Correct. But it is also possible to inject a kernel if a bootloader unlock isn't available.
You can download the stock boot.img from here:

So, help me out here... I am doing research on the kernel... basically it is like a pre-rooted thing? Wouldn't think trip knox? Thanks.

Rooting trips knox. By the time you get here you've already made your peace with that
Modified builds are uploading now. The stockish backups will be compiled later tonight.

Thank you for the quick reply. Haha I figured as much but they way the post is set up, it seemed like you could use heimdall to flash it. Knew it was too good to be true yet! Awesome work getting it set up already though
The fact that there's something posted in the development section for this phone gives me some hope that we'll achieve root soon.

Just to prevent any false hope, the configuration for the kernel was included with the T-Mobile version of the source so that is what made porting it so quickly possible. Root may not be as easy. I do hope it is, though.

With the prerequisites (rooted, working Heimdall / copy of flashify), yes
There is a root method for the At&t Note 4 now?
Note 4 owners over in the Verizon section are putting together a fair effort to investigate rooting themselves. We AT&T users should have a similar thread.
The Verizon thread, for reference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/talk-root-t2908919
T-Mobile and Sprint have CF-Autoroot but not yet for AT&T and Verizon. So (I think) a new root should work for either, all the more reason to work together.
In the Verizon thread the general process was posted:

I have no vested interest in this (other than seeing vzw get screwed over) but someone needs to get the ball rolling here:
1. Grab the Odin tar then boot.img to get kallsyms
2. Post partition info
3. Grab kernel source and confirm latest Linux kernel cves are patched/not patched
4. Find PoC for Linux exploits for 2014 Linux kernel cves and port them to android and test
If you have to ask what any of the above are/do Google is your friend.

Feel free to read through the other thread for info on CVEs and stuff.
The Verizon owners have to wait for kernel source but I guess our's is already posted (N910A):
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=Sm-n910
SHA1 and SHA256 for the kernel source zip that I downloaded, for reference:
99e00529ce613548664f3c986cd7df886b54caa0 SM-N910A_NA_KK_Opensource.zip
9a5dfcbcd1b77367507b9374afd4f1e1afd505255ff48b4d3779b235974650c0 SM-N910A_NA_KK_Opensource.zip
This might not be necessary as someone like Chainfire may already be working on a rooting method, but we might make it slightly easier.
Any contributions by more knowledgeable people are greatly appreciated.
Anyone want to post their kallsyms, boot, or full image of an AT&T phone?
I'll try to post myself if I can figure out of I'm supposed to use Odin or if the way the Verizon owners got their's was with some Verizon-only tool.
We have firmware here:

The kernel source is here:

Nice! Yeah the kallsyms should definitely be in there.
Here are the kallsyms from the ATT image.

You don't. The kallsyms are information about the internal kernel functions, useful for writing code which gets you root access.
Partition information sits in a .PIT file inside the factory image (if it's available), or you can dump it from a running phone.

I'll extract them again, maybe I missed something...
Edit: Gah, still had kernel.Image extacted from the Verizon image, and didn't notice the message saying "kernel.Image: already exists; not overwritten". The attachment above has been updated. My apologies, and thanks for catching it.
This may be interesting though. The nexus devices have a check box in the developer settings to OEM unlock the phone. Basically you just check a box and it's boot loader is unlocked.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...-6-9-requires-checking-box-developer-options/
Maybe this can be used to find a loop hole on lollipop for this device. I think there could b be a small chance this device could get unlocked after the update. It might actually be easier.

While I appreciate the speculation, that's all this is, and at the moment we don't have Lollipop. I believe the OP specified good steps that should be looked into. I have downloaded the source code but am not exactly sure how to be looking for other then doing the steps as outlined: Finding the build date of the kernel then looking up know vulnerabilities in it. Obviously this is going to take a while and makes sense on where to look. Why focus on something we don't have when we could focus on what we do.
tl;dr We need to stay focused on the current task at hand. Also it'd be nice if this thread didn't get derailed with speculations.

I don't see it either. Their tweet says our phone specifically has been added. Not sure of the supported devices hasn't been updated or what. I'm kinda sketchy about trying stuff that I haven't seen discussed on here. Does anyone know if the stock firmware is available yet.? At least that way if someone ends up with a brick we can at least Flash it back to normal

Pretty sure the Verizon crowd already dismissed this method. Likely a hoax.
Tried to find something in their forum but nothing... Something tell me that this is fake
Tried it and didn't get root.
MultiSystem is a powerful tool for locked- and unlocked-bootloader Android devices. it's used here to hijack the boot process & boot from a virtual ROOTED LP IMG in a 2nd EXT4 partition on the microSD card, that's independent on the physical system partition.
IMPROTANT INFORMATION: THE METHOD USED IN THIS THREAD IS SUCCESSFUL ON UNROOTED DEVELOPER EDITION WITHOUT USING A RECOVERY OR AUTO-ROOT - AND DOES NOT TRIP KNOX FLAG. FOR RETAIL EDITION, THE LOCKED BOOTLOADER SENDS A FLAG TO THE KERNEL TO WRITE PROTECT PARTITIONS INCLUDING SYSTEM.
POTENTIAL SOLUTION: BUILDING A KERNEL MODULE TO DISABLE WRITE PROTECTION AFTER PATCHING MEMORY TO BYPASS KERNEL MODULE VERIFICATION AND LOAD OUR UNSIGNED KERNEL MODULE – UTILIZING THE TEMPORARY ROOT ACCESS. WE ARE INVESTIGATING THIS SOLUTION. HOWEVER, IT MAY TAKE A LONG TIME AND IS NOT 100% GUARANTEED !

MultiSystem is a powerful tool and can perform potentially dangerous and/or destructive operations on your device and data that may affect your life. While it is unlikely to do irreversable damage to your device, it is not impossible, and you should proceed with caution. Loss of data and/or the need to re-flash a full stock (manufacturer-supplied) firmware IMGs (usually requiring a computer) is always a possibility, and is increasingly likely if you do not know what you are doing. It is possible to lose root access when using MultiSystem on locked-bootloader devices running unexpoitable (bu rooted) Android firmware, without careful reading of documentation or following the instructions. Please consult with expert users before performing actions you do not comprehend.

I'm being intentionally vague because you obviously didn't want to show all your cards in this thread yet.
However, I am curious (since I can't post in dev threads... I have to ask here) what the prerequisites are for this. Must one start with a specific software release? Can one enjoy root on a KitKat ROM, or must one be on Lollipop to get root this way? Is kingroot required, or are you jacking the code to install supersu instead of their weird proprietary su? Will it work on the Note Edge as well? So many questions...
Really, my most important question is: Can I finally buy a Note 4/Edge?!?

So, does this mean that firmware updates don't burn the path and plow salt into the fields like they do on the Note 3? That step implies that you can downgrade, unlike my Note 3.

Awesome news. I'm not quite ready to go to LP because I need KK for a few things. It really pains me to watch @hsbadr rip out all this awesome new stuff for my Note 3 while I watch from the sidelines. If I do upgrade to a Note 4, it's nice to know that I'll be able to dabble in LP a little to scratch the itch, and then go back go KK as a daily driver.

FYI there were like 400 clicks and i "earned" less then a dollar... i worked my ass out (even after my phone was already rooted) for making MTK devices rooted and i think a made a good job... i presented the easiest and clearest method which is actually not bricking any devices... i built scripts to exchange ramdisk compression and port TWRPs for every different MTK LGs... i helped people in PMs, Facebook and TeamViewer... the least i deserve is a god damn coffee, don't i???
Not like you would deserve an answer on that comment anyways...

Use the "fastboot boot twrp.img" command to get into twrp. You cant flash it. Read the rooting thread for more info.
I dont really understand what you want to post a tutorial about however i suggest you to read the other related threads i linked in the rooting thread and if you have any new stuff wirth a new thread then of course make it.

You have to port TWRP for yourself: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/development/mtk-portable-twrp-porter-t3536123
then you can try to root depending on your firmware security patch date.

LineageOS 15 on LG K8 - true or false?
@gottlasz , you have great knowledge and experience.
Can you verify the accuracy of the information on the following pages?
LG K8 Lineage OS 15 – Download and installation Guide
The article leads to the lineage-15.0-20170913-Unofficial-MT6735-64-bit.zip file from which I extracted build.prop.
In the build.prop file is information that it is prepared for Tecno Camon C7 - convergence parameters for LG K8.
From the first link you can open the page:
TWRP download for LG K8
on which is the link to TWRP-recovery-for-LG-K8.img.
It is puzzling for me that there are very many devices on this list [LineageOS 15 ROM Devices List – Android Oreo [UPDATED FREQUENTLY] with unofficial LineageOS 15.
What do you think about all this?

I think if its not on xda than its false... anyways it's just one of those sites collecting visitors with popular topics but no real value...
Our k8 is really sensitive. Its not gonna work with a ported rom. Someone with the nowledge should build a rom straight for the k8 but i guess we have to wait for it...

Hey friends!
These are only for the unlocked Surface Duo. I am sorry At&t users.

Cheers
I just rooted the new android 11 update.
The only difference from android 10 is you should now use the newest magisk v23 rather than the older one
I followed this guide exactly except skipped all the magisk workaround stuff and just used the latest version of the magisk app to patch the boot.img

Yup, have a guide being published right now.
Are these for the AT&T version as well. Mine is currently locked if that matters

To be honest with you, I don't know if this will work for At&t, it might but I don't have the at&t model so I cannot verify for you. You can try flashing via adb sideload in recovery and see but non of us are responsible if things don't work lol

Lol yeah I know the drill around these parts. I just did a quick internet search and the update is ONLY for the unlocked models according to what I read. I guess I'll be waiting for the time being

It's late where I am, but tomorrow I may just try it and see if it will work. I'll read some more about it tonight and if I take the dive tomorrow I will report back to let others know.

After a bit of experimentation I managed to get it to work. Although you can't just `add sideload` it since the verification will fail. You'll have to unlock the bootloader and dd some partitions manually. Then once it thinks it's the global variant you can `add sideload`. I made a thread about it https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/turn-at-t-into-a-the-global-variant.4393631/
