[Q] USB Keeps being plugged in and out - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
When plugging my HTC One M8 into my laptop, about every 30 seconds there is the sound of a USB being plugged out and then plugged back in, and then the typical windows 8 "what do you want to do with this device" notification. I dont think its a laptop problem because my USB memory sticks etc work completely fine. I've tried with all the USB ports, both 2.0 and 3.0.
Any ideas as to what to do to troubleshoot?
Thank you.

I have tried with the cable that came with the M8, and also the cable that came with my old Desire Z

1. Uninstall the drivers for HTC m8 from device manager , accept to delete all drivers and restart you laptop. After restart reconnect your phone and fresh install your phone. Use your original cable.

Sounds like bad cable, bad USB port on pc, or port on device is damaged. Rule out the first 2 first. Try another pc too. If not, probably your device port unfortunately.

I've seen a couple other reports of this happening on Win 8 (8.1 specifically?); and bad port or cable did not seem to be the cause. Don't know if a solution was ever found.

I've had this problem with some cables. An old Treo Pro cable I have does this, as well as a generic 3rd party cable too. The genuine HTC cable works fine as does a 3rd party flat cable I have. I always forget about it and spend 2 hours trying to figure out why the blasted thing kept disconnecting, then I remember and use my trusty OEM cable and all is well...

Will not stay connected via USB

i searched around and i cant find the thread on this.
i was charging my phone through the USB port and it just randomly disconnected. i reconnected at it is recognized for a second then disconnects. the menu comes up on the screen and i see the notification at the top, but after about 2 seconds it just acts like i unplugged it
i have tried multiple USB ports, cables and different PC's and they all do the same thing now.
i installed HTC sync and rebooted the machine. i changed the power settings on the machine and made sure that the USB power management is disabled.
does any one have any idea whats going on?
Do you have a auto kill app such as taskiller ?

no... the phone was just hard reset. the issue was there prior to the hard reset
it does the same thing on my laptop and desktop
both are windows 7 x46 with HTC sync installed
could be your usb port on your handset OR/AND the usb cable's tip that you insert into the port could be loose/failing. wiggle the usb cord at the end where it connects to the phone GENTLY and see if its loose. should be s snug fit...
I have the same problem n started a few threads about it n havent gotten anywhere. My work computer has no problem seeing my phone but my personal computer will not, very very strange. Ill watch this thread n see if a solutions comes about.
seems like a very snug fit too me...
i should also mention that plugged in to the wall charger it has no problems
i have tried 3 different cables and 3 different computer and all USB ports on those computers, all the same issue
I didn't have this issue till now but suddenly same thing started happening to my phone..
I have plugged in my phone using USB with laptop and it shows me charging but after two minute it just discount it...
me and my buddy have the exact same issue here. what i do is, i unplug it a few times and on the 4th i keep it it. seems to be a bit more stable that way.
i don't think this is an issue with faulty usb ports on everyone's separate computers. (could be but i frelling doubt it) ive tried this in multiple windows machines (win7x64 and xp), and it happened on all of them. Only once did it happen on my work mac. i have not, however, tried a different micro usb > usb cable. i only used the htc one. we could have faulty cables. or it could be a phone issue itself, hardware wise whereas these are the only common denominators we have in this problem that i can see.
i lean towards faulty batch of cables. if you plug in the cable to your phone and computer, and wiggle the middle of the cable without touching the ends, it will disconnect.
what gets me is that there is no problem when it connects to the wall usb port. that is confusing. maybe the cable needs a more heavy flow of power to stay connected, which then leads me to believe that usb drives don't have enough juice to keep the thing going, or at least variable flows of power.
i know the phone has an "issue/feature" where it will stop charging the phone completely when it gets to 100% even if you leave it on the charger. maybe some sort of overcharging fail safe right? so what if there is something wonky going on with the phones usb port, or the phone cuts off the connection thinking your done using it?
its late, im speculating just throwing stuff out there.
I'm getting the same problem. Thing is, if it needed more power, why would it still work in a mac? I didnt have this problem until I went through a few different ROMS. So I dunno. I never had this problem before root. But I dont see any reason why it shouldnt fuction normally

can't connect to usb

i can't connect my sgs2 to USB storage. when i plug in the usb cable to my computer and phone it will charge but nothing else happen. i had stock rom before but are currently using jug 4.0. i thought it was the rom so i downgraded to 3.69. still the same problem. i mean i can do anything with the phone just can't let my computer detect the phone. i tried to reinstall the driver, nothing works. please help!
Is your cable a samsung branded one? I had that same problem but with stock rom. I used an LG branded cable and the phone would connect to the computer and charge, but would not go into USB mode.
yeah, i am using the one that came with the phone, i guess i will try to use a different one. it was working fine before, don't know why it just stopped!
This has happened a few time for me. Sometimes the phone has only needed a reboot, the wire definitely plays a big role... I bought some cheap cables that didn't work at all... some of the older roms wouldn't show USB connected unless drivers were installed (kies). An issue I've more recently unveiled is after using an MHL adapter sometimes the USB will connect for 30-60 seconds before unmounting storage again. Hope that helps
My SGSII HercuDom needs more w00t. It always needs more w00t!
I had the same problem on a stock phone (purchased in late Oct from T-Mobile store in Arizona). I would connect it to the computer and it would charge but would not recognize the USB function (for data transfer or modem use).
Took it back to T-Mobile and they overnighted me a new one for no charge. New one works fine.

Cant charge or connect to USB

USB Problem.

Just got a brand new Samsung Galaxy SII T989 from T-Mobile this week, it really is a great phone, only I have a single problem.
The phone charges, it functions properly generally speaking (calls, texts, camera, wi-fi,etc...) but as soon as I connect it to my computer it freaks out.
It acts as if I were disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable 2 times a second. I can hear the phone making the beeping sound it makes once you connect it to the USB every few seconds and in my computer (Which is running Windows 8 x64, just in case.) I can see the "Safely remove hardware symbol pop up and disappear a few times a second as well.
This is really frustrating... I love to take pictures and videos and edit them... I'd also love to copy some music over as well...
So far I've determined it can be the cable, bad drivers, or the phone itself, I just hope it's one of the first two.

Try re installing the correct drivers or switching the usb hub. If that does not work it's most likely the usb cable, swap it for a different one and you should be fine considering you bought the phone new.
Or you got a phone with a bad motherboard which would be crazy considering its new but that kinda sounds like the problem I had

Alright cool, but how does one find currently installed drivers when the device isn't plugged in?

Ok, does it get better or worse if you hold the cable with your finger when it is plugged in to the computer and phone and move it around a bit on the phone end? If so, I even got a Nexus 7 brand new from Google that the charge cable phone end was bad and would not make a good connect and I had to use a different cable and it works fine with my tablet.
If you use the same cable in your AC charger and on the computer then prolly not the cable.
It could be something in Win8 if it is trying to scan your USB port [like maybe a whacked anti-virus].
Have you tried a different USB port on your computer to see if maybe the one you were trying to use is bad itself?
If using a USB hub between your computer and the phone try removing the hub from the equation and connect directly to the computers USB port.

I am using a HUB on a Razer Keyboard that I've always used BUT now that you mention it my webcam had the same problem. It wouldn't work with the HUB on the keyboard. I'll try another USB slot (My computer's other USB slots aren't very accessible which is why I've hesitated to try another slot.)
I don't use anti-virus and yes, the cable works perfectly fine on the AC USB to Power adapter it brings.

I love you. It worked. It's the USB hub which doesn't allow much power to go through to the connected device. Thank yo so much.

[Q] USB port or computer problem?

I searched everywhere but haven't seen this problem. My Sprint Note 2 charges fine in every AC charger I have tried, my OTG cable registers when I plug it into the phone, but no matter what cable or USB port I try on my computer, it isn't recognized at all. No charge light, no system tray notification, no nothing. Every other device I have plugged into my computer is recognized every time.
This is complicated by the fact that I just installed a new motherboard and CPU and I hadn't used USB on my old computer for a while so I don't know if it was working before the upgrade or not. I'm going to try to find another computer to try it on, but does this sound like a bad phone USB port or a computer USB problem?
Never mind. it works on another computer, so it must be a problem with my computer.

ASRock Z370 EXTREME4 and USB-C NOT Working for ADB Sideload

I have a very specific problem.. Not sure if I'll get much help unless you have the same setup as I do but here goes!
Ok, I think I've got everything set up correctly here but I just put this system together this past weekend and decided to try out the USB-C port on the motherboard as my case doesn't have it on the front.. Noticed it takes forever to recognize I've even plugged anything in (Pixel 2 XL). Once it's recognized it's great! Is there an issue here with this? Driver issue maybe? I'm reading through the manual and there really isn't much there.. Plug my device in, 5-6 minutes later I hear Windows recognize it's plugged in. Windows 10 x64 Build 17093.
Also, after it delays in recognizing I have the phone plugged in, everything works BUT ADB Sideload...
I never could get my PC to recognize my device when using the type c port. Always had to use the USB port. I don't know if the type C cable recognizes data I think it might only be a power cable.

That's what I can't figure out.. Someone else is having the same issue with the same exact motherboard I have but seems worse off than I am. Mine just takes a while to be picked up as plugged in but eventually works fine. I installed Ubuntu and it took only a couple minutes to pick it up.. Going to try fastboot/adb as that's never worked..
Stop trying to use a USB c to USB c cable, this has been advised against, doesn't matter what motherboard you have. Go grab your self a normal USB to USB c cable, they work much better and should pick up your phone immediately.
