[Q] Edit APN for Adblock Plus? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since the Verizon Note 4 can't be rooted yet, I went with Adblock plus, which is able to block ads without root. I got it setup to block ads on wifi, but to block ads on cell data, we'd have to edit the APN so that it can use the "localhost" as proxy.
Unfortunately, if the Note 4 is using the Verizon SIM card, APN can't be edited (and the option to add a new APN is greyed out). Are there work arounds or apps that can edit the APN (None root)?

Try Adguard... 10x better than ABP and doesn't affect MMS. Works on both mobile data and Wifi... and it's free. I can't post links but just Google Adguard for Android

T-Mobile Note 3 VPN Tethering

Has anyone found a way to get tethering to work while you have a VPN active? I tried openvpn with private tunnel and they don't allow for data to be sent to the phone when active.
I noticed our phone shipped with ipv6 only with clat. Crazy they are using us for a beta test. ipv6 with clat is ok but some apps still don't work. VPN at least with me, doesn't work.
I added ipv4 APN and VPN connects but the tethering passes no data when active.
I'm wondering if the stock tethering app adds a special route and if a different tethering app or vpn client can bypass it. I wish treve tethering worked.
I got treve to work using a vpn hider weeks ago but the speed was so slow it was taking 30 seconds to load a webpage, I just gave up and bought Pda-Net and haven't worried about it anymore. Even using Chrome spoofed my data racked up and got me flagged after a couple of weeks so I just broke down and paid for this.
How did you use vpn? And how did pda hide your data better?
you have to
1) add the word admin after supl, in the "APN TYPE"
2) also under your "APN Protocol" choose either ipv4 or ipv4/ipv6
there is a thread a few days back with pictures
depending on your rom, you may have to create a "new" apn file, there is a thread for that too

This is exactly I what I had to do on stock. Create a new apn, because I want able to edit the tmobile apn. Though I added word admin first in the "APN TYPE"

Using PDA-Net / Foxfi paid under data usage Foxfi shows 4.91kb used for the last 24 hour period when in reality I downloaded 2 full length movies tethered to my laptop as well as 7 hours tethered just browsing and whatnot. Thats at the default setting of level 1 hide tether usage, prior to switching to Foxfi I was using Chrome to spoof with an addon but it would show the actual usage just under that spoof and T-MO acted accordingly, granted they din't do anything until I was upto 30 or 40 gigs lol but still I was raising red flags with them. I'm sure I am an extreme example and most folks can just keep doing the Chrome spoofing and not buy Foxfi key.
Yeah I did that. It didn't help tethering vpn routing.

[Q] Wifi tether options?

New to T-Mobile coming from an unlimited Verizon plan with native unlimited tethering courtesy of the custom rom on my S3. Now that I have the Note 3 what are my options? I have rooted the phone but not applied any rom/recovery/bootloader.
- Native tethering cuts me off at 2.5 gigs for the unlimited plan, do I have that right?
- Wifi tether from the market does not work, tried it...
- Foxfi would beat the T-Mobile tracking allowing unlimited tethering?
- Would a custom rom delivery unlimited tethering from the native app?
Hey, I have been looking for a way to tether as well and I just found it. I am running the lastest version of Darthstalker ROM version 5. It has native tethering. Once you get that installed, go to your APN settings and change APN protocol from IPv6 to IPv4/IPv6. If you need any help, please let me know. Good luck!

Now I could already use the native tether (even before rooting) but there was some limit from what I read. Has anyone hit that limit?
Does using the rom allow you to bypass the limit?
I don't know for sure on the Note 3, but on my Note 1 with CM10.2 (now CM11) I am able to tether as much as I want on a non-tethering prepaid plan. When I try the same thing on my Note 3 (using N9005 ROM so no T-Mo modified tether menu) it successfully connects the laptop but only ever goes to the T-Mobile account login website when I try browsing. I tethered on a train ride last weekend and had to swap my SIM over to my Note 1 for tethering. Is this due to the IPv4/IPv6 issue? I have the Note 1 set to IPv4 because the CM10.2 ROM crashed on IPv6 randomly.

I believe T-Mobile gives you 2.5 GB of free tethering. When I tether it uses my unlimited data. I checked my plan online and it said I used over 38 GB of data.
Edit: I forgot to mention that you have to use a browser spoofer to prevent tmobile from knowing you're tethering. I mainly use Chrome browser and I have it set as if it's android.

Just got my Note 3 today I just had to make new apn. IPv4 is default I am using a vpn. Stock apn settings wouldn't let me connect.already used up my 500mb and still going strong

4.6.1 Rooted - T-Mobile APN for tethering

Since the 4.6.1 update my phone is using a T-Mobile APN associated with tethering when I turn on the hotspot feature. As such my tethering gets blocked by T-Mobile, I didn't have this problem with the old version.
I have been searching around for the APN in some of the phones APN files, but haven't found it. Is it possible to modify the APN the phone is using for hotspot in 4.6.1?

Can't get Adaway to work

I'm currently trying to use Adaway 3.1.2 on my G4 (H815 version) but whatever I do, I'm still getting ads popping up all over the place.
My phone is on Marshmallow and rooted. Adaway successfully downloads and applies host files but this doesn't seem to have any impact on ads appearing on various apps that were previously blocked on a different phone. I've tried changing the target hosts file in preferences but this doesn't help.
Is anyone else having problems with Adaway on their G4 with Android 6? Does anyone have any suggesting regarding what I can do to fix this?
Not sure about Android 6, but I'm on 5.1 and the stock settings for AdAway worked just fine.
Hope you figure it out!
Does it work on WiFi? If it does and just not on mobile data check your APN settings.
If the APN uses a proxy then it can stop it working.
For example on my network (o2 in the UK) the wap.o2... settings show ads as they use a proxy but the mobile.o2... settings work just fine as they don't.
Thank you, this is really helpful as it seems to be ok when used over wifi.
I have an enty in under proxy in my APN settings but the phone won't allow me to change it. The settings were entered automatically when I put my sim card in the phone and I can't make changes to them and if I set up a new APN it won't allow me to switch over to it. Argh!
Thanks again. After a lot of Googling and trial and error, I've managed to change my APN settings and Adaway seems to be working when using mobile data.

To add to this... I'm on giffgaff and removed the APN proxy field and my internet is not affected but adaway is also working on mobile data. From what I read, the proxy is only needed for really old phones.

Even if it doesn't there's always a way to get tethering to work. There's a app called wifi tether on play store will work might need root though
yea... but I really want to avoid root....
should work
Any phone that isn't carrier locked should work. Cricket auto setup the internet apn and a tethering apn when I first put the sim card in my 7x. If it does this just delete the tethering apn and you should be good to go. Unlocked phones don't have the carrier firmware that notifies them if the hotspot is on or give them the ability to control hotspot access.
Nice thread. I'm also a cricket customer and once I get the update I'll give it a test and report it back here ?
It's dead
I updated today with the SE NA keyone. I can confirm the update will kill your free hotspot tethering. I've even tried creating other APNs with no luck. I tried using pda+ as well and that did not work.
