[Request] flashable boot.img - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can somebody give me a flashable boot.img? I don't know how to install it when it's not a zip. I flashed the recovery.img instead of the boot.img and now it reboots only to recovery
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Free mobile app

Just flash some custom ROM mate.
Besides, for which rom you are asking boot img?

TWRP 2.8.4.0 has build-in *.img flashing. No need for any other app/flashable zip/whatsoever.
Simple go to Install and change the Zip option at the top to Img

twrp back to cwm?

i just installed twrp...whats the safest way to reinstall cwm? should i just reflash the cwm recovery tar file?
Yes, the tar file only changes up your recovery system.

I would like to know the opposite. How do I go from CWM to TWRP?
Is there a zip I can flash in CWM?
Also, why are you going back to CWM?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
to get twrp just download goo manager click menu and click add open script recovery and now you have twrp to get cwm download rom manager and click instal clock work mod recovery

I have used Mobile ODIN to flash back and forth between recoveries. You can find ODIN flashable files for the different recoveries here.

Yes... Go to the twrp thread in the development section. I put a flash zip file for twrp there.

I think the easiest is to flash CWM just like anything else from within your current recovery. Takes just a second then reboot recovery and will have CWM.

Flash kernel with twrp

Hey guys,
Been trying to flash a new kernel.
According to all I gave read, I can do it in twrp, yet every time I do, it fails.
Anyone have thoughts as to why?
Note:
I do not have access to Odin so I am looking for simple and efficient.
Thanks
Rooted note2,PACman rom, twrp ver 2.4
Could you explain more?
Try twrp 2.4.2.0 or mobile odin.
Sent from my GT-N7100
I have read here one can flash a kernel through twrp just as you would flash a rom. Every time I try this process the flash fails.
Is there something I am missing?
Of does one need Odin to flash a kernel?

to flash kernel from twrp, you need kernel in flashable zip
if kernel available in tar then you have to flash with Odin
can you add link which kernel you have downloaded
So it looks like there are about 5 different ways to convert a kernel from zip to tar.
By chance any way to make a kernel from tar to zip flashable?

yeah you can find tutorial on how to make flashable zip on XDA.
you have to get kernel img file then need to learn how to make it flashable zip

Note ii won't boot into cwm, only stock recovery

Hello,
I was trying to flash a kernel but after some reboots I noticed that the phone won't boot in cwm but only in the stock recovery. I reflashed cwm through rom manager but nothing happened. I then tried to install twrp but again nothing happened. I was told that I have to delete 2 files inside system to make cwm stick but the files do not exist for a reason. Please help me guys!

Interesting link on Rootz about this even though its for a Verizon Galaxy Nexus-click here. Looks like you can, but kernal has to be placed in specific folder. Don't hold me to this, as Galaxy Nexus is a different species.
You can use any kernel, but the boot.img/ramdisk/init.rc/bootclasspath variable has to be modified for MIUI.

You have to unpack the boot.img then make the edits then repack. Post what kernel you want and I'll do it later

Download this zip: http://db.tt/gIQ702Z8
Then REPLACE the boot.img that is in there with the new boot.img/kernel you want to flash (AKA, unzip, replace boot.img with kernel you want, then rezip)
Now flash in recovery and you will be running any kernel you wish
Technical details of my swapKernel.zip: unpacks current boot.img to temporary folder, unpacks boot.img you wish to flash, swaps ramdisk, repacks NEW zImage (of kernel you want to use) with current ramdisk (of kernel that is currently on the device) and then flashes that new boot.img
Sent from my buttered S3
Wait. So download the kernel I want, and replace the boot.IMG in the kernel with the one in that zip?

Download kernel you want
Take the boot.img you just downloaded and REPLACE the boot.img that is in my zip above and flash
So
Download boot.img
Download zip above
Unzip zip above
Replace boot.img in zip with boot.img you want
Rezip
Flash in recovery
Profit

It seems to have worked. thank you a ton! but one last question, what app do you recommend to make kernel tweaks?
And i dont know what it is.. but it seems to have broken wifi?
Try rebooting
If it persists, you'll need to flash the other original kernel back
Try another version/kernel maybe?
The Trickdroid kernel app is great (play store, free)

Ah, I know what it is
Flash the zip of the kernel you want WITHOUT the boot.img inside (so that you're modded boot.img isn't replaced)
The thing is, each kernel also comes with modules and other built specially for that kernel, so those need to be flashed along with the kernel (but since you don't want to flash the entire boot.img for MIUI, you need to first do the steps in my post above and then flash the zip for the new kernel WITHOUT the boot.img to keep your special boot.img)

No it dosen't flash via recovery you must install boot.img custom via fastboot and computer. In the nandroid backup you have boot.img go in fastboot connect to computer and flash the boot.img

It's lapoyta onelyx kernel.
Nothing is stuck, but I was just experimenting with kernel. So to go to a previous setup of nandroid, I need exactly the same settings on which I tested the kernel. I don't know which options I chose when I flashed the corresponding zip file.

No you don't need to reflash the kernel. Nandroid backup is what you backup last time with the kernel included inside when you restor it you have your phone with the latest thing you backuped. If you backup ARHD with lyapota kernel when you restore the backup you will have ARHD with lyapota kernel you will not have ARHD with different kernel because you backuped ARHD with lyapota kernel.

now:
1. When you flash nandroid backup you must install it via recovery and flash the boot.img from nandroid backup
2. When you install ROM you must install via recovery and flash boot.img from rom archive
3. When you flash kernel only you must to install modules via recovery and flash boot.img from kernel archive
What you can't understand? Nandroid backup is like you install rom all the installation on s-on device is the same!!!

yes when you flash the nandroid you don't need to flash any kernel it is included in the nandroid backup but if you want to change the kernel after restoring the nandroid you must to flash the boot.img from your new kernel and after this the modules of the new kernel. Kernel is not only the BOOT.IMG and all boot.img is different for each ROM and kernel!!!!
