No Signal - Airplane mode turning off... - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm new here.
My M8 isn't receiving signal, everything else works fine, I checked the sim card in another phone and it works.
I did notice that airplane mode is stuck tuning off. Any ideas how I can fix this?
I rooted the phone (very new to rooting) but didn't go so far as to flash a mod. I unrooted the phone back to stock. It was fine for a couple of weeks, then one day randomly lost signal.
I've tried factory resetting but no luck.
Thanks

Can you try manually selecting the network in settings? Is your sim card and phone compatible?

When I go to search network operators it says no networks found, the sim came with the phone and worked fine for months until now. The SIM works in another phone just fine. Maybe it can't find network because airplane mode is stuck turning off...

No network issue after repair

Hi there,
I recently sent my phone back to HTC because my volume button was stuck, which resulted in it not being able to boot (as it always went straight to recovery). They repaired it, and after three weeks without my phone I know received it back. They 'replaced parts and did a software update.'
Problem is, now I have no mobile network connection. The phone recognises the SIM fine, but no signal and search networks results in "Error while searching for networks."
I'm blaming the software update HTC did, so I send them another email. The thing is, I don't want to send it back AGAIN, I had the phone a full 2 weeks before it broke and haven't been able to use it since. Is there anything you guys can think of that doesn't involve rooting it and losing my warranty (which I will probably need now)?
Thanks a bunch
Hello,
have you tried to switch between the network mode; only WCDMA or only GSM? (Settings->Mobile Network->Network Mode)

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have, no effect. One other weird thing I have noticed since first posting: at the about -> Phone Identity screen, the phone number does not match my actual sim phone number. It reads the SIM fine though, as all my SIM contacts are available.
Could you use/try another SIM Card to check its work with a different one?
Is WiFi working? Any interruptions druing a regular call?

Regular call is impossible, as I have no cellular network at all. Wifi works fine. I am currently unable to try another SIM, as I'd have to cut a microsim out of a regular one and people around don't want to have their card cut up.
The sim works fine in my old nokia though, so I don't think that's the issue.
I'll try to find a friend with an iPhone 4 to try their microsim, but I'm not really counting on it.

[Q] phone turn off when sim inserted

Hi. i have unlocked Sony Xperia Ion LT28at.Was using it for couple of months but recently phone start shutting off, first battery lower than 30% but now even with 100%. Found out that it only when tmobile card is inserted. Tried my wife's card ,the same. without card phone still works and also when I inserted att card .I also just did factory reset Like I said phone worked perfect until like a week ago.
I just make factory reset and tried to play with the phone with different sims i collected over years. It works perfectly with Orange, Play,Cingular,ATT sims, but when I put old prepaid tmobile, it is shutting off again.

Old sim's do that. They short circuit your phone, because they are old. Don't use it, or change it with a new one.

It may be so, but the same sim card work without the problem in another phones and the 12 year old cingular card does does not cause the problem, only tmobile cards. My daughter card is like a year old and it is causing shut down also.

Call tmobile and let them know about the sim problem.
Someone says that it is a "safety" measure built in the system.
I'm not sure about that though.
Ok right now I reflashed the phone with current firmware, there is no programs installed. tried old sim cards from Orange, cingular, ATT and one more company I think Play, all works with the phone no shutting down. Then I tried my old prepaid Tmobile then my daughter's and my wife's tmobile cards all of them are shutting it down within a minute. I am using replacement unlocked samsung and have no problem with my sim card , same my wife's tmobile samsung and my daughther HTC oneS. Have only problem when I want to pair sony ion with any tmobile sim.
Try to disable the PIN CODE just for a few minutes. See what that goes.

Don't know exactly what a pin code is, but just re-flashed the phone to LT28i, did not helped. phone still shutting off.
I had the same problem too. This worked for me:
1.Open your phone without sim
2a(Ice cream Sandwich):Then Go to the settings->more->mobile networks->Network mode or 2b(Gingerbread) Settings>Wireless and networks>Mobile networks>Network Mode
3:And change network mode to WCDMA only(this worked for me).
4:Insert your Sim and restart your phone
If "WCDMA only" doesn't work you can try "GSM" only.
Old thread but I hope someone else gets helped by this.

I'm not sure at 100% that it ll work for u but i personaly tested it and worked fine
so you just have to activate the pin code on security and location setting
but the SIM card must be inserted to activate the pin code
If you never activated the pin code, then the default code must be 0000
if the phone turn off before u get acces to the setting menu so u have to
- boot without the sim
- turn on flight mode
- power off and insert the sim card
- boot with sim
- after this follow the above instructions
- reboot and after u enter the pin code turn off flight mode and see if the phone shutdown or not
- if it shutdown try to go back on setting and set mobile network to use gsm only
if u don't understand reply !
I hope it work for u
Is there any solution to this problems? Previous suggestion is not work..
- When insert sim card, the phone will shut down when try to search the network.
- The phone will not shut down if switch on without sim card
- But if the phone was connect to the charger, it can switch on with the sim card.
I don't think the battery is bad...

I just realize that, the problem is went want to search th 2G (GSM network). My area did not have 3G (the phone have poor 3G reception). So, the phone need to be in 2G mode, so it keep going shut down.
The problem is simple. The battery contacts need to be cleaned. Use a cotton swab, damp it with rubbing alcohol and clean the battery contact on both the battery and of the phone. The rubbing alcohol is safe for the metal contacts. Install the battery back and turn the phone on. This took care of in my case. Avoid touching these contacts as they're sensitive.
Amazing workaround!

Amazing! This is a great workaround. The reason is actually batteries getting faulty. I moved to 110V country from 220V and used a voltage transformer in front of adapter to charge the phone. It did something bad with the batteries. Though phone works fine when on charging- no shut down. It shuts down only when I try to place a call. Also I now charge it via laptop usb and disabled the fast charging and I think that also made batteries a bit better as phone is not switching off that frequently as it used to be. So also see how u are charging the batteries

[Q] HELP!!! My HTC Desire 816 a5_chl on VM is stuck turning off airplane mode

So, recently I was given this device after a friend had followed a few guides on here to try and attempt a sim unlocking for T-Mo. However, they gave up before they could fail too hard. However, once I had recieved the device, I had to order a new sim from VM myself, so that I can use the device. Upon receiving the sim, I noticed that the phone DID NOT AND WOULD NOT detect that a sim had been inserted. I grew worried and decided to run a .exe RUU flash back to stock. When the phone comes back, it doesn't ask for a sim at all. Instead, the setting for Airplane mode is greyed out and says "turning off." I have left the device sitting there for hours, just waiting for it to return to life, but to no avail. What should I do?!?!
Have you tried calling VM and activating the device?
I'm pretty sure the sim is just for LTE connectivity, and that the phone is still CDMA and requires an activation.

That's the very first thing I tried, and to no avail. The main problem lies in the fact that the radios are off. It tried to do self activation multiple times and it panics and fails. Later, I will upload screenies and a video of the issue to clarify the best I can
Try with this secret code that allow you to turn the radio on.

Try it with and without turning airplanes off and also before or after..... Hope it helps.

As stated already , the signal could be weak in your area. Type in the dialer key pad ##3282# and you can also look to make sure all the bands are enabled on your device. I don't see why they wouldn't be though. A handful of users have stated bad connectivity with the M9, but that's on the sprint network I have been reading about.
at ##3282# it say only OK.. nothing about enable bands and i tryed sim of my friend (vodafone 4g) he have m8 and 4g working... on my m9 doesnt..

I have same problem with my M9+. In Manchester Area UK
I had perfect 4G with my old M8 but with new phone only 3G!!
Let me know if you get any answers. HTC and Vodafone couldnt help me either.
Check access point names, make sure only one is listed and selected.
Go to networks and search for network, click automatic.
Open the connectivity selection and make sure that the scalable option is chosen (2g/3g/4g)
Are you using one Base with the wrong firmware? Make sure they match up.
Find a friend on the same network or shared network and see if they have 4g in your location.
Test the sim in another phone.
Call network to check for issues in your area and or if there is an error against your account, may need a new sim if that one is old.
Test in major parts of the city center next time you're shopping..
Perform a speed test to see what speed you're actually getting, hspa is up to 20mb, 4g AFAIK is around 60mb, I've had 48 before. Anything over 20 could be considered 4g, you will very very rarely see a 3G tariff go over 19mb, which is the most I've ever seen.
Good luck.

I have the same issue with the M9. Couldn't find an answer for this problem. Even tried opening lte bands as listed here but no luck.
The thing is that I used to get LTE where I am now, went on long holiday and can't get it to work again so no idea what's up.

I tried my sim with my wife's iphone and i got 4g without any problem. It's not a sim issue. Whatever the problem is, it's with the device (hardware, software, settings). I remember it also took me a few weeks after getting the M9 to get a 4g signal, but then one day it just appeared so there's that to add to the mystery.

Reset your network settings mate, set to manual then back to automatic.
Make sure you actually catch the network on manual first before manual. You will find it, it's just a case of going through the motions.
Also click menu, reset to defaults in access point names.

1. How do you "reset network settings"?
2. set to manual - you mean in 'Network operators' menu select 'Search networks', select my network, then go back and selecting 'Select automatically'?
3. What do you mean "just a case of going through the motions"?
4. Should I reset APN at the last step or at the beginning?
I'm trying to understand your steps as clearly as i possible can because this no 4g issue took a lot of time and effort from me and it still doesn't work. Any help is very much appreciated.

I am trying to help you.
There are no steps it's just a case of trying everything to do with the network. If what you say is true and you've literally just had this issue occur out of the blue then it has to be a difference on the handset, especially seeing as you have tested the sim in another phone and it works.
Reset to default is with apn, doesn't matter when you do this just reset them, make sure it's checked and cycle mobile data on and off.
Clarify that your device is set to 2g/3g/4g within network mode (I believe it's called)
And I was referring to setting network selection to manual within mobile network settings, then choosing your network, then researching and selecting automatic.
The path is: settings / mobile data / network operators / search networks, wait for yours and select it, cycle mobile data (turn off then back on) if that doesn't work, switch back to automatic.
Reboot your phone after making changes, perform the full shut down method instead of the restart or power off methods, it's power and volume up AFAIK, hold for 10+ seconds, might be 15.
Going through the motions refers to checking anything and everything which influences the network, one of these setting will get it working..
Might be seen as overkill but a factory reset (if it's not been tried already) good luck.

I know you are trying to help me, and I very much appreciate it. Truly am.
I tried doing all the steps you listed, but no luck. Even tried at some point to force lte only in 4636 screen but that resulted in no signal at all. Trying to manually select a network in that setting only gives me the other 2 networks that work in the area but not vodafone which is what I use.
As a complete overkill I RUU earlier to the new 2.11.617 firmware without signing into my google account or restoring anything, and still no lte. What I did saw however, in the select network screen, was that next to my network, it said 2g/3g and next to the other 2 networks here it said 2g/3g/4g. Obliviously I can't select them as it's a vodafone simcard.
I added here SS from LTE discovery app while i was on 'lte only' mode. You can see signal is there but it cannot connect.
Any wild ideas or suggestions? I'm opened to try almost anything
Just out of interest, have you tried a different sim card? I know you said that your sim worked in another phone but I'd still be tempted to contact voda to get a new sim and to see if everything is set up on a network level, you may have to tell via that the issue is persistent in different phones or they may make you pay for it.
Also, might be something to do with the association between your phone and your sim. I once had a sim that blocked my missus, she could call me but I couldn't call her, no active diverts of any kind, I could call anyone and they could call me, got a new sim and it was sorted. Very strange, but anomalies like this do occur.
Have you got any mods or are you at stock at the moment? I know you said ruu. Oh and lol click thanks BTW.

Well the thing is that my wife's sim card in my phone only gets 3g. On her iPhone it's 4g. My sim card in my wife's iPhone gets 4g. On my phone only 3g so it seems like a very specific problem with my device.
Shortly after ruu I installed viper 3.5 without any mods..
Can it be that my device is somehow blocked by the network towers or something of that nature?
Maybe a hidden setting somewhere that blocking the phone's 4g capabilities? This is getting ridiculous..

No worries fella
If you've already tried another sim and it's still not happening, the firmware matches the rom, your sim works in other phones with 4g. Then I'm really not sure mate..
Give Lee droid a whirl that's what I'm using at the moment.. A simple but great rom..
I'm pretty much out of ideas now, if all of the above has been checked then it's something that I'm not aware of.. Sorry mate..
for the record it is a weird one, something should have got it working by now..

Calls not working

Just got a Moto Z Play and as part of it I'm switching to T-Mobile.
Got the phone a few days before the SIM card, so I put TWRP on, rooted it and put the 7.1.1 LineageOS rom on.
Thought everything was working fine. Internet works, everything seems stable. However, I can't make calls. Or rather I can make one call after a reboot and then nothing. The SIM info shows cellular network disconnected. Tried two sims.
Any ideas?

I haven't contacted them yet. Oddly though internet works fine. So I think the SIM is good.
I did find that if I turn enhanced LTE off that calls work. So it seems like voLTE is what's broken. Possibly from the ROM.

I believe you're correct in assuming volte is broken in LOS, there on going discussions and yes you'll need to reboot after every call.
I would assume this goes for all custom ROMs (3 lol) for our MZP, as everyone has used alberto97 git to build from.
