So in comparing the Sprint Note 4 to Sprint Note 3 the 4 has horrible signal in same areas where 3 was good. What gives and is there a fix? Using a different PRL or radio?

Many have this issue and many do not. What I can tell you from first hand experience is this.
You will complain to Sprint for about three weeks. Make several visits to a store and finally if you are lucky you will get to talk to their top tier tech support. That tech will tell you that according to a log that only the techs at that level can see, that Samsung has reported that a certain number of Note 4 phones are having issue connecting to Sprint towers and need to be reflashed.
This reflash is not a USB operation but JTAG operation and requires it to be done by a Samsung service center. I was lucky as their is one just 20 minutes from my apartment in Plano. So I got a service number from Samsung support over the phone and took it in. They kept it for 3 hours, ran diags and reflashed and said nothing is wrong with it. Ran a speed test there and 27/15. Got home and was back to maybe 1/.05. According to their coverage map and the position of my home tower as they call it I am in the heart of SPARK but still get only these speeds.
So in a Nutshell Sprint will tell you the phone has an issue Samsung needs to fix. Samsung will tell you there is no issue with the phone and the problem is the Sprints towers and network. Neither company wants to fess up as neither wants to take the backlash when it goes public that Samsung released a certain number of crap phones for once and that Sprint not only bought them but resold them with full knowledge of them being defective.

How are they losing money when they will not let you return it for a refund? The best they will do is give you another Note 4 like they did for me and it too still has the same issue. I can tell you it is not the tower as my brother has an S4 and the exact same plan and his phone right next to mine in my coffee table was getting 15MB/s while my N4 was getting 1MB/s.

Same thing on 2 note 4 in my house... S4 gets 10 MEG, note 4 gets 3G... Like dialup modem... The tech said to set Spark plug gap to factory spec and restart device to effect Spark speed of 0.01 Meg to 50 Meg. If that dosnt work he said look for a wifi source to use which helps keep the network faster. Amazing people still have access to such slow data speed, thanks Sprint!
For me it's bars. 1 or 2 bars At my place but 5 or 6 with Note 3. So some of us can agree there is an issue but is there a fix?

Like I said in the previous thread, neither want to make the call and accept responsibility. So no there is no fix as long as both companies deny an issue.
I bet it depends on which city you're in and how far along the Sprint Spark rollout is. The note 4 is triband (spark compatible) while the previous notes are not.
When I got the LG G2 (triband) my 4g speeds were bad compared to my previous single band phone. A few months later, the speeds got significantly better due to the rollout.
My note 4 speeds are really good as well.

Based on Sprint my home tower which is just a few blocks from here is a SPARK tower and supposed to be fully provisioned but if it is, then that still leaves the phone as being the issue.
If the phones data header in it's radio is programmed wrong with the wrong providers header which is done by Samsung then Sprint towers will not identify the phone correctly as being SPARK enable. The phone will connect to the LTE signal for a moment but since the tower can't ID it as a SPARK/Sprint device the tower then drops it to the 3G band which is what happens with most of the complaints.
It will hold the LTE signal for a little bit after rebooting or turning on and turning off airplane mode. But then it will drop the 3G with in minutes and stay there. The phone as it is operates just like a phone that has been unlocked and is being used on a network that does not support it's high speed bands. That is why i suspect the ID header in the radio has been programmed to another provider and not Sprint by accident.
If some one has JTAG equipment and a known problem phone they might be able to prove this or if they have a way to see what the phone is identifying itself as when connecting to a tower we might can prove this is the case.
^^What you are talking about was the exact thing that happened to my LG G2 where it would drop to 3G and not go back to 4G without either an airplane mode cycle, reboot, or update PRL. It was fixed when sprint upgraded its towers near my house beyond just being Spark enabled. It has something to do with an eCSFB issue that is being slowly fixed across the nation. More info is on the s4gru website.

please, go to twitter @sprintCare and post all of these comments. i am in a limbo with them for a while and they are denying this problem. they claim no one is complaining and that it is only for me.
i went through everything that you all went through from phone swapping to software upgrade and downgrade, SIM card replacement, all levels of tech support and they still all claim they never heard about it.
No matter what happens, i am either 1 bar or on 3G (more than 90% of the time).
say it a loud on twitter and Facebook(not sure about their Facebook page).
Does any one know if this is specific to the Note 4. My wife and both have the Note 4 and are constantly on 1 bar. My wife said she has already missed calls. Good news is we are still in our 14 day period where we can return for another device.

I bought a Tmobile Galaxy S3 on new years from staples, and since ive got the phone ive been experiencing strange 4g speeds. While im in my house, I always have full signal strength, and it always says 4G. I live in the Bronx in New York City, and when the 4g is working properly, I get upwards of 20 megabits down, and 1-2 up. Now I could literally be sitting in the exact same spot, and later ill test the phone and it says 0.2 - 0.3 megabits, and like over 1000 ping and the up is so slow it doesnt even measure it. It usually comes back after waiting, turning airplane mode off and on multiple times or doing a battery pull. I find it strange that I can get either 21 mbps or 0.3 in the same house, while always having full bars. In the phone status sometimes it would say UTMS or HSPA, so it does switch from 3g to 4g sometimes. The thing is my previous phone was Nexus S with 3g and im pretty sure I never had a problem loading a simple image in my house because the internet was so slow. I consistently pulled 3-6 mbps on that phone. I tried calling t-mobile 3 times and they give me the same basic crap, like clear your cache, make sure airplane mode is off (really?) make sure youre network mode is on auto (i tried auto and wcdma only and it still gets slow) and all that other stuff. Is there anything else I could try to see if its a network or phone issue?
It sounds like it might be something with your local tower. I would call Tmobile and put in a repair ticket.

Thanks, I just did that. Called t-mobile and just directly asked them to check for tower issues, and they filed a complaint. They said to check back in 3 days, hopefully this gets fixed, or else it might be the phone. Do you think flashing different modems would change anything?

Completely stock 4.1.1, with UVDLJA modem, which is the latest I believe. The phone is relatively new so I wanted to try touchwiz before I rooted. Does installing something like cm10 change the modem? Or is it independent of rom/kernel. I saw an application for tmo that can change between multiple modems pretty quickly, I might give it a try.

I work for T-Mo,
If I may lend my opinion,
To me, it definitely sounds like the tower. If you go from 20Mbit down to 0.2, and with 1000ms latency, it's super obvious there is something
wrong with the tower, or there is significant demand on the tower from other users, hey its NYC population density is insane.
Something to note as well, New York City is "in progress" for "network modernization" where they are switching to 1900Mhz.
This is why some people who have iPhones are now getting 3G in certain areas, unlocked devices, as well as AT&T phones can have 3G down there.
Due to this, since there is quite a lot of switching around going on down there, that's probably what's going on.
Example:
http://www.tmonews.com/2013/01/t-mobiles-network-modernization-what-is-it-where-can-i-get-coverage/
Hope it helps.
I see, well that makes sense. I dont really mind if its a tower issue because thatll be fixed eventually, I just would of hated if I had to replace the phone, it would of been such a hassle because I didnt buy it direct from t-mo. Thanks to both of you!
Also, since t-mobile seems to be using multiple bands for 4g, I guess it would be better to leave it on auto in network settings?

If it helps you at all to see if you are on a different band than 1700/2100mhz
You can go into the dialer and do:
*#0011#
Up top mine says band 4
Which is for 1700mhz AWS
BAND 2
which is for 1900mhz PCS.
You might be on band 4 or 2 on a tower by tower basis, or if they are making adjustments
You might be switched but that is above my pay grade lol

I have the same issue. I'm in the SF Bay Area and even though TMobile's site has where I live and work as dark green (excellent 4g) I am lucky to get even one bar. Half the time I get network errors. Anyone else with TMobile experience anything like this? Any chance it's something that'll get resolved before my 30 day return period ends?
do any of you have other tmobile phones to compare signals with? if so, do that and if there are major differences talk to a tmobile store about getting a replacement.
these might be isolated incidents, because the majority of people are getting fully functional units

my data speeds are *top notch*.
you are either in an area thats out of tmobiles footprint or have a defective unit.
best bet would be to wait till tmobile actually gets the GS4 on display in the store.
when they do, go to your nearest tmob, and do a speedtest.net comparison with the demo model, and yours. if they are similar, then your part of the bay is legacy; if there is a big difference; 3,4 5 etc megabit difference; your unit may be worth exchanging for a new unit.

Still no signal inside my workplace. Will do more tests. It does seem the signal is more stable, but it's only been a couple days.
Also, 4G LTE flashed for a couple seconds at my house. I live in the D.C metro area. Nice.
I have the HTC One in the Phoenix market. LTE is difficult to find more than a few bars on. 4G HSPA+ has been very easy to get full bars on.
I'm somewhat convinced T-Mobile is still working on building out in even LTE and re-farmed markets.

Its funny how T-Mobile improves their network and yet many years later I still don't have service in places where I had no service maybe 5-6 years ago. And on top of this I noticed even more dead spots. I think T-Mobile should be working on that along with building penatration.....I would much rather have 3G everywhere then LTE almost nowhere.
Lately it became very frustrating since my wife has no service at work, i have no service at work, and i recently moved to different location and still no service....and God forbid I loose my wife in the mall, I have zero chances of finding her because no T-Mobile service inside.
Just got my S4 today and did not realize theres LTE where I work (fremont) which I never saw on my note 2. Even went out to lunch and was still getting LTE the next street over. So just to test I'm now back on my note 2 and it is not picking up LTE at my work. That tells me the radio on the s4 is much better.

yea its something with the S4's phone/modem. I get bars and shows signal strength of 3 to 4 bars and i can make call but no internet in certain areas all around Los Angeles County/Orange County/Las Vegas/NYC. To test it i had my buddy go with me with his LG L9 and my buddy with his LG L9 phone would work fine on the calls and data/internet meanwhile my S4 would only get calls but no data as if it was a deadspot. i would have to go around like 1/4 or so before it would work again. its really strange not to mention annoying. I noticed this started happening to me after i upgraded from MDB to the MDL baseband and after i unlocked the phone using the "debug service menu". i wish i knew someone else with a stock TMO S4 to test my findings out more. I also cant wait for more tmo S4 modems. ive been thinking of ODINing back to stock MDB to test my theory, but i have just been lazy.

i think it was a TMO LTE tower upgrade issues. after doing the Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Network mode > and switching between the WCDMA and GSM one or the other now will work. better to have some internet than no internet, weird how the S4 just wont switch over to the working GSM internet if WCDMA fails....i guess when they coded it they figured if u have bars it "should work in theory" but they were wrong ...personally i think this should be considered a "bug"
I thought I was the only one. I found that if i keep my diztronic tpu case on while in my pocket it destroys all signal for some reason. I take it off and its fine.

I further tested my theory and went without my case all day. It didnt appear to do anything different at all. I am on CM10.1, I think I might go back to stock for awhile to see if it changes the fluctuating signal issue.
Just curious on how everyones signal is and which baseband they are on?
I'm on M919UVUAMDL and I have seen up to 15% of no signal while my S3 had 0 signal loss in a regular day.
since I've had my gnex these are my favorite highlights of verizon service
1. LTE started at 25 megs it's now at 10
2. My unlimited contract is technically still valid but for some reason I can barely ever break 4gb since they stopped offering it
3. Following my internet service Verizon now pre compresses data like pictures sent to my phone = crappy resolutions
4. 2 years after the launch of LTE the service area has steadily declined
5. Google voice magically stopped working on the first day of last months billing period = 140 extra dollar bill they wont discount
6. They dont improve the signal they rewrite the software to display more bars
7. When you go to the speed test app magically your phone is faster, something Samsung was recently caught doing
8. This month our 17% employee discount mysteriously needs to be renewed - they forgot to notify us - last time we went for 11 months without it. And we can't do it online.
9. My phone has problems charging but they claim the internet is lies about it being a charging port issue even though I can wiggle it fixed in front of them.
10. bloatware
11. Mysterious connection delays that they say is "solved" by purchasing a new phone
I know I have some more, the point being that before you go out and get a Verizon phone because it's supposed to the best service, look around and make sure it still is.
In my area Wyoming. Verizon really screwed up and sold alltel to at&t. Verizon used to piggy back on alltel towers and alltel was the main cell provider. At&t is now turning off the old alltel service on the towers and making them gsm only. Seems like my service gets worse monthly now and some areas like where I work have quit completely but att that was non existent before is full bars on my work phone. If it wasn't for their better costumer service and having unlimited data I would be done. They day they say no more unlimited data I say goodbye. Probably go back to dumb phone as I can't afford a 12gb data plan.

Not that I'm terribly happy with Verizon, but I'm not sure what you mean by some of these?
1. Probably congestion with all the 4g phones.
2. How can you not get more than 4gb? Does your service stop?
3. How would this do this without extra local software?
4. 4g service is pretty extensive in my area, but it's no bigger than their 3g was and att now has much better coverage.
5. How would you suddenly be charged if Google voice stops working?
9. Likely crud in your micro use port. Sharpen a toothpick to get it out. I've had this from time to time.

That's really odd. I will say that i've noticed a tad bit of slowdown in general on their LTE network but i would attribute that to the great increase of traffic compared to what it was when the Nexus originally came out.
I just broke 8 gigs of data usage this month, not sure why you are having problems. Do you have insurance on your phone?
I disagree with everything you're saying, OP.
The next town over, to this day, I get around 40 Mbps down consistently, and last month I used 17 GB.
Speeds and coverage depend on the phone of course, like the Droid RAZR M RIGHT NEXT TO MY GALAXY NEXUS was getting around 2x the download speeds.

I just wanted to update my previous post about the service Wyoming. They actually are putting up towers and 4g in the middle of nowhere that was previously lost when they sold to att. So my service is actually getting better now. I have service now where I need it.

I don't know how to address all of your points, because I'm pretty sure some of them aren't problems with Verizon's network, but I can say that network speed was absolutely destined to decrease after the boom of LTE phones.
It's happened with every network after they hit a critical mass of LTE devices.
Network congestion is a serious problem that isn't easily solved. Throwing more towers at it can help mitigate the issue, but much of the problem boils down to limited spectrum- the same reason why populated wifi connections are unusable. It doesn't have to do with the routers being bottlenecked, it's simply the spectrum being overcrowded.

Same thing happened to me. My 4G is now almost non-existent at my house. Used to get 20mbs down. I still broke 80gbs last month (sick and staying at home) but speeds are a fraction of what it used to be.
I opened a T-Mobile line to test out their service in my area (LA/OC) and its pretty awesome. Dead spot here and there but nothing I didn't experience on Verizon either. Also wanted to test how true their unlimited data is. Its been 3 days and pushing 8 gigs. I bypassed the tether block as well. Looking good so far but still got 20 more days to go.
Also picked up an S4 with T-Mobile. Really blows my Gnex to shame. Tethering and charging doesnt turn my phone into a brick of fire. Its been a few hours and the phone is still very cool. Battery even lasts 2-3x longer than the Gnex even while tethering vs Gnex being idle. Its crazy.

I will be coming from a Note 3 which was perfect until the Kitkat update. I now have horrible signal and am sick of it. I live in a rural area and want to make sure the Note 4 does not have the same issues before I spend another $700 on a phone (I have unlimited data). Thanks!

every phone is different since most of them have different CPU and antenna. it's too soon to tell though as most folks haven't even received their pre orders yet.
I have this question as well. I'll be coming from an S3, and it has terrible signal strength. It's the one thing that I've always hated about the S3. I'll be interested to see everyone's results.
My N3 had terrible reception, I moved to LG G3 which was much better. I switched to new N4 yesterday and this phone outperforms both on signal strength. I don't drop data or voice anywhere I used to with the previous 2 phones.

I'm in the exact same position. I'm really hoping the N4 outperforms the S3.

Yes, I realize all of that. I just wanted to get the question out there.

It is still early but initial impressions seem to be positive. I am fond of Motorola for their excellent radios. Coming from a moto x, I don't see any difference in signal. And comparing from my previous note 3, it seems to have improved in my area.
Worse case is that if it doesn't work well in your area, you should be able to return the phone and get something else without incurring a restocking fee. I was hesitant since I wanted to wait for the droid turbo but since playing with the note 4, I'm keeping it. Good luck.
Im having a few signal issues i only get 1 bar some places but it doesnt seem to affect call quality

I had a note 3 that held a LTE signal at 2 bars very well at my house until the 4.4.4 update, after that update it would be one 3g most of the time.
I got my note 4 yesterday and had it all day and it never once dropped to 3g, It held the LTE signal very well.
The note 4 is definitely better than the note 3 as far as signal quality.
I can verify this because I just bought a note 4 coming from a note 3. I was unable to get service in my house where I lived as well as many other places I should have. I bought the note 4 yesterday and all my service issues have been fixed. So yes the signal is much better.

using note 4 today and best service i have had to date. phone has great dbm and first speedtest pulled 47 mbps download!!!
My Verizon N4 so far has slightly better signal than my LG G3, which had good service to begin with. No complaints so far with signal strength / net speed. So far my only complaint is the message + lag when taking a photo indoors. Reminds me of the annoying image stabilization option on the S5 that slowed the camera way down

This shouldn't be a concern on a different device, as Android isn't like Windows (in that a specific version is compatible on all PCs). The firmware (OS) on your device is tailor made for that device, and because of this, the concern you have about signal quality on the Note 4 vs the Note 3 isn't valid (not that it's not a valid concern, but that it doesn't apply). This is why you can't flash firmware from one model to a different model, and the only way for you to garnish an answer is by either speaking to someone in your area that has a Note 4 on VZW or buy a Note 4. I'm not sure if the Note 3 had the ability, but from the Note 4 settings it appears that you make Google Voice your default phone service... not just for dialing, but for receiving as well. I can't verify this, as I haven't tried it out yet, however it would help in your situation. As far as signal goes, I've had no issues with my Note 4 since buying it.
Something to consider... the Nexus 6 comes out next month and one of the unique features it has, over that of the bootloader being unlocked, is that is is the first smartphone with a hot swappable SIM... meaning you can buy it on Verizon and switch at random with other U.S. CDMA and GSM carriers by simply swapping SIMs. The only two differences between the Note 4 and the NX6 is the NX6 has a 13MP camera vs that of the 16MP on the Note 4 and it doesn't come with a S Pen (it also doesn't have the novelty features like a heartbeat monitor or UV exposure reader)... hardware is all the same, quad core 2.7Ghz processor, 3GB of RAM, rapid charge, etc. I'm assuming you have Verizon here, but you know you don't have to pay full retail upfront right? Because manufacturer's and carriers can't test for every variable, occasionally a firmware update will cause an issue with signal viability... have you informed Verizon of the issue, as well as made Samsung aware?
Something else to keep in mind... Android 5.0 [Lollipop] will be released to the Note 4 within a few months, and if you prefer a rooted device, then I would caution against buying anything other than the NX6, as it is highly improbable rooting will be possible on bootloader locked devices running Android 5... is it impossible, no; highly improbable, yes. Checkout ChainFire's Google+ post from 10/18 or 10/19 for an indepth explanation as to why.
This phone gets FANTASTIC reception! Better then iPhone 5 which dropped 4g all the time and better then even my Galaxy S5. MUCH better then the Note 3 which has about the same Signal issues as the iphone 6......
I have a iPhone 6plus and note 4 and my note isn't getting more then two bars when my iPhone is getting 4...could my phone be faulty?

Thanks guys for the feedback. I understand that signal problems with one phone are unrelated to signal issues with another phone. I was just giving my background that I don't want to go down the road I have with the N3.
Asking about signal issues with the National is a valid question.

Starting a week ago (that's the earliest I noticed it, at least), my phone has been occasionally losing 4G, going to 3G, and all the way down to 1x.
It seems to figure itself out after a minute or two but, during this time, I've noticed texts don't send.
A reboot will get the phone back on 4G.
After doing some searching, I found a thread on Verizon's "support" site but there's no solution provided (surprise).
Anyone have any thoughts or have been experiencing similar issues?

To add to this oddity, I've only noticed this happening when I'm at my house.
That said, I'm not on my phone much when at work. I'll try to keep a better eye on it. Even though you wouldn't think my location would be relevant considering this is happening to others.

I had the same issue on 5.0.1 all three times I upgraded to it, 4G then 3G then 1x, back to 3G, back to 1x, then 4G, back to 3G. So annoying, back to KK which has a solid and steady radio.
I figured it had something to do with the radio but waco2hot33's post stating it still occurred when rolled back to KK made me wonder.
Let's hope root for the retail editions is achieved soon. Or, you know, at least a decent update from Verizon and Samsung. So... Yeah, let's hope for root.

Trees
I have been having the same issues and Verizon told me that due to spring time being here there is more interference with the trees! But I had not a single issue with the phone until I took the update. So now I am stuck...I love my Note 4 and I am committed to the Samsung ecosystem but some days these bugs are so bad and annoying that it is leaving bad taste in my mouth. Was considering switching to the Nexus 6 because I just don't think I can deal with this until the Note 5 comes out in November.
I will say that it seems to only happen when I'm at my home and not really anywhere else. That said, this never happened before the Lollipop update.
Its made me wonder if they change the PRL after the phone gets older. I have noticed most of my new phones get great signal and close to a year later or after a major update, the signal goes down significantly. This is my personal speculation.
I can chime in here. I have a dev edition. I've had the dreaded Samsung radio bug from the beginning. If I drop from 4g or 3g I must reboot to regain data. It's a pain. There's a spot on way home from work that always kills it.
Since upgrading to lollipop though my data would pretty much stay on all the time. I installed the xposed radio bug fix as apparently it's a known bug. Within the last week though I've noticed extra drops. Verizon is likely restructuring frequencies on towers.

I'm glad I found this post. I'm having the same exact problem only when I'm at home. It is frustrating because I live in the middle of the city where there should be no issues. Verizon response is for me to buy a $300 dollar signal extender which actually runs off of my xfin it Internet. But get this, they will still charge me data and minutes. For right now I have to step outside next to the curb to get a signal. Ironically while standing in the middle of the street, my phone dropped the call 4 times while on the line with customer service where they had to keep calling me back[emoji35] I didn't have this issue pretty Lollipop.
