I have S4 with MDL bootloader, was running GE based roms...and now want to restore it to STOCK and upgrade to latest firmware. Giving it away to my father so want to make completely stock with ability to receive OTAs .
Last night flashed via Oden stock 4.2.2 (MDL) rom, modem, and restored counter to (0). Tried to upgrade from the phone to the latest firmware, but getting the error (Processing Failed). Installed Kies 2.x.x and it would not recognized the device. Please Help to install latest stock 4.4.4 rom with (0) counter
Is the error when it tries to update or when checking for updates?
when checking for updates from the phone it self, but Kies also fails to connect to the phone.
You may want to try again later. Also does your computer recognize it at all?

What about bootloader? and setting the counter to 0? 4.3 will flash new bootloader with KNOX and then I'll never be able to restore to 100% stock, or I'm wrong?!
For your phone to be stock right now it would have to be on NK2 firmware. Nothing wrong with that.
Knox only matters for the first 12 months, after that it's your phone not Samsung's.

As long as you don't root it or modify it in anyway, you'll always be 100 percent stock

If I flash latest firmware via Odin, will it get OTAs in the future?
Not if your rooted /custom recovery and debloated, as you remove all the T-Mobile and Samsung bloat you will not get any ota updates, ( I haven't in16 months ) . I run stock /debloated /rooted.
You can run stock rooted or find a stable custom rom to use.

Fixed it.
Re flashed the firmware via Odin again, cleared cache and data before first boot and thats fixed it!

Just got my S3 from ATT last week which came with ICS. ATT won't OTA upgrade to JB, so I am stuck with Kies. Problem is that Kies crashes every time I try and upgrade the phone. Can I flash teh stock rom using ODIN and is this wise? (will it increase the flash counter?)

I do not believe the flash counter will be tripped if you are using a stock image (even a rooted stock image).

You are correct, sir. Flashing official stock, or even properly root injected stock packages, will not increase your flash counter.
If you can reset your flash counter, why would it matter?
Just to say you have never did it
Hello! I am new to this forum but I am in a little fickle.
I have the Samsung Note 2 TMOBILE and couple weeks ago, I updated to 4.3 through regular OTA. I then rooted and flashed Cyanogenmod 11 and thus, voided my Samsung Knox Warranty bugger thing. I then attempted to go back to stock by flashing stock 4.1.1 through Odin and it worked! I tried to do OTA update again but I realized that the Samsung Knox Void kept me from reaching update services... So I was stuck at 4.1.1 Stock. From there, I was able to flash other custom roms and everything worked.
However, this is a problem for me. The 4.1.2 update from Tmobile was what enabled LTE on my note 2. So right now, I have the old baseband(?) that does not allow LTE. I even attempted to flash a non-knox 4.1.2 (which allowed LTE) through Odin and everything worked until the last second, where Odin is supposed to flash PASS..... It flashed FAIL and I was unable to update my baseband(?).
I was wondering if there is another way to enable LTE by updating to 4.1.2 in any way? Or is this completely unable due to the Samsung Knox?
Thank you in advance.

So i got a tab s 8.4 lte
rooted it
it disabled knox and tripped my knox warranty
then i installed kitkat sd fix
now i have undone the sd fix and unrooted my phone
but it didnt ask me to reenable knox
so will i get ota updates now or not
You can check by clicking 'update now'.
It says that the software on your device has been modified by an unauthorised way
Please visit the service centre
That means you can't.
I don't know whether knox bit is checked or some changes in the ROM. To make sure you could try to re-flash full stock ROM. But my bet would be, that you can't OTA with knox tipped.
So can anyone tell me how i can flash an incremental ota update via odin
or can i do so via TWRP
or is my last hope just flashing a full custom rom
just download the official firmware of your device and flash it with odin... after that if got any OTA update it will run. OTA only run with stock official firmware. no matter if you got knox 0x1 or not.
Just flashed TWRP
I think i'll flash a custom rom instead
BTW is your Selamba rom stable edan????????????
What does OTA require exactly? I am on stock ROM, rooted, skyhigh kernel. No OTA. Is it the kernel preventing OTA?
Instead of using Odin, you can as well use Kies, it does the update automatically.
But OTA is most convenient.

KIES. Don't forget KIES. We all hate it but it works when you want everything back to stock. I don't think the Knox bit alone will prevent you from getting OTA updates.

It's always been my understanding from previous versions of tabs/Android that once you have installed a custom recovery, OTAs will fail. Download sure but fail to install.

Kernel will trip Knox, as well as flashing a custom rom or installing a custom recovery (safestrap is ok). A custom kernel or pretty much any customizations will stop ota updates unless you do them via Odin as suggested. If knox doesnt block ota, you can Odin to stock ncg, take ota flash back to NCG kernel to reroot on towelroot and then flash new official ota kernel to keep root while ota updated. Personally I went to ne9 and ran back to ncg.. Won't be flashing anything until android L. NE9 was worthless, just killed root.
Hi i have been trying to update my att SG3(rooted) 4.1.2 for a while now, when i try to update to 4.3 it says it does not have any update available but i know that this phone can go up to 4.4.2 kitkat,i have tried to do it with odin but unfortunaley i couldnt find the original firmaware in sam-mobiles ,plz help,it does not necesserly have to go to 4.3 if you guys also now a way to go directly to 4.4.2 it will be great.and i have also tried before rooting my phone, still didnt work.P.S:sorry for my bad english.
If you have the 4.1.2 bootloader on your phone, the simplest way would be to flash back to stock ATT 4.1.1 with Odin and use OTA update to get to 4.4.2.
Using Odin will wipe all of your data off your phone.
You can also odin flash MJB firmware available in the General section. Then you'd only need one ota to get to 4.4.2.

Yes. When folks here say to flash/update bootloader, they are taking about the full firmware. (Kinda confused me at first too)

There are various pieces of software that need to be installed in order to all of the various functions to work. The main components are:
the bootloader http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...bootloader-on-android-phones-complete-guide/;
the modem/baseband http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseband_processor; and
the operating system or ROM itself.
ATT never released a full firmware (ROM, bootloader, baseband) for 4.1.2 but they did for 4.1.1.
Since your phone is on 4.1.2, you would download the firmware from the previous post, download Odin, install the USB drivers, and flash the firmware.
ok,thank you both DocHoliday77 and audit13
Just a quick FYI, it's more than just the bootloader/modem. The firmware includes the following partitions:
aboot - bootloader
NON-HLOS.BIN - modem/baseband
RPM - resource and power management
sbl2/sbl3 - secondary bootloaders
TZ - Trust Zone
System - rom
Boot - kernel
Cache
Recovery
The first group MUST all match. If they don't it can hard brick.
(This is why I've always wondered why people on the AT&T forums always say to just update bootloader and modem. I'm used to referring to it as the base firmware if not including the system/rom components, or full firmware if including the system.)
Sorry, a little OT. Not anything to be overly concerned about, just me being overly technical is all.
@op
If you follow audit13's instructions you'll be fine.

Now that you're on 4.1.1, use the free method to sim unlock your phone before running OTA updates.
When you are in download mode, do you see the word "Custom" anywhere? Did you run triangle away before flashing back to 4.1.1?

I have the galaxy s4 SGH-M919N which is the Metro PCS version of the S4. Back when it was at 4.3 I think, I flashed the T-Mobile firmware to get 4.4. Currently I'm rooted and using a 5.1 ROM. I'm getting a new phone soon and would like to reset the flash counter and everything back to stock Metro PCS to sell the phone. On Metro PCS the model number is SGH-M919N and T-Mobile it's SGH-M919 but on the back of my phone it days SGH-M919N so I need to get it back on the stock no root Metro PCS. How would I do it? Thanks.
If you had 4.3 firmware you can't reset the counter. All you can do is flash the latest firmware and factory reset
With 5.0.1 don't you factory reset then flash latest firmware (kitkat) ?
