and data as read/write. Go to system/lib and paste the lib file. Verify that it is there and since there are so many files sort by size its like 998kb. Then just use SU File Manager or astro or whatever to find Swype.apk on your sd card. Install it from there. With Astro click it and "open app manger." Then go to keyboard settings and enable it as an input method. Go to swype settings and it should not FC if you did this stuff correctly. Set your settings and enjoy! Oh yea dont forget to uninstall and refund SU File manager

You can use root explorer. Download one of the stock roms. Access it through root explorer and copy the 2 files from the stock rom folders to its respective folder on your device. Then install the apk from within root explorer. Set everything up in your keyboard settings and your golden. Can be done in minutes.

Livewallpaper on Bonsai

Hi All,
I was wondering if I could put out a request for some APKs. I would like to have live wallpapers on Bonsai and have tried putting livewallpaper.apk and the picker into my Epic but I don't have Root Explorer and I can't seem to change the permissions on those files. Right now all of the APKs I found have Read Yes Write Yes and the other one No. All of the APKs in my app directory have Read Yes Write No and other one No. Could someone post those APKs with permissions set like that? I don't know if that is my exact problem or if it is worth it to buy RE for only that purpose.

I believe its been mentioned before that ES File Explorer brings most of the Root Explorer functionality for free. I could be wrong though since ive never tried it myself. Worth a shot though if its just a permissions issue.

U can also use sdx stock app removal app, just put the apk in the adx folder on the SD card and go Into the app then to manage backups and got restore

Set From My 3.0.1 Bonsai Epic 4g

OK. I think I may be confusing some people.

I did that using ES File Manager and rebooted. It didn't work. I did some more research and a few people had the same issue. The solution was to make sure the permissions in the livewallpaper apks was exactly the same as the permissions as the other apks in the apps directory. The apks in the directory all have Read Yes, Write No and Hidden No. All of the livewallpaper apks I found had permissions set up as Read Yes, Write Yes and Hidden No. I figure if I change the Write from Yes to No, it might work. I'm not 100% positive which is why I don't know if it's worth it to buy Root Explorer just to experiment. I'm hoping someone can provide me with the livewallpaper and livewallpaperspicker apks with altered permissions that have those settings.

This is very easy to solve. Go to midnight rom and download it to computer. Open up the midnight extras folder and you will find lots of zip files in there that are all flashable in CWM. Just extract the folder, then copy the live wallpaper zips you want onto your sd card, then flash in CWM.
Alternatively, what I normally do is download the rom you want to flash (Bonsai). Open it up on your pc. Navigate to system/apps. Paste the livewallper apks into that directory. Then flash normally. This will include any files you want in the system/app folder.

7zip (windows) is what u want to use 2 open the zip but DO NOT EXTRACT it!!! Well in 7zip paste the apks u want into system/apps. Then close 7zip. Move the rom 2 ur sdcard and flash as u would normaly. U can also replace the boot/shutdown animation and a few other parts of the rom that you can add or subtract stuff from. I hope this help as not to sound offensive but u seem a bit newbish and 7zip isa great tool for viewing zip files w/o extracting them took me a good deal of time 2 find this handy tool, hope this helps ya out...

But the adb method works just as well... Maybe even faster.

[Q] Note 2 Gallery/Lockscreen wallpaper help

Had the bright idea to delete the stock gallery app while clearing bloatware. Unbeknownst to me, that was needed to set the lock screen wallpaper to anything other than the stock wallpapers. I use quickpic instead. Now I can't set a picture as the lock screen background (I can change wallpaper).
I've tried reinstalling the gallery, but when choosing to set the paper from the home screen, the gallery option does not show up. Is there a way to again associate the gallery, or an alternative app to do so?

I'm no expert, but have you restored gallery back to /system/app or did you just click on .apk and chose to install it? Because if you installed it, it went to /data/app - maybe that's the reason it does not function as it supposed to?
And second, try to run it as an app - see if it starts in first place, maybe there's something else missing. Perhaps you deleted odex file as well, and because of this it does not start?
Just did a little experiment - restored apk and odex files back to /system/app - and option to change wallpaper appeared again. No reboot needed.

Move gallery apk to system/app and set the permissions to rw-r-r aand reboot.

I believe you both are right, as I just installed like normal. Noob issue though, when I go to copy and paste the apk into system/app, I get a permission denied message. I'm rooted of course and granted es file explorer su privileges, so I'm not sure why. Any suggestions?

You need to remount /system as read-write, just like you did before removing apps (if you removed them manually). Go to your terminal emulator or use ./adb shell get superuser (by typing "su") and type: mount -o rw,remount /system
After that you can move files to*/system. Just don't forget to reboot or remount /system as read-only when done.

Root explorer allows pasting and permissions changing. I'm not sure I'm using the right apk. I had a nexus one that installed and worked (though not able to change lock screen). I uninstalled it, and installed 2 different versions of the Samsung app. It never gets recognized on the reboot like the nexus one did. I assume I'm using the wrong one. Any link to an official one? I am on 4.1.2 stock.

Any specific way to install it all back? I put everything back in system/app and rebooted. Nothing changed, it's not installed, and Android didn't "Update Apps" on the reboot. I try to install it with package installer like any other app and that fails. I've tried your odex and mine (which was never deleted).

[XPOSED] [AFTV1] WallpaperEnabler - working Widgets & Wallpapers

Hi!
This is an xposed module that enables the wallpaper service on the amazon firetv1 (not compatible with AFTV2 atm).
It is based on the findings of @schybiorz, so many thanks to him!
You will also need to sideload following apk files from his thread's download:
com.android.systemui
com.android.wallpaper.apk
com.android.wallpaper.livepicker.apk (optional if you want some live wallpapers)

I tested it with NovaLauncher and both images and live wallpapers work fine.
Also widgets work fine now!
(updated with systemui package also being mandatory)
Atm this is NOT compatible with FTV2 devices, as it would require different apk files.
I will update this if someone mods them accordingly.

Nice will try tomorrow. Anyway to use it on firedtv? I don't use nova on fire tv anymore.

Wonderful. I've been using live wallpaper on mine since he posted how to do it. It works great!

I updated the OP as i forgot the systemui package has to be included. Thanks to schybiorz for the hint!

You should post a link to the background apks I was confused which link it was took me like 5 min to figure out lol.
You should still provide his link so if he gets any $$ from downloads he won't lose nothing.
It also does not work on my FireTV followed the instrcutions,sideloaded all 3 apks, tried 2 different launchers. I can select live wallpaper but it just won't load (regular wallpaper works fine) so something is wrong. Any idea what it is?

no problem, cause his xposed-module is only the tool, to edit framework-res on the fly (no need to install via cwm anymore ^-^
u still need the other files mentioned in my post.

I can't get live wallpapers to work at all without CWM. When I select it it does nothing but I was able to change regular wallpaper which is still great
any ideas on how to fix it?
@schybiorz @superkoal I can make a video if you guys want to see what I mean.

have u install live wallpaper picker and any live wallpapers (from a stock 4.2.2 rom)?
otherwise it won't work,cause android doasn't know that u have them on your system.

Yea i did from your uploaded link. So I can't use any live wallpaper I want ? Even the nexus wallpaper does not work.
It's weird I did install.. I even did twice to make sure it's installed. What else can I try ?

You can try to make the wallpaper.apk a system app (move it from /data/app to /system/app and reboot).
Might be necessary, haven't tried without it.

Link2sd can do it so I will use it for that. You mean any live wallpaper I want to use make it system app right?

No, i meant the com.android.wallpaper.apk, i pushed this one to system.
To be safe you could also move the com.android.systemui.apk to /system/app
The live wallpapers don't need to be system apps.
Let me know if this works, then I will update OP when I'm back home.

Another possibility would be wrong file permissions, you can check it with es file explorer (or any other root explorer) or adb shell:
Code:
adb shell
su
ls -l /data/app/com.android.wallpaper.apk
the filename could also be com.android.wallpaper-1.apk (or sometimes ...-2.apk), you can check via
Code:
ls /data/app
Compare it to the other files in the folder, I think he permissions should be rw-rw-r.

Interesting I get this error.. I did install all 3 APKS so I am not sure what is going on here...

It's like it is not installing itself.. because it's not there but ADBfire shows installed wow that is weird,but afer adding -1 to the name of apk I get this:

So the first error you get was my mistake, there is always -1 or -2 at the end of the filename.
But your output of ls /data/app shows that's it's not a user app.
Did you already move it to /system/app?
As for the permission:
the apk file must have the same permission as all the other apks in the folder.
Just pick one like
Code:
ls -l /data/app/com.teslacoilsw.launcher-1.apk
then you can use chmod to make them equal (e.g.
Code:
chmod 664 /data/app/com.android.wallpaper-1.apk
)
664 means rw-rw-r
644 means rw-r-r
...

I used link2sd to convert it to system app.. looks like it didn't go through. I will do it again soon when I have more time
EDIT: lol this is so weird.. what I did was convert it to system app.. then convert to user app.. not it works wow this crap is so random but now works thx!

works perfectly, got live wallpapers to work but haven't tried still photos and the only widget I've tried is Hd widget...any other widgets working?
