Hi all,
I'm using Amazon Fire TV in the UK. With Smart DNS, I can access the USA version of Netflix, which has a much wider choice of content. However, by doing that, my Amazon Prime account does not work any more, as Amazon does not allow you to switch regions with the same account like Netflix.
I'm wondering if there's a way to apply Smart DNS settings to certain apps only, so that I can use the USA version of Netflix, while keeping the rest of my Amazon Fire TV in the UK region?
Thank you! :fingers-crossed:
Hola for android worked for the older version of Netflix, just sideload it. Run it.. Use a mouse to select the Netflix apk and it might work.

Hi,
Thanks for your response - but Hola needs a rooted Android device to work, plus how do you use a mouse with Amazon Fire TV?

Hi,
This can definitely work, depending on how 'smart' your DNS provider is.
Unotelly for example allows you choose channels from different countries using 'Dynamo' i.e. one DNS for all. I think smartdnsproxy does the same.
I'm in Ireland using Amazon Prime US but have used Netflix Ireland & US, BBC Iplayer etc
Unless maybe Amazon Prime UK is not supported by your DNS provider.

If your router can support it (Asus Merlin, Linksys DD-WRT, etc.) you should use DNSMasq.
I have a DNS service which I specify in a dnsmasq file which hosts should use the "smart" dns (everything else not specified uses my ISP's DNS).
Works great and allows every device on your network to have this functionality without any extra configuration on the OS-level.

I think the OP wants ability to specify smart dns for each App and not for each host

Can you post some sample configuration and where it goes for accomplishing this? I am on DD-WRT on ASUS AC1900. Thanks.

I have not used dd-wrt in a while, but you should enable dnsmasq and there should be a section called "additional dnsmasq options" with a big text box. You would enter the following:
server=/pandora.com/199.199.199.1
server=/hulu.com/199.199.199.1
server=/netflix.com/199.199.199.1
and so on...
Where 199.199.199.1 is the IP of your smart dns service. If it has multiple IPs just have multiple lines like:
server=/pandora.com/199.199.199.1
server=/pandora.com/199.199.199.2
server=/hulu.com/199.199.199.1
server=/hulu.com/199.199.199.2
apply changes and you should be good. If it doesn't work, you might have to use what I gave you to do some more research.

Thanks for the info. I do use DNSMasq for blocking updates and for static IPs. Wasn't sure how to target certain hosts for particular DNS. Thanks again.

Hi all,
Now that Amazon Fire TV is launching in the UK and Germany, I am very keen to be able to merge apps from different countries.
I guess to be able to do this, I would first have to either:
a) Switch the device to a different region and then install an app, then go back to my main region and somehow sideload it or install it in.
For example, if I choose the US version as my main hub, I would also like to copy UK apps and German apps across to the US hub (say Demand 5 from the UK, and Zattoo from Germany).
Would this be possible to sit side by side with the US apps then? (I am talking about official Fire TV apps, not standard Android versions designed for mobile phones).
or would I need someone who has the UK version to copy the app out and send it to me?
I guess many people may not have been able to test this yet since the German version will not launch until the 25th of this month, and the UK one next month, but perhaps people know already if apps can be saved and copied.

I think another problem will be geo block, so even if we as a community share the apk's, they still might not work unless the connection is pushed through a proxy from that country.
What I would love to see is a addon where FireTV (or wider xbmc) users can allow to share their connection with the rest of the community as a proxy, this has to be under certain time and bandwidth parameters and only for known geo blocked URL's. (needs to be very clear what acces is given to other users using your IP)
This would allow world wide content for everybody, having a US IP myself, would love to have acces to the UK BBC media.
Some automated addon to select tor exit nodes might work too, but think the performance would be way better if this is done within the FireTV/XBMC community.
Hi Userr12,
The geo-blocking part should not be a problem. The key is using something like Smart DNS (google eyeondemand) which should work for most services.
The beauty about smart DNS is that unlike a VPN, it can unblock any country (A VPN will just work for one at a time), making this perfect for mix and matching apps on the Amazon Fire TV. So, you could switch say from Hulu to Demand 5 or Zattoo etc.
Never heard of that option before, that's great though, direct it on DNS level, will look into it.

Can you give me some more advice on how to do this, for a total n00b? My fire tv is coming shortly, and I'd like to access US Netflix but still have UK apps like Demand 5 and iPlayer. I was planning on buying unblock-us but I'd much rather get something like what you mentioned above.
I'm looking for a tutorial on how to set up a VPN on Fire TV (1st Gen) and/or a Fire TV Stick. I've seen a few add-ons that apparently install a VPN from a specific VPN provider, but I'd like to set up a VPN from the provider of my choice. (I currently have a Premiumize.me account, but that may soon change.)
For best results you will probably have to wait for the FireOS 5 update next month. FireOS 5 seems to be a lot better with the procedure to add VPN compatibility to the FireTV devices then FireOS 3.
I'm using unblock.us and all I have to configure is the DNS. No vpn configuration required.

Yes it will. It is a VPN service all vpns hide your traffic from your isp.
Last question: can you use any VPN provider with it or one specific provider? I'm hoping to find a provider-agnostic add-on I can sideloaad on my Fire Tv.
This question has been asked before but I will answer your question anyway, next time try Google, YouTube or the search bar on Xda before posting though oks.
Not via an app (apk) you cannot, but there is a few vpn add ons In kodi (Google vpn kodi add ons) which if you have a vaild vpn account you can add/sign in to it & use it that way. Not sure if this is what your looking for but at the moment that's the only way I know of using a vpn app (apk)?
Only other way I know which works is to mirror/cast your phone to your fire stick, use a vpn app (apk) on there, turn it on & then open the kodi app (apk) up on your phone (not fire stick) & watch it being mirrored/casted to your tv. A bit of a long winded solution but if your that desperate to access American addons/content on your tv it does work this way, I just pick another addon but each to there own.
If this helped you press that thanks button
https://vpntips.com/fire-tv-vpn-install/
I used this method with pureVPN. prolly others would work too like the article said. Since the firetv has no vpn files your gonna need to install openvpn to put them there. after that I see apps from the appstore possibly working cause they now have the basevpn files. I could be wrong but just something to look out for.

You need to keep in mind that some VPNs keep logs such as HMA. I personally went with a double router setup that will give you the ability to switch between secure and insecure connections.
Hi there,
I imported an amazon Fire Stick to Brazil Payed all import fees and it is a great replacement to Chromecast in many ways, besides hosting Kodi and many Other applications, *BUT I CAN'T* control it form my Phone.
I would like to download the amazon Remote from play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amazon.storm.lightning.client.aosp , but can't due to regional restrictions.
Tried VPN along with other configuration/reconfiguration, without any lucky, please can anyone posts the apk?

Hi all,
I own a 2nd gen fire stick (purchased when I was living in UK with my still active amazon uk prime account).
Since few months I'm back in Italy where
a. the stick is not sold yet
b. amazon prime video has started one or two months ago
Since the latest update everytime I try to watch amazon I got an geo restriction error even if I try to watch the italian catalogue -got a italian prime subscription too -(netflix is working fine on the same stick).
Is there a way to downgrade the version of the OS and to go back to a previous release?
Thank you all for the support.

Did you solve?
i'm from italy, same problem with an used firestick...
Mee too. I've been struggling with "Network error" for ages. Never solved. I've read you need a US Amazon (mine imported from USA) account or the localized version from where you bought the device to solve. I only have a Prime enabled italian account.

There's two things you can try
1 - change your device location
This involves logging into your amazon account on a pc and changing your location to Italy
You then need to deregister your firestick on the firestick account page & sign back in again
This will allow you to use the Italian amazon prime video but any UK restricted videos downloaded I believe will only work for 30days from the download date
How to transfer click spoiler
Transfer Your Amazon Account
To transfer your Amazon account from your current Amazon website to your local Amazon website:
Go to Manage your content and devices and click the Settings tab.
Under Country Settings, click Change.
Select or enter your address, and then click Update.
If you are eligible to purchase digital content from another Amazon website, follow the onscreen prompts to learn more about what will happen if you transfer accounts.
When you're ready, select the option to transfer your account to complete the process.
2 - Use a vpn app & set your location to UK to access UK content
Iv not tried either as I'm not a prime member or moved abroad but that's where I would start

It should show content from the country your amazon account & the firestick is registered to
For example I changed the country from UK to America & it allowed me to download American apps like abc nbc but it removes UK apps like BBC Iplayer until I changed it back
If the app itself is different in the country you may also need to remove it & get the local version but I would have thought it would be the same
I would contact amazon for support & clarification on this issue but as you have already bought a new device it will be pre-registered to correct location

you're right for the fact that apps (like netflix) works and it download italina version, but the problem is with amazon prime content..
I wrote to amazon (both .it and .uk) and both told me the issue can be solved only buying a new stick.
What it's incredible for me is this country blocking that also on hw and not only on sw. (many companies in EU are now obliged to remove any country blocking...)

Maybe the prime app is different - only way to tell is to get the Italian version and install it on the UK stick
You would have to remove the UK one or decompile the Italian one & give it a different package name in its manifest & resign it although that may cause issues depending on how the app works
Other than that I don't know what to suggest

Yes - via adb
Package name is com.amazon.avod
Easy way is to use the app apps2fire - make sure adb is enabled on both your phone and the firestick via developer options - then just find the app & download it to your phone
You can also install apps that are on your phone to the firestick (either installed on your phone or if you have the apk)
Make sure you also enter your firesticks ip address into the app as well
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.koni.appstofiretv
Of course you can do it manually via adb pull terminal commands on a pc or even an apk extractor app
I dont own an italian version right now. Mine is a US imported Fire TV Stick 2. I was able to retrieve the apk thanks to the advices but I guess it makes no sense to upload it cause it's just a USA apk and not an italian one. As I said earlier it gives me a "NETWORK ERROR" error. Maybe it's important to add that Im using dnsmasq to block domains to avoid updates.
Domains blocked are below. Just to be sure that blocked domains dont create issues with Prime Videos. If needed I can upload the US Prime Video apk.

You can download this app on your fire tv by going to the magnifying glass on the home screen and searching for it
Of course you need to be in Canada with your device registered there for it to show
If you are not in Canada the app would be pretty useless to you as it will only work if you're in Canada with a valid bell account subscription
The firestick version also requires you to have bell Internet - so again pretty useless if you don't live in Canada but if you do meet all the requirements no reason why you can't download it yourself

It requires either apple TV 4k or firestick basic (canada version)
It is not compatible with other devices - the mobile app is different as that doesn't require bell Internet so you could use a vpn to canada - you would still require a bell account subscription though
For more information please read the requirements on the bell website
Oi! Just reviving this thread. Here's the scoop. I HAVE an Android TV device that's supported (mibox) I have a valid bell subscription (satellite). What I dont have is a bell internet sub as they dont offer it in western Canada. So when I login everything is just peaches and cream but when I try to watch a show I get the dreaded "you need to be on home network" message.
Anyone know how I can bypass this app-side? I've already decompiled the APK but I'm not sure where to look to find the network check code to modify.
Thanks
