About 6 months ago I rooted my HTC One M8 using Hasoon's toolkit. I selected TWRP as my recovery and created a backup before installing root.
HTC then released the 4.4.3 update. My HTC notified this was available but as I wasn't using the default recovery the update wouldn't install. I therefore installed a copy of the default recovery and the update downloaded and installed. Root checker indicated that was my device no longer rooted. I did still have the SuperSU app listed, however it would no longer run.
I've now tried to install a few apps that have indicated that they won't run on a rooted device. I think some remnants of the rooting were left behind during the update install.
So today I reinstalled TWRP and restored the backup that I created 6 months ago. Afterwards I again restored the default recovery.
Again I was notified that the 4.4.3 OTA update was available to download. After this installs I loose all wifi functionality. The wifi icon flashes green a few times but wifi doesn't actually switch on.
From information gained for a few websites I believe there is a mismatch between my firmware and the OTA update. I'm now at a loss as what to do next.
Output from getvar all gives

First why you restored your 6 months old backup .
You are on latest kitkat firmware 3.19 and your old backup would be of firmware 3.16 and this is causing issue .
So now what you want to achieve ?
EDIT : If you want working wifi then flash any kitkat custom rom or use stock backup from HERE and restore it.

I've downloaded the stock backup you linked to. My HTC is European non-carrier version so I hope that version will be OK.
Could you point me to some easy instructions on how to install? I've done everything previously using Hasoon's toolkit following instructions on the web which I can no longer find.
I'd like to get the phone back to as 'normal' state as possible so that when Lollipop arrives this will also install.

As you can see version-main: is still blank.
I copied the stock backup to the TWRP directory on my SD card and then restored.
I'm now on 4.4.4 and have working wi-fi.
Many thanks, hopefully everything is going to be OK for here onwards.
Now just have to restore my apps and data,

Sorry to bump this up again.
I've got no wi-fi again :crying:
I managed to get things again running 4.4.4. I then got notification of the lollipop update.
This I installed, however, I had a few problems so returned to my back up just before installing this OTA.
I accepted the OTA again and now my wi-fi has gone again.

The version main only returns when you flash the appropriate firmware and then the TWRP recovery that doesnt create the missing main version bug

I think you mean the other way around. You have to flash the firmware with the updated recovery (2.8.4.0). Flashing the recovery after the firmware doesn't bring back OS/version-main.

A custom recovery is not a firmware so what i say is what i mean.
Flash the devices firmware that will bring back the os version number in the bootloader, then if you need a custom recovery you have to flash one of the latest twrp versions.
Twrp caused the "bug" of the missing os number but doesn't bring it back. In the newer version this issue is resolved
But to help the OP out here, go to the backup collection thread and download any 2.22.401 nandroid backup including the stock recovery. Restore the backup and flash the stock recovery. Then enter the OS and update via ota's.......that should do the trick

Unfortunately neither of the two methods worked.
Toggling airplane mode switched mobile data off and on but didn't bring back wi-fi.
Resetting the phone from within the android menu didn't seem to do anything at all. I was warned about the erasure of settings etc but then nothing happened.
I eventually did a factory reset from bootloader and that sorted the issue.
Lollipop installed and working wi-fi
On a slightly different topic, my phone seems now to be in some sort of limbo root state.
The back up you originally linked to and I installed using TWRP was rooted. However, after the Lollipop OTA the problem arose.
I still have the SuperSU app installed but this complains about no SU binary being installed.
I've used the TWRP file manager and can see SU in /system/xbin and SuperSU.apk is in /system/app
My instinct is to find the latest version of SuperSU.zip, copy to root and reinstall using TWRP.
Would like some confirmation this is the right way forward?

Sorry to bother you again.
My phone is working fine, however, my phone keeps prompting me to register with HTC.
The back up which you linked to in an earlier post and I installed on my phone was a Nordic edition.
When I try to register the countries listed are Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. I'm in the UK.
Is there an easy way to change this ie without installing a different backup? If not then it's not a problem.

No easy method .You need to flash UK backup . .
But you can disable or freeze the app using titanium backup.

Hi everyone! My problem is that if I flash any rom (I've tried ARHD, Viper), the phone gets stuck at the boot screen. I've left it in that state for almost an hour and it hasn't progressed further. Restoring my nandroid backups also yields the same result. My fastboot getvar all:

The phone is currently unlocked, s-off. I tried flashing with both, philz and twrp, none work. Also, these roms worked before on the same phone with the same recovery so I really have no idea of what went wrong. The firmware on the phone is 1.56.720.6 (Asia-India). I have tried clearing the cache partition multiple times, but it doesn't help.

This, the partitions get altered so you can't just simply flash back
According to the OP's getvar output they've NOT done the GPe conversion as the HBOOT version included in the RUU is 3.18.0.0000 and the OP is still on 3.16.0.0000
OP, I'd follow my guide linked in my signature and you should be good to go

I hadn't touched the firmware, so there shouldn't be any problem related to that. Anyways, a rom and recovery do Not affect an RUU flash.

I flashed the international fw zip, and ARHD, (I had checked the hash of the file) and it still didn't work. Also, when I would reboot, some random artefacts would appear during the boot animation (different each time, sometimes wouldn't appear), such as there would be a random flash of purple across the screen or the boot animation would leave a trail behind it (like the effect you get web you would drag a stuck window in win98) etc. sometimes TWRP would act extremely sluggish while sometimes it would be fast and snappy. Quite a few times, while flashing any rom, the screen would go black and reboot to TWRP at random (even after disabling the display timeout). I tried formatting all the partitions on the internal storage. Still gave me problems. I tried to repair file system of each partition in TWRP. The data partition could never get repaired. All of these random problems lead me to believe that this was 99% the fault of the phone/hardware. Luckily I was within the 14 day replacement period and so I went out today after flashing the faux locked/s-on bootloader (I know I should not mess with firmware unless required, and I hadn't till now but I didn't care anymore since I was getting it replaced anyway. I also had 2 dead pixels and a scratch on my camera glass. Now I just have to sit back and wait for a new phone
We've seen this issue on Viper a few times and it usually happened after someone installed e.g. a VZW recovery to the GSM phone or vice versa.
A wrong recovery would flash stuff into the wrong partitions.
A RUU for your device, really just any, should fix it. You should run a RUU and then factory reset right afterwards from bootloader BEFORE flashing another custom recovery.
There is a cingular (AT&T) RUU out right now from HTC here: http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_...G_20.31A.4145.02L_release_368350_signed_2.exe which you could try - it is a GSM RUU. We don't really have WWE 401 RUU yet.
Just make sure you don't grab a SPRINT or Verizon RUU if you find any!!!!!!

Too late for trying a fix , I just want to know what caused it, and I'm 1000% sure I had the right recovery, because as I said, I flashed many other roms in the past with the same recovery, and the problem came after I tried ARHD. And this is the gsm phone.
Yeah well no idea then. Just know I've seen this happen from wrong recoveries. Also not the time to dig into it any further if you've gotten that resolved already I'll leave it as is. Thanks for asking me though. Just keep in mind I've been out of XDA since months and am only slowly reading my way back in so I'm sure there are way more knowledgeable guys around regarding firmware, softbricks and the like.

In such a big mess! I have the same problem as the OP - same to the last dot. I am on India version of device, and was just trying to update firmware to 4.4.3 and in that quest i flashed firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54899772&postcount=1392.
Post that camera and wi-fi stopped working - so I thought may be I screwed up with boot.img and reflashing Viper/ADHD would solve it. While on my way to install Viper I cleaned/wiped data in recovery and hit reboot accidentally which got the phone to stuck in bootloop. I pushed in back in recovery however, since then I have not been able to install either Viper or ADHD. I even tried doing a nandroid back-up from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54940131&postcount=1419, however nothing brings me past the splash screen.
Off-late (few hours) I am not been able to do a back-up (nandroid) as my recovery throws cant mount sdcard or sdcard1 both. Please help!

Yes, I did. Using HTCDev.
At the moment, I would be just happy with someway of going back to the clean slate. Is there a way I could go back to original/stock using ADB/Fastboot as recovery also doesnt seem to work.
Thanks

Bump!
Anyone?
Help! I've bricked my HTC One M8!
I had TWRP and root and wanted to install the latest OTA update. I downloaded what I thought was the stock recovery and flashed through Fastboot.
Everything was fine, rebooted and the OTA updated downloaded and installed successfully. However, on re-starting, the phone is stuck on the HTC One logo screen. The power button is un-responsive.
I can power down with "power and up" and get to fastboot with "power and down". If I select "Recovery" I go to the stock recovery screen.
It's an unbranded UK model and I did a get var all before flashing:

This is the recovery that I downloaded and flashed:

Any idea if I can revive this thing?
Thanks all!
I've managed to fastboot TWRP onto there and I can get into the TWRP recovery screen.
Any idea what next?
Try reinstall SuperSu zip and reboot.
If still stuck, restore 4.16.401.13 backup (system only)

Thanks for the prompt response! I haven't taken a backup and I'm a bit out of my depth here!
I've downloaded the 4.16.401.10 firmware from XDA. Would that work? How do I flash it?
No.. that won't work.
As I said.. reflash SuperSu zip since now you have TWRP installed.
If still stuck, restore the partition part from 4.16.401.13 backup
I know you don't make the backup.. how can you make backup when you can't boot your device after OTA, right ?
I have that backup and it's in my thread linked in my signature

No problem .. happy to help
Another thing - please remove your serial & imei no. from your first post
LOL! I'm such a noob!
Thanks again!
I followed the instructions fine and never hit a snag, upgrading from Android 4.4.4 stock but rooted to the latest ARHD running Android 5.0.1. I'm not sure if the issue is related to the lollipop update or the rom but once my phone screen locks I lose my WiFi connection. I can go into WiFi and see the available networks, select my one and click connect but nothing happens, the only way to get WiFi working again is to restart the phone which is becoming really frustrating. I have tried forgetting the network then re adding it too but the issue remains. Anyone else had this problem or know of a fix?
On a less annoying note when iIstart up it first acts like it's loafing bootloader with the red text at the bottom of the screen then restarts itself and boots fine.

Your HTC is WWE and your bootloader is at 3.19 so i suggest to restore a stock backup from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3086860
Take the 4.16.401.10, that will work. And if you also put back the stock recovery you can also perform official OTA updates.
READ the opening post very carefully as its very good explained !

Im now back to stock, running the latest firmware - no more updates available and though it was fixed but the wifi has just dropped out and had to restart to get it back (I can see the network it just will not connect). Does this mean it is a Lollipop issue?

Post the current getvar all.
Also, you should delete the serial number from your last getvar all (and the new one, of course) as that is personal info.
You may need to OTA again. I think some OTAs had WiFi broken, even on fully stock devices; and it was fixed on a subsequent OTA.
If you restore a backup 4xx10 and made Ota to 4xx13 he did not update the firmware. Must restore the backup 3xxx and make ota. This will solve the problems with wifi.

I was thinking along those lines (why I asked for updated getvar data) as the radio number indicates 3.xx firmware.
But I am surprised up updated at all, with the improper (old) firmware.
I do not see any other reason malfunction wifi, in addition to hardware failure.
The last ota was not large, so it may be that it could be downloaded. Let's wait author may write off something that already everything is running or not

Hi,
second try. First post didn't go through... good thing I didn't save what I typed.
I'm trying to update my firmware, I've read somewhere that a RUU is the easiest way to do so. The one I found "somewhere" doesn't go through with the update proses. It spits out error 155, bootloader is relocked hboot version is 3.16.000 and I'm S-on (not that I was able to change that).
I'm loosing my patience and I'm about to throw the phone in the trash. I've some one can point me to a RUU that work with it I'd be in your debt. The carrier is O2 Germany BTW.
thanks and happy new year.
Even though I can guess which RUU that you might need .. is best to post
fastboot getvar all result without serial & imei no. to confirm it
If it is really a O2, I'll link you the RUU

Yeah .. not to post them online.
Here is your RUU - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934555499
This will update your device directly to lollipop 4.20.206.1
then after check for software update, I believe there will be a few more OTAs

Thanks for the quick response. I've started the download, but slow internet means it'll take about 45min I'll report back once I'm done.
I realized I haven't really said anything about my intentions, I did that the first time I wrote the post which wasn't posted because my session in the forum got kicked or something.
I wanted to update CM to CM12 and I've managed to flash a stock ROM with lollipop but wifi won't work. So my main concern was updating the firmware so that I can flash CM12. This would enable me to do so?
thanks again.
Restore a stock ROM, you can't use lollipop. Wifi won't work because you have hboot 3.16.0000
You only can restore 1.54.206.10 stock ROM and its stock recovery then do all OTAs up to lollipop then only it work for wifi and other thing.
Using a RUU will remove everything on your device including internal storage (so make backup) then it will update everything including firmware to lollipop. So it is faster compare the nandroid backup method. You have less OTA to do.
Got to rest now .. already in bed .. its 4 AM here .. I'll check your progress tomorrow .. good luck

When you asked for RUU I expect you know all the requirements to run RUU ...
Your problem is related to PC/USB to device connection problem ...
You need to relock bootloader before you run RUU because your device is S-On
(I believe you did that as stated on post #1)
and you need a Windows PC with USB2.0 and latest HTC USB driver installed.
If you're not sure about HTC USB driver - download HTC Sync Manager - http://www.htc.com/us/support/software/htc-sync-manager.aspx
install then after uninstall HTC Sync Manager but leave the HTC USB driver

You need htc_fastboot.exe to install the RUU zip.
Follow the steps as explained here but using your own RUU zip (skip that no.1) -

Or if you prefer the exe method .. you can follow this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67314040&postcount=1749

Used adb reboot bootloader and repeated everything all again right from fastboot oem lock doing ruu and all still it is same

Hey guys,
today I flashed the android Revolution 4.4.4 KitKat version on my htc one m8.
It worked great but I can't turn on my wifi.

Can someone tell me which firmware I have? or how I can figure it out?

Why cannot ? You can do OTA updates as they will update your firmware.
Restore 1.54.206.10 nandroid and install 1.54.206.10 stock recovery.img then OTA updates.
Read the backup thread linked in my signature.

First you said you can't because the device is S-On, now it's different reason.
Read the backup thread ... use correct TWRP version.
Or you can go the RUU way ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63024353&postcount=6
Option 1 is RUU method
Option 2 - just ignore, won't work for you
You need these - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926362&postcount=4
