[Q] Apect ratio on old 4:3 tube tv with fire tv - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I try to keep my old 4: 3 tube working with a fire tv. For this I use an HDMI 2 AV converter, because the tube does not. have hdmi The image quality quite well. Only problem is the image format/aspect ratio. The content is streched over the whole screen. In 16: 9 movies the top and bottom black bars are missing and 4: 3 series are shown as a square withe black bars left and right. Looks a little bit strange on a 4:3-tv . Does anyone have any idea or experience, whether you can change this somehow? On the old tv itself is not possible.
Purchase of a new current TVs in this case is incidentally not an option because it is an heirloom of my wife's grandmother. Must therefore not be proposed.
Thanks

They say it's cheaper to keep her, understood. Use old tv as tv stand for New tv. Problem solved. Far easier for Jesus to. Feed many with bread and fish than to get good viewing on old tv.

It still doesn't allow a 4:3 aspect ratio. 720p or 480p is going to look just as wonky as 1080p.

a device like this might work for you. I have one working on an old boob tube with a Logitech Revue. Picture is adequate but your mileage may vary.

Hi, I've allready solved the problem. I've showed my wife, how unsharp the old tube is compared to the lcd of my notebook. That was the missing argument to convince her, that a new tv is the far better solution . Therefor I got with rp201's suggestion but without the tv-stand .
@tekweezle: thats exactly the device I use to get the fire tv to my old tv.

Blurry screen with MHL to HDMI

I bought the more expensive mhl cable and when I connect to any TV at all when I stream nextflix or play any movie the quality is horrible. Its hard to even make out what's going on. Is there a rom or something to fix this?

try and stream a hq quality youtube video and see what pic is like. ive noticed most time trying stream netflix the quality of netflix is causing it to give bad pic.
I tried it. It looks good only with HQ YouTube. Is there anyway to get normal streaming videos or Netflix to look good. I saw a YouTube video were a guys gs2 looked perfect with all streaming

well there are some hd movies on netflix or a movie from market will both look good idk about if there way get reg netflix to look good i havent seen it done.
a lot of shows on the the netflix app is like 480p at best thats why when shown on your 720p-1080p tv it would look very uhh.. bad. You probably need to find shows and movies at higher resolution for it to look crisp.
Well it definitely isn't showing in 480 . Its so horrible I can't even make out faces. There has to be something wrong. Cause the cable is useless

obviously if viewing hq youtube videos produces a good pic then the problem lies within the netflix app itself and its lower quality being streamed. the cable is serving its purpose you just need to stream hd quality video
netflix sucks on my phone
I notice this as well and if you look very closely the same distortion can be seen on the phone as well. I hope we get a better netflix app. I can't believe my wii gets better picture than this great phone. This totally sucks.
Netflix just needs to get it together and make there **** all hd...no reason y I should have to watch low quality picture on phone or streaming on my flat screen

It has nothing to do with this or your NHL HDMI converter. Its more then likely the sync issue between your TV and output of signal from your phone. I can almost assume your outputting to a plasma? Which has a higher refresh rate then a LCD has, this is the problem. Your phone can't satisfy the output request of the plasma, in other words it can't keep up. On a LCD it would look pretty good.

I believe his "blurriness" is referring to the resolution and not the refresh rate. The refresh rate translate to the smoothness and clarity of movements on the screen. I can see what you think he meant by the blurriness, but ultimately, the resolution on netflix is too low to be projected with clarity on a 1080 lcd/plasma screen.
and damn 4.5 years on here with no thanks.. here is one.
+1 - Teo032, there's your thanks.
Anyway, Netflix automaticly cuts the quality down if its not streaming on wifi
Remember when Netflix was first released, it was only to a few phones. The dev masters had to develop work arounds and hacks to get the apk to work. Soon Netflix caved (so we think) and made it available to the masses. You don't think the engineering that went into the final development of the app will prevent total streaming from phone to TV? The Netflix apk is for personal use, for your personal phone, not for streaming to some capture software to be pirated off of some torrent web site. Just put yourself in their shoes. To keeps the deals they made with the production companies, that had to appease them somehow. You can't stream HD quality content from your Netflix app on your phone to any TV out there, no matter if its LCD or plasma. They don't want you to. Its only intended to be viewed from your phone.

People pay Monthly for there Netflix services...you can stream from ps3 to your TV why would it matter that your deciding to use your phone? Either way your paying for the service...bottom line is Netflix is primarily low quality movies...

ps3 requires a TV, same thing with xbox360. You needs a TV to view Netflix, Hulu+ with game consoles. That's a given. But your smartphone already has a viewable screen. No need to attach any TV. So, they can purposely lower the quality. One of the MAJOR concerns with the movie (old school) studios is piracy. They flawed it from the get go. INTENTIONALLY!
Believe you me! I'll be watching "The Human Centipede" from Netflix on my HD 70" 240hts LCD TV from my phone RIGHT NOW if it can be done. With good quality.
Sorry, but it can't be done.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Nope I tried on 2 LCD TVs. And no the picture on my phone will always look great while the TV is unviewable. And I can have a megavideo movie playing on my phone that looks excellent when the TV quality is still horrible as well. Is there any app out that may help this problem?

I have purchased a MHL adapter for my galaxy nexus to stream video to my HDTV and it works to where it shows whats on my nexus BUT the video/image is to big for my tv, the edges are cut off and I cannot get the full screen on the TV. Thanks

Try changing the aspect ratio on your TV.

It's mostly likely an overscan issue. See if you can change the scan mode or something like that (maybe zoom?) on your TV. On my Samsung HDTV, I can switch between 4:3, 16:9, or "Just Scan". The "Just Scan" option fixed the issue.
I tried changing my size on the TV and didn't work still has part of the stream cut off on all sides. Is there some setting on the Nexus that might adjust it?

There's no option on the nexus that I know of. I believe you have to change it from your TV. Maybe google up your TV and see how other people solve their overscan issue?
Here's more information about why TVs have overscan:
http://hd.engadget.com/2010/05/27/hd-101-overscan-and-why-all-tvs-do-it/
Actually that helps didn't know what it was called, I will google overscan...thanks
What brand/model TV do you have?
Many TV's have ways to do 1:1 pixel mapping to get rid of the overscan.
I have a Sanyo plasma TV.

Can I plug it on a TV?

What do you need exactly.? How much?
I want plug it on a TV.
I don't want chrome cast, just want see movie from the tablet to the TV.
My TV has usb port.
Still waiting for nexus to come. So I m just asking.
You need to buy a slimport adaptor, that is the ONLY way to send video to the TV (or chromecast, but you said you don't want that.

Yes but chrome cast need internet. No?
It s only for your tube.
I won't have internet....
Miracast is also a reasonably good option. I bought a Netgear PTV3000 and has been using for the last 2 weeks. It works properly. But once every 2 or 3 minutes, the video will stop for 1 second. It doesn't happen all the time though. I think its probably the range. Also, it happens sometimes if somebody walks in between the tablet and receiver. I don't have any complaint picture quality vice. But it doesn't show in full screen in my TV, there are borders on all four sides, probably because my TV's resolution and tablet resolution are different.

[Q] MHL 2.0 adapter video output is the wrong size?

I'm using the official Samsung MHL 2.0 adapter that I bought direct from samsung.com due to all of the fakes out there. My main issue I've seen is with Netflix but I'm sure it happens all over. I'm using this on an older 720P TV but the screen does not fit exactly. The outputted picture is a little larger than the TV's display so it cuts off a little on the sides. It is not completely unwatchable by any means but still sort of aggrivating. I don't know how to change the size of the picture being output. DPI change? I don't know what size to make the DPI for a more appropriate 720P picture.
Has anyone else had any issues with anything like this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

This is probably just overscan which is normal for a TV (as opposed to a Monitor). It has to do with the fact that old signals/tvs were not completely reliable so they just snipped a bit off the edges to compensate. Roughly... Wikipedia has an article about it.
In my experience there is no easy fix. I've found that no matter what I do I either end up with a black ribbon around the edge or I lose some picture to overscan.

Solution. Get a 1080p TV. Haha. But seriously, you tried all picture settings on TV? If that doesn't work then more than likely you will have to live with it. I dont think DPI changes will fix it. And how the heck did you score a mhl2.0. I've had one in my cart for two months and it is still backordered. Ugh.

Lol your answer is more heart breaking than you can imagine. I have a glorious 60" 1080p panel that is in storage right now because I'm having some work done in the house so I'm using my old backup TV. But....I picked up the adapter right from Samsung for 20$ with their coupon from my note 3 purchase. I will try it on a 1080p eventually I was just curious if anyone had any ideas. Thanks for your input and I hope you get yours soon!

Question about hooking up to my TV via hdmi and not getting full screen.

Has anyone found a way to hook up their tablet to their TV with full display? I bought an hdmi adapter but it has a black bar on each side not covering the whole TV display. My note 10.1 2013 version didn't have this problem.
I have the same issue and haven't found a solution so far. What makes it worse, it defaults to a 1080i 24hz signal which is very noticeably laggy especially when gaming. And the colors are bad. Makes no sense, the note 10.1 should have 0 issue pushing 1080p/60hz when it does usually alot more than that.
what we need is hdmi options. I also want to be able to turn off the screen of my tablet when it's outputting to the TV.
Exactly!!! I even bought an hdmi cable that plugs into power and it's not charging the tablet at all. I also would love if you could shut the tablet off while doing so. Do you think the samsumg all cast wirele hub is the answer? For now anyway? Correct me if im wrong but doesnt it fix all problems were discussing except the "covering the whole screen" part? Well and slight lag... man this sucks... how is this tablet not as supported as the 1st generation one? Lame...

I did some testing today and it really grinds my gears... I have a 3rd party adapter 5 in 1 (hdmi, usb, sd card, micro sd, micro usb) standard 5 pin mhl and an adapter for 11 pin mhl.
-my wife's galaxy s2 works perfectly with the 5 pin. Outputs full 1080p / 60hz smooth and responsive.
-My sgs3 doesn't work at all with the adapter (4.3 stock), it starts charging but there is no image on the screen.
-my note 10.1 2014 works but it outputs 1080p / 24hz and it has a really bad delay that makes it impossible to play games, and of course 24 fps is laggy as ****. And of course it has black boarders on the side.
I can't believe that there isn't a settings menu for hdmi. Even my old transformer tf201 had one. And you get the best experience with the 4 year old sgs2(running 4.2). Unbelievable.

I've never used a physical adapter so can't really draw one. AllShare Cast works really well on the N10.1-14, a lot faster than my old N10.1-12. Video apps that were barely usable on the '12 are no problem on the '14. I'm not a big gamer so perhaps someone who is and uses AllShare Cast can comment.

The TV's got a black frame so it's hard to see. I'd say the picture being mirrored is 100% with some small bars on the sides that are necessary to adjust 16:10 to 16:9. I've noticed nothing distorted in any of the apps/content I've viewed.
PS3
Here's another question, I just hooked my tablet up to my ps3 via bluetooth and it will allow me to share video, pic's, and music. But I have some videos downloaded and put them in that folder where the ps3 is looking for them. I rebooted and the ps3 still does not see the video. its an mp4 so Im not sure if I need to convert it to a different format or what. Anyone have any insight on that? Im still new to the ps3 as I just got it a few months back.
I'm not prepared to pay for another 70-80$ device (that's what allshare costs where i live) to get a good image... This tablet is a highly advanced device and i expect hdmi out to work. As I said it works very well on the 4 year old sgs2 why would it work worse on a 2014 device?

I agree that's a lot more money for something other cheaper devices already do. You go on a still keep your tablet?

EDIT: Never mind. I got it all to work. So I guess thats my work around for now. Im just going to use my ps3 to view the videos I want. Not the ideal solution but it beats spending more money! Hopefully something gets figured out in the mean time. I shouldn't have to rely on a ps3 for this type of thing on such an awesome device.
