Hello guys
So a friend of mine gave my his phone.
This is the information I get from it:
Model Number: SGH-T999L
Android Version: 4.3
Baseband version: T999LUVUBMK4
Kernel version:
3.0.31-2106417
[email protected] #1
Build Number: JSS15J.T999LUVUBMK4
SE for Android status:
Enforcing
SEPF_SGH-T999L_4.3_0010

I've been reading tons of threads and I'm almost ready to root the device but I'd rather ask before doing anything.
1. Can I root this phone as it is? Can anyone point me to the correct thread for this particular setup?
2. I've been reading about KNOX and the "warranty bit" but I'm not in the US so if this "warranty" is just with T-Mobile, then I ready don't care if it's tripped or not. Unless tripping this bit means something else...like, will it prevent me from future rooting, flashing, etc?. Phone is unlocked by the way.
3. I'm pretty sure this 4.3 version was done OTA. I can see an icon that says KNOX (when I click it, it says something like: "click here to install").
4. I'm guessing that there is no way to go to a previous android version, correct?
5. Can I flash the device with a stock 4.3 without KNOX now that I already have 4.3 OTA with KNOX? (presumably since I do not know how to check for it)
6. So what are my options? For me stock rom + root is fine. So again, if someone can tell me the correct thread for my phone, I'd appreciate it.
7. If flashing to docholiday's rom is possible, then I presume I need TWRP or CWD. I'm familiar with TWRP since that is what I have on my Kindle. Do they basically do the same thing? Any advantage of one over the other? Which version? I see so many on Docholiday77's repo Is this the correct one for the T-Mobile T999L: TWRP_d2tmo_2.6.3.1.zip?
8. At this point, any custom recovery I use (TWRP or CWD) will trip the warranty bit. correct? What if I use GooManager?
Is this pretty much what I have to do?

Sorry for so many questions, but as you can imagine... you can only brick your device once!
Many thanks!
PD: If you guys need for information, please tell me how to get it and I will post back.
EDIT: Ok, more info
ODIN MODE
Custom binary download: no
Current binary: samsung official
Qualcomm secureboot: enabled
Warranty bit: 0
Bootloader RP SWREV: 1
Cool. I soft bricked my phone when ODIN gave me some sort of error.
Trying to fix with Kies.
Back to square one.
Ok, nobody is helping so I guess I will tell you guys my findings.. maybe it helps someone else.
I tried using ODIN with Windows XP on a Vmware guest image on my MAC.
Something obviously went wrong with the usb communication between guest and host computers.
I tried flashing now with ODIN on a "real" Windows XP computer and it's working (half way through flash).
Hi. A few months ago I received a phone for my daughter from my mom. I reset the phone back to factory settings and it's working fine. I had to reset it back to factory again after locking myself out recently but other than that there hasn't been any issues until now. I picked up an activity tracker for my daughter recently and it wasn't connecting to the phone like it should even though it was listed as a compatible device.
Turns out the phone is at Android 4.1.1 and when I try to update it OTA it says there are no updates to download. So I tried updating through Kies and it isn't connecting the phone. At this time I started to do some more research.
The knox counter is at 2 and the device status is modified, which I have never rooted the phone and my mother can't even set up her wifi printer and most certainly can't root a phone. I installed triangle away but the phone needs to be rooted in order to do it's magic.
Do I need to root the phone in order to get the knox counter back to 0? Will this put the phone back where I can get android updates for it? I don't know where to start.
Boot into download mode. Do you see anything about warranty bit? If you do, the updates are working because it sounds like the phone has a stock 4.1.1 rom on a 4.3 or newer bootloader.

If you would to reset the knox counter to 0x0... yes, you have firstly to root your phone, then install triangle away.

Knox cannot be reset to 0x0 once it has been changed to 0x1.
Since the word "modified" appears in download mode, this leads me to conclude that the phone may be rooted and cannot receive ota updates.
It is strange that the phone is running 4.1.1 with Knox as Knox was not introduced until 4.3.
Before flashing anything, you need to confirm the phone's current bootloader and modem.

How do I confirm the bootloader and modem? I literally am learning all the language and how all of this works as I go. All I know is I have a phone that is running 4.1.1 and won't update and when I went to the download odis (I think that's what it is called) said it was tripped 2 times where I was supposed to read the knox number.
I ran to the mobile store it's connected to and they said the T Mobile Galaxy S3 phone that I-Wireless puts out was never given an update past 4.1.1 Not sure how true that is. If that's the case, I probably need to root the phone anyway to force an update (Is that what I would need to do to get it at least to 4.3?
there is an app in the playstore called samsung info. download it and it should tell you bootloader and modem.
pretty sure it is true that 4.1.1 was the last.
heres the link to the xda thread , which of course will lead you to the playstore ; but will tell more detail about the app :

I've never flashed something. Sorry if I ask a hundred questions as I go through this.
So you want me to flash the 4.1.1 that's already on the phone? Is that correct? Can I ask why? (I'm just wanting to know the meaning behind the action so understand what your thought process is so I can understand for next time.)
Just follow the directions underneath?
Is this what we're doing?

if i'm guessing right about what @audit13 & @ arthur (lol) are asking you to do is flash that firmware since the samsung info app said "firmware not found".
you might be confusing firmware version with android version. you say your on 4.1.1 which is the android version.
also if i'm not mistaken that firmware will match your bootloader which is a good thing.

Ah! That makes sense. In the process of it now. We'll see what happens and if I'm successful with it.
Success. It has auto updated to Android 4.3 after this. Thanks for your help.
good to hear.

Please help. I didn't root my phone, but it somehow rebooted to an loop error with message, CUSTOM BINARY BLOCKED BY FAP BLOCK. In the ODIN Mode it says:
DOWNLOAD SPEED: FAST
PRODUCT NAME: SM-N920A
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
FAP LOCK: ON
Secure Download: Enabled
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0 (0x000)
Sent the phone in to Samsung Tech, and they said the phone is rooted, didn't fix it and sent the broken phone back to me.
AT&T tech and Bestbuy Samsung Rep. could not reflash the phone with the stock firmware. They said the system allowed the firmware to be downloaded and flashed, but still rebooted to the same error. It could be because of my Google Account problem, or AT&T phone version don't allow customer to reflash it. I am stuck with a phone that is still under warranty, but no one wants to take the fault and no one can fix it for now.
At this point it sounds like the best thing to do is say you lost it and claim it on insurance. I personally have never seen that error so I don't know what exactly to tell you as far as a restore
Have you tried to flash stock with Odin yourself?
Hello.
I've just discovered that I can't switch my phone on because it says "custom recovery block by frp lock". I know there are numerous threads on this forum and other websites describing this problem and ways to solve it, included mantaining data.
Every method requires the download of the same version firmware you had installed on your phone. The problem is that I cannot really remember if I kept my Galaxy A3 2016 to 5.1 or I upgraded it to 6.0. Obviously I cannot check it by phone since I cannot even boot, nor via adb since it isn't able to recognise the phone in the download mode.
So firstly: is there a way to retrieve the firware code, or at least, the android version of my phone? Can adb recognise the phone in downlaod mode?
Secondly. According to this link in xda, that user was able to solve the problem using some kind of firmware image (QB1), which seems to be an upgrade. Is that method valid for other samsung phones? For my A3, should I follow the same steps with the correct firmware version?
Thanks in advance

try using smartswitch and see if it detects it
-are drivers installed
-does the pc recognize the phone ?
So, I had already tried with Smartswitch, but it says device not supported and does not link at all.
Moreover yes, the computer could read the phone before the frp lock, and even now, odin can detect it in download mode.
Kies just loads for some minutes and then says "unable to link to the device"
EDIT: no sorry kies raises "the device does not respond"
ok we need to flash using odin , i assume you can't access recovery but if you tried and it worked, look at the top of the screen it must show a code like
<your A3 model> followed by <your country> followed by <frimware date>
If you couldnt, we can use an updated version for your model , please provide us with the model if u can.
I can only acces to odin mode. Via that, I have the following text:
Product name is: SM-A310F
Current binary: Custom (it was rooted)
System status: Custom
FRP LOCK: ON
Secure Download: Enabled
Knox Warranty Void: 1
RP SWREV: B:2 K:0 S:0
I am sure that the phone had Vodafone pre-installed applications, and looking at mrcrab.net there exist these possible stock firmware:
Android 5
Android 5
Android 6
Android 6
I only fear that if I mistaken the version I will obtain a wipe of my data, which are not vital but are important to me
Actually there is no way to avoid the reset as we don't know anything about the PDA version, install the drivers type in google "USB Samsung drivers"
It must show developer.Samsung.com/....
I'm on phone so I can't provide it as a link, install the drivers and try again, else we will get the latest version
I already have samsung usb drivers, and odin can succesfully detect the phone in download mode; Kies cannot, though
Anyway, if you open one of the links I posted, isn't the PDA shown in the line:
OS Version : A310FXXU1AOLE (chosen one as example)
In that website there is every stock firmware by model, android version, and mobile operator. I know two out of three, and those 4 links are the 4 possible choices regarding android version. If I picked the right one, would I avoid the data reset, wouldn't I?
EDIT: What, if I did how it is explained here with the latest version? I mean download android 6 last upgrade, extract it, rename .tar.md5 in .tar and flah it with odin? Would it be any risk of loosing data?
Hello,
.MD5 lets odin checksum the rom loaded to it to make sure it's not corrupted, however if you are sure of two main things:
that the frimware you are flashing isn't a downgrade as downgrading flashs a old bootloader which gets you in some kind of troubles possibly a brick, to avoid that, grab the latest version
and the second thing you must make sure of is that the file isn't anyway corrupted.
if you think it's all ok, then you can proceed as of i tried it once and it saved a device.
Okay, I'm sure now that my android version was 6.0.1 because I read that 5.1 didn't have single app permissions manager, and I definetely remember that I had it.
According to this page, I have three possible choices.
1) I think the right version is the oldest one. In case I mistaked, would I risk a brick even if the major version is the same?
2) Also, if I mistaked, do I risk a data loss even though the major version is the same?
Thank you (we're almost there)

The build number must be the same regarding the android version, so to keep the files it must be the same as the one in the phone, else a wipe will be performed.
The problem is that you want your data, that maybe lost if we don't have the exact same build.
Just grab the latest marshmallow or nougat -, but the data would be lost then.
Do a hard reset in case something went wrong.
I was able to unlock the phone a mantain the data! Thanks

I am not an expert, but it sounds like you are trying to flash a bootloader that is an older version than the version 4 on your phone. I don't think you can downgrade the BL version. The fifth character from the end is the BL version. (e.g. G955USQU4CRE1) Also, you may need a newer version of ODIN.

Yes. There are a lot of software versions available. If you use Updato you can search by model number and service provider (listed as region on Updato. I was able to find one with a version 4 bootloader. Similar to your version, but CRE9 at the end. It is an oreo version. Your phone is a model SM-G-955U when you search there. It might take a long time to download. I have sometimes had luck speeding things up by trying to restart the download. Sometimes it just takes a long time. Be careful when you are flashing if you have any desire to go back to a previous version. I am not sure of the limitations.
Another thing you could try that might be easier for you is to go to the JRKruse ROM thread here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s8+/development/rom-t3771206 and use the instructions he has there to install the ROM. There is another rooted ROM that he has that may also work for you. He has instructions on what to do.
Hello, my galaxy s8 is stuck in rpmb provisioned and its boot looping, I can get to download mode, it doesn't say things such as fuse blown etc. How can I get out of the boot loop? Help is appreciated.
Did you find a fix? Im having a very similar problem. I don't see any stock roms with a v4 bootloader. The most recent seems to be a v3.
Fixed it the way Smithfolk said. I was using the combination rom FA70_G955USQU4ARE1 with a V4 bootloader. I used odin v3.13.1 and flashed verizion G955USQU4CRE9 from Sammobile including the bootloader and it fixed my phone.
