I recently got my Galaxy tab S 8.4 LTE with Exynos. However I have some questions. Sometimes i felt a little bit laggy. Is it normal? Also when I use CPU-Z i only see 4 cores instead of 8. -I am sure it is exynos version- Should not this device run all the cores simultaneously?
And i also would like to ask if there is a way to increase the devices overall performance.

Touchwiz can be a little laggy. You can root your device and freeze or delete a lot of the bloatware. Mines very snappy. Don't experience any lag. I'm still running stock Touchwiz, I just froze all of the bloat which keeps it from starting or running in the background. Also you can flash a custom rom. There's some really good ones available at the moment. Blisspop makes a excellent rom. It would completely get rid of Touchwiz all together.
Exynos is a octacore. However in this tablet it only runs 4 cores at a time. The 1.3 ghz quad core processor runs when your not doing intensive things. So let's say like, browsing the web or watching youtube, checking your mail, etc etc. It uses those to save battery life. Now when more intensive tasks are going on it switches to the 1.9 ghz quad core processor. It's not a true octacore as it only runs 4 cores at a time. However I believe it was the note 3 that had this same processor and there was something called HMP. It allowed the processors to run all 8 cores at once. But us galaxy tab owners do not have that. I don't know if that's something that can be released for this tablet from Samsung. But as of now the device runs on 4 cores at a time and switches back and forth depending on the tasks that are being done.

I must say that despite using the fancy shmancy octo-core battery saving wizardry, my Tab S falls flat on its face with regards to battery savings. In can probably play HD video for 10 hours straight on a full charge, but I don't know if the device could do 5 hours of web browsing if you visit truly bloated modern web sites, like the kinja blogs. I personally suspect that video and other multimedia are run in power saving mode on the slower cores, but web browsing probably calls for the faster cores in many cases. I am thinking it would be cool of there was a way to force everything to run on the slower cores all the time. When I am out in a library or coffee shop without a charging cable, I would have accepted a slower performance in exchange for a long battery life.
Understood. However i am not sure if things go like that. I mean I open CPU-Z and monitor cpu usage. It is not even stable it goes up to 1600 mhz sometimes even though i just monitor it. I wonder if there is a way to monitor my CPU usage with a background APP so i can see if it is overloaded even with simple tasks such as facebook.

If you're rooted you can use an app such as setcpu to modify cpu settings.
If all it does is switch between 2 quad core chips that has to be the dumbest thing I've heard of. What's the point if it can just step the fast one down in frequency and voltage?

As we all have known, the HOX comes with a Tegra3 Quad-Core CPU 1,5Ghz
But in some HTC One X Catalog provided by HTC, they say that the HOX has one more core to manage the performance and power to increase the battery life of the device
Can anyone confirm this info? It is really confusing
Yes. The phone has a 1.5 GHz quad core processor. It also has a single companion core which it offloads to for low power. Usually when deep sleeping

Yes, the hox has 5 cores. The last one is a low power core. It is running only when performance is not needed and when the other cores are disable. His goal is saving power.

As people stated here, yes, it has 5 cores. 4 full power cores for harder processes. This is why it's called quad-core. But there's another, "small" one, which is called the Ninja core. It's active when there are no CPU extensive tasks, it eats less battery (smaller consumption) than the "big" ones.
Sounds really nice, although I'm unsure how useful it is. I found different opinions on it. Obviously Nvidia says it's a really cool thing to have, but other people state it's useless, since it's almost always off, others say it's making the things worse, since sometimes it tries to perform tasks, but it's too weak, so the things are slower with it than without it. But as I sad, I don't know, these are just opinions.
FYI the core swithing thingly is hardware control rather than software, less prone to programming mistakes..

I think the ninja core is what accounts for the INSANE standby time HOX can have.

Yeah I think it's quite useful when the HOX is in standby mode or opening small applications. If there are some how the developers can active this core as well as the other 4 in gaming than the game will be a little bit more smoother. Am I right?

We've got two clusters in the Tegra 3 SoC.
One is the "G" Cluster, containing 4 cores, and the other one is the "LP" Cluster, containing one core, called "Companion Core" (or also, someone likes calling it "Ninja Core", fugly and inappropriate IMHO).
The cluster switching is not made by hardware, but by software.... if you don't believe that, go watch into the kernel source
...oh and...yeah, nVidia calls it "4-PLUS-1 architecture".

By practically the same, do you mean the companion* core is underclocked or undervolted (software lock)by nvidia?
If thats the case, its similar to how ATI & Nvidia used to reduce the the performance or even pipelines of their gfx cards via software and we could just flash another fw and unlock it.

ok guys I downloaded cpu spy and after using the phone for 10min my phone never hit above 1.5 ghz ... I thought this phone was at 1.9 ,I did a lot of testing and still couldn't get the phone past 1.5 , no wonder things are not as smooth as they should be. I also upgraded to the new firmware it is a bit faster but I see the phone cpu is always around 1.5-1.1 ghz not good to run as smooth , also if cpu the low I'm sure gpu as low why all the animations run slow.
Edit : was playing angry birds star wars check back cpu ran at 1.1ghz -950mhz ...
Edit2: so i ran a anTuTu test and finally it hit at 1.9ghz and it drop down to 1.6ghz and 1.7 ghz for a few seconds. I really feel if this phone ran past the 1.5 it be a lottttt smoother i mean a lot.. just my 2cents trying to help out.

CPU factors
Listed CPU speeds are a maximum, a lot of factors play into that actually CPU speed you will see when running various apps.
Also, the CPU monitor reporting may not be 100% accurate, again due to several factors.
Also for reasons spread around this forum (all the battery threads popping up after the 1st week with the devices in hand)
The default cpu speed governors are likely set to preserve battery and only kick into high gear when the need REALLY presents itself.
Ie to samsung a little stuttering is fine if it means the battery lasts an extra hour in most cases
Most custom roms have different cpu governors in place - designed in part to respond more quickly to system load and increase performance.
Hello everyone! I am very, very happy because i bought a Nexus 7 2013 a week ago. That same night I got home from the shop I knew it was getting root permissions. So i did the rooting method with WugFreshes toolkit and it worked like a dream I must admit. TWRP and Superuser installed in a flash.
After root permissions the fun started - Custom Rom's, Mods, Tweaks you name it. I am currently using Stock Kitkat 4.4 ROM with many tweaks:
PureGraphic HD
PurePeformances
AwesomeBeats
PureAudio
I have the Franco Kernel and it's great. I have had no issues what so ever so far. It's smooth, fast and responsive. Games run extraordinary fast, I can amp up the graphics without to much frame drops, this includes games like GTA SA, GTA VC, Modern Combat 4 and N64/PS1 Emulators (and yes i own the roms :highfive. Back to the Kernel. All Wireless adapters are working (bluetooth, wifi, nfc etc), and wifi seems faster. Battery doesn't drain very fast at all, even with intensive load. But here is where my question actually is ...
I do understand that this question has been answered somewhere else in the Nexus 7 2013 forum, however can someone tell me my question in more detail? Thanks. :good:
Q. My question is, between what cpu temperatures is safe for my nexus 7 2013 to play intensive games at (etc emualtors, gta series, MC4)? What temperatures should i be alerted at. I am currently running GTA Sandreas and emulators at around 50-65 Degrese celcius (yes that's right celcius us auzzies use the metric system :silly: . )
Also if i overclocked it to 1.7GHZ then what would a stable temp be while idling and heavy load? (thanks!)
(last minute edit... Also what CPU is really used in this? People say it's an undercloked s4 pro or something? So if overcloked back to 1.7GHZ it'll be fine? Right?...)

Btw, my cpu hit 91º C this morning while I was playing nova 3 and I was using an overlay to see my gpu frequencies and usage. I think is too much.

I personally wouldn't worry about cpu temp that much. All the developers of custom kernels will set the thermal limits to whatever they think is appropriate. A much bigger concern than the cpu temp is heat being conducted to the battery. I would make a point of keeping the battery below 120F and I personally don't want to see over 110F (around 45C).

The overlay thing I was talking about earlier was the cause for that cpu temp, it used like 2 entire cores to function, without it, temps are more stable, can you believe that the tablet actually kinda burned my fingers if I pressed too hard? That's insane.
Now, I understand that the battery's temperature is something important, so you don't ruin your battery lifespan, but how come cpu temps don't matter as much as battery's does? What's the max temp for these devices?

I'm going to "guess" and say somewhere around 100C for the cpu. Just a guess. 60C for the battery would absolutely be bad news. 50C would make me nervous. Also the cpu will start to get throttled (underclocked) once it gets up to a certain temp, And once it reaches the max temp the cpu will get shut down and you will have to wait for it to cool down before it will boot back up. I would worry about the heat affecting the motherboard and the components on that before I would worry about heat damaging the cpu.

Theorically speaking, the safe working temperatures would be the where the thermal limit is which is around 105ºC.
However, it doesn't work like this because heat spreads to other components and more importantly, it spreads to the battery and we all know batteries don't like hot temperatures since it drastically reduces their life span and charge capability.
On practice, I would say keeping your CPU below 70ºC which will result in a colder battery aswell is the sweet spot.
On the Overclock matter, I have mine at 1900'ish Mhz and my GPU is at 490'ish Mhz and I haven't experienced any abnormal temperatures while runing benchmarks. Infact, the temps were kept below 50ºC which is more than fine.

I think the battery burns like hell when you're playing and charging it at the same time, am I right? I wonder, if the cpu and gpu are underload, the battery will drain quickly, does this mean that this produces more heat to the battery? How does that work.

Like many people here and a few reviews have pointed out the nexus 5X seems to get overwhelmed by some day to day task and multitasking. So today as my phone was struggling to load a web page in chrome and stream some Sirius xm over Bluetooth I decided to try and see how heavy the load on the CPU. I fired up cpu z and according to the app it was under a heavy load and the 4 A53 cores were maxed out at 1.44ghz and the 2 A57 cores were stopped! So I rebooted figuring it must have been a bug and nope the A57 cores where still stopped. Anyone else noticing this or is it just my device?
Not seeing that behavior, although it's possible cpu-z needs an update or is buggy; after launching the camera to generate some load, it showed all 6 cores as being [email protected] until I restarted it.

the snapdragon 808 uses the bigLittle architecture.
That means there are 4 low powered cpus, and 2 high powered cpus.
Most of the time, only the 4 low powered cpus are in use.
When the phone needs more performance/power, the 2 other high powered cpus kick in.
So what you are seeing is normal. Most of the time, the phone is only using the 4 little cpus.

I don't think cpu-z should show all six cores as A53s though, only the little 4. That's the part I think might be a bug.

trickster mod works, I see the 2 big cpus kick in all the time, but it requires root.
So after trying a bunch of different things out looks like running a benchmark will someone's get all the course up and running but not all the time the first screen shot is with 4 cores and the 2nd is with all 6 both seem pretty low to me
Tomorow I am going to sell my Asus Rog5, so now I want to buy RM6 Pro ...So question is simple are you happy with you phone?

Hello, I know am late on this but do not sell your ROG.. RM6 have lots of software issues. the most am suffering with is they limit it from using full performance! I can't see it using 840mhz on GPU for genshin or ANY game! my friend have ROG 5 and I can see his GPU on SD888 can use full performance. Nubia's software is really not good! I regret buying it.

While I agree with RM6's software issues, I'm not so sure about your statements on their GPU performance. I own a standard ROG Phone 5 and I can confirm that GPU speed runs at max speed for the first 5 minutes of playing Genshin, but quickly slows down as the device heats up. This is even with AeroActive Cooler 5 mounted and set to max fan speed. So it's important to also determine and compare sustained GPU performance, which I believe RM6 wins here.
Phone build is good. Spec and features are good but very lacking in the software department. Bugs and errors in lots of parts of the phone. Physically feels good but software feels bad. Runs games well

I never.. like never seen the GPU runs at 840mhz, only in antutu. for genshin I see it goes up to 600mhz something when I run the game while the phone is cool, then it drops right away to 540mhz. and keeps like that or lower. and no matter how much I cool it, it never goes above that. I used their new cooler.. and I put the device in front of AC that it got so cold. yet still never gone above 540mhz.. even the CPU stuck at 2.4.. how is this not an issue? My GPU reaching at max frequency probably happened while I was sitting in the start screen or looking straight at the wall but now that I think about it it didn't really maintain for 5 minutes. The Adreno 660 is very power hungry and runs hot this time around for internal and external cooling to matter (hence RM6 has the edge). You can certainly use custom kernel to boost the GPU even higher but I'd worry about phones with limited cooling. Also I've yet to find ROG 5 custom kernel that boosts GPU frequency.
But really the SoC should improve on efficiency aspect as the ROG 3 did really well in peak and sustained performance. There's hope and excitement for the upcoming AMD GPU on mobile but I'm not sure if other vendors will adopt it besides Samsung.
