I've installed Cyanogenmod onto my LG G3 D855, and a lot of the apps in my Play Store profile have been downloaded and installed to internal storage. Now, as I bought a 128GB MicroSD card, I'd like to make as much use of it as possible! So I'm going through apps and trying to move the ones that I can to SD card. However, each time I press "MOVE TO SD CARD", I get this message: "Couldn't move app. Not enough storage space."
My internal storage has 23.77GB free. My external SD card has 116GB free. Somehow, I think there is enough storage space to move apps that are maybe 50MB or 100MB. I also don't see anything obvious in CatLog about the failure to move the app. So, why am I getting this error? Is it something to do with the face that the LG G3 seems to treat the internal storage as another SD card? Maybe it's trying to move the app from internal SD card -> internal SD card, and getting this error? How can I fix it, and actually move my apps to my external 128GB SD card?

Same here on a totally different device (Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus - G910F) on Android Lollipop, no clue how to solve. Reformatted the card, made new partitions, etc.

I've come looking for an answer too for my GPad. I have enough space both internal and on the SD card but I'm getting updates breaking and can't move stuff to the SD card either.

I have the same issue. Please assist
Had same problem: 32GB card works fine, but 64GB card won't move apps even though there's plenty of room.
Solution: connect the phone to the PC and fill the 64GB card with at least 32GB of data (music, video, whatever...). Now when you try to move the apps, the phone will see less than 32GB free and it will work.
App manager in my HTC Sensation 4G apparently freaks out and chokes when it sees more free space available than it was originally programmed to deal with.

Ok, so here is my question, sorry if it was asked, i used the search and couldn't find something like me.
So whenever I install games, many uses about 200-300MB of space, it will use my USB storage which its coming to a fill very soon, if i keep downloading new games. My question is, how can i make use of my 16GB SD card to install game files. And, I just re-read the GS2 box, and it saids it has 16BGB-32GB, is there a way i can upgrade the internal USB Storage, or what exactly did that mean?
The 16-32 Gbs are like iPhones they come with 16orll or 32 gbs units. Have you tried pushing the data from tthe gamed to the sdcard?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I know i can copy it from USB to SD, or move, but i know that wont do what i want to do. Since it will be move, whenever i load the game and looks for the files, it wont look in the SD card, but the USB storage.
I thought the GS2 only came as a 16GB model. It will accept up to a 32GB microSD card and Android seems to be pretty intelligent about being able to find stuff on the external SD card if it's not in USB storage (internal). It finds my ringtones and images on my external SD card without me having to do anything.
If the apps/games you're using aren't enabled for being moved to the SD card (Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/On SD Card) then you'll have to find some other way to make space, perhaps moving your images to the external SD and configuring the camera app to store images there, or uninstalling apps.
it can actually use larger than 64 GB microSD see my HowTo guide
I'm curious as well because some titles like Asphalt 6 and GTA 3 download much more data than the .apk was to download.
For instance GTA3 from the market is 12.93MB, and if you move to external SD Card, you're moving only 13MB, but the game data to download is around 450MB and where's that stored? I have an external 32 and I'd rather prefer to store everything on that primarily.
I was so seeing the same thing. I have 32gb SD card and I would to find a workaround for this silly issue. Any input would be awesome!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
On a regular linux system, it would be a simple matter of finding the folder where the data files were stored, copying them to a new drive and then configure /etc/fstab to mount the new drive on top of the data file folder.
not sure if this is possible with Android and would require root if it were possible.

tried app2sd?
sorry for the delay respond to all.I was away from a computer for awhile. So, i see all this talk, and it has helped me understand a bit more. I actually decided to delete some already beaten games to make space.
In regards to the pics and music, they have always been in my SD card. But i will download app2sd and see if it works. The actual app itself does not bother me. Most of the time, they are very little. Is the download after what does bother me. Most games need from 300mb to nearly 1Gb of space. Now thats a lot, when a phone comes only wiht 11.5GB of 16GB and we know why that happens.

app2sd is not going to help you, if you already have the stuff installed to SD card
those cheesy App2SD apps only shows you which Apps can be moved to SD
you need Link2SD the real deal, the one that actually convert stuff over to the hidden partition in your SD card to use as Internal memory, which you are short on

I already tried Titanium Backup and still doesn't work. If I try going into settings and click 'Move to SD Card" it moves it into the internal storage. Its acting like the internal storage is the sd card. I posted few screen shots in to what I'm trying to say. When I plug my phone into my pc, it does show up my internal storage and my external sd card separate.

Well that's the same for most phones. I have the main memory in my phone. Then the internal sd card, along with external, there's no way to choose where is there? Couldn't you just use root browser go into system apps and move the apk to your SD card? I've done that before, worked good for me. Or use clean master and move it. I've done all of the above across almost every manufacture. I've worked with sisters LG's my HTC, dads samsung, friends moto, and all those methods have worked perfect I will see if I can find anything tomorrow, lol gotta be up in like 5 hours xD

Im pretty sure you cant move apps to sd card anymore cause google changed a whole bunch of things with kit kat and they want you to use cloud storage. If you were rooted there are apps that you can use to do that. I have 128gb card with all my apps and data on cause im rooted and use a app called folder mount.. you can search around but im pretty sure im right.

I still think that with kit kat they changed permissions but here are my opinions. Maybe SD card is corrupted . Does the SD card work on anything else? Maybe try to reformat it. Did you buy on internet? It could be fake. I had bought a original SanDisk on ebay but it was a bootleg one and it worked fine for a while then I kinda had same problem as you are having. After getting one from best buy no problem since.

There are many different things that you can try to do in order to reduce wasted space, but the limitations are great, especially after 4.0.4. Most, if not all, Android phones are not allowed to move apps to an external SD card, or in some cases, even the internal SD storage that may be partitioned off for user storage (separate from phone storage usage used by the system and apps). This is a major issue on phones that have a small amount of internal storage space, such as 4 or even 8GB. There is a way to enable the movement of apps to the SD card, but the phone must be rooted, the SD card must have two primary partitions, and apps like Apps2SD III or Links2SD should be used (unless you are comfortable i
The Move to SD in the app manager is actually still moving to a sectioned off portion of space within your internal memory.
It sounds like this might not be properly mounted.
Hello,
Im experiencing really weird problem that never happened to me and now Im trying to find a solution but I cant find anything and I dont really want to format my phone because it would solve this problem only for some time.
The problem Im experiencing is regarding to my storage / sd card.. when I install any app it will make folder on my phone storage and not on SD Card even tho I selected to install apps on my SD Card. Another problem is that when I try to move that file that is placed in my phone storage to my SD Card then it wont clear any space from phone storage but the file is gone - and then when I run the app it says that I need to download additional datas and when I press download data it just say that my storage is full and I got 45gb free SD card and almost full phone memory even when I moved 1,5GB file to sd card .. I really dont know what to do..
Im also adding screenshot of my used space where you can clearly see that my apps on phone memory got 4GB and other files got around few hundred mbs but my free space is ONLY 500 MB and graph showing I should have around 6GB of free space..
Thanks for any help
EDIT: Im not rooted and running latest stock ROM
What app are you trying to delete the files in? Doesn't it have trash or something?
It doesnt matter what application Im trying to move (Im not uninstalling them or deleting) its happening to every app.
Anyone please?
i got this concern too. i want to install large games with obb files, but even if i transfer manually the obb files to ext sd/android/obb folder the game always says "download additional files" . in short the game can't find or locate the obb file due to some limitation on ext card permissions to read and write. im not sure on other devices. but i do believe thats how default android system is. :crying:
Correct me if im wrong but i guess the only solution here is to root our zf2 and install folder mount . forgive me for my first post. newbie here

well.. first of all u must know this fact that there are only few apps are present which can install on sd cards.. 90% of apps are developed to install on internal storage, if u will move them to sd card, they will not run.. and copying appdata files directly frm file explorer never solves this problem.. it will eat ur double space only.. there is specific way of doing this.. but only for those which supports installlation on sd card.
now ur problem of space, just clean ur junkfiles.. use xplore file explorer, enable 'show hidden files' and check one by one that which folder and file is eating ur storage.
if it doesnt work.. only last option is hard reset from stock recovery.
What is the main difference between internal storage and sd card? I dont get it why it shouldnt also work from the sd card.. and I was told by others that if I root my phone and download specific app / change settings I will be able to install to my sd card too. I was also normally installing my stuff on sd card when I had previous phone with 4.2 Android. With all these things I really shouldnt buy 128gb card that cost me 40€ because there is 95% of free space and I cant move anything (applications) to it.

yeah.. during 4.4 time.. apps were sd card freindly, but nowdays its rare.. bcoz every app developer is in race of superiority.. internal sd gives better r/w speed, and its not removable so that app can run 24/7 on your device.. dats y they make apps to install on sd.
dont get dissappointed.. your problem is solved in andoid 6.0 marshmellow, it gives u option of using external sd card as phone's internal storage. as soon as u insert the sd card.. it will ask you that how to use it.. as a portable storage or as a internal storage..
So plz go get buy 128 gb ssd.

Oh thats great that Android 6 will make my sd card work again. But now there is that issue that Asus is working so slowly on Android 6 :<
is there a "trash" folder? every time i delete things, they disappear, but the space doesnt free up. i also have the same problem as the original poster: my apps and all files only take up about 6.5 Gb, but my free space is only 800Mb out of 11.5Gb...i downloaded "diskusage" and it shows 4.9Gb of "system files" but i cant find them using my file manager or storage screen (this is in addition to the 4.6 Gb of "system reserved" space)
I tried to show hidden files and found a ".trash" folder, but there isnt anything in it
use ES file explorer , it has a feature to find all junk. Also ZF2 is not deleting files from gallery , it stores them in .trash. Check that too.
Might as well create a thread of people who are using their SD Cards as Adaptive Storage instead of External "removable" storage.
I recently bought a 128GB Lexar Pro 1000x *UHS-II and used it as Adaptive Storage. So far so good but during the formating of the card it was stucked on 40% but rebooted the phone and voila after reboots it became adaptive storage and migrated all my data.
I have another curious question, when the SD Card is used as Adaptive Storage, is the SDCard is the primary install location of all apps? What happens when the internal storage is full, will it just continue doing its stuff occupying the big space from external SD?
Looking forward to an enjoyable discussion.

Been using this on my One M8 and now HTC 10 so I had some experience.
First off when you first run the Adaptive storage say yes to move app etc, this will help when you connect Phone to a PC so you can see the Full SD card for putting music on etc
App now install on both Internal or SD card depends on the app tbh I found most games will go right onto the SDcard, the great thing now though you can move each app when ever you want.

No NO it will finish eventually. Id say reformat as portable again then reformat as internal.
Cool. I just switched from a slower 128GB card to a 64GB Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-I U3 card so that I could switch to adaptive storage. No freezing, etc, when formatting. It just worked. I was originally running it the 128GB card without adaptive storage enabled..
The only "hitch" that I encountered was that HTC Messages app kept saying "Space is unavailable" every time I opened a picture message, or tried to save the image. These were ones that I received after I switched to adaptive storage. I cleared the cache, and that didn't help, at least at first, but then it started working as expected after some fooling around. It's worth mentioning that Google Messenger wasn't affected, it was only HTC Messages..
Other than that, so far so good. I'm not rooted (yet), and haven't read to far into that error, although there are a few users experiencing that with the HTC messages program. Will report back if I notice anything odd.

Last night I wanted to try Viper10 Rom, on my stock rooted rom I was using the adoptive storage feature, the second I wiped(NOT format) data the SD card was ruined.
Its required to full wipe when changing roms with totally different bases, so adoptive storage seems like you can no longer flash custom roms? :/
My Sandisk 64GB card thinks its 16GB and it won't even work, it formats in windows 10, won't read in Android anymore, says its "unsupported and 0MB" but it thinks its 16gb, and once you try to move anything to it Windows no longer reads the card and corrupts.
I don't know if adoptive storage is the exact cause or if my card happen to die while in TWRP so beware, does anyone else have feedback on this? what's your experience with flashing roms and having adoptive storage?
It sucks!! but eh I guess getting a Samsung 64GB Pro+ is better then a regular Sandisk(not extreme).

Oh man, yes anyone using adaptable storage and formats/wipes is going to erase their card.
The SD card issues you see are normal and should be fixable. Try this tool (it's free) http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-format-your-SD-card-back-to-the-original-si/

Wiping data doesn't wipe internal storage, and it doesn't wipe portable SD either, so why does adoptive storage SD mode get corrupted on data wipe? What's the way around it? never use adoptive storage again unless you plan on staying with stock or one rom?

Personally even at 32gb I don't see a need for adoptable storage.
I keep my media on a 64gb card and don't use the internal storage except for pics and misc things. This way I can flash updates and things from recovery, directly off the SD.

I keep my media on a 64gb card and don't use the internal storage except for pics and misc things. This way I can flash updates and things from recovery, directly off the SD.

OK, thanks for your opinion I guess you are right! what's the point right? I have all GTA's and many games and apps and it still said over 9GB left from what I remember, then boom! SD for everything else.
Thank you, I mean this adoptive storage thing had been a nightmare so far anyways!

My card is portable now, is there no way to move any apps at all to SD card? this is kind of ridiculous.

In the old days we used Apps on SD because of storage space etc. Do you really need apps on the SD when installed normally they're still on the internal storage and not the system folder.

I suppose it will be fine, I have 9GB left now but after all this crap I RUU'd my phone to fix everything because my phone wouldn't stop boot looping after around 3 minutes after this SD corruption.
I have all the apps I usually have installed, but almost all these games never been run after the loss, so no data yet for these games, hopefully after a couple months of use, saved game data and such only make it where it says 8GB left or more, if not, I am sure it will be alright.
NOTE: I already moved photos, videos, music, Game ROMs(SNES N64, PS1) to SD Card leaving 9GB left.
I'm sure it will all be fine, thank you for helping me make this decision today!, I also noticed in Download/Fastboot Mode that the SD card is properly detected, no more "SD Card Not Mounted" Firmware updates will be easier, no more PC use! :good:
It's not ruined @Viper4713 It's just partitioned incorrectly.
You can only have a single partition on the SD card. Yours now has a 16GB partition instead of a 64GB partition.
You can use this tool to "recover the lost space". There's manual ways as well but this works just fine.

Remember that your SD card reader needs to support SDXC cards.
If you use this with a reader that only supports SDHC cards, you'll end up with a 32GB partition.

Thanks! @datafoo already gave me a tool to fix it, thanks again :good: I also learned not to use Adoptive storage if you're a custom Rom switcher! lol

I agree. If you are a fan of switching ROMs I dont suggest Adaptive Storage.

Adaptive storage is a meh feature for phones with 32GBs or more on-board. I think it was designed for the low budget Android phones with 8GBs or less that practically can't fit anything on their phone without assistance. There's plenty of cheap phones that come with sd card slots and this feature benefits them greatly.

I agree now, I just thought it was nice to use until it became a horrible mistake, also nice to see a fellow Texas user, go Rangers!, Cowboys, Mavericks! lol
what about apps that don't let you select storage area ?

I will heed your advice, but what to do about apps which will potentially use up a lot of storage space such as music apps ? Spotify is well behaved and lets me specify the SD card for its offline cache, but Soundcloud Go doesn't. Is there a way to either create a symlink or run just that one app off the SD card without using adoptable storage ?
