Hi All
My name is Phil and I'm new to HTC phones so I apologise in advance.
I wonder if anyone out there can help me, I'm trying to just unbrand my unlocked Vodafone UK HTC One M8 which is currently on KK 4.4.4. What I would like to achieve is an unbranded phone as if I had purchased it unlocked from HTC with the warranty in tact that will accept OTA's so I'll get lollipop.
I understand I will most probably have to unlock the bootloader, root, S-off etc but what I'm a little unsure about is, can I get an official stock rom complete with sense 6 installed on the phone and then lock it all back up for warranty (ie in fastboot it states locked, original software, s-on etc etc)
I have read many threads and watched youtube videos that seem to show that it can be done but I would like to check with you guys before I start.
If this is possible, which method would you recommend as there seems to a few different methods.
Also is Sunshine the only s-off method now?
Again I'm sorry but I've come from a Sony xperia phone which unbranding was really easy to achieve without rooting
Thank you in advance
Phil
I take it you took advantage of the recent deal too. Anyone would be crazy not too at that price.
At the moment it seems that the Vodafone m8s can't be s-off'd so we have to wait for root ninja to release sunshine v3 which will work. It doest seem to far off.
Once you have s-off you can change your CID and flash the generic firmware and Rom. We just have to play the waiting game now.
I think sunshine does reset the flags for you, but I'm not sure on that. Oh and don't s-on again unless you absolutely have to send the phone in for service.
Thanks isx for your reply
I did indeed get it while it was on offer
Any ideas on the lead time of sunshine V3?
I have lollipop on my Galaxy S5 and keen to get on the HTC too
Cheers for your help

Hi guys,
To cut a long story short, I have a DHD turning up this afternoon that's locked to Orange but I want to use my Voda sim in it as work pay for that contract.
Now, I've read that I can downgrade the software version, that will then allow me to run the easy s-off tool that will also sim unlock the device, but ideally I want to use the phone as stock for a while before I start messing about with ROM's.
Can I upgrade the phone's official software via htc once the downgrade and sim unlock has been completed?
If I can't, what's the fastest / closest ROM available to the orange stock ROM?
Any suggestions?
I'm also worried about warranty as the phone is brand new.
Will doing any of the above void my warranty? Is there anything I can do to revert back if it is?
And just to check, have I got this right...
- new phone
- if software version higher than 1.7xx downgrade
- use One click ENG S-OFF to sim unlock
- upgrade back to latest stock version
thanks,
blastman

If you install a WWE (generic) stock rom then yes, on a custom rom no. But the devs keep their custom roms up to date so no need to worry about HTC updates.

I'd recommend leedroid or android revolution, but if you want as stock as possible then a WWE rom.

There's been some controversy about this. I haven't been able to find in the warranty terms that messing with the software voids the warranty. Ofcourse if you brick your device then it's another story. But your phone can always be returned to as it was when you got it, so no problem there.

You'll need radio s-off, not eng s-off.
Follow these two guides from jkoljo:
[GUIDE] How to downgrade 1.7x/1.8x/2.x to 1.32.405.6
[TOOL][VIDEO] One click Radio S-OFF, SimUnlock (Easy Root & S-OFF Guide)
When you're done you will have a 1.32 WWE rom with root, simunlock and radio s-off. I wouldn't recommend upgrading to higher version stock rom because you really don't gain much and higher versions are unrootable.
Or if you insist on updating you can try following this guide
And if if you decide on a custom rom (which I really recommend) then you can read further from their respective threads.
that sir, is perfect.
thank you.
I'm not new to xda has I've had several phones that's I've flash before, but it's been a while and as with every new phone I need a catch-me-up.
thanks
About the warranty..
I remember someone on xda saying they haven't heard of a SINGLE case, where rooting/custom rom would have denied warranty repair/replacecment.
Also, if you're not afraid, you would ultimately win in court, even if they did. If you have watched the iPhone news, Geohot won the case against Apple regarding jailbreaking: It's your device, you can do what you want with it

Hi,
Why not just buy a SIM unlock code from one of the many online sellers ?
I did this prior to rooting my branded (Orange UK) to run my German O.Tel.O SIM and had no dramas with OTA.
HTH,
Dave.
Didn't need to do either.
They've sent me an unbranded sim-free version!
Happy days

Why pay for something so unnecessary when it can quite easily be done by yourself?
Hey guys,
I'm due to receive my HTC One X later this week, direct from Orange UK. Big issue for me is the fact that the handset will be Orange bloatware branded. Now I've heard that their firmware isn't actually too bad and has had little customisation. However, what I am dubious of is the fact that Orange take MONTHS to release firmware updates... Incredibly frustrating.
SO, all I should like to do, is get my HOX running the plain and simple stock firmware. So I can receive OTA updates direct from HTC
Now, I'm very new to HTC. This is my first HTC phone since my run in with an old Window's PDA phone around 6 years ago... I became very gifted in the art of debranding and customising Samsung Android phones within the past two years, however HTC is a different game entirely!
Please, can someone give me a simple (I mean really dumbed down) version of how to debrand my HTC, how to root it (if necessary) and anything else in between! I would really, really appreciate it. I am a Mac OS X user, so Mac instructions would obviously be preferable
Thank you all very much for your time!
Eddy
MOD Can I have this moved to Q&A please?
You have just follow this tutorial for MAC OS X user
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592922
Briefly, you need to unlock the bootloader in order to flash custom recovery and then custom ROM.

Thank you. Which ROM should I go with? I'd just like a plain and simple one that I will receive update from HTC for.

You can't get OTA updates if you unlock your bootloader from htcdev.com.
Sheesh, have you even read any of the topics in this forum? ;-)

how would this work?
i too am due to get a voda branded HOX which I want to debrand. I'm not interested in rooting or anything... all I want to do is put stock HTC firmware on there which would receive stock unbranded HTC OTA updates as and when they are released....
is there any way to do this yet bearing in mind that I am not fussed about rooting?
Without s-off you can't debrand, you would have to go custom but then you wouldn't get ota updates

Wait to see if somebody can change the bootloader to S-OFF mode and then alter your CID if you want to use the stock HTC firmware and have OTA updates.
Custom firmware can track the latest/greatest HTC firmware versions anyway so you'd get roughly the same end result.
i found this over at modaco but am not sure what exactly has been done:

I know this is an old phone but my mother was complain about it so I told her I'd see what I could do, the usual method of unlocking the phone via htcdev does not work, just gives me code is to long error, so I turned to the forums looking for way to unlock and root the phone, all I want to do is install CM 10.1 but since I can't even get it unlocked, and it will not downgrade with RUU is come to ask if anyone here is still alive is there a still working method with active links to I can get the job done?

Well first I tried unlocking it via HTC dev but it would not take the code, so I came to the forums and seen that first I have to debrand it, so I'm stuck at debranding since the phone will not allow the firmware to be downgraded, which i learnt then that id have to force downgrade h-boot so I can downgrade the firmware, thats where im at, stuck at debranding -.-

You don't require to debrand to unlock IMHO...............go word by word on the instructions on HTCdev.com, Just proceed to the steps since you have an unlockable bootloader
Hi all.
Its some time since I last rooted a phone, so I am looking for a refresher. I have a new M8 which is locked to Vodafone UK and want to be able to use it on EE or Giff Gaff. I don't want to update the ROM and if possible I would still like to get stock software updates.
I have found the thread ... VomerGuides [M8]: Bootldr Unlock, S-OFF, SuperCID, Firmware Upgrade & Custom Recovery and can follow this, but wanted to know at what point I can stop? I think what I am trying to do is to the SuperCID bit, is that right?
Thanks.
Mark.

wrong section for questions, the right section is http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help
Carrier unlock it before doing any custom stuff and if you're on 4.4.4 no s-off unless its been updated you can try it type sunshine s-off on your phone and it will do a compatibility test if it passes you will have to pay 25$ don't know how much that is in pounds but it's worth it the devs worked hard on it
Ok, so I did a little digging around, and it seems like I should be able to handle this. But I would really like some guidance from some experienced developers. I recently bought a certified refurbished factory unlocked m8 from Amazon, and it is branded T-Mobile. I I am a cricket user so I run on the att towers , not that that really matters. I just want to get this thing unbranded , and loaded with the HTC sense and or android software without having any of the T-Mobile screens or apps or any of that. Like it came straight from HTC with no carrier stuff on it. I understand I'll have to root, S off ( whatever that means) and a bunch of other things. I've played with it a little bit, getting into fast boot and recovery mode on the phone itself while not connected to the computer. I have no software that I need for this task, nor any of the roms yet or anything else. I am hoping this community of developers can help me with suggestions for the easiest and quickest way to do this, and then I think I want to relock it, not to a carrier but so that everything stays set until and if I decide I want to do any more with the m8. I want the m8 just stock HTC like fresh off the line, not really sure I need developer mode unlocked on it as far as the rom or what have you. But,I'm not sure, that's why I'm here hoping you guys can help me. And I was looking through the posts about doing this to m8'S so please don't just point me to those, I need some more clarification and basically just a step by step on how to get this done , and then I'll probably be asking for tips on what I can do with the desire 520 , if all goes well with the m8 and it replaces my 520 then I would like to use my 520 to practice and see what all I can do with rooting and modifying everything . Anyways. To recap Please help me get the m8 like I just bought it from HTC with no carrier so only stock HTC software, and I don't know if it still gets updated or not but the ability for ota updates just in case. And locked back up so I can't somehow accidently screw it up. And thanks in advance for all your help and advice everyone

Ok guessing I'm in S off mode already based on that and figured that this information would help you guys better inform me of what steps I will need to take .
Does anyone know if loading the newest rom from HTC for unlocked phones will get change the cid and remove the T-Mobile apps or will I need to manually change the cid to something somehow and then load the HTC rom. Please any advice would be very helpful, there is so much content on this site to sift through and I work twelve hour shifts 6 days a week and have a two year old, I am having a tough time finding the time to go through all these posts so any advice on this or please link me to a post that would solve this would be immensely helpful and very appreciated

There are some different approaches you can take. If it's the official HTC RUU (ROM Update Utility) you want to use, you would need to change the phone's CID. Then I would suggest the US Developer's Edition RUU, which is designed for use on AT&T's network (and therefore will have full AT&T band support).
The process will be somewhat involved. Briefly, you'll need to:
1) Setup adb/fastboot and unlock the bootloader: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708571
2) Put custom recovery TWRP 3.1 on the phone: https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html
3) Root by flashing SuperSU 2.79 using TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/stable-2016-09-01supersu-v2-78-release-t3452703
4) Change the CID and MID: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/guide-update-to-official-developer-t3002003
5) Finally, run the 6.12.1540 RUU: http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_6.12.1540.4.exe
Another possible method, stop after step 2 above, then flash the ROM from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/rom-stock-unlocked-developer-sense-7-t3262894
