[Q] Best 3rd party controller out-of-box - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have some games on my Fire TV I'd like to play, but need a game controller. I don't currently have any compatible controllers, so I thought I might as well buy the official one. However, it looks like both it and the Nyko pad are on back-order for around a month. Rather than wait, I'd like to get a decent third party controller, preferrably wireless. Can anyone say definitively which controller (other than the official one or Nyko) is the most functional out-of-box. FYI, my Fire TV is unrooted with current firmware, so anything requiring root is out.
Here are some of my current choices:
Microsoft Xbox 360 controller for Windows (included USB receiver)
Logitech F710, wireless USB receiver
Logitech F310, wired USB
The Xbox receiver supposedly supports up to 4 controllers. Would the Fire TV and any apps currently out support them? I'm partial to Logitech gear, but I read somewhere that on the Fire TV the F710 uses "xinput mode", emulating an Xbox controller. Does this mean it would work just as well as the Xbox or a close second? While I prefer wireless, I listed the F310 for the obvious benefit of not having to recharge or replace batteries. I don't play enough to where a cord would really bother me. If there are major caveats with the wireless ones, I might just get the F310.

Amazon controller would be best in my opinion for full compatibility. I have an ouya controller which works very well and waiting on the nyko play pad pro cause I picked it up cheap on amazon so I couldn't pass it up. If I prefer the nyko, I'll end up getting rid of the ouya one most likely or keep it to use with the other aftv.

Thanks for the input. I had assumed Amazon had best availability on the Fire Controller, but I found it on Best Buy's eBay Store. Supposedly will deliver by Jan 6-13. We'll see.

Compatible Bluetooth Gaming Accessories

Dont suppose you nice folks could give us the make/models of any Bluetooth gamepads that you have got working or have found to not work on honeycomb 3.1. I only know the datel one but I'm looking for a more ergonomic PC pad
Thanks in advance
There really aren't any blue tooth gamepads
I would rename the thread to: Compatible Bluetooth Gaming Accessories. You'll probably get more views and get it eventually stickied.
I do remember a bluetoooth gaming pad from Pelican.

Had a bit of a look into it and you're right, all the Bluetooth stuff seems to be for ps3. Fingers crossed Logitech will do a controller aswell as the keyboard and mouse they're about to bring out!
Thanks for the advice

Wonder if anyones tried it with a xoom?

i suppose that would work. Looks kinda awful though.
Yes that's the one. I remember seeing it at Radioshack or Gamestop. Try eBay and see I'm pretty sure there are more. I'm willing to bet eBay has a couple from China.
I found this on eBay. It's a bluetooth DualShock controller. I don't know if it's a knockoff but it could be despite having the PlayStation Logo in the middle.

That's the link for the bid. I would imagine that works. I wish someone on here has tried this before. I want to know if you're able to map all the keys without issues.
I found on amazon the komodo shockwave wireless wii controller.. wonder if this would work...??

It will not work. PS3 controllers require being synced up via USB. On the xoom, it would require that and an app. There is no sync button on PS3 controllers.

Why isn't it possible on Android?
It even works without extra applications on Maemo: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=66704 http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=41693
At least Honeycomb 3.1 should be able to detect it or is there another problem?
this is intresting, would like to use a bt controller on the xoom soon, flirting with that ebay one. Wii looks like the best bet

For bluetooth, it would require an app or script to change the mac address of the bluetooth in your xoom to that of the ps3 controller.
I think you could do that on a PC as a workaround...
i dont understand? i know sometimes you want more buttons or a different grip design, but the wii controller works great for all the 8bit/16bit games i play. at least it gets you going with a BT controller.
http://android.ccpcreations.com/wiicontroller/wc-compatibility
But the Wii controller isn't good to hold for oldschool games (without motion).
There's only two buttons on the wiimote. Wanna play psone games on fpse so need 4 mappable buttons!

Has anybody found one that does work well for cordy
Your best option is the Datel Retro Wireless controller.

Bluetooth gamepad

What's a great gamepad for the One X? Would prefer non-wiimote and non-sixaxis recommendations. Something that would work OOTB is preferable.

Does it work without a driver? I thought 4.0 brought native gamepad support?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
ICS brought plug and play for usb controllers for bluetooth ones you still need some sort of software/driver to map the keys.
Icontrolpad is better as it is the same price but offers analog controls as well and you can charge your phone with it.
Interesting... Any reviews between the icontrolpad and gametel?

i think out of the choices the sixaxis is on top its easy to setup and most people have a ps3 these days. if you do come across something good though post it up as i love playing games on my HOX, shadowgun is awesome so if there is a better control system than sixaxis would love to know about it.
Phonejoy is a good way to go, some apps are native support for it, for everything else there is an app called BluezIME.
Anybody done any testing on these? Or any pics of them connected??? They all look a bit cheap, Id guess if they really work a better quality Song one may come out soon Hmmm>?

Another vote for PhoneJoy. The buttons and sticks have a bit more resistance than a real PS3 controller, but the feel is pretty good, imo. I got their MHL adapter too, which is made much better than the one I purchased from Amazon, and integrates the HDMI cable into one unit.
BluezIME emulates keyboard and gamepad buttons so it works great with any game that those controls built-in. Unlike it the Sixaxis app, it doesn't need root. Analog support requires native support in the app, the only game I have that has it currently is N64oid, GoldenEye aiming is much improved with that enabled.
With an application called Game Enabler (this requires root), the PhoneJoy emulates a HID game controller. This means Shadowgun will support the analog sticks natively (essentially it will look like a Xbox 360 controller plugged in a USB port, like on a Transformer Prime; which is what the game was developed with). Since you cannot have MHL and USB OTG simultaneously on the One X, this will be the only way to get full analog control with HDTV connectivity.
My phone is not rooted so I have not been able to test Game Enabler. But even with the analog sticks mapped to key presses, control in shooters like Shadowgun is much improved, just takes a bit to get used to at first.
Has anyone tried the onlive wireless controller? http://www.onlive.co.uk/controller Gonna check it out tomorrow myself when I get it back from my friend. Would love to play games on my tv
Wiimotes work stock with the One X too, have used my Datel Retro Wireless with it (also my Phonejoy's work fine). iControlPad is well expensive compared to these two options.

Third Party Remotes

I'm personally not a fan of the stock remote. It's a lot of money for not a lot of buttons. What else have people tried? I've heard of success connecting the Amazon Fire TV Stick remote to the Shield. Has anybody tried the Nexus Player remote or the Roku 3 remote?
I'm currently using the stock game controller and a DualShock 4 controller.
What about Logitech Harmony with the FLIRC universal IR receiver. I've used in my current media center an Acer Revo wonder if the IR will work in Android, I've read yes but I don't know. Off course you will spend more money but Harmony is a plus for me.
I'm just looking for a small remote that will give me the main functions of the overpriced stock one. I've read that the Amazon Fire TV stick remote works with our Shield, and it is only $15 on Amazon, but unfortunately they do not ship to Canada as the Fire TV is not sold here.
Can anyone on this forum recommend a small 3rd party remote that works well with our SATV?

Shield has IR, Harmony remotes work perfectly. No need to buy IR.
Any decent learning universal IR remote should work.
i use logitiech harmony touch
although i want to try the new amazon remote firetv remote as i do like their remote,s not sure if it will work as its wifi
the new fire tv 4k remote works which runs on wifi which makes it a better operation than the logitech touch im using, faster and slicker and also better than the controller (easier to hold) for general usage, plex, youtube, kodi
anyone know if the new apple tv remotes works? i dont have that device
I can confirm at least for me that the nexus player remote does not work on the shiled.

Anyone know how in the world to get an Amazon Fire tv 4k remote (or fire tv stick remote) in Canada? Amazon.ca doesn't carry it and Amazon.com will not ship these, or anything to do with their tv box, to Canada.
PS: I'm DESPERATELY looking for a good small 3rd party remote that can be ordered in Canada.

Don't no if it works.
I would really like to know if anyone has had success with the Amazon Fire TV 4K remote (which uses WiFi Direct). Im trying to write a Christmas list.

Sorry, I own the 2nd gen FireTV. I read that the FireTV stick with the new wifi direct remote will be one sale for about $30 for black Friday. If that helps...
Funny thing about Amazon's new wifi direct remote. It's laggy as hell on the Fire TV. Works perfectly on my Shield.

Thanks, it looks like that deals not going on in the UK, or at least not yet (Amazon's doing a 'Black Friday Week' this year). I'll keep an eye on it though.
Great remote.. 10 dollars
Found this on amazon.. Can't say enough about how well it works with my shield TV.. Has voice search and the whole nine yards
Libertview Multifunction 2.4 G Mini Wireless Keyboard & Infrared Remote Control & 3-Gyro + 3-Gsensor W USB Wireless Receiver For Android Smart,Mini PC
I'm guessing there are no standout choices?
My Sony NSG-MR1 remote from my Google TV works with the Shield. The keyboard doesn't works, as it triggers things in my Google TV. It might work on the Shield if it was on a standard tv.

Does the sound still come out from your TV/ sound system? I asked cos I had a MINIX A2 with voice control but it routed the audio to the remote speaker instead of from TV.
So you will press a button to trigger google voice, speak to the remote, Shield return the results, and everything back to normal?

3rd Party Gamepad Controller for use on both Gen 1 & Gen 2 (4k) ?

I have both Gen 1 & Gen 2 AFTVs (in different rooms). I'd like to get gamepad controllers that work on both so we can move from one room to the other as needed.
I have seen a lot of talk but no real clear info on them.
The ones that seem to get the most attention are:
Sony Playstation Dualshock 4
or
Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710
or
MAD CATZ...
MCB3226600C2/04/1 MOBILE Gamepad C.T.R.L.R
MCB3226200C2/04/1 MICRO Gamepad C.T.R.L.R
or
XBOX 360 wireless controller & USB receiver
Any recommendation between these options??
thx for the help!
The Playstation 4 controller "dualshock 4" works great for me and out of the box.
does everyone think the PS 4 Dualshock controller is the way to go?
The ps4 controller works great for me also.
If you already have one, try it out.
You can read my thread here for some pointers.
On page 2 one user even linked a fix for users having trouble. Although it seems the 4k boxes are working out of the box.

[Q] Gaming Edition or Base Fire TV?

I want top get an Amazon Fire TV Gaming, but the price jump just for the controller made me balk just a bit, would it be better to just get the $99 dollar version and pickup a cheap third party controller?

The Amazon Controller will probably work better than most other controllers. However, there are quite a few that work fine. I use a Gamestop Red Samurai (bluetooth) and it works great. It was $7 when I bought it from Gamestop. Don't know if they went up on the price since I bought mine. I think there is also a thread that talks about best controllers for the Fire TV also.

I don't know how the new Amazon Game Controller is, but I got the first-gen edition and the D-Pad is stiff as a rock. If you plan on playing any fighting games, I wouldn't recommend getting the older controller. Otherwise, it works great if you only play games that use the analog sticks.
