FiredTV Launcher is a 'replacement' for Amazon's Home/Launcher app which does not show sideloaded apps.

How does it work?
While it's not possible (yet/without root) to actually replace the launcher app, FiredTV effectively does this by watching for Amazon's launcher being opened, and then immediately launches itself. Because of this, you will see Amazon's home screen flash on the screen very briefly after pressing the home button, before FiredTV Launcher appears.
Installation
You can install the app by grabbing the .APK directly from the releases page: https://github.com/Redth/FiredTVLauncher/releases
You will need to sideload the app. There are many guides available how to do this on the forums.
Once the app has been installed, go into your FireTV Settings, go into Applications, find 'FiredTV' in the list, select it, and select 'Launch Application'
Enjoy!
Where's the Java?
If you looked at the source, you may have noticed that there's no Java. That's because this was written entirely in C# using Xamarin! C# is awesome, go use Xamarin!
What's next?
Obviously this launcher is very simple, and there's not much to it. I'm planning on adding some Settings configuration within the app, so you can do things like hide apps, reorder them, hide labels, change colors, etc.
UPDATES
--------------------------
v1.1.5
- Better FireTV Stick support
- Fixed Default Wallpaper not showing up in some instances
- Fixed Show/Hide for Amazon apps
- New Icon/Name for FireTV Home 'app'
- Fixed Settings icon
v1.1.4
- Fixed Signing issue
v1.1.3
- Updated Home detection logic, should be much more reliable
- Home detection is disabled by default (to help App store approval)
- Fixed a bug where the settings might show Home Detection enabled when it's actually disabled
v.1.1.0
- Home key detection disabled by default (to pass Amazon Store approval - you can enable it in Settings)
- New implementation for re-ordering apps
- More reliable settings saving/loading
- Customizable Wallpaper
- Removed FiredTV Logo
- Customizable Alpha of various backgrounds (top bar, label, app icon)
- Long press menu to hide app or uninstall app
v.1.0.3
- Now you can re-order apps
- Fixed bug with hiding Settings shortcut
- Now works on other devices (also on other devices that support it, now can become the 'home' launcher app)
- Fixed bug with time display (was in 24 hours by default)
v.1.0.2
This version adds some new features. Please note a different keystore was used to sign this app, so you may have to uninstall v.1.0.1 first!
- Hide/Show apps are all configurable now
- Date / Time now on home screen
- Hiding Logo, Date, Time App Labels all now configurable
- App Label font size configurable
- Fixed Settings shortcut
- Apps are now sorted by name
Great! How did you run it instead KFTV launcher?
Waiting hide apps, reorder... And please make the time display.
After clicking Settings crashes in KFTV launcher, so it should be?
Sorry for my English
Donated $ 10 I will write to my blog, who can still support
Thanks so much!
I am using a service to check the foreground activity and when it matches the Amazon fire TV launcher I open mine instead. Not the ideal solution but the only way so far to make it work!
I will work on those features first thing, thanks for the donation!!!

ES Task Manager can kill things perfectly fine, even without root.
although some apps, by design, will re-launch themselves automatically regardless (e.g. KFTV Launcher)

It really doesn't make sense for me to kill the AFTV process since no matter what you do right now, when you press HOME on the remote, the AFTV process starts up. So, if after I launched FiredTV when AFTV starts up, I went and killed AFTV, it would actually be slower the next time you pressed the home button since Amazon would start up the whole process again. This of course is all just theory too (I have a feeling it might not be so easy to kill AFTV process).
So, for now, it really doesn't make sense to try and kill the process, so I'm not going to be doing that...

Ohh, I thought this was when you clicked Settings on the home screen, not in the hide apps setting. I've found the bug and it will be fixed in 1.0.3.

This is for all of those things that make Fire TV irritating at times like the frustrating search keyboard that always pops up when using a browser.
There has got to be an app or service you can disable to make the onscreen search keyboard stop appearing so we can seamlessly use any web browser uninterrupted.
Maybe we can also get a different onscreen keyboard that can be toggled if needed for whatever reason.
Whenever a fix for removing the onscreen search is found,or if it was already found, please post it in this thread with instructions on how to do it.

There's an app called Null Keyboard but without the ability to select a different keyboard It's not usable. :/
Seems a bit pointless to mention it at all,in that case. lol
Just want to sedate the onscreen search box.
The biggest drawbacks are that you can't go back to a certain word to edit it,and you can't hit enter to make a new line for more sentences.
It also automatically reloads the page in flash browser, and it always randomly appears in FireFox simply because a search bar exists on the webpage you navigated to and it also manipulates the page when backing out, thus opening again immediately when the page loads again, possibly trapping you in an infinite loop unless you press the home button to leave it entirely.
In some cases,it can be inescapable even after typing something.
Another thing to fix by changing it is microphone acccess for apps that utilize it.
I don't know if this can be fixed wthout getting something custom.

That is pretty interesting. The last part (patterns) looks like it whitelists anything for amazon. Wonder if we can just use "*" and have every installed app show?
edit: nope, wildcard didn't work.
edit2: maybe the pattern needs to be "*\.*\.*"?
edit3: nope.

Where are the strings coming from with the question marks in them? I doni't see them in the JSON file.
I tried appending org.xbmc.xbmc to the list with no effect.
I think a JSON call is some flavor of database call, and what the list is really saying is "these apps can make that call."

It has nothing to do with urls. Those are the package names and the developers just decided to name their packages in a way that you can tell if it was from Google or Amazon. Also, the "Your Apps Library" will only show apps in your Amazon Cloud. You'll notice if for some reason the Fire TV can't connect to the Internet, every menu is empty. It's all loaded with content directly from Amazon. I have an idea for an xposed module to add an extra row to show sideloaded apps in the Apps menu, but it'll be a little tricky.
If it has an app,we need to know what the name is for the onscreen search box so it can be disabled for web browsers and other things it causes major problems for.

Hello,
I thought I'd stuff all of my questions into one topic, so as not to make three!
Anyways, some help would be appreciated.
I've got a rooted Fire TV. Running XBMC Kodi 14.0 (the signed launcher version).
A couple of questioins:
1) Live TV - I'm unable to get the Live TV option to come up on the menu. I've enabled everything I need to, and have done this on other boxes, and XBMC versions, but I can't for the life of me get Live TV to show up on the XBMC menu. Any thoughts?
2) I'm using a Harmony Smart Hub remote to control my Fire TV. I've also got the Fire TV tweaks installed. I'm using control method #3 (so I can use page up and page down to scroll through menus). I've got everything working on the Fire TV remote. But, when I change my Harmony buttons (channel up and down to fast forward and rewind - For page up and page down), they don't work. All is well on the software side...But when I hit the buttons it does nothing...Fast forward and reverse don't work as they should either. Again, thoughts?
3) Finally, external hard drive. I'm just going to run out and buy one...and a USB Hub in a few hours. A few questions here: Does the hard drive need to have a plug? Or can I use one of those new portable drives that's powered just by one USB cable? Also do I need to get an powered USB hub as well?
Bonus question - I went through the guide on AFTV News about setting up an external hard drive. It says you should most likely restore your Fire TV. I've mostly got it set up the way I want...Is this a required step? Will it move everything that's already installed over to the external drive?
Thanks for helping!
Hi there, just wondering if you resolved your question #2. I am having the same issue with my Harmony One and would love advice on how to fix.

I haven't used FTV Tweaks keymap in a while, but to have channel up and channel down behave like ff and rewind then you need to map them first in the MyHarmony app. I am assuming you are using Harmony's built in support for the aftv. In that case, here is a screenshot showing my Channel Down button mapped to AFTV's Rewind. Do the same for Channel up, Fastforward and Rewind buttons:

Then in you kodi keymaps file, make sure the below codes are present in the correct sections. If you are not sure about how kemaps files work, let me know. These should work out of the box if you are using the tweaks version you mentioned, as long as you did the above step correctly:

You will need an externally powered drive or a powered USB HUB. I'm using a WD Passport with an Insignia powered hub and it works wonderfully. No lag that I can tell. If it's not detected by the FTV, then it's not getting enough power. Be sure to follow the guides for switching data/system to external HDD completely.

Just an update on this that I have noticed. Last week FF and Rewind stopped working. Turns out there was a error in a Harmony firmware update. On the Harmony forums they recommended downloading latest firmware, removing the device from your profile, then re-adding it. This fixed it for me and now FF/Rewind works as expected.
Hi everyone.
I'm faced with difficulties when I run Android TV remote control app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote) on my P6Pro. It appeared to behave like an obsolete app abandoned by its developer - it never opens fullscreen.

I really don't care about that and could live with it as the app works like it should until I leave it foreground and turn off the screen. As soon as I turn my screen back on my phone hangs up and there is no possibility to get to home screen or go back. It happens from time to time, not every time I use it. Power button just turns the screen on/off and my only option is to press power+volume up buttons to reboot the phone.
I remember I was able to adjust full screen behavior for my apps in the previous versions of Android somewhere in settings. Now that option has gone in A12.
Any ideas?
I don't have an Android TV, but I just wanted to let you know your link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote doesn't work for me.
checked, the link works for me. Anyway I mean this app

Weird. Google must have it blocked unless you actually own one. On both the phone (Wi-Fi and Mobile Data) and the computer the link doesn't work and I can't find that app listed when I search for it by name.
Anyway, I know it's not relevant (I guess), just weird.

Another glitch? Unfortunately not the last one.
BTW, I just tried to open that link in chrome incognito mode
What's going on, Google? Is the app account-specific? Is it not available for everybody?
I just realized what the problem is. The app is really abandoned and it's obvious from my 2nd screen.

The reason I like it is an ability to enter login/pass details on my Android TV using my phone screen. This is the feature I was envious of iPhone users for its native integration into Apple TV.
Ok, RIP.
My only options are to get used to manual reboots or Force Stop the app after each use.
My understanding is that "Android TV Remote" is actually obsolete, and its functionality has been incorporated into "Google Home": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chromecast.app
The standalone Android TV Remote app has been decommissioned by Google. The functionality has been moved to the Google Home app and is available as a Quick Settings tile

Ah! That's helpful to know.

Not a glitch. Stop spreading misinformation. This is a perfect example of why half the complaints on this forum are bogus.
It is a frustrating change though in the very least, because who needs all the bloat of "home" when all you want is a remote control?
Anyway, I just ordered a couple of ADT-3's, which is the "developer" version of ccgtv. I'm tired of being locked out, and I don't give a flying f*** about netturds. Years ago I wrote a remote service for nexus player, which shouldn't be too hard to adapt to ADT-3.

I think they were joking (smiley face).

Well, from Google's perspective, it is logical to have it as part of the Google Home app. Android TV/Chromecast is part of the Google Home (devices) ecosystem.
That being said, if you don't want to use the Google Home app, there is an alternative
Android TV Remote - Apps on Google Play
Unofficial Android TV / Google TV remote control. Simple, convenient, complete!
play.google.com

Thanks, I know there are several alternatives by other developers but I always do my best to go google Just figured out how to enable Open Remote button in Google Home app at 3 different android tv boxes I own - Shield Pro, Onn TV and Dynalink TV. I had to manually update Android TV Remote Service to v.5.
Now I've got almost the same features, at least I can still enter text remotely on my phone.
Hi xda community,
I've been enjoying my TCL C635 for quite some time now and love the thing.
My question is the following:
Can i set an app to open automatically at boot? and/or is it possible to map a button on the remote to open an app?
I've tried several apps (button mapper, launch at boot etc) but they don't seem to work. Button mapper and similar apps need to be turned on in accessibility settings, but they automatically get turned off when rebooting the TV.
I have also noticed that some (not all) changes made in developer options (like setting process limit) just revert to normal when rebooting.
Also tried this but it doesn't work on Google TV:
[Guide] TCL AutoStart/AutoLaunch app with "Launch on Boot"
1. Setting up "Launch on Boot" normally to auto launch an app as you wish. 2. Have to disable "Auto Launch Safety Guard" in: Safety Guard -> Permission Shield -> Auto Launch -> Auto Manager: Closed; Launch On Boot: Opened Other AutoStart apps...
forum.xda-developers.com
Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance!!!
I haven't found one. It's really quite frustrating.
I've installed Key Mapper, it requires being an accessibility service. It works at first, but after a reboot, I have to start it *and* to toggle it off and back on as an accessibility service! Which is honestly preposterous. An accessibility service should by definition start automatically once it's been enabled.
But it would seem that under Google TV, the BOOT_COMPLETED broadcast is not sent to apps. At least that's what I could guess. I have found absolutely no way to make any app do anything after boot without user input. VPN apps? Have to be started manually.
It's the number one thing that is making me regret buying a Google TV TV.
FYI, the Safety Guard trick *did* work for me, but I only tried it under Android TV (I actually downgraded my Google TV to it, since I prefer it), so I can't say whether it's supposed to work under Google TV.
I hadn't looked at it before because I refused to accept Safety Guard's entirely creepy ToS. But I reached the activity without accepting them using App Manager...
Hi
Same problem here with my 55" C735 !!!
Another problem is that i can't access to folder like Android/Data.
funny467 • 24.12.21, 00:15 • (it's better to immediately connect a mouse (or a remote control with an air mouse), you can do without them, but these devices will help save your nerves in some situations and add a positive experience when setting up ) So, let's go. 1. Download and install programs Key Remapping and Power Shortcuts 2. Without running the program (so we will reduce unnecessary actions), go to Settings -> More settings -> Device settings -> Accessibility and enable these programs:

3. Run the program "Key Reassignment".
4. Press the button for adding an action:
#
5. Choose the preferred action:
#
6. In the "New Action" window, press the drop-down list button to select the button:
#
7. At the end of the list, click "Other":
#
8. In the window that opens, press the button that we want to bind (do not try to select from the list, but press the desired button, by the way, the program perfectly sees the advertising buttons of the Netflix, TCL Channel, Okko and HD Konopoisk remote control ):
#
9. After defining the button, the program returns back, in the "New action" window, check (if necessary) the "Long press" checkbox and press the drop-down list button to select an action:
#
10. In the list that opens, go to the very end again and click "Other" (by the way, this list also has useful actions: "Screenshot", "Voice Assistant", "ALT + TAB" (a very convenient feature, given that "Recent applications" in this program do not work)):
#
11. In the option selection window, click "Shortcut" (if you need to run the program, then select "Open application"):
#
12. Next, select "Power Shortcuts":
#
13. In the "Power Shortcuts" program window, click "Activity":
#
14. In the window that opens, click "Target":
#
15. A window will open with a list of programs with drop-down lists of available Activities. Select and click on the desired Activity. If you have a mouse, you can immediately check its operation by clicking on the green arrow (you can return to the Power Shortcuts program using the "Back" button on the remote control):
#
16. After selecting Activity, the previous window will open:
#
17. Press on the DPAD RIGHT remote control (arrow to the right) and in the new window press the red button with a checkmark:
#
18. In the "New action" window, check (if necessary) the "Replaces the standard action" checkbox and click the "OK" button:
#
All is ready:

I don't know if it works with Google TV, try it.
If that doesn't work, the only thing left is to switch to Android TV.
TCL P725 / P728 / P737 / P815 / C725 / H720 / Q72 / C635 / P638 Series [Android
] Previously, after switching from Google TV (on TVs that originally came with Google TV) to Android TV, WIFI and Bluetooth did not work, but starting with firmware 309 this problem was fixed.
Switching from Google TV to Android TV and from Android TV to Google TV is possible only through IMG firmware .
